Angel Morgan's family is falling apart.

Her daddy is in jail, and her mother has abandoned Angel and her little brother, Bernie, at their great-grandmother's crumbling Vermont farmhouse. Grandma spends most of her time wrapped in a blanket by the wood stove.

There is one bright spot in Angel's world: a mysterious stranger who teaches Angel all about the stars and planets and constellations. Carving out a new life proves harder than Angel ever imagined. But she feels a tiny spark of hope when she remembers what the stranger said that she is made of the same stuff as stars.

"You gotta know someone cares about you, or you just give up."

The Same Stuff as Stars, P. 21

Katherine Paterson has brought into the twenty-first century her compassionate feel for the stories of fractured families, and I think that we are tremendously lucky for it.

The story of Angel and her kin is vintage Katherine Paterson, as moving, surprising, and germane as her works of mastery from the 1970s and '80s. The interactions between Angel and her younger brother Bernie are as authentic and nuanced as any sibling relationship that I have seen in any book, and this relationship builds well upon the connection that Angel has to those around her as an authority figure who was chosen for that position whether or not she wanted it, as a safe harbor of mature decisions in a sea of adults that seem unable to make decisions for their own good, let alone take proper care of a couple of kids.

Angel's world of uncertainty further intensifies when her mother abandons Angel and her brother with their father's grandmother. Because their father is in jail their only guardian now is their frail grandmother, who is herself in many ways like an unmanageable child. As she always naturally does, Angel takes over as the authority figure and tries to navigate the storms that life inevitably brings.

The harsh realism of Angel's days is unexpectedly alleviated by the appearance of a warm, thoughtful stranger who appears outside of Angel's grandmother's house at nights to examine the brilliant stars that shine like studded jewels in the dark. Angel goes out to view the majestic skies with the "Star Man" every night and soon begins to learn a great deal about them, and to deeply reflect on the vastness of the universe and her relationship to the awesome sum total of creation. Somehow, this makes her regular life more palatable, makes her realize that her troubles are not as all-encompassing as they seem. She watches the constant North Star, Polaris, and knows that such an unchanging ballast is what she needs in her own life, even as she instinctively acts as a sort of Polaris for Bernie and their grandmother.

It takes a while for Angel to truly become comfortable with her grandmother, but through time she accepts the idiosyncrasies that make up the old woman's character, and their makeshift family begins to heal. Issues continue to bombard Angel and keep her off balance, but as long as she has the Star Man to explain the stars to her, she feels that she can handle it all. Until one night, when the star man doesn't come...

What really stands out to me about The Same Stuff as Stars is the fact that even though Angel and her grandmother appear so different, they really are kindred spirits. Both of them fear deep down that they aren't good enough to fulfill their responsibilities to their family, that they have failed the ones they love again and again, and that they are powerless to avert their cycle of failure. Growing slowly behind all the scenes of the book is the feeling that both Angel and her grandmother are beginning to see that even if they have made some mistakes, the best thing that they can do is to love the family around them now, and hope that their loved ones will make good decisions for themselves.

A powerful, thoughtful book that makes its way forward in humor as well as sadness, The Same Stuff as Stars is one of the best books of the year, in my opinion. I would absolutely recommend it.

Hard to read because such a sad premise, but ultimately ends on a hopeful note. Not HEA, but optimistic that things will be ok-ish. And sometimes, really, that's all one can hope for. Because it's Paterson, it's also brilliantly written and even has some joyful and some funny moments.

And because it's Paterson, of course I'm going to recommend it. ;)

Pasiemusi knygą Tiltas į Terabitiją ir jos neįveikusi, ja nesusižavėjusi, knygos nugarėlėje radau štai šios knygos aprašymą ir iškart ją pasiėmiau. Nenusivyliau!! Tikras atradimas jaunimo skyriuje...

Sometimes, when children's authors insert the titles of other works of juvenile literature into their books, it's too much like name-dropping and feels inauthentic. In other cases, such as The Same Stuff as Stars by Katherine Paterson, allusions to other real children's books truly add something to the story.

