This book started off running and it never stopped! I loved it! I found the book to highly original and a book where you sit down to read one chapter and 100 pages later, you’re still reading. It was one of the hardest books to put down, I have read this year.
Like many others, I also loved the Nasharin race, the background of the wizards was also a very original concept. I think what I liked most about the book is the fact that I found all the situations and all the characters to be very believable. Baccaro has very strong dialog and I found the descriptions to be very well written. I really liked the character of Darshun don’t want to say too much there, or I’ll give the whole thing away! My only complaint is that I felt the book just ended. I understand that the author was asked to split the book up into installments and I don’t have an issue with that, I just hate having to wait to find out what happens next to my favorite characters.
I think that fans of Terry Goodkind would find this to be enjoyable.
Overall rating ***** 5 out of 5 stars Coverart: I really liked the cover art very creative and I think it draws the reader in. Obtained: I was sent an copy for review by Mr. Baccaro Thank you!
This is a great book and the first book in a series of five. The charactors are well developed and easy to relate to. I really enjoyed the storyline. I won the first four books of the series in a giveaway and can not wait to start the next book in the series.
Baccaro does an excellent job of world-building and provides the reader with an extensive, well thought out network of characters while seamlessly delving into multiple backstories of the races within this world.
I don’t read fantasy as much as I want to, so I appreciated the breakdown of character races, locations, and other key words/places in the prologue before the story actually begins.
To watch the main character grow from an infant into who he is destined to be, is an exciting roller coaster to be on from start to finish.
To see the motive behind each action or choice, and to admit when a wrong choice is made is testament to the author’s ability to allow the reader to identify with characters (and root for them to succeed) •••••
Thank you @pumpupyourbooks & @j.w.baccaro for the eBook.
This is a trite story, covering old ground that’s been covered a thousand times before. A castle in the British isles, knights, armies, dead king, young, untried prince has to take over, we’ve all read things like this before, and the author doesn’t really do anything new with the genre. A mostly male-centric heroic fantasy that’s just utterly boring, and not worth reading. Some nice descriptions, but awkward phrasing. Don’t bother.
As a summer heat scorched the land, the stink of death could be sensed miles away.
Prophecy of the Guardian starts off with the the people of Loreladia who are forced to leave their kingdom behind after they suffered a grievous lost during their last battle with the Cullach.
One of the most fascinating things about this book, to me, would have to be the Nasharins and when they transformed (or used their unique abilities). I really liked how the three that were mentioned all had different abilities. The pacing of PotG was fairly quick, although there wer a few points when the story seemed to kind of lag. Like when Darshun's training was being covered, but other than that it a pretty quick read.
My hope is that in the next book Darshun will have matured a little and that he won't be so easily deceived. Definitely looking forward to seeing where the story will go in the next book, especially since the ending of the first was very open ended.
Darshun, I thought he was a pretty okay character. That is until he royally screwed up and let his hormones get in the way...okay so I'm pretty sure the girl is evil and maybe even seduced him, but gosh I just wanted to throttle him near the end of the book. So cross out his idiocy near the end of the book and he's actually a fairly interesting character, but I liked him best when he was a happy-go-luck kind of person. As for Mirabel I found him to be probably the most interesting out of the whole cast. Why, because he had more back story then some of the others, plus his personality was one that seemed to catch your attention more and pull you in.
What I liked best about Prophecy of the Guardian were the monsters that the good guys were up against. I thought they were some of the most vile, loathsome creatures that I've read about in a while and the fact that they were absolutely ruthless was a bonus. This might seem like an odd thing for my favorite part of a book, but for me if the villain is weak or sub par it just will not hold my attention. While I really enjoyed reading Prophecy of the Guardian I have just one minor complaint. I felt that there was maybe just a bit too many things added to the mythos of the story, you had wizards who were fallen angels, elves, and horrible creatures all in one book. While it did make for interesting reading to see how everything all tied together, I felt that maybe there were just a few too many different beings in the book.
Content (will contain spoilers/highlight to see): This book is relatively clean until the last chapter or two, when Darshun and girl (I forget her name) sleep together. Language, I don't recall any while reading it. Prophecy of the Guardian is also pretty violent at some points (beheading, loss of limbs, just general acts of violence that happen in fantasy books with war).
