Mia’s struggles with her finances and self-esteem become minute, while she focuses to stay sane, unharmed and alive.
Mia’s new “employer” will stop at nothing to keep her in his grasp. While the soundtrack of her life plays in the background, Mia is forced to distance herself from family, friends and even the love of her life in order to protect them from her hidden secrets.
Awesome book but definitely not for the faint of heart. This book was totally engrossing and difficult to put down. It kept me wanting to know what in the world was going to happen next. I found myself going through the full range of human emotions concerning Mia and her plight. I wondered what I would do if I found myself in Mia's situation....better yet would I even be able to metally survive it....I think NOT! I really enjoyed how music was infused into the story and how each song mentioned complimented and often enhanced the situation that was occurring. I highly recommend this book. Ms. Reid, thank you VERY much for this GREAT read......I sense a sequel about Michelle (and Nickole).
Man…oh man! I couldn’t put this book down. I don’t want to divulge all the goods of the book because if any of you want to purchase the book (And you should) I don’t to spoil it for you. I’m going to go ahead and take a nose dive into the book without landing on my face. Alright, here it goes!
Mia Nickole Rose is a 24 year old attractive, curvaceous, and ambition young woman. She’s a Copy Editing supervisor for, "The Metro” Newspaper in Washington DC’s Metropolitan area. And she has a loving boyfriend named, Eric who loves her to smithereens. Like many people who are overweight, Mia receives jeers and derisive remarks about her size, but she doesn’t allow it to rupture her spirit. Asides from being a full figured woman, she has powerful, Grammy winning vocal chords, that has landed her a slew of singing gigs. However, she is still inundated with financial woes. And she lives hand to mouth from a pay check that barely covers her household and school loan expenses. Mia does part-time singing gigs to financially assist her parents. (Who are also trying to make ends meet). Anywho, Mia’s frustrations with her job, finances, coworkers, and supervisors, drives her into desperation. One day, Mia receives an email invitation from an escort service that offers $5,000. While thinking about her circumstances, she goes against her better judgment and accepts the offer.
When she shows up at the party, she meets a malefactor who goes by the name, “Professor.” Just when Mia thinks her problems are about to end, they take a tragic and twisted turn for the worst. The party attendees get drugged and their bodies are dragged into the basement by Professor's "helpers," Gio and Toni. Mia is the only person who’s spared of the professor's murderous wrath, but she has a price to pay, she’s coerced to kill and watch the professor and his "helpers" murder and torture his victims. Reason being, Professor‘s son was savagely beaten by a group of bullies because of his obesity. The attack was so severe, it left his son mentally impaired. Since then, Professor counsels overweight people like Mia, who have been teased and taunted for being overweight. He then finds their bullies, and he tortures, and kills them. Now that Mia is appointed as his right hand woman, she finds herself ensnared, scared, paranoid and helpless. She has to do everything the professor orders her to do in exchange for money and the protection of her parents, and her own. With the help of her alter ego, Nickole, Mia is willing to stop at nothing to retrieve normalcy and save her parents.
While reading this book, I was slightly scared, shocked, and amused. Authoress K. Reid uses soundtracks to describe the mood of events through the chapters of the novel. When you read this book, you will be on the edge of your seat. The book is not "Put down-able." This book WILL stir your emotions. TRUST! It has taken me at least a day to read the book because it's that good. I look forward to reading more of K. Reid's forthcoming books. I STRONGLY suggest you purchase, "FAT KILLS" because the title matches the content of the book. Let's help support this talented literary artist! :-)
Character, Mia Rose is a very likable full figure woman with a voice that is aspiring to become a renowned singer. She currently works as an advertising lead coordinator while accepting singing gigs at various parties and clubs throughout the Washington D.C. area. Due to the economy downfall, Mia found herself in need of extra cash in order to make ends meet and still provide financial support to her parents. Her answer comes in an email forwarded to her from a previous client. This gig offers $5,000 dollars!! Definitely enough to help her out, however, what would her boyfriend and family think if they ever found out? Even if she decides the job is not for her, the email states that she can keep the money for her discretion. So Mia ponders with the idea, Why not? There’s a saying: Curiosity kills the Cat!!
Characters: Mia is a six feet overweight woman with a sense of humor that could have made her a member of queens of comedy. As with many overweight people, Mia endured teasing for being overweight. Eric, her boyfriend, loved her as she was, weight and all. Professor, A damn scary maniac that will send chills up your spine. The professor body guard Grio, Toni, another stupid assistant of the professor and Mickey, the professor son.
