One man's fight against Terror

This book is a thrill ride from the beginning. It is one man's battle to help the U.S. battle on terror. It held me on the edge of my seat from the beginning. It is very well written. It gives you insight into the minds of many after the 9/11 tragedy and what we all feel needs to happen now.
I would say this would make the best seller lists with no problem!! I received this book through Voracious Readers.

This book was a touching, well-crafted and quick read. In this dramatic book, The Watchman of Ephraim introduces themes of military strategy and the formation of a counter-terrorism company out of the tragic 9/11 loss of innocent lives. The author walks you through the emotions the characters feel from 9/11 to show through loss comes gain as it sparked Cris De Niro to create his company, The Watchman of Ephraim, and build his Archangel team to fight terrorism in the USA. This is a very memorable book due to the extensive military characters Gerard uses through the team development to show how each branch of the military plays an active roll in the protection of the country through De Niro’s company. One question I had after reading this book was when can I start the next in the series! I absolutely loved this read and found it to be very gripping emotionally and intellectually. From the strategies the teams must use to fight terrorism to the emotions of family and loss. Readers can look forward to a very gripping and realistic read that makes you feel you are part of the De Niro Watchman team. I highly recommend this book to those that enjoy military strategy and counter-terrorism style books. I look forward to reading more within the series!

This is the first book by Gerard de Marigny that I've read, but I now want to read the rest.

This book is about a billionaire who loses his wife in the 9/11 attack and some years later he takes over running an anti-terrorism organisation which uncovers a new terrorist plan. The book is really well written especially because it reveals the complexities of human emotions, and deals with the raw side of human nature in a careful but honest way. We see the desire for revenge and closure, the guilt and loss, love and friendship. It seems to cover all bases.

The book is full of details, but with a fast enough plotline so you're not overloaded. Instead the details and footnotes makes the story feel more realistic. With well timed humour in places, and a gripping storyline, I would definitely recommend this to others!

Family, friendship, loyalty, terrorism, grief, religion, convincing characters and a fast-moving plot.

If you like a good guys versus bad guys action story, this book is for you. de Marigny swept me up with the characters and the plot from the start and at each stage, I knew something was going to happen, but I didn't know what. With lots of money to splash around and cool toys to use the main character spoke to the computer nerd in me.
A satisfying ending (no spoilers from me) that concludes this storyline, but leaves me wanting to read the next book in this series so I can to get to know the characters better.

My Favourite Quote:
It was times like this that Wang was especially proud of her Chinese heritage. She learned how to keep her temper in check, from her parents. My dad used to say, “Hyenas laugh, baboons scream, and fools raise their voices in anger.”

I would like to thank "Voracious Readers Only" and author Gerard de Marigny for my complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only. I finished reading it last night. I found the book very likable and easy to read from the beginning. The plot line pulls you along till it really gets heated. At that point I did want to know what was going to happen to the cast of characters. The footnotes on the military terminology was really useful to those who may not automatically know about the terms. I am going to pass this book along in our free library system so that others can enjoy the fast moving plot line.
Good book. I did like it through out the entire read. Clear writing and easy to grasp the plot and the twists in the book.

This was an amazing story following the lives of a family after the atrocity following 9/11. Not only did you get the heartbroken man and his children but his work to help others. Included in this terrific page turner, that got you in the first paragraph and didn't let go was a growing love story, revenge, loyalty, teamwork and brotherhood. Cris De Niro is a man you can trust with your life. A Wonderful book. Thank you Gerard Dr Marigny!

A billionaire ex hedge fund manager and patriot, Cris DeNiro, buys a private counter-terrorism consulting firm. He changes the name of the firm from Liberty Defense Contractors to The Watchman Agency. He installs his brother in law and formerly Commanding Officer of the Naval Special Warfare Center as the agency's President. Add a cabal of Iranian terrorists with ugly plans for the U.S. of A. and you have a great plot. I liked this one.

Gerard is one of my Goodreads friends. If you haven't tried him yet I recommend that you do. Our hero Cris is a practicing Christian and makes no bones about it. You don't see that much and I like it. In fact the only other instance I have found was a "terrorist" trilogy co-written by Oliver North and Joe Musser beginning with the "Mission Compromised" title.

