Emma Montgomery wouldn't be manipulated into marriage as part of Daddy's business deal—even if he cut off access to her trust fund until she complied. The talented jewelry designer would just make her own way. Or go down trying. Too bad her intended groom—maverick businessman and former crush Nathan Case—made her stubborn stance so difficult. The heat of his touch had her nearly betraying herself at every turn. Resisting Nathan and regaining her money were the name of the game—but meddling with this millionaire might land her right back in his arms!

This was a fun read. Emma's father has cut of her trust fund for the past ten months since he wants her to get married and settle down. Emma has never had to worry about money but now she's learning, she has a degree and has been designing jewelery for years but never took it that seriously. But she is determined not to do what her father wants, she wants love in her marriage and does not want to follow her parent's example.
She had a huge crush on her brother's friend Nathan when she was sixteen and they had a torrid encounter three weeks ago, since then she's been avoiding him but Nathan isolates her at the new year bash and tells her that he wants her to marry him, since it is part of the business deal he's been trying to get to prove to his half-brothers that he deserves the family business even if his mother was her father's much loved, lover.
Nathan of course cares for her and like her father wants to take care of her. Emma doesn't want that, she tries to show him that she is independent and her work important. Of course the man doesn't listen and tries to get her to move in with him when her apartment has mold, but Emma shows him who's in charge.
Honestly, I enjoyed the book. Emma stuck to her guns even when Nathan and her father refused to take her seriously. Nathan was good as well even if he did have a tendency to try and over-ride what Emma was saying.
Apparently this was a debut novel. I’m sorry to say, it should’ve stayed in someone’s drawer. It was absolutely template. And if it’s possible to go “too template-y” Ms. Schield accomplished it. There was an uber-idiotic heroine (I hate those “I’m a woman hear me roar” types that coudn’t possibly roar, not even mewl if their lives depended on it) that also happens to be a spoiled heiress, a testosterone-filled hero with 18th century concept on love that also happens to be a millionaire, the forced-marriage theme (hello, 21st century here!), hiccup-y pacing, plot-holes, tell-more-show-less writing etc.
Ms. Shield probably strove for endearing when she wrote Emma, but ended up with a dumb, silly, idiotic, incapable-of-fending-for-herself, thick heroine. And with Nathan the hopes result was probably an Alpha male with hunk-factor and lots of dough, and instead we got a self-centered, egotistical, unbusinesslike businessman who’s not even using his brain when thinking business, and doesn’t care for the fate of his company, just himself and his quest for proving his brother’s wrong. If that’s good business, no wonder our economy is blooming these days. Oh, right, it isn’t. Duh.
If this were a Harlequin Presents title instead of a Desire one, we’d also have a love-child or two. Lucky we’re spared that one.
This is the first installment of the Case brothers books and I liked it but not too much, because I felt like if the main character (Nathan Case) is practically forced to fell in love with the heroine who is forced into an arranged marriage .. Not that she doesn´t want to, becasue she´s been in love with Nathan since she was a teenager!!!But she says she doesn´t love him, and doesn´t want to marry him and when he wants to marry her she says she doesn´t want marriage without love... so I don´t get her. Apart from that, you meet the other siblings (Max and Sebastian) and see their different personalities.
Lets read next "A Win-win proposition" where Sebastian Case has a steamy realationship with his secretary in Vegas ;) .
One type of heroine I can't stand in romance novels is the one who has the "I don't need a man to take care of me because I'm superwoman and I can do everything on my own." attitude.
DECILE!!!!
Yawn-worthy and capable of producing quite a few eyerolls because who on Earth has heard that some people demand a man marry their daughter for business reasons in the 21st century?
I may occasionally like heroes who are aloof and a tiny bit bossy, but I didn't like Nathan. He felt too pushy and unlikeable for my preferences. Some readers may enjoy reading about men who push women against doors and then start nibbling on their earlobes against their will or something like that, but I don't like that. If the woman says no, then the man should back off and stop pushing the woman for sexual favours.
Didn't really care for the heroine either. She says that she matured a lot and understood the value of money better than she did before, but I felt that she really didn't and she kept saying it mainly for show.
D2094 Jun2011 Emma Montgomery refuses to marry as part of her father's business deal with Nathan Chase. She makes jewelry and works to replace the money she's spent in the last year. She is a strong woman and refuses to be intimidated.
I mistaken read the second book first as I didn't know it was a trilogy. No where on Goodreads or the book itself says it is, but the blurb inside the books does.
The books was cute. A nice fluffy read, nothing too major. The only thing is, the one trope that I am getting sick of is the poor rich girl who has her trust fund taken away and has to make it on her own. The main character Emma spent 100,000 on shoes so her father makes her live on that amount for one year and she has to make it last.
The other thing I wasn't too keen on, was the fact that she is 28 and her father thinks that it is time for someone else to take over her care so makes a business deal with her crush Nathan, that in order for him to do business with her father, he has to marry her. What a load of crap!
I really loved this short, (would have been happier if I would have read this one first before Sebastian's story). It took me no time at all to read, as I was hooked from the first page.
