Febr. 17 - March 17, 2012 First read: 5 stars

I did it - I finished it, well at least what there was to finish! Now I'm in line with all the other people waiting for the next chapters :( Please, dear authors, please hurry up and write on, perhaps a bit faster in the future? These stories are totally addictive and I need the next fix asap. Poor Dale, he breaks my heart and I just love him.

Oh - and the video - just lovely!

Dec. 26, 2013 - Febr. 16, 2014 Re-read: 3.5 stars

After the rather disappointing reads lately and, on the other hand, the wonderful 'Handbags at Dawn' story - now my re-read of this book:)
I'm in desperate need of a feel-good-book.
So, finally finished and although the end was just perfect, in between the story dragged on with a never ending walk and to many dream sequences for my liking. So I have to change my rating 3.5 stars.

May 9-13, 2017: Nothing to add.

July 6, 2019: Nothing to add, just changing the rating to 3 stars, the walk and the dream sequences this time were getting even more on my nerves. Sorry, book!

May 18-23, 2021: This time I liked it a lot more. It's funny how even when reading it the fifth time you still find something new in this book..

WIP up to 22a. I am in love. Kate was right in her review, that these stories will hit a soft spot with most m/m readers. There is virtually no sex (none in the first book) and the other books the sex is mostly fade to black. Did this bother me, not in the least. I will say that in the first book I kept waiting for spontaneous orgies to break out a la flash mob, but it has yet to happen. I am happy about that actually. The story does not need it at all. How about them apples!!LOL

There is an amazing rhythm with these stories and with the characters. Each person is so well defined and drawn that you get to know then really well, to the point where you can anticipate and know - they become family. There is a great deal of knowledge and information in these books - farming, horses, psychology, math, the financial world, domestic discipline, literature, etc. Each individual story (actually it is one long story broken out into 4 books - you cannot really read them independent or out of order) is long, no book is under 400 pages. So the commitment is needed!

WIP

I've been re-reading all the Falls Chance books and coming to the end of this one which is sadly still unfinished. I LOVE it regardless and love reading about Dale's journey to understand who he was and how that fits into who he is becoming. Reading about his husbands Flynn, Riley, Paul, Jasper trying to help him is angst-ridden but not in a horrible way. It's very cleansing and joyful. Great series.

Finally, I finished! This appears to be the logical conclusion of Dale's story.

I find these books hard to explain to people. They are odd and there are lots of things about them that bug me. However, the idea of 5 men in a relationship that they view as a marriage is just absurd enough that it has appeal for me.

FCR is like my 20 year old station wagon, it's special and not for everyone. When I encounter other Roadmaster drivers, we give each other a subtle wave or nod, we know we have something good. Meeting other FCR fans is like that.

Falls Chance book #4 is incomplete?

*sobs*

How? How can I wait for it to be finished?

I'm going to need to stand in the corner and calm down now.

In this volume particularly it finally feels as if Dale is making real progress dealing with his childhood issues. I know it is supposed to be complete at Chapter 22b, but it still feels as if there could have been a few more chapters.

ETA: Just realized that Chapter 22b is not the end, and there are still a few chapters to be added. 10/8/12

Another wonderful read, although at times hard going. Just waiting for the conclusion. Hope it's done soon! In the meantime, reading the short stories which have been put into two volumes, each with around 5 stories in each. All available via the yahoo group.

Such a great series and I really adore the characters and world. Magic stuff.

This may very well be the longest book I have ever read.
For sure the longest series I could go on and on to read with it being about the same MC being the sole of it. I get bored easy and at times find I have to read a different book before I can go on in a series like this. NOPE not here.
I Frigging LOVED it!! Didn't really want it to end.

The first of the two companion books that make up Silver Bullet, this is the fourth book of the Falls Chance Ranch series.

Also referred to as "The Ranch Side", it plays more or less parallel to Silver Bullet Everest , the second companion book. They can both stand seperately their own but are best read together. Neither can be read without knowing the series first though.

Content warnings include:

As the subtitle says, it focuses on what happens at the ranch with the main five Dale, Riley, Flynn, Paul and Jasper. Where Mustang Hill was Jasper's book, this is Paul's book, though there is so much more to it that just that.
It plays one year after Dale arrived at the ranch, with several months having passed since the ending of Mustang Hill , but still ties in seamlessly with the events of the previous books. The first of the three main plotlines focuses on Mason, the first client the ranch takes on since Dale joined them, how he affects the daily life, and him working through his own issues. The second plotline includes more shenanigans about the town of Three Traders, this time focusing on a train robbery rather than the mine, and the engine Silver Bullet, which gives the book its title. The last is about Dale finally feeling save enough to face the childhood trauma he had buried for years, and finding new purpose.

