All roads lead home when that’s where you’ve left your heart.

Compass Brothers, Book 1

Silas Compton always had his eye on Lucy, the veterinarian’s daughter. He was even content to wait for the girl of his dreams to grow up before getting anywhere near her with his family’s double-edged legacy.

Waiting around led to fooling around with his best friend—and an impulsive eruption of desire that Lucy’s innocent eyes weren’t meant to see. Figuring Compton Pass wasn’t big enough for either the three of them or the pain he’d caused, Silas let loose his tightly reined wanderlust and headed for Alaska.

Ten years later, when an oil rig accident sends him home, he braces himself for the reopening of old wounds. Instead he finds himself in the care—and welcoming arms—of Lucy and Colby, whose marriage has plenty of room for the man they both still love. And forgive with all their hearts.

As things start to unravel at Compass Ranch, Silas must dig deep for the strength to assume his rightful place in the Compton family…and lay the foundation for a future with his lovers. If he can forgive himself.

This book is overflowing with sexy cowboys who like to saddle up and ride each other as well as the woman of their dreams. The likelihood of becoming addicted to their ranch family is high. With three more stories yet to come, beware. You won’t be able to read just one!

This was another random buy from the All Romance Ebooks website. I had some high hopes for it...it sounded like a great story...but the book didn't really live up to my expectations. Which is disappointing.

Series Note:
First book in the "Compass Brothers" series about four brothers raised on a Wyoming ranch who take off to different parts of the U.S. to start new lives.

Summary:
As a teenager, Silas Compton wanted Lucy, but knowing she was too young and that he wanted her too much, he left her alone. Even when his best friend, Colby, started dating her. The problem with that? Silas was also attracted to Colby. And one day he gives in to that attraction and kisses Colby...then Lucy walks in on them and runs off after seeing their passionate embrace. Knowing that he's ruined everything, Silas takes off the next day, moving to Alaska where he spends the next ten years doing any dangerous job he can. Until a terrible accident sends him back to Wyoming to heal.

Back at the ranch, Colby and Lucy (now married) welcome him with open arms. Both realize how much they've missed Silas and will do anything to claim him as theirs. But it will take a little bit of work to convince Silas they are ready for his brand of loving and that they can survive what others will think of their relationship.

Review:
I hate writing reviews where most of what I have to say is on the negative side of the fence. It makes me feel bad. But I prefer to write my reviews honestly, if fairly.

I had such high hopes for this story. A) because it's a bi-menage story (which I LOVE), and B) because the premise sounded interesting. And the premise was good. Silas is attracted to a man and a woman, who also happened to be attracted to each other. But feeling like there's no way things could work out, that's he's only made problems for Lucy and Colby, Silas runs. Then returns 10 years later when he's injured to find things are still the same between the three of them. It was a good set up to the story. But that's about really the only above average aspect about story for me.

My biggest complaint was that this story was way oversimplified and very under developed. Everything happens in a blink with very little struggle. Silas gets hurt, comes home, gets confronted by the two people he loves and before you can blink, they are all together. It went way too smoothly. These people have been apart 10 years. There needed to be a little more to them working it out. Every aspect of conflict in the story was just solved too easily. Which is shown by the fact that i think the main chunk of the story takes place over maybe 2-3 days. I want more than that out of a romance. Emotional struggle, angst, that back and forth tug/pull. Not a simple conversation and all is well. There wasn't enough delving into the characters emotions for me to buy fully into the romance.

Along with that, I didn't feel like I knew the characters well enough. Especially Lucy. She was just sort of there in the story. And Colby...I don't think he was even given a last name. At least I didn't notice one. For me, that doesn't say much about the character development. It just seemed like there was a lot left out...like how Lucy and Colby got back together after Lucy caught Silas and Colby kissing. If you want me to connect with a romance, then I need to connect with the characters.

I also didn't like how Silas is still recovering from serious injuries yet he's jumping into the sack with Lucy and Colby, going to bars and looking for fights and all that. The guy nearly died! Give him a chance to get well, for pete's sake! The first day there he's hardly awake then suddenly he's screwing around. Umm, no! I can suspend reality on some things, but not stuff like that.

Which leads to the realistic aspect...I could pick on the fact that this story is very unrealistic all around. It falls into that 'never happen in real life' category, but I'm not bothered by that. It's an idealistic story, but that's okay. I only wish we lived in a world where people could have alternative relationships like this one without being judged.

