Credits of Turkish-born American stage and film director Elia Kazan include A Streetcar Named Desire (1947) of Tennessee Williams and the movies On the Waterfront (1954) and East of Eden (1955).

This award-winning theatrical producer, screenwriter, and novelist co-founded of the influential actors studio in New York in 1947. Kazan won Academy Award thrice, Tony Award five times, and Golden Globes four times and received numerous awards and nominations in other prestigious festivals as the Cannes film festival and the Venice film festival.

Ό,τι φρικτό έχει συμβεί στην ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας έχει αποτελέσει ατέρμονη πηγή έμπνευσης για τη λογοτεχνία. Ο ελληνοτουρκικός πόλεμος και η Μικρασιατική καταστροφή συγκαταλέγονται σε αυτά τα φρικτά γεγονότα κι ο Ηλίας Καζάν καταφέρνει να μας μεταφέρει όλη την ατμόσφαιρα αλλά και τη φρίκη της εποχής μέσα από ένα έξυπνο ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα. Ίσως ο Σταύρος ή κάποιος σαν αυτόν, να υπήρχε και στη πραγματικότητα γιατί στον Βύρωνα, μια προσφυγική συνοικία, ιδρύθηκε ενα ταπητουργείο το 1923 και υπάρχει ακόμα. Έχω περάσει άπειρες φορές από εκεί και απλά το αγνοούσα. Δεν ειχα κοιτάξει ποτέ την ταμπέλα. Τώρα ξέρω. Τώρα μπορώ και φαντάζομαι την πιθανή ιστορία πίσω από αυτό το κτήριο. Και σκέφτομαι πως αν όλοι άνθρωποι ξέρανε λίγη ιστορία, αν ξεράνε πως όλοι είμαστε το ίδιο απάνθρωποι στον πόλεμο, αν ξέρανε πως είναι να χάνεις τα πάντα, να είσαι κυνηγημένος, να σε θεωρούν παντού ανεπιθύμητο, να φλερτάρεις με το θάνατο τη κάθε στιγμή. Αν ο κόσμος προσπαθούσε να τα καταλάβει όλα αυτά, γιατι αν δεν τα ζήσεις ποτέ δεν θα τα καταλάβεις, ίσως να μην υπήρχαν τόσοι κυνηγημένοι άνθρωποι σε αυτόν τον κόσμο. Αλλά αυτός ο κόσμος δεν θα αλλάξει ποτέ. Θα συνεχίσει να μυρίζει καμμένη σάρκα. Θα συνεχίσει να εχει ξεριζωμένες ψυχές.

For some reason I feel disappointed in this one. It didn't move me, the plot or the writing, in the way his other books have. I feel like the third act was changed and changed again before he finally decided which way to go with it. A good piece of historical fiction, but from Kazan, I expected more.

Το μυθιστόρημα διαδραματίζεται το 1919, αμέσως μετά το τέλος του Α' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου και κατά την έναρξη της Μικρασιατικής Εκστρατείας. Ο πρωταγωνιστής, Σταύρος Τοπούζογλου, ένας επιτυχημένος πλέον έμπορος χαλιών στη Νέα Υόρκη, αποφασίζει να επιστρέψει στην πατρίδα του, την Ανατολία. Έχοντας απογοητευτεί από την απληστία και την επιφανειακή "αμερικανική ζωή", καθώς και από την ερωτική του σχέση με μια κομψή Αμερικανίδα που του θύμιζε την κενότητα του αμερικανικού ονείρου, ο Σταύρος επιθυμεί να ανακτήσει τις ρίζες του και να ζήσει τη ζωή που είχε ο πατέρας του.

Η γραφή είναι συχνά άμεση, με ρεαλιστικές περιγραφές της βίας και της φτώχειας αν και κάποιες φορές μοιάζει με "σεναριακή" ή "αποσπασματική" αφήγηση .
Σύσταση:Η ατμόσφαιρα του βιβλίου με απορρόφησε απόλυτα.

Masterful, dramatic tale of the Greco/Turkish War in the early 20th century. The reason I found this so compelling is the larger story of the war is told through the life of Starvos, who is ethnic Greek and lives through the war and it consequences. Although this is a war story it is character driven and so is intimate while at the same time giving a grand sweep of history. Published in 1996 should the names of the places be changed to more modern middle eastern conflict zone could have been a story about today.Also the war between a Muslim and Christian country has resonance for today. During WW1 the allies changed their ships to be oil powered and so Turkey was the road to middle eastern oit. I want to read The Anatolian which is the story of young Starvos.

Good story by the seminal Kazan about a hapless Greek struggling to be something while the Greek-Turkish war plays out around 1920. Older but contemporary relevance.