In this 2002 middle grade novel, Paterson uses H.A. Rey's Know the Stars (a precursor to The Stars: A New Way to See Them shown here) and Harry Allard and James Marshall's Stupids series to provide insight into her characters, Angel and Bernie, whose father is in prison, and whose mother has trouble keeping them out of foster care. When their mom dumps them on their elderly great-grandmother, they worry about having enough to eat, making it to school, and how to keep a social worker from separating them, but at the library, with Miss Liza, they have a chance to relax and explore their own interests. Angel's interest in stars is also connected with a mysterious man who lives in the trailer on Grandma's property - a relative whose identity is revealed late in the story as part of the poignant climax.

This was a five-star read for me. The writing had an older, classic feel to it, despite the book itself being relatively new, and though the characters dealt with some difficult situations, there was always a sense of hope throughout the book, and the growing love between the kids and their great-grandmother provided a very bright light amidst the darkness.

I really didn't like this book in the beginning. The mom was too annoying and I didn't want to continue reading if she was going to be in the storyline the entire time. Once the mom left, I got caught up in the story and couldn't stop reading. Katherine Paterson is simply amazing!

The synopsis is incredibly misleading as to what the book actually delivers. I read this, thinking it would be about a teen with an incarcerated parent who was worried about how to keep her life together, and was interested in astronomy. The introduction to the book by the author, who works with incarcerated folk, backs this up. That is not what I got, and I was befuddled. The incarcerated father is mentioned in chapters one, seven, and twelve I think, in the edition I read. Stars and astronomy are delivered like entire pages of textbooks throughout starting in chapter five or so. This book is terribly structured. It's not about the effects of having an incarcerated parent at all! It's about her younger brother, who is in their great-grandmother's words, "spoiled like last years apples," and the great-grandmother herself. I hated them both. Angel shouldn't have had to be their mother, but she had to. The whole book SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABOUT THAT. If it was going to, change the synopsis so I could have skipped it! I have no interest in reading about the hardships of a twelve-year-old forced to raise her brat of a brother, or attempt to, because all he does is repeat words and scream when he doesn't get his sugar and UGH. The great-grandmother was utterly useless as a character. Various plot points were so implausible. The mom was realistic; I've known people with mothers like that. Everything she did was predictable and infuriating. Angel's loyalty to her was predictable and heartbreaking. I wanted Social Services to swoop in and put them in a different situation so things could change, and this is selfish to admit, but it would have made the book far more interesting. The book ends weakly, and it reads like the middle of so many chapters that have already been presented. This wasn't what I wanted, so I feel like I wasted my own time waiting for the book to be about what it said it would.

Kartais įkvėpimas ateina iš vienur, kartais iš kitur… Svarbu laikyti savo širdį atvirą, o niekas jos man labiau nesuvirpina nei istorijos apie vaikus!

Katherine Peterson "Visai kaip žvaigždės"

Turiu prisipažinti kai ką :) Aš dievinu vaikų ir jaunimo literatūrą :) Man joje slypi neapsakomi ir neaprėpiami lobiai :) Todėl šį kartą Jums ir noriu pristatyti šią nuostabaus gėrio ir grožio knygą.

Šios autorės "Tiltas į Terabitiją" man priminė, kokią galią turi vaizduotė ir fantazija.

Labai labai patiko 😍

This was the book which initially got me hooked into reading books. Whereas most of the (story)books I read at that time(I was 10 when I first read this) seemed more fantasy, this felt more real. This probably had to do with the setting, which I recall was set in contemporary America, and the characters, which felt really life-like, dealing with problems and emotions the same way humans actually do. Stars, which remain as one of the main themes, intrigued me at that time partly due to that one fact where the light in my area were often badly lit , which allowed constellations like Orion to be viewed quite clearly; also with the way the characters discuss about the stars. Maybe today it seems trivial, but for a 10 year old kid who spent most of his time by himself, this book served a special place in his heart. Even today at times whenever I am alone, I fondly remember those starry moments; and this book which allowed me to realize all of that...

