I actually really enjoyed the story, but the book was heavily let down by its proof-reader. There were too many mistakes which made the book feel unprofessional.

I really enjoyed this story. The only reason that it hasn't gotten 5 stars is due to some small editing errors throughout the book. At certain points, the wrong name was used by accident, and it took me out of the story briefly while trying to figure out what was happening.
The story follows inspector Ryan and Sergeant Kane, investigating what initially was a house break in, resulting in the home owner being admitted to the hospital in a coma.
What should have been a straightforward investigation, ended up being a wild goose chase, sending Ryan and Kane in several different directions!
This book touches on many different topics, including garda corruption, dv, infidelity, the list goes on! Considering so many different topics are explored, the story remained easy to follow (despite some minor errors) and interesting!

2.5 ⭐️
Possibly the least thrilling thriller I’ve read. I felt it was very predictable and I guessed the twist pretty early on. I didn’t really find any of the characters to be particularly likeable and there were just too many characters all together, there were too many names to keep track of and it felt like all the new suspects were pointless additions. There were also glaring continuity errors throughout which really put me off! There was also a really random sub-plot about police corruption which felt out of place and I didn’t really see the need as it didn’t add to the main case in the book.

Thought this was going to be a good easy book but found it quite difficult to get in to and follow. There were so many characters introduced at the start, I had to keep going back to know who is who. Also at the end two things happened on the last chapter which could lead to a sequel but doesn’t so don’t feel why the author felt the need to add to. Think I’d read another book by Arlene Hunt to see if it was just this book as it could have been good.

I really liked this! The investigation was interesting to follow, though it got a bit confusing at times with so many characters and a few small errors. Despite that, it remained engaging and interesting. I had a feeling about who assaulted Jody early on, and I was right!
It was also nice to see the work relationship between Nola and Eliot develop throughout the story.

2.5 stars. A bit confusing regarding who is who and the ending not great. Pretty average as far as thrillers go.

Meh.

I don’t want to give a too negative review.

I feel the plot was good. The police officers were good solid characters but the spelling mistakes and missing words were just too much for me to deal with.

I did enjoy this book, but the storyline wasn’t that great and I feel like the story dragged it could’ve ended in the first 250 pages even though the last 100 pages were way better than the whole book put together

While She Sleeps by Arlene Hunt was published August 4th with Hachette Ireland and has been described wonderfully by Liz Nugent as 'page-turning grit lit'.

Detective Inspector Elliot Ryan is back on duty following an incident that left him with debilitating injuries. His daughter has moved in with him to help him back on his feet but is frustrated by her father's insistence that everything is ok. Clearly not sufficiently recovered to be back working, he refuses to take any more time out as he has a score he needs to settle.

Sergeant Nola Kane returns from suspended leave aggrieved and frustrated. Temporarily removed from Homicide she is put into Ryan's division, which covers theft and burglary. Kane is angry. She feels betrayed by an ex-colleague and is sick of her life. She is also very much aware of the fact that she is twenty-six and still living at home with her mother. Ryan is pedantic and Kane is more informal. She feels suffocated by Ryan's work methods, a man unkindly nicknamed 'the fossil' by other members of the squad.

When Jody Kavanagh is found by her ex-husband, early one morning, in a pool of blood, Ryan and Kane are sent to investigate. With life-threatening injuries she is taken to hospital and put in an induced coma. Nothing has been stolen and the husband denies all culpability. The only obvious thing missing is Jody's mobile phone. There are cameras dotted around her house and, with the added security of a protective and well-trained dog, Ryan and Kane are left wondering who really is Jody Kavanagh.

Jody Kavanagh is a designer with a reputation that is well recognised. She socialises among the higher echelons of society and grew up part of a wealthy Irish family. All fingers point to her ex-husband as Ryan and Kane start to question her associates but Ryan is slow to jump to conclusions. There is something fishy about this case. There clearly is more to Jody Kavanagh than meets the eye and Ryan, with Kane, soon realise that there is something much darker at play here.

Ryan and Kane are both on shaky ground. Their personalities are polar opposite and, at the beginning, neither really understands the other. But as time passes, their bond develops and, with a little trust, they begin to work a little better together, unpicking the lies and the secrets of this complex case.