This book is captivating from the start, Cris De Nero is the main guy who’s wife died during 9/11 the story is then set ten years on and every action scene is played out in my mind like a movie. I specifically enjoyed the lavishness of Cris’ life, being a very wealthy man learning about his life and the things he owns, however he is also very likeable and kind and you instantly find the hero of the book.
Excellently written and captivating. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

I enjoyed this book very much! It was very difficult to put down once I got started. As soon as I finished this book, I dove quickly into book 2 just to continue the story - it is equally as difficult to stop reading for any amount of time. Gerard's books are certainly up to par with the great fictional bestsellers that line my bookshelves.

Title: The Watchman Of Ephraim
Author: Gerard
Reviewed by Fran Lewis

Ash, cinders, smoke and fog filled the air, blinded the vision and burned the hands, faces and bodies of many as the two planes minutes apart crashed into the Twin Towers forever changing the skyline of our magnificent city and leaving in its wake a carnage that would forever be embedded in the mind, hearts and soul of every American. Air permeating with a foul and burnt smell that would remain as a lingering perfume that would haunt those that live near what is now names ground zero forever, one man, Kris DeNiro, shares his story with everyone as he remembers that fateful morning when all he wanted to do was present his precious wife, Lisa with some magnificent roses, take her to breakfast and savor the life he so proudly loved not knowing seconds later it would all end. 8:46 A.M. on September 11, 2001 would be the time that no one would ever forget. Walking into the North Tower, carrying these magnificent roses, Cris witnesses a sight that he would never forget, a pain that seared through his entire body and a loss that would never be replaced. As he walked to the elevators only to be shot back, burned, pushed and thrown into a heap on the street. Clothes on fire, body burned and trying to make sense of what happened, he manages to help a woman in distress, answers his cell phone only to hear his wife’s plea for help hoping it was not too late. As the author allows the reader to hear Lisa’s voice, her final words and experience the pain and agony of one man, who goes back into the building only to be forced to turn back. As he walked up the steps and made it to the 30th floor one firemen who would become a lifelong friend, ushers him back outside. Explaining that his sons needed him and that there was nothing they could do to save those on the 104th floor where his was trapped, Cris made his way back down, left the towers and had to find a way back into the world that would never be the same and deal with a pain, or permanent throb that would always be a reminder of that horrific day.

Moving to Las Vegas, millionaire, Cris DeNiro started over again along with Lisa’s brother and his best friend Ricci. Starting their own business they would soon become involved in missions so dangerous and grave putting them in danger yet, hopefully saving the world from another September 11th. Working his way to the top of the hedge fund world, he becomes the owner of his own counter terrorism agency. As De Niro reads from the Bible, he finds a passage titled the “Watchman of Ephraim,’ a defender who watched and defended his land. Buying into this counter terrorism agency he decides to form sculpt, form and create one that would mirror the original of the Watchman for the United States.

Cris DeNiro sent his brother-in-law to begin work as President of the new counter terrorism agency The Watchman Agency formerly Liberty Defense Contractors. Upon entering the office he encounters a pompous man named Les Pastek acting as President and another Charley Santappai, Director of Operations. But, that changes in as heartbeat as Ricci enlightens everyone and explains to Pastek his new role or fate.

At a gathering at his home in Las Vegas close friend and firefighter, Keith Tompkins asks Cris for a favor. Prominent in the news is the building of a mosque at Ground Zero that many; especially the family of the victims and Cris are opposed to. Enlisting his help to find out more about who is behind it and hoping he can some how buy the property of stop the construction of it, causes Cris, unknowingly to come front and center with the man that would eventually try and bring down a lot more than the Twin Towers. Hiding behind his true agenda, and pretending to want to know his views on the mosque being built there, Cris discuss his viewpoint as this man puts his people on alert and wants to find out more about our billionaire mogul.

The ten-year anniversary is coming up. A sober reminder of the horror of that day. What could be next? Are we ever going to be safe? As DeNIro viewed the site-remembered the day, you hear his voice, echo his words on the page as he reminds us of how many were buried alive there in what many of us call a true burial ground and building anything there would desecrate the memory of those lost and much more.

As he reflects and is approached by one man who questions his feelings about this mosque not realizing that he could soon be more than the downfall of our country. Victims reduced to ash on contact, soot, dust and cinder how could anyone in due conscience think to build on such sacred ground. But, the man, Aref Zamani masks his thoughts and marks his words. Alert! Red! Flash! Zamani- sends his men to investigate Cris. Would he realize the danger before it is too late?

As the true or prime focus of this company is brought to light we learn the history involved and behind the name Watchman and the reason why he formed this company. Purpose: Never let your guard down. Protect your country. Since our government had no warning nor did the American people- We were caught off guard that day- not forewarned by our intelligence organizations and the end result we all know.

