Summer Storm

Rate this book
The day begins innocently enough: Annie and her friends are enjoying a leisurely afternoon of sunbathing when an ominous storm approaches. In the scramble to leave, Annie realizes her cousin Gina is missing. After a fruitless search in the rain, the teens call the police. And as the hours tick by, Annie’s fear for Gina’s safety mounts. How could this have happened? Wasn’t anyone watching her? Didn’t anyone see? The possibilities are too horrific to consider, and Annie turns for support to the friends who were with her and Gina on that fateful afternoon. But as the days pass without a trace of the lost girl, accusations begin to fly between friends, and disturbing information about one of their own comes to light. At first Annie refuses to believe it. But as the evidence begins to mount and the accused does nothing to clarify the situation, Annie realizes the relationships she once held dear are not at all what they seemed. And if a girl can’t trust her best friends…who can she trust?

Schade.

SUMMER STORM was just . . . bad. With translations you can get into a situation where the translation is lackluster and takes away from the beauty of the writing in its original language. But this . . . there’s no way a translator did this. At least alone.

This reads like it was written by someone who doesn’t know how human beings interact. The friendship of the four people in this book is gawky and awkward at best and in turn their interaction with their parents is something out of a poorly conceived and painful to watch sitcom. The driving force behind everything that happens in this book is contrived at best, providing a clunky way to reveal some past family secret. In the middle of it all you get an admission from one of the friends about her being sexually assaulted by someone, which the MC doesn’t really believe and brushes off. Real sympathetic characters here. But it’s presented as such an off-handed aside in the middle of a missing person’s investigation that you feel slapped by it. It’s just wedged so roughly into the middle of this otherwise really short book.

I’m reading off of an ARC but holy crap, this reads like a draft written by someone in middle school. According to the author bio at the back of the book both the author and the translator are award-winning. How? I’ve seen more realistic representations of people and more plausible dialogue watching children play with dolls, some of them being dinosaur toys. Possibly a Transformer involved and a Barbie with a shaved head.

I mean . . . this is just awful. I very rarely say that about books. Usually there’s something redeeming about them. But SUMMER STORM? Not a thing. And the set-up is completely strange. The intro and epilogue are done from the POV of one character, the character who goes missing, and the entire rest of the story is told from the POV of a complete different character. No explanation, no reasoning as to how that missing character knew all of this happened or why she’s bookending the story to begin with. It just is and it’s completely jarring.

There’s nothing to like about anything. The plot is ridiculous, poorly constructed and executed, and the characters aren’t even caricatures. They’re stick figures pretending to be robots with no personalities. It’s a super short book but ultimately a waste of time. I’d love to know what the acquiring editor was thinking when they accepted this one. The thing’s rougher than a rough first draft. I don’t know whether this is all the author, all the translator, or a perfect shit storm of the two but holy book reading, is this bad. I’m embarrassed for Amazon on this one. Ick.

A group of friends and a newcomer - 16-year olds - head to the quarry lake for an afternoon of swimming, only Gina, the newcomer didn't go into the water. She headed into the woods without returning. Friends are accusing each other and others, spilling secrets, bringing on tears and rejection, hurts and anger, fear and frustration.

We think we know someone, especially those that have been in our lives for years. It's all too easy to believe something about someone because what we hear sounds plausible. Could happen. And then the story changes. So what does one believe? What can one believe?

Hot tempers, hot summer, and a storm conspire to create an atmospheric drama of a hidden past that rolls over a small suburban community. This is a very fast-paced and short book about 4 friends and the breakdown of trust and belief between them when a girl goes missing.

Annie brings her cousin Gina to the sand quarry where Annie and her three friends, Steffi, Roger, and Jonas have been swimming before. Gina refuses to swim with the others, and when a storm quickly blows up, the kids hurriedly pack up only to realize that Gina never returned from her walk and doesn't know the area.
There are a lot of awkward moments in the book - we are dealing with teenagers after all. Drama blow up over little things and major reveals are brushed off. It felt like 9th grade all over again.

This book was originally written in German and translated. The translation is a little clunky in areas and there are some cultural behaviors that need a little grace. The horror is implied and not shown and the ending resolves appropriately. No HEA after ripping each other's hearts out and stomping on them.

Story of girl goes missing plus family secrets. The idea is appealing, unfortunately the result is lackluster.
It would have been interesting to see the contrast between the teens’ coping mechanisms with the disappearance and the adult’s, but the writer is not very good at portraying human behavior. The characters have very weird reactions that are extremely difficult to empathize with. The relationships between them are equally odd. Apart from that, a major subplot is left hanging and the ending comes across as lazy.
All in all, not a particularly good book, but easy and quick to read.

I read this as part of a reading challenge - had to find an author who shared the same initials as I have. Someone suggested this book as it was also a short read and therefore I thought I'd give it a go. I've not read such a badly translated book as this before. Coupled with the authors writing style it was just really hard reading. The underlying story wasn't that gripping and felt quite disorganised at times.

Trust in the clover leaf

Good writer To many twist and turns. Teenage saga of friendships gone wrong. Didn't quiet understand the drowning of Gina's mother.

Was will mir das Buch jetzt sagen?

