Sacred Land, Sacred Sex; Rapture of the Deep: Concerning Deep Ecology and Celebrating Life

Rate this book

Sacred Land, Sacred Sex is the only complete manual on deep experiential ecology, written by the movement's first woman advocate. Sacred Land provides a radical historical perspective on the philosophical & economic roots of Western civilization's divorce from nature. Through cross-cultural anthropological research, Sacred Land then discusses humanity's original roots in relationship to ecosystems & animals, & in nature as the source of our spiritual & aesthetic consciousness. Finally, Sacred Land serves as a vital resource for dozens of traditional rituals that can help us to break our alienation from nature, & from each other, in order to move toward committed, fulfilling relationships. Sacred Land also provides:
* an appendix outlining ten "Skillful Strategies" for rediscovering our original humanity & effecting change at a local level
* a list of organizational resources
* detailed reference notes
* a selected bibliography
* an in-depth glossary
* a thoroughly cross-referenced index.

this book is so good, i gotta write a long review sometime but real quick, she is absolutely incredibly engaging writer (not fancy, not really poetic, but very conceptual and conversational at the same time) and should be recognized as a major figure both in deep ecology and bioregionalism.

I really appreciated the different perspective she has of living authentically. I was intrigued by the idea of seasonal husbands... :)

This was written in the late 80s, a time that I was very interested in deep ecology. It is great to read it now when, after many years of hopeful denial, I am coming back to a study of how we should be living in the face of nearly certain civilization collapse. From a time when my children were young to now when my grandchildren are the ages my children were then, looking with concern at the world they will have.

This has been the most important book i've ever read and it's changed me life, and led me to found Talking Gourds, a poetry event going on its 20th year, and to initiate talking gourd circles at many events -- headwaters, dreamtime, sparrows, and others.

phenomenal review of many systems and history. a great read - one of my favers of all time. Sounds loke a sexy title, but little about sexuality, more about interplay of systems