As the new team and heads get to work and form their teams and choose their respective staffs, Cris informs Mugsy, Charlie and Johnny F the new head of intelligence and security of the real reason behind the agency and the Black Ops unit he needs to form and keep under the radar of everyone. ArchAngel: Never again will he allow what happened to his wife Lisa happen again. Just what this group will do and who will run it and how many men will be involved that remains to be seen.

Intel information alerts Cris about an operation in Mexican dealing with a dangerous drug cartel. Sending two men to investigate and find out more information should have been no problem. But, there’s a plant or traitor working within their walls whose feeding Zamani information and the end result proves fatal when they come face to face with their killers. Through the information found in their new Big Brother computer network they learned about a 25 million dollar cash flow related to a Mexican operation. Knowledge needed: Is this money funding the building of the mosque or something else? Frustrated whey they do not hear from the agents, what they learn will leave permanent chills down your spine after you read the events so expertly described by this outstanding author. What really ads to the plot is the author allows the reader to hear the inner thoughts, conflicts and emotions of each character when he/she expresses doubt, fear or conflict.

Truth be told and the traitor uncovered what happens next will alert this person of impending danger when teaming up with the wrong side. But, although injured and hurt what happens next creates fear in the minds of the terrorist forcing them to take stronger action and hopefully revenge on the one man he is really after: DeNiro.

DeNiro’s team finds out more than these people realize and the race to see which side will succeed is definitely on and the starting gun has already been fired.

As Charley and the crew of the Santana go on a recovery mission and hopefully bring back the two agents, they face other adversaries before the truth about what really happened to the men is revealed. The end result will cause your heart to race, ignite your energy and create a definite rise in your anxiety level as you cannot put the book down, rush to turn each page and wait for the explosive ending.

Thinking he can bring down DeNiro hacking into his network, Zamani is toying with the wrong man and just might be out of his league. The Watchmen are smart, clever and crafty and definitely not to be under estimated and Americans: never underestimate us either!

Each member on high Orange Alert at all times using methods not often conventional, you come to route for their success and with they were not just part of the author’s imagination in this first rate thriller.

Underlying this plot is one between Cris and Moriah that is not fully developed but hopefully will unfold in the future. Each losing a spouse on September 11, 2001, their feelings even after ten years raw, and the memories fixed in their minds, they are not ready to fill that empty void. Will they in the future remains to be seen as the main even has not been unfolded. Meeting her at a July 4th gathering the author allows the reader to her thoughts feels and entertains her doubts about meeting his billionaire and his two sons. Will something happen between them? That remains to be seen.

The truth behind Zamani’s miss is revealed and the players are all in place- bomb is set to explode and the martyrs thinking they will succeed. A bomb is supposed to explode over Las Vegas is the goal? Can he be stopped? Wait and see! What they have planned is so far creative that no one will expect it. Invade DeNiro’s ranch- capture or interrogate him but first they have plans for his kids, staff and more- horrific, deadly-bone-chilling to say the least.
As the phones go dead, computers compromised, leaks revealed- what happens next you will not believe as the enemy finds it way to close to its targets. Battle lines drawn- on site combat- families in danger. DeNiro needs to work fast as ArchAngel and Shadow Wolves team up to fight for their lives when the enemy comes knocking at their front door.

But, just who would deliver this package and where will it land? One twist, turn and surprise that I cannot reveal: You can place your bets on the roulette wheel as to who comes out the winner: Red the Enemy or Black DeNiro!

Just what happens you will not expect and will surprise the reader. One-man fights not only for his family, county and the memory of his wife Lisa, but those who gave theirs on 9/11 and those who lost theirs fighting this war you have to read for yourself. Who wins and who loses? Just how many lives are sacrificed and what is next for the team of the Watchman- only the author Gerard demerging knows that for sure. Let’s hope he brings Cris, Brian, Johnny F, Michelle and the rest back again in a sequel to this great thriller. This book is a sober reminder that we must never let our guard down, we must fight for our country and we must remember those who gave their lives that horrific day. Tuesday: September 11, 2001: Never Again!

I dedicate this review to all those who lost their lives that day and to the author’s friend Daniel and to Janine Gonzales my student who died in the first tower.

A book so well written and filled with suspense it kept me on the edge of me seat and I read it in one day.

Thank you for giving me the honor or reviewing your book.

