The beginning of this book concerns me. It jumps right in to they author’s desire to do something for God and her growing reliance on Him through incredible trials. That part is really heartbreaking. I can’t imagine the heartache they had. But because the author didn’t lay the ground work of the Gospel I wasn’t sure if this faith was in the God of the Bible or in some vague notion of God. I was concerned.
The first vague reference to the Gospel is about 50 pages in. Ten pages later they as a couple decide to attending church together. That meant he left the Catholic Church and she a Protestant one and they started attending an Episcopal church together. She mentions that some Catholic doctrines were the reasons she could not join the Catholic church, but nothing specific is ever discussed. Church is then mentioned many times, but God’s comfort is the main focus as is trying to find God’s direction for their life. It’s not till they reach the mission field that the Gospel is presented a little more clearly and in more detail.
Throughout their brief time of the mission field, they truly did suffer for the Lord. But with the Gospel explained just a little more clearly it was easier to see how their faith sustained them. There is some really beautiful encouragement in that.
I think maybe that the desire to focus on God’s comfort through trials overrode the presentation of the Gospel. That just left me feeling that it was just a out of order. Without the Gospel, the basis of that comfort was missing.
It wasn’t a bad book, just not a great one.

Simply written, yet profoundly meaningful. For those who are struggling with sorrow, tested by trouble, and wavering faith from why and why me questions, you will find encouragement and hope wrapped up in the personal testimony of one who has walked that dark road and emerged into the sunshine of God's glorious grace!

Even though this book is filled with tragedy and sorrow, it so depicts the love God has for his children, the use of trials to draw us closer to Him, and the strength only He can give during the trying times.
