In the attack at La Bassée in September 1915, Captain A.L. Samson of the Royal Welch Fusiliers was hit and lay groaning about 20 yards from the front trench. There were several failed attempts to rescue him, with two officers and one man killed in the doing. In the end his own orderly crawled out towards him – Samson waved him back, saying he was beyond rescuing. He sent his apologies to the company for making such a noise. When his shot-riddled corpse was recovered it was seen that he had forced his knuckles into his mouth to stop himself crying out and attracting any more men to their deaths.