Genre: Realistic Fiction
Reading Level: Grade 4-6

Overwhelming sadness and desperate circumstances surround Angel and her brother Bernie. Abandoned by their mother and with a father in jail, they find themselves living with their Grandmother who is unable to properly care for them. It beats the two foster homes they spent time in but life is hard, especially with the absence of loving adults. Happiness comes to Angel in the form of a stranger offering nightime lessons on the stars.
Lots of tenderness in this story, coupled with sadness and heartbreak as Angel and Bernie do their best to stay afloat.

This would be a challenging read for some children, and a thought-provoking study in hope, despair, and the unfairness of life for others. Katherine Paterson (of Bridge to Terabithia fame) knows how to reach inside the heart of a child and her story and put it on a page like no one. This is the story of Angel Morgan whose dad is in jail and whose mom has no idea how to be a mom. Angel steps up to mother her little brother through the ups and downs of family dysfunction and has to deal with the accompanying emotional trauma. Paterson deals with the resulting issues with sensitivity and age-appropriate honesty and tenderness. It's a great read.

This is young adult fiction, so a simple story simply written. I got to the point of being annoyed at everything the bratty little brother Bernie did and said. I liked Angel, but she could also be exhausting. At the same time I was reading this, I was listening to an audio book that also had an eleven year old in it and that girl had a part-time job, helped her mom with household chores, and fixed dinner. Angel couldn't fix much more than cold cereal and drag Bernie around. Most young boys I know LIKE going outside.
I really liked the star aspect to the story and I did want to know the outcome.

Angel Morgan is 12 years old and has been forced to grow up too soon. Her dad is in prison, her mother is irresponsible, and she must look after her seven year old brother, Bernie.

It's a sad story of brokenness interlaced with hope. Just when Angel thinks adults cannot be trusted, she meets a few who help her to find her way. There are a few mild swear words that fit the people and the situations. A compelling tale.

Visų pirma užbūrė viršelis. Leidykla Nieko Rimto tikrai pasistengė estetika sudominti jaunuosius skaitytojus.

4.5/5

/ „Žinojimas, kad kažkam rūpi, skatina nepasiduoti.“ /

Kokia graži, jaudinanti, jautri ir kartu skaudi istorija! Skaityti apie vaikus visada labai sunku, o ypač, jei tie vaikai nelaimingi, jei jiems gyvenimas ant pečių užkrovė visai nevaikiškus rūpesčius. Ir nors sunku rasti bent mažą spindulėlį šviesos, kai aplink vien tamsa, aš radau ir net ne tokį mažą.

Istorijos ašis - mergaitė Angelė, kuriai gyvenimas nepagailėjo sunkių išbandymų, kai didelė našta prislėgė mažyčius jos pečius. Ir atsidūrus, rodos, juodžiausioj duobėj, Angelei gyvenimas padovanoja JĮ - Žvaigždžių žmogų, kuris pakeičia mergaitės gyvenimą.

Būtent ta astronomijos tema man čia pasirodė teikianti daugiausiai vilties, tikėjimo ir ryžto kabintis į gyvenimą. Labai simboliška ir prasminga linija.

Nepaisant viso grožio, istorija kupina daug skausmo, liūdesio, draskančio širdį, ir dar daugiau neteisybės vaikų, kurie neturi būti kalti dėl suaugusių žmonių pasirinkimų, atžvilgiu. Deja, gyvenimas būna visoks ir ši knyga puikiai tą atspindi.

Kaip bebūtų, labai linkiu atrasti šią istoriją kiekvienam! Pasaulyje, kai visur skubam, lekiam, neturim laiko įkvėpti ir pasimėgauti dabarties akimirka, ši knyga puikus priminimas, kad gyvenimo grožį galim atrasti menkiausiose smulkmenose, o po tamsos visada ateina šviesa!