My last issue is with the writing itself. At times it was way too wordy with adjectives dumped in all over the place. There was one line I read during a sex scene that literally made me stop and shake my head because the excess adjectives just made it sound ridiculous:

The salty emission mingled with her copious lubrication to facilitate his amplified motion.

I mean, really? That's not sexy to read during a sex scene.

And at times, the flow of the book just wasn't there. Sometimes the wording seemed jerky and ill-fitting. Which all seemed to make my other issues with the book worse.

So yeah, this book disappointed me. I was hoping for so much more. But I'm intrigued enough about the other brothers that I will at least read one more book in the series.

WARNING, this book contains: explicit sex and language, m/f, m/m, m/f/m, oral, anal, bi-menage HEA, D/s, toys referenced, and a scene in the beginning that involved one hero with a different male and female

This book was a freebie on Amazon and of course I had to snatch it up. I needed a break between reviewe books and decided that this would be a steamy, quick read to break up the monotony. Well...it was certainly steamy. o_O Let me preface by saying I love menages and erotic romance. So the fact that this was a menage story was a plus, not a minus for me. Northern Exposure got off to a good start for me. I felt Si's angst and pain at being caught making out with his best friend, Colby, by his best friend, Lucy (who's also Colby's girlfriend). This all went down when Si and Colby were 18, Lucy being a couple of years younger. Engrossed in shame, Silas decides the best thing for him to do is to leave the family farm and let Colby and Lucy be together without him messing things up. He won't be able to be around Colby and hide his passion for him so the best thing to do is leave. Fast forward 10 years, Silas lives his life as a longer, with impersonal hookups and drowning his sorrows in alcohol. Silas gets seriously injured in an oil rig explosion and is sent home back to Compass Ranch to recover. Lucy and Colby are now happily married but both feel like something's missing. That something is Silas.

Ok so the book had me hooked up until Silas returned home, been back a couple of hours and Colby and Lucy were already jumping his bones. This man has a steel rod in his leg, broken femur, contusions and cuts that are still healing. He's in a lot of pain. And yet he's able to participate (halfway participate) in a freaking threesome! And to make things worse (for me) Colby licked, devoured, ate Silas's spunk from Lucy's snatch! I know there's a word for that but for the life of me I can not remember it. Needless to say, this was the first of several times I gagged while reading this book. I guess they find spunk tasty and sexy. Never mind the suspension of disbelief that someone who just survived an explosion can get an erection and have a threesome with no ill-effects but also the fact that they talk for like 5 minutes, decide that they are going to all be together and everyone is all tra-la-la, our life is perfect now, let's f*ck.

I felt that the resolution was too easy. The acceptance was too easy. The glimpse of angst in the beginning quickly disappeared once Silas returned to Compass Ranch. I felt the sex scenes had no emotional connection whatsoever. These three people supposedly wanted to be together for the last 10 years but I didn't feel that when they were having sex. It was more like, they're aroused, let's do it.

I am interested in reading Silas's brothers' stories. So I will be checking out the next book in the series. Imagine that. I just hope there's no chowing down on another man's spunk. That is so not sexy.

This one started out pretty good, with lots of promise. But it didn't deliver fully for me. I felt like I knew Silas, one of the main characters, but I didn't feel the same way about Lucy and Colby? Not as much.

And...there was way too much descriptive sex for my liking. Maybe if the story and characters were more fully developed? It just did nothing for me. I didn't need a play by play of ...everything. Eh, maybe if I was more invested in the characters...but no.

I did like that Silas had three brothers who might have some interesting stories of their own, so maybe I'll revisit this series and give it another shot one day.

God, is was waaaay to sappy for me. I just don't like these MMF books where all three participants act like the other person hung the moon and bursts into tears if either of them has less than 15 orgasms in an hour period. This book was more unrealistic in that you have cowboys, in conservative Wyoming, being shoved into this threesome relationship by their parents and family members. Let me ask you. How many cowboy books with a MM or ménage theme do you find the families pushing the men to get it on? Literally. It was just odd. Don't get me wrong though. This book had all my favorite elements in it: cowboys, hot alpha men, MM lovin' and ménage. I really tried to like it but I could stop rolling eyes and groaning.

On a side note, I wouldn't mind taking the guy on the cover home though...

