Rate this book
This beautifully printed paperback original collects Ansel Adams' finest images of the place closest to his heart, Yosemite National Park. "I knew my destiny when I first experienced Yosemite", wrote Adams, who first visited the park at the age of fourteen and returned every year of his life thereafter. This new book presents the essence of Adams' long association with Yosemite: sixty-six memorable photographs of glacial lakes and craggy peaks, cascading waterfalls and granite monoliths, lone trees and sylvan streams. Here are Moon and Half Dome, Clearing Winter Storm, and El Capitan, Winter, Sunrise - images that have become veritable icons of the American wilderness. Selections from Adams' writings about the park and its environment, and an introductory essay that reveals the prescience of Adams' views on park management issues, enhance this majestic photographic portrait of Yosemite National Park by America's foremost landscape photographer.

People note black-and-white photographs of the American wilderness of American photographer Ansel Easton Adams.

Though wilderness and the environment were his grand passions, photography was his calling, his metier, his raison d'etre.

"God is in the details."

This quote, which I remember from watching a video on Ansel Adams on YouTube, really resonates with me. It was originally said by the American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. There's no doubt that this quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of Adams' work for me. As one of my most inspirational photographers, his stunning imagery, showcased in the book "Yosemite Valley," captures the beauty of this remarkable place through his lens.

The book features breathtaking photographs of Yosemite Valley, although I'm certain the actual prints surpass the reproduced versions. I aspire to one day experience his photographic works firsthand. Beyond a mere collection of photographs, this book delves into the specifics of Adams' craft, offering insights into the techniques he employed, including discussions on Optical Problems, Light and Color, and Exposure Recommendations. These details are invaluable for me as someone passionate about photography, providing a deeper understanding of the intricacies of capturing a compelling image. Also, how can I forget about "The Zone System" in photography, a technique attributed to Ansel Adams.

Accompanying many of the photographs are eloquent descriptions, such as the evocative line: "Morning - at any time of year - is the time of magic in the mountains."

Ansel Adams took his first Yosemite photographs with a Brownie his father had given him. He soon started using another and another camera. Apparently he did not have a favorite one overall but favored a variety depending on the photographic result he sought.

I selected this book for several reasons.
* For participation in GR Catching Up on the Classics group Bingo square: A Classic involving Art.
* To please my father who I shared this library book with. He took us traveling throughout American Southwest, never making it to Yosemite. It was on his bucket list.
* To see photographs that Anselel Adams used to show the majesty and beauty of Yosemite.

When I saw the images of the photographs in this book, I sighed. How I would so love to see these photographs in person. At the local art museum, I have seen black and white photographs made with a red filter. The light shines on the surface of the photograph that changes the photograph from being a good photo to a beautiful photo. And these photographs were nothing near Ansel Adams' quality photographs. I can only try to imagine how stunning these photographs would be hanging in a picture gallery.

Back to the book. After the photographs is "Selected Writings by Angel Adams". Here can be seen arguments Ansel Adams used to try to convince park administrators, federal legislators, and other people of influence to better protect Yosemite National Park. These writings and the photographs work together to show something of Ansel Adams' love of Yosemite.

It's Ansel Adams! I was shocked to realize he lived until 1984!! Like much of history, we think of the black and white past as ancient history, when in fact, it is existing just outside our own lived experience. But he was there at this perfect pocket in time when the natural world was being transformed into an extension of the machine we now live within. He was there to document it, not just with his photos, but with his words, of which there are extracts from his larger writings included here in this book. What would Adams say about the state of the National Parks today? I'm not sure that even he would be able to find the words.

The pictures are breath taking! However, the short writings of Ansel Adams made me dislike the man.
He appears to want the park for the future of mankind but they should have very little access to his park.

The essence of Adams' long association with Yosemite is herein preserved--
66 photos of lakes, peaks, waterfalls, streams, and of course the magnificent granite monoliths.

Among those icons of the American wilderness are Moon and Half Dome, as well as El Capitan, Winter, Sunrise. I tried to duplicate those photographic efforts on my recent trip to Yosemite--I was not quite up to Ansel's high standards!

Selections from Adams' writings about Yosemite enhance the photos of the book.

Highly recommended for students of landscape photography or lovers of the great outdoors!

Another amazing Ansel Adams collection! I enjoyed reading more about his history with Yosemite, including how he started taking photographs there at age 14 with Kodak Box Brownie that he got from his parents.