My thanks go to Gerard de Marigny for the lengths he went to, so I was able to receive a free copy of this amazing book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks also to Voracious Readers Only for putting me in touch with Gerard.

This book is captivating from the very start and that doesn’t let-up all the way through. Gerard has a natural style of writing that makes the book easy to read, yet don’t’ take that to mean the story is lacking in any details, far from it. The characters, the scenes, the plot, described in perfect detail, you can feel the love Chris feels for his wife and not just what he experienced as the Towers fell, but what he felt; you experience what Les feels as he realises his potential mistake; the initial dislike from Richard when Moriah is introduced. It i those subtle touches that Gerard adds that do make all the difference.

9/11 changed not just the face of American but the lives of many, it also brought many others closer together, bonded forever by loss and sacrifice and this too is reflected, with respect, by Gerard. The journey Chris and the other characters have taken since that fateful day is well written and entwined throughout the story. He accurately has shown it’s just not that simple to forget and move on, trauma such as this live with you forever. For many, there is little we can do to change what has happened, but Chris has money and he utilises that for the greater good in his creation of the Watchman.

There is a consistency to this book, a consistency and great character development that make the Watchman of Ephraim believable and I feel because it is so plausible, it does make it that much more enjoyable. Helped, as I’ve said, by the style of writing that makes you feel like you’re in the book, alongside the characters.

I’m very much looking forward to reading further books in this series, alongside anything else Gerard de Marigny writes. He truly has a natural gift.

I quite honestly had never heard of Gerard de Marigny before receiving the offer from Voracious Readers, and now I don't think I will ever forget his name! Right from the very first paragraph, my attention was drawn to the emotions of the main character. Mr. de Marigny managed to tug at the heartstrings immediately by describing the kind of love we all look for in life and then make us feel the panic, pain and immediate heartache as the main character struggles with the events of 9/11. It doesn't happen often for me, but throughout the entire book it felt like I was watching a movie...that I was right there in the action!

Having known someone who lost a family member on this tragic day, it was hard not to stop the tears as it felt as though I was right there witnessing every move each character made.

Mr. de Marigny continually causes the reader to not only question their own mortality, but the question of the struggles we all would face in relation to faith and how to carry on while raising children, seeking answers, and trying to ensure that those responsible pay for their actions.

I will definitely be looking for more of Gerard de Marignys writings to enjoy!

This is clearly the first in an intended series and there is quite a lot of setting-up, which presumably is not included in subsequent books. It is unusual in at least two ways. Firstly, the main character is a Christian, who uses his faith in times of crisis as well as the good times. Secondly, there is a great deal of technical information about acronyms, weapones, etc., most of which appears in footnotes. I don't think I've ever read a novel that included footnotes. Having said that, it is useful to have that information on the same page, rather than in a glossary at the end.

The plot is well thought through and procedures are well documented. The characters are likeable and one cares about what happens to them. There are unexpected plot twists right to the end, just when one thought it was finished, along comes another surprise. All in all an enjoyable read.

I loved this book! When I got it, I was hoping for a geopolitical thriller as advertised and this did not disappoint.

The Watchman Of Ephraim is the story of a billionaire, Cris De Niro, following the death of his wife and unborn son in the Twin Towers on 9/11. Ten years later, De Niro has acquired an anti-terrorism consulting firm and has hired his brother-in-law (retired Navy SEAL) to head the company. You can imagine what possibilities that sets up!

The plot is well-thought out and executed including character building and plenty of twists. It’s a page turner for sure and I can’t wait to get my hands on Book 2, Signs Of War.

