The author explores the obscure history of zinfandel wines, describing the ascension of California's "mystery grape" to a product worthy of worldwide attention, and relates many of his own wine-making experiences
More than 30 years after this was published, it has held up like a great wine. It’s a fascinating read and snapshot of a crucial period in the history of zinfandel. The first-hand discussions with some of the pioneers complement all the hear-say there is about who did what to discover how to make great zins. Even though we are a couple of generations of winemakers down the road and many other greats have emerged in the intervening years, I loved the connection this book made with those early days. The book is very approachable, while not shying away from some philosophical musings.
Fundamental wine enthusiast reading about Zinfandel in California and its origins. Also covers history of Ridge Vineyards and other old vines sources. Includes several tips for wine tasting and keeping standards objective. My copy is heavily annotated, highlighted, and worn, loaned to many. There are more recent books, with greater scientific results, but none more interesting to read.