Ryan has a personal axe to grind with someone and, in his own time, is gathering information to finally put to bed some outstanding business. We get a general insight into his history and why he is the man he is today and I am hoping (Please Arlene Hunt!) that we have not seen the last of Detective Inspector Elliot Ryan. I would love to read a prequel to While She Sleeps, delving further into his early days in the force. He is a fascinating, yet troubled, individual.

Sergeant Nola Kane is brilliantly cast as a no-nonsense, say it like it is, impetuous character. She is the perfect balance to Ryan's stilted and formal personality, together making a great team. They really have a brilliant dynamic that just works so I hope we see them together again in the not so distant future

While She Sleeps is a highly enjoyable tale with plenty of red-herrings that will leave you stumped on more than one occasion. A well-paced plot with a very authentic cast of characters While She Sleeps is a right cracker of a read and one I am very happy to recommend!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Hachette Books Ireland for a review copy of While She Sleeps, a police procedural set in Dublin.

Inspector Elliot Ryan and Sergeant Nola Kane start their first day of working together with an attack. Jody Kavanagh has been brutally beaten and left for dead in her own home. While Jody lies in a coma they try to piece together her life and relationships and sort out their own issues.

I enjoyed While She Sleeps, which is an absorbing read with some unexpected twists and turns. It is told from Ryan and Kane’s points of view, so the reader knows what they know and can speculate alongside them. Personally, I never guessed any of it and got surprised by every twist.

There two plot lines in the novel, Jody’s attack and Ryan’s secret investigation into an old cold case. I wasn’t overly impressed by Ryan’s secret investigation as it was bitty and didn’t reveal much, but Jody’s attack was very interesting. She maybe wasn’t the woman people thought she was and she had plenty of secrets. I like the way her life gradually unfolds as the novel progresses and the way the reveals offer new possibilities and food for thought. It keeps the reader involved and turning the pages, encouraged by the fact that only Ryan thinks that her separated husband didn’t do it.

Ryan and Kane are like chalk and cheese. He is dosed up on painkillers after an accident, but still insists on decorum and doing things by the book. She is impetuous and irreverent with a potty mouth. Their interactions are amusing and initially less than cordial, but they eventually gel into an effective team. I would gladly spend more time with them.

While She Sleeps is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

When a woman is discovered in her home close to death, Elliot Ryan and Nola Kane are left stumped on who would want to hurt her. All fingers point to the ex, but with little evidence - everyone in Jody Kavanagh’s circle is a suspect. And that circle keeps getting bigger…

I am in two minds with While She Sleeps. On one hand it has a heinous crime, plenty of police politics and corruption that makes this the type of page turner I know and love. But on the other hand, there’s so many typos that make the book feel unprofessional. There’s also a very large cast that’s introduced very early on, with so many names being thrown about that the book very quickly seems clunky and uncomfortable.

In terms of plot - it’s okay. I wasn’t gripped from the beginning and didn’t find myself excited to read this before bed every night. However, once things started unfolding it was easier to pick While She Sleeps back up regularly.

The characters were very fleshed out, some almost too fleshed out considering their very small role in the plot. There was also an underlying subplot that was regularly mentioned throughout, almost teasing a second instalment, a start of a series perhaps - only for it to be swept under the rug and wrapped up nicely for the end of the novel.

Overall, While She Sleeps wasn’t a bad book at all. But it’s definitely not one I’ll be raving about. Subpar and slightly disappointing. 3.5 stars!

Jody Kavanagh seemed to have it all. Beautiful, rich, loved- so why was see found beaten & close to death on her kitchen floor? Why did she have a 'protection' dog & why was he outside? Why are there so many cameras? And is her ex- husband all he seems? Elliot Ryan & Nola Kane have to try & answer these questions.

Ryan is struggling through the pain resulting from a recent accident. He is also trying to solve a cold case. He is old school. He likes the old fashioned ways of doing things, he doesn't like slang or bad language. Nola is young impetuous & has served a suspension for attacking a fellow officer (her ex!)Her language leaves something to be desired & is pretty horrified at being paired with 'The Fossil'! However as the case goes on the unlikely partnership learns to respect & even like each other. This was an interesting police procedural with a good plot but the relationship between Ryan & Kane made it a great read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

I felt like the storyline was slightly rushed near the point where it was exposed as Fiona being the one who hit Jody but we never got to really see what happened to Fiona as in if she really got a sentence or any charges. Regarding the storyline I wish we got to know who the father was to Jody’s baby which we really didn’t.