To avoid any spoilers, let me just say that Dunker uses a prologue to set up the reader in an interesting way. When I got to the epilogue I found myself flipping back to the prologue to check out some things. In one you have a girl using unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with her pain and in the other you see a girl considering healthier coping mechanisms to deal with her feelings. In between is the story of teens making their way through the often painful transition from childhood to adulthood. The major issues explored include sex, abusive behavior, trust, loyalty, communication, and the pitfalls of making assumptions.

Overall, I enjoyed Summer Storm and if I owned a bookstore I'd stock it. I sometimes have a hard time getting into young adult novels because they can be so 'anxsty,' particularly around issues of sexuality and gender roles. But that's the nature of being a teen. It took me about 20 pages to relax into this book, but after that I was sucked in. If there's a teen in your life who wants a "realistic" novel, this one might appeal to her or him. At only 139 pages long, there's not a lot of character development, but the shortness might be appealing to a teen who wants to read something, but doesn't want to commit to a huge tome. There's also no gratuitous sex or violence, although one girl does tell her friend about kind of almost doing it one time with a boy she loves.

The translation seemed pretty smooth. There was one odd moment when hair gel is referred to as "setting lotion," and I don't think most American teens use the word disco anymore, but other than that the writing moved along without any awkwardness.

Acquired through First Reads
(My review is later than I would have hoped, because the book arrived nearly 2 months ago, but my apartment office neglected to tell me it was there! Even after I picked up a different package they forgot to give it to me. Grrrrr.......)

Well, hmm...

This was a strange book. The first 20-30 pages were written pretty poorly. The sentences were choppy and the paragraphs didn't flow quite right. This could very well be because the novel was originally in German and translated. The continuity and writing style could have been "lost in translation" as they say. I'm not sure if the writing did improve or I just got used to it in my haste to finish this book. Honestly, I probably would have abandoned it fairly early on, but I felt I owed it to goodreads to finish the book I got for free. Unfortunately, the book just wasn't for me. Like I said, the first 20 pages or so were painful to get through.

Anyway, I am very grateful to goodreads for selecting me as a winner! Even though I didn't like this book, I appreciated the experience and I'm happy to share my opinion. =)

This is another Amazon freebie that I need to review for them. First, let me say, this book is only 139 pages. This book was disappointing and a real struggle to finish. It starts out really slow. Once you get past the first half of the book and the pace picks up, then it is a bunch of friends turning on one another while caught in a web of lies only to find out it was the parents all along that had been keeping secrets and telling lies. Then, at the end there was a nice little BBQ to help everyone make up and be friends. I found it to be a frustrating and disturbing book. I also have to admit that I am a conservative mom and maybe some parents are okay with the adult topics being thrown at their kids like molestation and sex among young teens, but this just didn't work for me. I definitely wouldn't want my young teenager to read this book. There are so many better books out there. Skip this one!

Finished this book in one sitting (5 hours?) - mainly because I was confused and then figured by half way through I should just finish it off.

First - the translation is bad in some parts. And I think that in part causes the prologue and epilogue to be confusing.

The overall idea is a coming of age novel but it is written more like a short story so lacks the depth needed to be good. The book also tries to include too many plot devices - very dramatic suspicions about Gina's disappearance, the structure changes of a friend group as life and love progress, and hidden family secrets. If the book really just focused on the transformation of the "four leaf clover" friend group and was more straight forward about Gina's character I think it would have been better. Or make it an actual mystery / thriller (which it is actually not even though it pretends to be).

Annie's cousin comes for a visit and disappears while they are swimming in a lake in an abandoned quarry. As they frantically search for her, accusations are flung at varies suspects, lies are revealed, skeletons are let out of peoples closets. Was Gina alive? If she was abducted, who took her? Could she have run away from the quarry, with no money or clothes and no transportation? And did her disappearance have anything to do with the drowning in the quarry that took place years earlier? This book kept me wondering until the very end. I do have to say that it started out somewhat slow and rambling but once it got rolling, I couldn't put it down.

I am not sure why I am coming across alot of books which seem to be young adult literature marketed as adult literature, but this was one of them. I found myself primarily bored with this book. I expected a bit of some twistedness coming from it being a European mystery and I simply found blandness and then it wrapped up with a pretty cheesy ending. I was really, really disappointed and it was not, AT ALL, what I expected.

This is a book for teens. While it was an okay read, I was not most impressed with the conclusion of the book. Basically about a girl who runs away, making it seem as though something more drastic happened. While she is missing, 3 close friends are quick to blame each other and forever is changed in the end. While the girl is missing, this brings up a family secret and before she comes home, she demands the truth. Like I said, overall, ok read

Four friends are going to the lake on a hot summer afternoon. They take newly arrived cousin, Gina, with them. When Gina disappears within hours of their arrival, accusations and dark secrets fly left and right.
Originally written in German, translated into English. Something seems to be lost in the translation. While the story is complete, there are parts that seem stilted and slightly off-kilter.

Young adult mystery ... overall pretty good read. The prologue gave me a different impression of what was going to happen so I was surprised at the end ... I don't want to spoil the book for you, so I will leave it at that. Additionally, this book is not set in the United States, which adds to the interest level of the book.

I did not finish listening to this book because I didn't like the reader. I thought she was overly dramatic and strident. THe premise was interesting and I may get the book and finish the story at a later date, because I do wonder what happened to the missing girl.
