David Mitchell has written an excellent and humorous book about the historical and present Town Criers of Britain and the world. David has researched historical Criers in the British Isles and Europe, tracing their history from Roman times, through plagues and wars, and the various roles Town Criers have played. Night watch-man, fire-extinguisher, finder of lost children and animals, the Town Crier read news for the illiterate masses, from Kings, nobles, parliamentarians and priests, to crying the wares at markets. Across the world, we Town Criers continue to serve our communities in any way we can, loudly and flamboyantly. This book complements Mike Willet's books on Town Criers of the present, "I Want to be a Town Crier" and "Oyez!", and Anne Doggett's "A Far Cry" about Australian Criers.
