Before (During) After is a visual and literary narrative of how Hurricane Katrina has transformed the work of twelve photographers from Southeast Jennifer Shaw, Frank Relle, Lori Waselchuk, Rowan Metzner, Samuel Portera, David Rae Morris, Jonathan Traviesa, Eric Julien, Zack Smith, Elizabeth Kleinveld, Mark J. Sindler and Thomas Neff. The book emphasizes not only the effect of Hurricane Katrina, but also the way individuals are influenced by their environments, particularly in times of upheaval.
It's hard to say that I loved something that made me so sad, but the photos in this book are quite powerful. I saw some of them hanging in The Louisiana State Museum, whose Hurricane Katrina exhibit I highly recommend.