The book also further deepens the characters, going deep into Dale's past and explaining in depth some of his more... seeminly peculiar habits, while also considerably advancing Dale's relationships with Paul and Jasper. Other family members make frequent appearances, some directly like Luath and Gerry, who spend time at the ranch (and we get to know more about them too), as well as indirectly - Tom and Dale exchange frequent emails (and what's happening with Tom and Jake is subject of Silver Bullet Everest .)

I'm still absolutely in love with these characters and this series, and not even the typos and small editing errors that appear more frequently in this one than the previous books make me love them any less.

Highlights include:
- adventures in phosphoros
- Gerry camping it up
- foals 😍😍😍
- Caleb and Joseph visit the ranch!
- lots and lots of interpreation of classical (children's) literature
- something really sad about bubbles
- someone gets a tattoo
- so much focus on Paul!!
- insights into Paul and Flynn's relationship and how the two of them work together and it's beautiful💜

As of Chapter 23 I have stopped reading this free online (serial) story.

I've been a long time fan of this serial and i enjoyed it very much. It's an interesting serial with a plot I never thought I would like. It was good to read about Dale's journey as he grew more into himself and faced some hard choices.

However, there are some things that are no longer working for me:
- yes, this is a serial and serial have longer than most stories. But there is a hell of a lot of repetition going on here. Throughout the stories, Dale grew, but also kept making some of the same mistakes over and over again (some with good reason, some not) and we keep being stuck on the same old issues. So you can say that the story has become stale. Throughout Silver Bullet, there were some more significant changes and I liked that, but after the story got back to Dale after the Everest part he goes on to make the same mistake(s) he did before as if he hasn't learned anything. That no longer works for me.

- The story is longwinded. Yes, it's a serial, but even for a serial Silver Bullet now spans about the length of all previous stories combined.

- Silver Bullet needs to be finished. It all started out - in part - with a new client. His story is still mostly unfinished as we switched to Jake and Tom in Everest and even after that the client seems to have disappeared (his lone hike is taking forever.
It was split in the Everest part without Silver Bullet really being finished.

- Switching POV. Everest was all about Jake and Tom, but now that they are back on the ranch a lot of the story goes back to Dale, with Jake and Tom in the background. It's no longer really clear who the story is about and where it's going.

- Editing. There no longer is any to be found. On the forums, one of the authors mentioned that they are very busy (understandable) and will get to editing when they take a year off. It's no excuse to keep on writing and posting parts of chapters that are riddled with mistakes (not too bad, but still) and that just need to see an editor (yes, I know it's a serial online fiction).

- As I have mentioned, there seems to be no end in sight. It's hard to tell where the authors are going with this story, but it keeps on hanging.

- Repetition, I mentioned this one before, but it more or less feels like every situation is created so that Dale can be spanked. Most of the scenes now have a 'been there done that' feel. It was never about the romance, but even that seems to be lacking now.

I am aware a lot of people love this story. I did too, but for now I'm going to leave it and hope it gets wrapped up a bit and back on track with a clear(er) plot in sight and a lot less long winded, because even War & Peace can take a page out of this length.

Re-read: I adore this series. This book is seriously loooooong, but I love it. So much happens, and it was initially a little overwhelming the first time I read it. But now that I've read it a few times, I really appreciate the journey that Dale went on in this book. And the train robbery!

*******************
This book was looooooong. And I was still sad when it ended because this is the last completed of the main stories involving Dale and his men. I've been reading this series in every available moment for over a week, and I honestly want it to continue forever. I'm glad there is still the Everest story and lots of short stories to dive into to keep me in this world a little longer at least.

I did love all the psychology in this book, even if I had to suspend some belief when it came to the little boy inside Dale. I'm already suspending belief when it comes to the stuff Dale "sees" and "knows" so it wasn't too hard. I think the reason I love this series so much is much the same reason Dale loves the ranch--the steadfast way in which the men lead their lives, with the rules they've set and live by, is so freeing. I wholeheartedly wish I could be Dale, living on that ranch with those men, their values and way of life so simple and powerful.

This series may have been missing spice which made me sad (five hunky cowboys who live in a power dynamic relationship?!? Come on! It doesn't get hotter than that), but it didn't matter enough to keep me from devouring every page.

