Vitsit, olisipa minun lapsuudessani ollut tämmöisiä dinokirjoja, niin ehkä olisin sittenkin ryhtynyt toteuttamaan unelmaani ja opiskellut paleontologiksi!

Nick Crumptonin "Kaikki mitä olet tiennyt dinosauruksista on pötyä!"

Itse asiassa peräti puolet kaikista tunnetuista dinosauruksista on löydetty kymmenen viime vuoden aikana!

Gavin Scottin oivallinen kuvitus on ilmeikästä ja mukavaa katsella.

"Kaikki mitä olet tiennyt dinosauruksista on pötyä!" sopii mainiosti alakoululaisten vinkkaukseen.

Leuk informatief jeugdboek over Dino's. Gaat al best ver qua wetenschappelijke termen, dus voor wat oudere kinderen.
Al vind die van mij van 4 het ook al reuze interessant.

In this large format nonfiction book for middle grade readers, zoologist Crumpton debunks a lot of misinformation that is widely held about dinosaurs. Why are there so many outdated ideas about dinosaurs? Theories change over time as new discoveries and information comes to light, but since grown-ups are old, they often repeat a lot of "old" facts. Thanks, Dr. Crumpton!

There are lots of different areas where thoughts have changed. There is information about when dinosaurs lived, which was not all at the same time. There is a spread about "dinosaurs" that still exist, some debunking of the thought that all dinosaurs were mean, and even a primer on how to pronounce the long and unwieldy names! If your only books on dinosaurs are Roy Chapman Andrews, in his 1959 In the Days of the Dinosaurs, or the 1960 How and Why Wonder Book of Dinosaurs that most of my friends used to have, and you're not sure about whether or not we can use the term "Brontosaurus" (it came back in 2015), you definitely want to pick this up.

The illustrations are great, and there are even some older style illustrations to back up the fact that "We've always known what dinosaurs looked like". There are a lot of charts, graphs, timelines, and side bars of facts that make this an excellent nonfiction choice for learning to navigate the genre. of course, dinosaur enthusiasts are usually well versed in how to read books about their favorite topic.

I especially appreciated the gallery of pictures of female paleontologists, but I would have liked it even more if the women's dates had been included. There is a nice glossary and index as well.

Some of the newer books about dinosaurs include Sandra Laboucarie The Ultimate Book of Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Creatures, National Geographic Kids' The Dinosaur Atlas, and Drimmer and Brusatte's How to Survive in the Age of Dinosaurs. Young fans will want to read those books first, and then use Crumpton's book to fact check and make sure they are accurate!

Dinosaurs were mean. [Wrong!]

Dinosaurs were not very smart. [Wrong again.]

Dinosaurs are extinct. [Also wrong.]

What is true about dinosaurs?

=========

Since the first discovery of fossilized bones, dinosaurs have held the interest of scientists, researchers, paleontologists, and children. Recent discoveries and new research data, much gained in the last ten years, have disproven some of those early assumptions and these facts form the basis for twenty-eight statements that young readers may have heard about dinosaurs, but have, through discoveries and research, been proven to be false.

Each full-color, double-page spread presents a statement declared to be ”wrong” and then provides correct information and data related to that dinosaur fact. Using both illustrations and descriptions, the author highlights several dinosaurs that have helped disprove this “wrong” fact. Many of the dinosaurs discussed and shown in the pages of this book are likely to be ones readers have not heard about prior to reading this book.

Young readers, ages eight through twelve, are the target audience for this book; however, all dinosaur aficionados are sure to find something new and exciting in the pages of this oversized hardcover book. This fascinating book should be part of every dinosaur lover’s library.

Highly recommended.

I received a free copy of this book through the LibraryThing Early Readers program; I am leaving this review voluntarily.

There you have it: get ready to “un-learn” everything you knew about dinosaurs with this fun, illustrated book by Nosy Crow.

By mapping out facts in a provocative fashion (with chapter headings like “Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth…Wrong!), our young reader is drawn into the scale of the Mesozoic era, and the very little we have unearthed of it.

“Trying to figure out the Mesozoic era is like trying to understand a story from just a few torn out pages.”