Final Verdict: Prophecy of the Guardian
Prophecy of the Guardian earns 4 out of 5 pineapples.

This is a book full of adventure, mystical creatures, magic and heroic characters. The Second Great War between Light and Dark will begin and only one person can save the Earth, the Guardian, Darshun Luthais.
It began with the war between Loreladia and the evil Cullach. Thousands of Loreladian soldiers and their King met their death on the battlefield and only four returned. Of the four that returned Mirabel Luthais took over leadership and as requested by the King before he died Mirabel evacuated all the citizens and they set off for a new land.
Mirabel is a Nasharin, he is half human and half wizard, Nasharin have not been seen for hundreds of years and all that remain are Mirabel, Seth, Magnus and Magnus' son Kaylis. Enroute to the new land Mirabel senses the presence of another Nasharin crying out for help and what he finds is a baby in the hands of the Cullach. In addition, to finding the baby Mirabel discovers a crystal, a crystal that will play an important part in the War against the Dark. Rescuing the baby Mirabel takes on the role of father and teaches the boy, Darshun, what it is to be a Nasharin and to learn to use his powers.
After travelling for three months the Loreladian's find their new home which they call Loreladia. But peace will be short lived if the Cullach have their way. Darshun is now seventeen and learns that he is the only one that can bring the King of Demons, Abaddon's reign of terror to an end. As Guardian Darshun facing the possibility of failure and he could be the one that causes the Earth's annihilation. This is a huge responsibility that weighs heavily on his mind.
The journey begins, Mirabel, Seth, Mythaen and the Wizard Mazarian, start their search for the four sacred crystals, crystals that the Cullach are also searching for. Along the way they are joined by a man named Nayland, he has been instrumental in saving them as they entered a cave filled with deadly serpents. Although not totally trusting him the five men decide he could be helpful along the way. Who is Nayland and what is he? He appears to have all sorts of power and thankfully he is using it for good.
The crystal that Mirabel found will only respond to the Guardian of the 7th Realm, Darshun and it will help find the other crystals. These crystals represent air, water, earth and fire, if they are found by Abaddon and if he manipulates them using their powers against the Earth every creature will be annihilated. Darshun must find the crystals and destroy them, then he must find Abaddon's dark crystal and destroy that. This crystal contains hundreds of souls that can only be freed only when the crystal is destroyed.
This journey is wrought with danger, all sorts of evil creatures will do everything in their power to stop this group of men from reaching their goal. Six against thousands and total annihilation of Earth and all that live there the possible outcome. The quest begins with this book and the story will continue in the coming books until there is one winner, Light or Dark. The outcome is yet unknown.

This story begins at the with the returning of warriors from a battle where their fellow men-at-arms were completely obliterated . It is not often that a story begins with the lose of a battle, or the evacuating of an entire city. This one however does. The forces of dark far overwhelmed the cities forces and they were slaughtered. The remaining few were sent back to escort the people to a new land where the young prince can go grow and rule the remainder of his people in peace. Two of the remaining warriors were Nasharins, an ancient elemental race that had thought to have been wiped out long ago. Mirabel was charged with delivering the news of his father's demise to the young prince and leading the way into the new lands.
Along the way, Mirabel feels the overwhelming pull of another Narsharin. But it can't be!! Their numbers were so few and far between! Energy never lies and this particular sensation was incredibly strong, as from a powerful being. Mirabel finds Seth and explains the situation to him and Seth agrees to accompany him. They settle the people in a secure area and begin their journey to a place that is only a few hours away. Their arrival in town is swift and they observe the activities of the evil forces within the city. It looks as though they are preparing a ritual. Soon enough it begins. Mirabel is desperately searching for the life-force he felt the pull form but is coming up with nothing. At last the sacrifice is brought forth and laid upon the alter. Mirabel looks upon it in outraged shock. For there, nestled inside some rags lays an infant and the pull that he has been searching for.
This story is about Darshaun (Dar), the infant that was rescued by Mirabel and Seth, and the coming of the guardian stated in the prophecy. Dar has many obstacles that he most overcome in order to grow into the man he is destined to be. Dar has many endearing qualities such as his openness to adventure, his innocence, and his care-free way of looking at life. He isn't your typical alpha testosterone bound hero, rushing into every skirmish to save the day. He is very emotional and easily expresses them for all to see. But will this boy be able to push aside his fears to become the man the world needs him to be?
