As a new Exorcist Esquire at True Cross Academy, Rin Okumura has a long way to go before he reaches the top rank of Paladin. When Rin and his classmates are sent to search for a ghost, Amaimon, King of Earth, takes Rin by surprise and steals the Koma Sword. Higher powers have been observing events at the academy and make their presence known. New players enter the game, and Rin doesn't even know he's playing!
I liked the main character a lot better in the second volume, and now he's got a demon cat familiar so you know, all in! Although I hope we don't get too much more time with the new booby jerk character.
(I don't believe an exorcist school would really have an amusement park, though.)
Buried under the boy’s manga themes of fight scenes and big bosomed girls wearing next to nothing, are some interesting ideas. I’m liking this manga more than I expected to. We start to get to know the real Rin in this volume, beneath the bluster. The brothers’ relationship is examined and it is inherently uneven. Rin, the protector, is all about his muscles. His twin, Yukio, is the studious one and at True Cross Academy the power is actually all Yukio’s as he’s already an instructor and well, Rin is barely literate. In personality they remind me a bit of the Elric brothers but Rin isn’t as smart as Edward and Yukio is a bit harder than Alphonse.
Interwoven into the story lines, which include a demon cat who was the familiar of the priest who raised the boys and the ghost of a boy at an amusement park, is the idea that Rin avoided school for two reasons, one he wanted to protect the weaker kids, like his twin but was so freakishly strong he hurt kids and two, the kids and adults learned to fear him. He doesn’t have friends, doesn’t know how to have them. At the Academy he’s learning to be a normal kid.
But it might already be too late. Rin is relying more and more on the blue flame, his Satanic heritage, to fight with and the magic sword is barely enough to contain him. Case in point, another demon who may or may not be helping the humans steals the sword and Rin loses control. Enter Shura, an exorcist who was also the priest’s apprentice. She may have to kill Rin if he can’t control himself.
Rin, Shiemei and some of their classmates are sent into demon-infested woods for training camp. Yukio and Shura are quick to point out that Rin will be unable to use his power because it’ll be seen in the dark but once Shiemei is hurt, can Rin not use his powers to save her.
Ignoring the ridiculous outfits and boobs on Shura, the art is very nice and the storyline is maturing. I’m looking forward to seeing more.
Getting better and better each volume but not hitting the 4 yet. I'd settle on a 3.5.
Our main lead Rin really has great moments with his brother. They feel like brothers and it works really well. Rin also gets to spend time with the girl of his dreams but is attacked by a demon. Tus we get a pretty great fight that ends almost in a loss but saved by a new big boobie hero. We all love those, don't we?
Overall still not amazing but it's a nice slow burn fun time. A 3.5 out of 5.
I love this manga series! It's so engrossing, so much fun and I love the premise. This one gets only a 3 stars not because I didn't enjoy it, but because I didn't feel like enough happened to make a full volume. I finished it sort of thinking that very little happened.
Got to meet Shura, one of my favorite characters in this book. Also got to see the really sweet relationship between Shiro, Rin, and Yukio. Still lots of hints about Mephisto and what his plans for Rin are. The art in this manga is a real treat.
Blue Exorcist, Volume 3 begins with Rin and the gang busily completing missions at their newly graduated level of Exwire. Rin proves again that his methods may be unconventional, but he does things with a big heart. My favorite scene is with him and Kuro, particularly with the special wine. It was touching, funny, and very revealing of the kind of character Rin truly is.
While on a mission to find a ghost, Shiemi and Rin partner up as a team. I love the chemistry with these two. I didn't expect to love Shiemi as much as I do, but she's turned out to be one of my favorite characters. Her “serious” face is hilarious! When the two split up in search of the ghost, Rin finds an entirely different type of demon.
Facing off with the demon, it looks like Rin is about to lose control over his powers and destroy everything around him. In a surprising twist, one of the students steps in and skillfully gets control of the situation. It turns out this mysterious student has a badass secret identity:
In a previous review, I mentioned that Rin reminds me of Naruto. I love Naruto, so this isn't a bad thing for me. I think they're both adorable mischiefs. This volume had me making frequent comparisons with the two. They both possess a demon spirit that caused them to be ostracized from society. They both have endured pain and loneliness, but still manage to have the biggest hearts. Like Naruto's quest to become the greatest Hokage, Rin also dreams to reach the highest level and be the best Paladin ever.
So far, this series has gotten better with each volume. Rin's silliness has me in total adoration of him. He's just lovable. Plus, he's got mad skills in the kitchen! This volume ends with them going through difficult training and someone possibly discovering Rin's powers, so I'm curious to see how it pans out. I am completely engrossed in this world and cannot wait to read what happens next.
I love the cover with Shiemi and Nee. The contents cover page is too freakin' adorable. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
We get a focus on Rin this volume, specifically his purpose and his relationship with Father Shiro. How the two interacted, why Shiro raised Rin, what sort of life Rin had up to this point, etc. There's some conflict building between him and the adults - what Mephisto's plan is, who those other guys are, who the new teacher is, what the Exorcist organization's real plans are for the Son of Satan - but I like how he's finding a clear goal. He wants to move up the ranks of Exorcists, he wants to learn how to fight without his power, he wants to learn to use a sword properly, etc. It's some good groundwork and by the end of this volume we have some teases of what's going to happen next so there's good forward momentum to carry on with.
Rin finally tames a familiar here and discovers more about his dad. At this point, the anime and the manga is still on the same level, though I think it'll diverge in a couple more chapters
I found my new favourite character : shura n she's quite badass n I want to see her fight in battle. Amaimon in other hand taking interest on Rin even though I don't know what's Mephisto true purpose is, he wants amaimon to fight Rin for what - training, maybe or something else. Shura in other hand, I wish she train Rin to become stronger to fight n protect the ones he care. What yukio said to Rin was true n never rely on the sword power of flame only n used his brain for once. I love Rin, yukio & kuro moment ♥️. Bon - did he see rin's power or not, hope he don't see it. I got feeling amaimon was there in the forest n played Rin again if they meet each other.