But there are also many unusual finds in this book, such as the fact that the chances of a bone becoming a fossil is…one in a billion 😨

Did you know there’s a dinosaur that’s been named Thanos after the Marvel villain? Or that the largest dinosaur ever discovered is not the T-Rex but the Spinosaurus — 3 metres longer than the tyrannosaurus at 15 metres, and more than twice the size of an orca.

Written by zoologist/researcher Nick Crumpton and illustrated by Gavin Scott, this book (fourth in a series that have so far featured minibeasts, sharks and the human body), this book debunks common myths about these pre-historic creatures with “jaw dropping” new research.

As is the case for many individuals, I love reading about dinosaurs, which is one of the reasons I chose this book. But I also enjoy having my assumptions or what I think are facts about dinosaurs or even other topics challenged. This informative, well-written book does just that. On the left-hand page of the book the author presents certain bits of common knowledge about dinosaurs; for instance, that they are extinct or aren't very smart or that they can come back to life. These "facts" may have been gleaned from texts or popular culture such as movies. But then, on the remained of that page and on the right-hand page, he provides a counterpoint to that previous belief, refuting what many readers think they know with the truth. Alongside attractive illustrations of dinosaurs, including labels identifying them, the text is eye-opening, and this approach sound and appealing. This one will surely be a hit with youngsters in elementary and middle grades. And even a dinosaur lover like me learned something from reading it.

Tyrannosaurus Rex could outrun you ❌️ Dinosaurs could roar❌️ Dinosaurs snapped their jaws like crocodiles ❌️ T-rex was the biggest predator ❌️ I learned these weren't true in Everything You Know About Dinosaurs Is Wrong 😅

As paleontologists discover new dinosaur fossils, some facts we had learnt about dinosaurs have been proven wrong. This book debunks common myths and introduces fascinating and fun info about prehistoric creatures, alongside beautiful illustrations 🦕

I particularly like the the one about dinosaur names and how they are made up of smaller words from languages, along with how to pronounce them. And it's not only about dinosaurs - it is interesting to know that paleontologists don't only spend their days digging, and that some of the greatest paleontologists working today are women 😉

If your child loves dinosaurs, this is one for them - I reckon those age 9 and older can attempt it on their own. Thank you, Definitely Books Kids (Pansing), for sending this to me for review!

Suitably engaging and really quite detailed, this look at palaeontology shows a lot of previous dinosaur books to have been wrong. So if you're still peddling the idea they were cold-blooded, scaly, green things roaring at each other, this is the perfect corrective. Every double-page spread is related to a specific issue – their colours, their sound, our misconceptions in previous decades – and unpacks it with a lot of writing and captions. The pages then can look really quite busy, but the value of the book is certainly heightened by the comprehensive approach, and the designs in the artwork really are strong and enjoyable. Not all the themes are exactly as suited as they should be – all dinosaurs having long, complex names is not really the stereotype about them most in need of being busted, surely?! - but the breadth of species and the broad scope of the work proves this should be towards the top of the list for school library purchase. Four and a half stars.

I have had my eye on this book for so long and I am happy to report it is indeed amazing!

This book clears up some of the common misconceptions that are believed. While my knowledge of dinosaurs has grown since having my son, I will still admit that I have a lot to learn. Books like this one makes the learning process a wonderful bonding experience for my kids and I.

Did you know that the smallest dinosaur footprints that were ever found were barely 1 centimeter long? I sure didn’t and now I am so excited to read these interesting facts with my kids. I’m wondering how I will be able to wait until Christmas.

This book is definitely geared towards slightly older children. My son is six and even though he wont be able to read this book entirely on his own, I know this will be a great motivator in his reading development.

Each two pages spread in this book is dedicated to correcting mis-information about dinosaurs, such as: dinosaurs are mean or dinosaurs could roar, etc. Full color pictures in a water color/color pencil palette and style clearly illustrate what the text is saying. Author does use some humor throughout.
Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate where the "WRONG" text ends and the "true/correct" text begins.
Back matter includes: glossary and index. There is also a spread dedicated to female paleontologists. It's very diverse and some of the quotes under the pictures are very funny but it would be nice to have their dates included
Dino enthusiasts will enjoy this book.

A fun book with tons of facts about dinosaurs. As most kids already know, grown-ups have it all wrong! So many things we're taught or thought we knew have been overturned and this is particularly true about dinosaurs. Lots of colourful illustrations really bring to life the different types of dinos, many of which I had never come across of before.