Theme- MONEY can lead you to do desperate things without first heeding all avenues and all people should be respected regardless of race, gender or size. The author wrote a remarkable storyline that conveyed the theme and conjured a myriad of emotions.
Book Aesthetics- I adored the artwork of the female in twists. The eyes, those lips and that one braid hanging from the middle of her head may speak silently out to some readers whereas it may pass others Playing off the title too, it made me wonder if the woman on the cover is an overweight serial killer or did her weight kill her? What’s the story?
The story line is absolutely CRAZY!!! Some will say, it has suspense, mystery, and a myriad of emotions. I definite agree with the myriad of emotions and don’t forget the thriller. Yes, it’s a suspense thriller. At moments I thought I was going to suffer a nervous breakdown alongside of Mia mental breakdown. The last page reads like there could be a Book TWO. If so, I can’t wait. I enjoyed the playlist of music which was very accommodating to the story line although some were a bit long. One concern, the font size is a bit small. This was a moderate to fast pace read for me. It is an easy, provocative read. If you don’t like reading thrillers, don’t read this book. This novel makes for a great book club discussion. This novel sits on my reading shelf as a DARN GREAT READ rating of 4.8.
I'd never heard of the author K Reid, but I was drawn to this book by it's cover and title which I thought was original but scary looking. Frankly I didn't know what to expect, but once I read the story inside I was shockingly surprised!
Mia Rose dominates the scenes in this novel as a struggling singer who works a regular job, but follows her singing passion when gigs come her way. This full figured young woman is living from pay check to pay check and worried about how she will meet her bills like so many others in this time. She has a boyfriend Eric who loves her unconditionally which she appreciates as she's had her share of fat comments and loser boyfriends.
Looking to earn extra income Mia answers a strange email from an escort service which offers a substantial amount of money just to show up at their meet and greet party. Seeing the dollar amount Mia figures she has nothing to lose if she went to the party. From the time Mia stepped inside the party her life would never be the same!
Get ready for a bizarre roller coaster ride as Mia is blackmailed into a disturbing situation filled with suspense and horror!!
Is it true that when we're experiencing hard times we do desperate things? Is our intelligence compromised when we're thrown into a situation we're uncomfortable with or afraid of? And the most important question of all is...what would you do????
The professor was clearly deranged...peelings?? Who does that? It was weird because half way through the story I wondered if the professor's son was faking it, then I said to myself "naw". By the end of the book I was blown away...WHO KNEW!! Lol!
Even though I didn't really like the long play lists sprinkle throughout the story, I certainly could see where a few of the songs fit right into Mia's life, it was therapeutic for her. At first Mia was portrayed as strong and didn't seem like the type of woman that would let herself get caught up so emotionally in a life threatening situation when she had plenty of freedom to ask for help. At times I was asking "why?"
Other than that this is an unpredictable excellent story! If you can handle a little horror in your life for the short time it takes to read a fictional novel, then I recommend this book!
Kudos to K Reid for keeping me on the edge of my seat and thoroughly entertained!

This read is one of those Oh No She/He Didn't types that I like. the story started out slowly and I really thought I couldn't get through it, but I also saw quite a few people giving it a good review so I stuck with it. I'm glad I did. Just for the sake of trying to make some money to help ease her burdens, ol' girl found herself in more hot water than she could ever have imagined. To keep her family protected she had to do some heinous stuff and find a way to extricate herself from what she was doing. I won't go into detail 'cause this is a story you have to read to believe. Trust, it's that crazy.
Chose this book for three reasons. Price $.99 kindle, author local to area, the plus size lead character. The price was right on. I enjoyed the read although unbelievable at times. This is what I call a "no thought" read. Recommended it to friend as a change of pace from her normal reads and exposure to other genre. In the future, I will only recommend this read to those I know who read this type of book. Not my cup of tea but I try to finish all books I start unless absolutely impossible. Not sure if I would read something by this author in the future.
I purchased this book on my ereader because of its .99 price. This actully truned out to be a pretty good read. Definitly not what I expectd. The only downside I had with this novel is that the author put too much time in listing the character's ipod play list. I did not find the playlist to be relevent to the story.
The details of the killings may leave you a little queasy as the author gives pretty graphic details. All and all this was a good read.
Quite difficult to read because of the slang but I was hooked because of the blurb. A lot of the content is very grisly and sometimes completely unbelievable, but saying that, you never know what goes on in someone else's head or behind closed doors .... Not for the squeamish, and it's one you have to keep at. Worth it.