I needed more of the background story on the three main characters. You get a little glimpse of what happened to cause Silas to leave, but you don't get how everything came ot that point. Also I find it odd that Colby and Lucy each had insecurities that the other would only want Silas once he came home, but they never really talked about it, they just sort of brushed it under the rug and somehow as soon as Silas was back they started a "triad", and everything was fine. No one was uncertain of the others caring more about each other. I would have given this 3 stars at least had I gotten more background info on the three main characters, and maybe a bit more conflict, and the married couple actually talking about their insecurities together. Also, I maybe would have given Silas time to heal before jumping right into bed, and maybe make him work for it a little bit since he just up and ran away and didn't keep in touch for 10 years. That said, I cannot wait for the rest of the stories, and I'm hoping they get better as they go along. I assume Seth is next since he showed up at the end, and I have to hear how the situation with his boss's daughter turned out!

a good menage is always a pleasure to read and i liked a lot about this book, however it did have some failures to my mind. Firstly Red, he lost all around, and his love for Silas though not returned or acknowledged was obvious. Secondly Colby & Lucy, just accepted everything so quickly with no question .. the whole thing was just a little too fast paced .. but still i will read on as the main story arc looks as though it will continue through the return of the other three brothers

I always wondered what it would be like to write a story with someone, and judging by the highly entertaining author blurb, Mari Carr and Jayne Rylon had a ball.

The series is an intriguing take on four Wyoming brothers as their disparate lives converge back home at Compass Ranch for a family crisis. As per usual with cowboy romances, the eldest brother, Silas, left home for tragic reasons and is only returning a decade later because of traumatic injury.

Happily, that's where "typical" ends with this story. Silas was injured not in the pursuit of glory on the rodeo circuit, but as a result of a borderline suicidal act to save his fellow oil rig workers in Alaska. I liked the character of Silas a lot: he's a classic alpha male with a slew of control issues, complicated by the fact his soul is tortured, struggling to deal with his bisexuality.

This character, this story had so much promise! But, unfortunately, the constraints of today's abbreviated romance novels rushed the development of plot and character, sacrificing both. SIlas returns to face the two people he loves most in the world, both of whom immediately take him back with little to no questioning, nurse him back to health in, like, a day, and then they all proceed to have sex together. Consequently, this results in stilted dialogue that tarnishes what should be an emotional powerhouse of a reunion and detracts from the erotic potential of their reconciliation.

Still, I liked it enough to buy the rest of the series: four books in which each brother's tale receiving equal treatment (the last one due to release Spring 2012). The writing is engaging enough - in particular, the descriptions of setting are lovely, and Silas' inner angst rings pretty true. The sex scenes would have benefited from less cheesy dialogue, though - sometimes it's better if lovers just keep their mouths shut.

It seemed promising, but somewhat failed to really deliver.
This book overall is too short, most of the story takes place over only a few days - a few days in Alaska so that one of the hero realized he was letting life flowing away, then a few days in Wyoming, where everything got solved almost by miracle. The characters were also very schematic in their descriptions and lacked both depth and development. However there were a few nice moments, for instance when the hero starts to read the letters he received and kept without opening from the heroine, the feelings the three had for each other were very obvious then.
The hot scenes worked for me, however I absolutely did not believe them to be realistic, considering the poor state of one of the guys at the time. Like the rest, I also had the feeling the three could jump very easily in an unconventional relationship and a different kind of sex, at least 2 had not experienced before, without ever feeling any misgivings or doubts.
Very difficult to believe in.

Unrealistic

I like reading about cowboys, kink, and menage', and I like these authors, but I didn't like this book. It was so unrealistic at times I found myself rolling my eyes. I don't care how much you think you're in love at 18, you don't jump right back on the bandwagon when you haven't seen or talked to them in ten years. When someone is injured enough to have to be sedated for travel, you don't jump their bones almost immediately. And no family or community is going to be that welcoming of a triad relationship that quickly with no angst or doubt or discussion. I expected more from these authors.

After reading another book centered around polyamory, I was looking for more threesome books to read and randomly came across this one. The blurb got me intrigued, but after the prologue and the first chapter/s set in Alaska, all I got was mostly disappointment. Without wanting to spoil too much, let's just say that I got more invested in that bittersweet fling Si had with his work buddy than in anything going on after his return home.