This was an excellent intro into Dar's world. There are a huge array of interesting creatures, my favorite being the Nasharins themselves, that are vividly captivating and creative. The author has definitely gained a fan through this book, for it was very well written. I enjoyed my dip into this world and am eagerly anticipating the next book! Great Read!!
Angels, fallen from the Light for their sinning, came to inhabit the lands with the idea to make the weaker races to worship them. Because of this attitude, Holy Angels fight a great battle with the Fallen and forced them back into their own realm. The blood spilled from the Holy Angels formed crystals that had power and caused some humans to gain powers from the elements. From there we have the division of different types of humans with different powers; Wizards, Nasharin, etc.
We start the story with the end of a great war with the Cullach, boar like men that fight for the Dark, where humans are forced from their kingdoms. As the people are fleeing, Mirabel and Seth, Nasharin’s, sense the presence of someone with Nasharin’s powers. They go to save that person and end up rescuing an infant that was going to be sacrificed to the Dark Lord.
Several years later, Darshun, the child rescued from sacrifice, has learned that he is Nasharin and has gone through his training. But something is happening in the lands. The Cullach have risen again and the five Wizard Crystals are starting to surface. The Second Great War is beginning and Darshun has learned that he is the guardian of the Wizard Crystals.
Now Darshun must find it in himself to be the guardian that everyone expects of him even though he would have rather lived his own life without everyone telling him what to do. He will meet one of the last Wizards and help him find the fire Wizards Crystal, fight Cullach, and find his true self along the way.
I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. This is a well-crafted world with great description to both the land and characters. I wanted to cheer and beat Darshun at the same time as he is trying to figure out where he fits into the world while trying to figure out who he really is. I honestly can’t say that I find any faults with this story. I recommend this to anyone that likes the Fantasy/Science Fiction genera. You will not be disappointed.
This is an excellent story! It's been a long time since I've read a fantasy like this one. I agree that it's fast-paced with lots of action, suspense, and even a bit of drama. The story line is well conceived. I really like the Nasharin race Mr. Baccaro has invented. Nasharins are very colorful and fearsome creatures, (I can just see the special effects in a movie!) and the whole idea that Nasharins fall under a curse because of their origin really intrigued me. The wizards spawning from the angelic race is a really neat concept too.
The only fault I find in this story is the excessive amount of character names which don't really have a lot to do with the story other than a back history. Though this is sometimes common in the fantasy genre, but if one is not familiar with fantasy, they may feel these 'historical sections' read like history, requiring lots of remembering. Even so, the main circle of characters in this story, I think really makes up for that. They are awesome!
I would highly recommend Prophecy of the Guardian. The book kicks butt! I loved it, especially the characters Nayland, Mirabel, Darshun, the klutzy-goofy King Loreus and the sexy Aurora (who I still don't trust all that much. She's too pushy. I know she's up to something). I give it two thumbs up and five stars! I can't wait for book two!!!
P.S. It’s obvious Akira Toriyama (creator of the japenese manga Dragonball Z) was a BIG influence on Mr. Baccaro. Works for me!
Impressive debut fantasy series will keep you on the edge of your seat! Tons of action, great plot, gripping writing style. Baccaro steps in to the fantasy/sci fi world and will hopefully go to the top! As Baccaro sets up the world between Humans and Nasharins and their enemy's the Cullach he doesn't overdo the details. You picture exactly what you need to, and it's not pages of boredom. As soon as you open the book you're in the world, he brings in the backstory as you go along, tossing fights and suspense in between. Well done! I loved that this book covers the span of a little less than 20 years as we watch Darshun (Dar) grow. Baccaro sets up Dar where you can relate to him and at the same time want to smack a little sense into him. :) Dar's got great potential as a warrior and as a character I loved him. (Seth and Mirabel too! yeah, really like them LOL - ladies if you are looking for this to be a romance from a lot of the other stuff we read, that's not the deal, but you won't be disappointed because it's a great read. and I can appreciate the leading men *winks*) As the battles unfold, Baccaro keeps the story going with the suspense of the prophecy. He tosses in a twist at the end of the book that had me screaming at Dar. I loved the cliffhanger as you drop off at the end. Book 2 - Seige of Darkness (also out at amazon) is in my hands already - I've got to see where Dar is going!