At this writing, this book is still an unfinished serial. Do not let that keep you from reading! The first six chapters are on line and it you request to join the Yahoo group, you may read the new chapters as they emerge.
This is a beautifully written series which has given me many (many many) happy hours. Do yourself a favor and do not try to read this series in one sitting--believe me it does not work. I tried.

This isn't complete yet, but is the series still being updated? I feel I got so close to the ending of this story, but frustratingly there was still the big reveal to come.

To be honest, I think this is my favourite of the lot. Watching the Falls Chance guys dealing with a new client showed another side of them, and Dale continues to charm. He's just so wonderfully British! There should be more high-achieving, intellectual British cowboys out there :D

This series is genuinely my favorite m/m piece of all time, my favorite domestic discipline piece of all time, my favorite piece of fiction of all time? I don't even know, but I love it with my whole heart and I can't even post anything like an unbiased review of it because of that. I've been reading these stories since the very beginning (I became obsessed with Ranger's Nick & Damien series ~2000 and have been following everything Ranger and Rolf have done ever since) and I will probably read them forever and all of time. The only complaint I have is that there aren't more books, or more chapters, or that the characters aren't real people? I'm ridiculous, I know it. Some people have Harry Potter, I have Falls Chance. ;P

Obviously, I can't recommend this entire series highly enough. If you haven't read the stand alone stories in this universe, I recommend all of them too and I believe most of them (a lot, anyway) can be found at Rolf & Ranger's blog, so check those out ASAP.

The men of Falls Chance Ranch take on their first client since Dale, and Dale faces his past.

First of all, this is a really long book compared to Mustang Hill. I'm not complaining because it was amazing, but it's always interesting to read for an extended period of time and not make as much progress on the kindle's percentage through as you think you should have. Also, despite the fact it's really long, it doesn't drag. I was quite happy to just read and read forever, and was kind of sad when it came to a close. Thankfully there is Silver Bullet Everest and a bunch of short stories still to read, as well as whatever book the authors choose to write next.

Going into this book, I wasn't sure how much Dale still had left to grow, but, after reading it, it makes perfect sense that this was probably the book where he makes the most progress. Once again, I love the fact that 'fixing' Dale is not a quick process, but one that the authors have allowed to play out naturally. Dale has been allowed to get comfortable at the ranch before he has been pushed to open up about the true origin of his problems, and it makes it even more poignant and heart-wrenching when he does.

Flynn has been a driving force in Dale's recovery for the previous three books, but in this book he took a step back and allowed Paul to take the lead. Not only was this important for Dale, but I think it was majorly important in Paul's character development as well. Jasper also had a big part to play in this book, but it was Paul who really shone and who really guided Dale through one of the most harrowing stages of his recovery.

I liked the introduction of Mason, a new client, because I think he also had a part to play. Dale saw himself reflected in Mason and it allowed him to see things more clearly. Also, with Mason, we see the men of Falls Chance Ranch in their element once again, helping Mason with his problems in a calm, methodical manner. It was interesting to see how they handled a client who wasn't Dale, and who didn't slot into their lifestyle.

When I first started reading these books, I wasn't sure what to make of Dale's visions, and the spirituality of them. As the books have gone on, like Dale, I have found myself valuing them more and becoming more and more interested in them. It's a fascinating aspect of these books, and I really like that it's never explicitly stated what they are (Flynn and Jasper have differing views).

I also really enjoy that there is an over-arching mystery to each book (less so the first one). In this one, it is the mystery of the train robbery that took place in Three Traders, the robbery of the Silver Bullet. I love that each book builds upon the richly layered history of the area and it really helps everything feel much more real. The authors' passion for the story and the worldbuilding really shines through.

We also got to see more of the secondary characters Gerry, Ash, and Luath in this book, though secondary characters feels like the wrong term to describe them. It's like a big extended family, and you find yourself caring for each of them as you would the main five men in the relationship. We also got to see glimpses of Tom (and Jake) through emails, and I am aware that Silver Bullet Everest is a parallel story focusing on those two, so it will be interesting to see the events described vaguely via email through their eyes in that book.

There are a few minor formatting errors and errors where the wrong name is used, but it truly doesn't bother me. These are free online fiction and not professionally edited, so a few minor errors like these are to be expected. This book is still very readable and a great addition to the Falls Chance Ranch series.

These books have helped me get through a tough couple of months, and I'm really truly grateful for that. They are quickly becoming a firm favourite of mine, and I really love when novels and characters get under your skin in that way. I'm really looking forward to continuing my exploration of the Falls Chance Ranch world. :)

As the final main book so far to the Falls Chance Ranch series, this was a doozy. It was so good with working through problems. You really got to know what was behind all Dales actions and the way he thought. It explained so much.

