Rate this book
One desperate night, a rent boy hot enough to scorch the motel sheets, meets a man doomed to burn for love.

Christian Ryder is a lonely man because of his strange abilities; pyromancy, a curse that causes the temperature to dangerously rise whenever Christian grows excited. He has accidentally hurt lovers in the past and has sworn off personal attachments. Tanner O'Bannon is broke and desperate. The recent loss of his father has thrown Tanner into a tailspin of debt he can't afford to pay. Working as a rent boy allows him to pay the mortgage and his college tuition, but it's burning away his soul in the process. Through the machinations of an escort agency these men are thrown together. Smoldering embers of desire fan the flames of love, but will it be enough to make Christian overcome his fear of love, or to save Tanner from the fire?

It was hard to rate this one. It's somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. I decided to round it down because it read nice and quick but I didn't really "feel" it as much as I "read" it...

Tanner is a finacially struggling student and recent orphan (his dad's a fallen firefighter). Unfortunatelly, his dad left him not only the family house, but also a lot of gambling debts... :(

So, Tanner moonlights as a rent boy to make ends meet and save the only thing he has left - his house.

Christian volunteers as a firefighter which is the only logical thing for him taking into consideration his curse/gift - He's a pyromancer...

Generally, what starts as a hot one-nighter with a manwhore - ends up as a relationship.
We have some family drama, some violence and vicious twists and some misunderstandings, of course!, but also some smut, tenderness and affection between the MCs.

Aaaand, that's basically all! It was a nice read, but nothing extraordinary.

Based on the title, I thought this book would focus on the superpower, but it turned out that this book was more on the angst-contemporary romance. There is nothing wrong with that, actually.

I enjoy reading Christian and Tanner's relationship. The two guys are lost souls, in a way -- 32 years old Christian who hides his fire-starter power. The loneliness eats him when he realizes he doesn't have anyone to come home to. AND 20 years old Tanner, with the weight of the life on his shoulder trying to make ends meet after his dad left him with debt, even to get the money, he needs to "sell his body". There is enough emotion to make me sniff when reading. THOUGH, I can survive without the overused of "pretty" as terms of endearment :)

I greatly enjoyed this story by A Young. Once again, she proves a gift for bringing romance to a m/m story and including enough eroticisim without becoming overly pornographic. Fans of Ms. Young will no doubt love this story. My only wish is that she provided more insight into the protagonist's pyro abilities, how they came about, his struggles in life, etc - enhanced the paranormal aspect of the story; it was almost like reading a portion of a much larger body of work (hint, hint, Ms. Young - you're fans await!).

1) What exactly did the pyromancy have to do with anything
1a) Where exactly does it come from?
1b) Why did something we were led to believe is very important end up so skirted over?
2) Why the hell did the two of them get together?
3) Why is Tanner so TSTL?

There are probably more points of contention, but I read this a couple of days ago and clearly didn't like it enough for much to stick.

The plot is pretty swiss cheesy, but overall not as bad as I was afraid it might be. Tanner is pretty freaking innocent for a 20-year-old who's gone into sex work to pay off his dead father's debts. And Christian is a massive bundle of guilt in general. Enjoyable enough, although I think I'll be avoiding this author again for a while. Off to find something a little bit juicier and complex!

Christian Ryder is lonely. So lonely that he hires a rent-boy, almost more for companionship than anything else. But his guilt won't let that be a good experience. Still, he meets Tanner O'Bannon and starts a series of events that lead to their falling in love.

The plot structure of this book is a little different than the uusal m/m paranormal. While Christian is a pyromancer, a fire-starter, a pyrokinetic -- very little is made of this in the book except at fortuitous moments. There's no explanation for how he discovered his abilities, if there are others like him, even if there are other people in his world with special abilities.

Christian's clearly very lonely, so maybe he is the only one. He's very well-off, and also volunteers for the fire department, but has no friends, because he feels like everyone around him dies.

Tanner is at the end of his rope emotionally and financially. Not quite 21, his father has died and left him an impossible burden of gambling debt. He's supporting himself as a male prostitute, trying to stay in school, trying to keep the mortgage payments up, and gradually sinking under.

They are a lovely couple and the book is good, but, given the title, I was left feeling that more could have been made of that aspect of Christian's life.

This story seems fairly realistic to me, in terms of how the POV character feels cursed by the power he has. He is a firestarter, just like Charlie in Stephen King's book, but he isn't hunted by the government or pushed to create epic destruction like King's character. Instead, he struggles to control his power and, working as a firefighter, uses it to help people. And he is devastated by guilt over those he couldn't save. He is lost and he needs someone to know the truth and still accept him.