My Review:
This was an interesting book- a totally new style for me to read, but I really enjoyed it. Silas left for Alaska 10 years ago- running after Lucy caught him and Colby together. Now he's been hurt in a drilling rig accident and has had to come home to recover. Colby and Lucy are married now, but they both still love Silas and want him to be part of their relationship. It's been 10 years and Silas never guessed that he hadn't totally blown his relationship with both Lucy and Colby. He loves them both and the surprise is that the feel the same way about him.

I have read complaints about the story development in this book, but I thought that it was done really well. All three of these people are really likable. As a reader, you get to know Silas the best because the first part of the story is all about him and his struggles in Alaska. But I felt like the depth of feeling for all three of these characters was really honest. These scenes are really beautiful, really sexy, and even really sweet.

I think that there was an extra level of trust and intimacy because Colby and Lucy have been married for 10 years that wouldn't have been there if they had attempted this relationship 10 years prior. They were able to support and communicate with each other non-verbally which I think helped in a situation that could have been awkward at first. It was also good since Silas is hurt and dealing with a serious injury.

This was a great read- interesting, beautiful, and totally sexy. There are three more books to come in this series. There were some hints as to the story lines at the end of this one. I look forward to reading all of them.

Silas was caught kissing Colby by Lucy, who loved Silas and was dating Colby. After that encounter Si took off for Alaska and didn't return home for 10 years and the only reason he returned was because he was severely injured in an accident. Lots had changed in the ten years he was gone, Lucy and Colby married, Colby was the foreman on Silas' family ranch, but one thing remand the same...Lucy and Colby were both still in love with Silas. It was nice to see that the family, especially Silas' parents, were so encouraging for the three of them to be in a relationship. I wish the book was longer, the sex was steamy, and the interaction between all parties was good - no jealousy at all - just pure intense emotions.

I look forward to seeing what the other three Compass brothers are up to.

This is a salty sweet romance between three childhood bestfriends. This is M/F/M menage erotic romance with M/M that is really hot and well written without getting too bondage or master/slave. There starts really sad with the loss of Red, and I would have liked to have Red's own romance story. Quick and story read but wonderfully hot to keep you warm in the wintertime. I got this free on kindle.

This could have been hot, it had the makings for it. But all the sex just seemed flat to me. Silas the dominate male in this threesome never seemed to deserve all the angst that he brought Colby and Lucy. He was gruff and demanding and it was just not believable after being away for ten years and they had never actually even been with each other why would it all fall into place now. It didn't work for me.

Really good MMF triad story with boy boy interaction (my favorite! SQUEEEE!!!). I found it a fast paced page turner but a bit short...would love more juicy details. Awesome sex scenes as usual from Jayne Rylon. Great intro to the other 3 brothers who will be highlighted in the following books.

My Review: I originally read the Compass Girls series a couple of years ago and loved it, but when I went to purchase this series they weren't available. Luckily they just were re-released so I was able to pick them up. I love all of the characters in this series and it was great to read the beginnings of the family a little more. I of course love the setting of a ranch in Wyoming. I also like the way that each of the characters works hard, is dedicated and loyal, but above all family comes first. It reminds me so much of home where hard ranch life is it and family is what matters most. With that said, the steam pouring off the pages of this book makes it almost too hot to handle, but the sex scenes do not take over the story, they are nicely integrated. The development of Silas is great along with Colby and Lucy, though with a little communication everything could have been easier, but it is a classic romance trope and easy to use. This book is a fast, easy read with great characters and loads of heat.

Two cowboys, one cowgirl, and romance? That's the start of Mari Carr's and Jayne Rylon's Northern Exposure, book one of their series The Compass Brothers and set on the fictional Compass Ranch in Wyoming.

Silas is a deliciously grumpy cowboy with exotic sexual tastes who's first time giving in to passion is witnessed by the one girl he's always wanted. Fearing he's driven her away and lost her forever, Silas hits the road, returning only after a terrible accident leaves him with no place else to go. No one is more surprised than Silas when he discovers that home is exactly where his heart always was.

It's an engaging book with a great story and loads of tension, both sexual and otherwise. There's a great buildup to an HEA that is happy but you can tell that these lovers have a struggle ahead of them, a realistic approach to a romance story that I really like. There's no fairy tale here, just a raw, consuming love that all parties must work for.

Menage relationships are difficult to write and make believable, but Mari Carr and Jayne Rylon succeed with Northern Exposure. It's a real page turner. And fortunately, there are sequels for the other points on the compass featuring Silas' brothers as well as their children. All are equally worthy of a read.

This one is worth your time.