The book begins on the morning of 9/11/01, and we follow Cris De Niro’s story through losing his wife, dealing with single fatherhood, and the ways in which the man attempts to save other families from having to deal with what he went through.
In the beginning it started out a little slow for me. There was a lot of catching up to do, as far as De Niro and his relationships were concerned. Eventually, however, the book picked up the pace considerably. The incredibly wealthy De Niro funds the formation of an independent counter-terrorism agency. He seems to have unlimited resources as he outfits them with top of the line equipment and resources.
Something I thought was interesting about the book was how the author described the relationships between De Niro and his friends and business partners. Generally, with this many characters I would expect to be confused, trying to keep them all straight. I never had that feeling here. The author introduces us to characters in such a way that they are memorable, and reminds us of who they are just enough to the point where we understand, but are not annoyed with repetitive details.
Overall the book kind of had the feel of a heist story, like Oceans Eleven or The Italian Job, only here they are trying to protect the country, not stealing anything. It was exciting, and made me want to keep reading.
I did have one issue with the book. Though I thought it was great in almost every respect, I feel obligated to share my opinion about this issue. (This section may contain spoilers, if you don’t want the ending spoiled, skip down to the bolded text). In many places in the book, and also in the synopsis Cris De Niro identifies himself as a Christian, Judeo-Christian, “Biblical view” etc. In my opinion this makes the character inconsistent. Let me explain what I mean… Throughout the book De Niro sets himself up as judge, jury and executioner. When he is targeted in his home, he mercilessly puts to death every person who invaded his home, and then flies to NY to do the same to the leader of the terrorist operations, as well as every person in the building they encountered. In the end he leaves the head-terrorist hanging from the top of a tall building and claims, ‘I’m not going to kill you, you’re going to kill yourself,’ which is based on the idea that the man will kill himself when he doesn’t have the strength to hold on any longer. To this the terrorist replies something to the effect of, ‘I know your Bible, you’re not supposed to murder.’ De Niro then justifies his actions by saying,’I'm not letting the sun go down on my anger.’ These actions and statements go against what the Bible teaches.
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus teaches that we are to love our enemies, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who misuse you. Jesus calls us to love our enemies because the primary goal of a Christian is to be the emulation of Christ. Christ did it, therefore we are to do it. The Bible also teaches that all people are created in the image of God, that includes terrorists, that includes Osama Bin Laden, that includes Hitler. All people were created in the image of God. When we forget this we begin to see terrorists, or anyone else that does not share our beliefs or even preferences as somehow less-than, somehow evil. The truth is that we are all equally evil, and Jesus died for Bin Laden’s sins as well as ours.
Now, I am not saying that De Niro should not have defended his family. It is his duty as a father to protect his boys, just as it is the job of the government to protect it’s people, but this does not give him the prerogative to hunt down everyone that was involved and murder them. There is no reason he could not have bound them all up and shipped them off for a lawful trial. This would have been in accordance with his self-proclaimed Judeo-Christian faith.
The other reason we are to love our enemies is to show them what it means to follow Christ, and hope that they will be led to do the same by our example. it should go against the very nature of a Christian person to wish a non-Christian person to die, whether a terrorist or not. When a terrorist dies we should weep at the loss of one more soul that will not see heaven; One more person, made in the image of God that was not reconciled with Him. Are we God that we can decide who lives or dies?
I read and review many books. All of them feature characters that do things they shouldn’t do. That is part of life, part of human nature. The reason I shared these opinions with you today is because in this case we have a character that is presented as a Christian, but acts in a way that is in opposition to what the Bible teaches, then tries to justify these actions with out-of-context scriptures. I, as a Christian, felt that I could not in good conscience review this book without pointing this out and giving my opinion on it. Thanks for taking the time to read it.
When I give it the rating below, it is based on the fact that it was a well-written, exciting book that I thought deserved a good rating and recommendation. My bible-based disagreements with certain aspects of the character’s morals do not change that.
My final word on the book: This book was exciting, fast-paced and hard to put down. Overall a very good fiction read, though the main character had one inconsistent quality, we were made to feel poignantly the loss he had suffered, and why he so ardently desired revenge. I would recommend it for anyone that loves a good action/heist story or Political Thrillers.

This book, the start of a series, is a well-paced action thriller. The characters are better developed than is often the case in such novels, although there are definitely places where they act in ways that are contrary to what we have seen of them. The opening chapters, describing the main character's experience on 9/11, were extraordinary. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.

So excited about this series! I couldn't put this book down as the action kept coming. I was a Gold Eagle subscriber so it's great to see a similar type series to fill the action void.

Authentic characters and plot lines, timely and relatable stories and a believable team.
I'm on tap to start the next one.

I got a free copy.of this book, not my usual type of read but I decided to try it. I'm glad I did it's set around the terrible events of 9/11 and it sets the scene well without overdoing it. The story is set around a multi millionaire who's wife and unborn child are killed in the twin tower's, and steps he takes to ensure that America stays safe. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone so all I will say is it's a well written book , believable characters and easy to read. I really enjoyed it will have to put the rest of the series on my wish list.

Enjoyed this book thoroughly. Started reading a chapter a night but the last few days it has been impossible!

Story is based around nine eleven and the years that followed. If you enjoy fast paced action stories without over much violence or sex scenes, this is for you.

Can't wait for next in series. Thank you Voracious readers for introducing me to this author with a free copy for an unbiased review. Must get back too the next book now!