This book also added another character. He was a client sent to be helped. This kinda let you see everything from Dale's perspective and the other side that you didn't get to see. It was refreshing.

My favorite part was surprisingly was when Dale was injured. I won't say how. It just started the story rolling in my eyes. That was the point I really saw Dale start working hard.

I still love the ranch, animals and characters. I always will. I don't think I will ever read a better series of books. I am just glad for the side stories and Jake and Tom's story. I am also crossing my fingers that us readers will regularly hear from Paul, Jas, Riley, Flynn, and Dale. I think even short stories are great and will read anything written.

WARNING: EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER READ AHEAD

I'm actually torn as to how to rate this thing since it's clearly not over & Yee Gods...it is LO-ONG! like pack a sack lunch lo-ong. AND I had to hunt down the rest of the chapters up til 23a which says to me there's at least gonna be a 23b. Right? It's the Jack & the beanstalk equivalent of books! At any rate, I did enjoy it for the most part...and thus far-who knows when it will conclude.

This installment follows Dale's emotional upheaval of his childhood neglect/trauma & I must warn you it's a grind to read some of this simply because it's so emotional & heartbreaking & awful. But, I'm an emotional masochist so I enjoyed that part along with the psychology of attachment disorders. What I found (and this is likely due to the extended nature of Rolf's writing of this book) that when read in one go there's quite a bit of repetition & it doesn't seem to have a clear destination. It's kind of all over the place or in psychospeak it has ADD. If you ever wanted intricate & explicit details on reaching the summit of Mt. Everest, look no further. The mysticism from Mustang Hill gets ratcheted up & the familiar extended family members contribute quite a bit: Luath, Gerry & Ash as well as a running commentary/email dialogue involving Tom & secondarily Jake. Mason, the newest client & by extension member of the family, plays a role in Dale's journey as well. I'm hoping at some point it will all come together in a concise manner that will make sense but I'm not sure how exactly. All & all, I've enjoyed it more than anything else thus far.

Wow! What a fantastic series. The writing is creative, insightful and a pleasure to read. The characters are adorable, three dimensional and I will miss them now I've finished, in fact I know nothing I read next will compare. A big thank you to Con Riley (another author and prolific reader for recommending and sending me these free downloads).
By this stage in the series Dale is a prominent member of the "family". His gift comes into it's own with Jasper's guidance, and the guidance of other Native Americans from the tribe originally from the land surrounding the ranch.
Still no sex and that's just as it should be in a story of spiritual awakening, the sex is there it's hinted at, it begins but kindly the reader is not subjected to the graphic details.. A deeply spiritual novel. A most definite five star read.

This book is absolutely breathtaking. I love every piece of thought written for it.
It is hands down the best series I have ever read and I know without a shadow of a doubt I'll be rereading this over and over.
This book is so clever it teaches you things you're probably unaware of, just like it teaches Dale.
I love reading of his struggle, his tenacity and his absolute adoration of everyone at the ranch. This fourth book was the hardest one for Dale to endure because he had to be so brave to let it all out. But it was all worth it, because reading of his rediscovery of self worth was beautiful.

This series deserved so much more, but it has all my love of why reading is pure indulgence.

I hope the author does not intend to let his novel with only six chapters, because it seems to be just the beginning of a longer story. We do not know at all what happens eventually with the new client. I would have liked more interaction between him and Dale. I would also have liked to see more about how Jasper manages its clients.
Anyway, these six chapters are interesting though. I loved all the series.
And no, the almost total absence of sex does not disturbed me at all. It is the interaction between the characters that is most important in the series.

I've been living on Falls Chance Ranch for over a week and I'm dying to keep reading. Dale has come such a long way and I love him. I need to know what happens to Mason. It took me a while, but I ended up really liking him. And Gerry just killed me in this one. He's so over the top and crude, and his joke about his butt getting all the instructions made me bust out laughing! What a roller coaster ride!

Love this book series! Finally a book about Domestic Dominance. It is amazing how much feeling and personality you can pack into a m/m storyline once you leave out the sex. And while I am a sucker for good sex scenes *hehe*, I was deeply touched especially by this 4th part where things come together. Also love that apart from ranch life we get to know Tom&Jake better.

Part 4, however, feels unfinished. Thus only 3,5 start. I really hope the authors will continue the story :-)
