This book is now ten years old, and unfortunately it shows. Although I liked many of the recipes (they were quick, easy, and used few ingredients) I do not agree with Shulman in all areas health related. (Especially when it comes to foods such as wheat and soy)
I agreed for Shulman in most topic areas (such as butter being healthier than margarine), but not in others. Areas I don't agree with her on are:
. The excessive consumption of soy as a healthy alternative to dairy products (We now know that excessive consumption of soy is NOT healthy, especially soy cheese) she heavily promoted soy all throughout the book.
.She talked about bread a lot, and didn't mention how genetic modification has altered wheat, and how bread should not be consumed as much as actual grains themselves
.Shulman did briefly mention coconut oil, but did not recommend it. We now know coconut oil is one of the best oils to use (I don't know any doctors who haven't recommended it)
I skimmed more than read. The pick-3 part was most interesting - slow carbs, lean proteins, and essential fats at 40 30 30 percent. Many other suggestions in the book, I am already implementing into my healthy lifestyle change. I certainly have lots to work on and shouldalso reread the other health books on my shelves.
I really like this book and refer to it often. It's easy to read and makes sense. It doesn't just tell you what you should eat, but it explains how certain foods are beneficial.