First and foremost let me say that I absolutely adore the plot and the blending of mysticism and faith for it makes a most enticing and wildly entertaining storyline that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. There was obviously a great deal of time and attention spent interweaving more than a few different ideas and turning them into a cohesive and believable story. Well done and I commend you. Now on to less than favorable points that I have to touch on, much to my chagrin. While the story itself seems to be written for the young adult genre, I found it difficult to distinguish at times for there were some more adult descriptions that after having read the novel I find myself in a bit of a quandary about whether or not I would be willing to let my preteen children read it. There were some scenes that I would prefer for a young adult not to read and some descriptions that would not be suitable for their age; sexual references and battle scenes and the like. The story itself was chock full of misspellings, grammatical and punctuation errors, and errors in tense with one sentence being past tense and the very next present tense which threw me off from time to time and while I am normally of an extremely placid disposition about such things, the errors did pull me out of the story. There was also an ever present blend of older and more proper English and modern slang which confused me and made it difficult to be drawn into the plot.
A exciting, fun, adventurous, wondrous and magical read that is right up there with LOTR and GOT (I am a HUGE fan of both). As a matter of fact, if you are a LOTR or GOT fan I strongly recommend this book to you). There's a great world in these pages with such vigorous imagination, amazing mythical creatures, magic and strong original characters that snatch you into the pages and DO NOT let you go!
A wondrous group of people/beings are trying to save the world from the Dark. In order to accomplish this task they must find and destroy the Wizard Crystals of the Elements so the Dark ones have no chance to succeed. They have a long journey ahead of them and must be very cautious with who they trust for some are not at all what they seem to be. They face many dangers and learn many new things about each other, their history and their surroundings. The main character (Darshun) is young, but quickly maturing to be the Guardian he was born to be. He makes mistakes, loves to eat and can be quite a pain at times. But he is the KEY to the success of their mission and is determined to make it happen!
Prophecy of the Guardian starts off with a defeat of the Loreladian army by the savage Cullach, ruled by an evil Syngothrian lord from the northern lands. Mirabel, one of the survivors, leads the remaining Loreladian people to safety over the Arundel Mountain.
Once settled there, the story revolves around the young Nasharian, Darshun, as he grows up and discovers his Wizard Fire powers. After being introduced to an old Wizard Mazarian, Darshun learns that he is the one prophesied to lead an army against the forces of darkness. But first, he and his friends must seek out the magical crystals and keep them out of Cullach hands and avert the coming of darkness.
The writing is simplistic, akin to reading a fairy tale, but nonetheless reasonably well crafted within that genre, although lack of strong plotting might not make the work acceptable to mature readers. However, it should have appeal to young readers. The book has potential to appeal to a wider audience, provided the author is prepared to more fully develop the characters and undertake some drastic pruning to make the work flow faster.
Prophecy of the Guardian: Guardian of the Seventh Realm Part 1 by JW Baccaro was published by Whiskey Creek Press in 2010 and may be purchased from the publisher at http://bit.ly/o5hvzA Darhun Luthais is one of the last Nasharin warriors left and along with a few companions; they set out on a journey to find the Wizard Crystals of the Elements before they fall into the wrong hands of the evil Abbadon and destroy the earth. Darhun must avoid many temptations and learn to accept his calling to be the Guardian while battling many races, monsters and his own temptations. This novel was a very good fantasy read. The characters were very likable and the storyline was very easy to understand and easy to follow along. Had so much action going on I was not bored and the tale is fast-paced and intriguing. This book would be great for any young or old reader. JW Braccaro has taken on a big challenge writing this series and I can’t wait for the second installment. I’m giving this book a 5 spider rating and I will say this book will keep you entranced and turning pages!! T Lane
I was pleasantly surprised by this first time author. He was able to create an emotional connection. His lead character is not your typical good guy. He makes mistakes, and he's cocky as anything. I was surprised at how upset I was getting at this character. I have never wished violence on a character before, yet i found myself hoping that he would get his butt kicked, to take him down a notch. There are a few spelling, and gramatical errors in the book. I understand how upsetting this is for some people, but if you can look past this, it is well worth your time.
Is it me or does the cover look like the actor who play in...? Sorry distracted there for a moment. The story was an ok overall read, that was at time perplexing and confusing... Full review was given to a magazine to use.