I also wasn’t really a fan of how at the end there was an unexpected cliffhanger which really didn’t help at all -> as in the cliffhanger being that someones called Elliot giving him a death threat then Amber Feenans death which isn’t explained explicitly.

Although those were some drawbacks, overall the book is really intriguing and makes you want to flick through every page as fast as you can just to be able to understand the concept of who the “killer/attacker” could be.The book can be seen from different perspectives such as Jody’s.

If your into books that have cliffhangers at the end i recommend you read this book!!

A thoroughly enjoyable and well-plotted read, with the main plot and subplot intervening nicely. (Hunt makes this look easy. It's not. It's fiendishly hard!) Inspector Elliot Ryan and Sergeant Nola Kane are chalk and cheese - Nola is salt of the earth, while Elliot is older and a bit of a stiff poker. The case involves a well-connected designer who is badly injured in hospital and the question of who hated her enough to injure her so badly. From religious cults to Dubai businessmen and shared posh school, not to mention the bent cop sub plot, this story unspools perfectly and there is a good hand on the tiller from start to end. Recommended read.

(Note in this edition that names get mixed up a few times which threw me out a bit.)

This is a competent and well written police procedural set in Dublin.

I really liked Sergeant Nola Kane, the plucky and sharply funny young police officer stretching her wings and proving her worth under the supervision of the experienced older DI.

While She Sleeps is not exactly astonishingly original -- it includes many of the standard police procedural tropes -- but it's not a copy/paste formulaic delivery either. The characters - especially Nola - are well rounded and engaging. Dialogue is sharp and the pacing is good.

And like most police procedurals, the actual plot is not really what matters - we're in it for the investigators, the investigation process, the plot twists and final reveal. All skillfully handled here. I'll certainly be looking out for more in the series.

I'm giving this a 5 star review. Because honestly despite the couple of typing errors, it was a good well thought out book with interesting characters.
I love the work relationship that builds with Nola and Elliot through trust and dedication to the job.
Plenty of twists and turns. Background drama with some characters also which means something is always keeping me interested.
I dont rate books because of their droaning long paragraphs with fancy words. I rate them on the story/plot and how much it keeps me interested. This was an easy and interesting read.

I love books that hook you from the go. And While She Sleeps by Arlene Hunt is it. I was gripping from the first line because that's how well written it is.

The plot and sub plots make this an interesting read. Hunt builds the characters well and all the protagonists are fleshed out that makes this an interesting read. Definitely recommend for the writing style and storyline!

I think this is a great book with two investigators (inspector and sergeant) with such a dynamic that each of their personalities stand out. It’s got a really interesting story line but… there are just too many characters involved - it’s great but can be overwhelming!!!! Plus there are so many spelling errors that ruin the mood of this book however I can say the characters make me want to read on more about their story and their cases together!

I found this book to be incredibly confusing and I just could not follow what was happening and who was who. I felt the timeline was jumping around but there was no clear definition when there was a change which only added to confusion. Having said that, I did enjoy the ending and I thought it was very satisfactory.

I found this book heavy going. The main storyline could have been good but to be honest I think there were too many suspects. I also thought most of the characters were a bit two dimensional and were completely irrelevant. The cold case could have been really good but the outcome was overwhelming. This wasn't a bad book but I don't see me seeking out this author in the future.

This was a great story! Kept me thinking but I found too many characters were introduced in the beginning at once and I found it hard to keep track of who was who throughout reading.

Other than that, thoroughly enjoyed it! Although, I read a lot of mystery and crime thrillers, so on page 3, I predicted it was her sister!

I found this book quite confusing, lots of characters and it jumped around a lot, especially the last few chapters. There were lots of unanswered questions when the book had finished - the whole thing with the inspector, who got her pregnant?, and the fact Amber was dead in the final chapter - seems like a second book was intended.
The main story was good, I liked the idea of it.

A good storyline with an unexpected twist, this book had me turning the pages and hooked from the start. The one thing I will say however is that there are a lot of little mistake throughout, with names and grammar, that really should have been picked up on by the editor. It made it look unprofessional. Overall though this was a good read.