Early on, the antagonist's motivations are so unclear (by design, not due to a mistake by the author) that his behavior seems far too extreme. Stick with it, though: It will all make sense.

I originally gave this work four stars because near the end, Tanner suddenly knows things that Christian hasn't had a chance to tell him, yet. However, I began to wonder if this might be a flaw in the ebook I bought, so I decided not to penalize a great story for one small glitch.

Christian is able to control fire. Tanner is making a living as a male escort to pay off his late father's debts and to keep his home from being foreclosed. After seeing Christian in a bar, Tanner decides to get out of the escort business but his boss won't let him. I enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. It was action packed. I liked Christian and Tanner. I also liked how the book went back and forth between the two so you knew what each was thinking.

After mentioning that Young’s m/m books haven’t seemed to really grab me, Tam convinced me to try Pyromancer, which is about a man who can control fire, but only to a certain extent. He can also be incredibly dangerous to the people around him. While I did like this more than the non-paranormals, I ultimately didn’t get completely drawn into this one either.

I struggled with the rating on this one going between a 2 and a 3. It is really more like a 2.5. I have read a lot of really good books that I have rated a 3 and this just does not stand up to them. The concept, excellent, the characters had a good foundation, but I just found the whole thing underdeveloped and oddly put together.

Another stellar romance, rough-edged and believable, from Amanda Young. This woman can write! Christian and Tanner have literal and figurative sparks between them, and the pages heat up along with their journey. Strongly recommended.

Starts one way, ends another

An interesting book, though the title and the first chapter did not match to the focus of the rest of the book.

It seems from the start the focus is going to be on Christian's abilities; he is a fire starter and it has isolated him out of fear for others. His abilities are tied to his emotions, so he keeps himself distant from those around him to keep his emotions stable. This means that when it comes to sex he wants to find someone who he can just do and be done, leading him to use an escort agency, which sets up him and Tanner. They have a night together but Christian can't go through with it, feeling like a dirty old man for using Tanner, so they simply have an intense encounter and leave. After this this story shifts.

Once we meet Tanner the focus becomes on how he is in debt and trying to get out of it, and what that has lead to. Between his worry about the debt his father left behind, stress about school, and disgust in himself at being an escort, Tanner is very conflicted. His night with Christian, where the focus was on pleasure for him, makes him realize he really can't be an escort anymore. Tanner quits his job but to find out that is not so easy. At the same time Christian finds out that Tanner is the son of a work colleague, and begins to pursue the young man. This flies in the face of everything set up at the beginning; suddenly Christian is not worried about his emotions, but talking about how he has always hoped for that special someone to come along. It really muddled the original idea.

Now, if you look at the story from the point of working on a relationship between Tanner and Christian it was pretty good. The two of them had sparks and it was interesting watching them try to work things out. They worked well in the home together and in bed. It was odd that no concerns came up about sex (Christian literally never thought about how being passionate in bed would put Tanner at risk, the one thing he had cared about in the first chaptera other) but they worked well there too. It was a bit rushed but it was a fascinating relationship, and the action thrown in from Tanner's job added some tension. It was just so hard to enjoy this with the incongruity from the first chapter, making the book feel a bit incomplete.

I liked the story but I would have liked to know a little more. At the beginning Christian was all "I can't be with anyone as they will die". But then everything is fine. Also, he blames himself for everything and I think that was kind of stupid. And the whole thing about Nigel was really stupid. Why was he going to kill Tanner? All he does is run an escort service. I could see if the person trying to kill him was someone that his father owed money to or one of his former John's. Also, Tanner was way more mature then Christian IMO. And the final thing I didn't like is that Christian keep referring to Tanner as "the kid". You don't call your lover "the kid". But other then those issues I really did like the story.

We Will Save Each Other

Desperation drives people to do things they wouldn't ordinarily do. Fear causes them to protect themselves and those they!love.

A wonderful paranormal romance involving fire, criminals, homophobic law enforcement officers and two strong men who are strong enough to love each despite their fears.

The writing here is actually pretty good. The language is perfectly readable and though the editing is a little rough, it's not overly distracting. Plus, the characters are likable. However, the story itself is a bit of a flop. It's a shame too, because I think it has a lot of potential that just isn't developed.

To start with, the pyromancy didn't seem to have anything to do with anything. In the beginning we're told this is a huge problem in Christian's life and it keeps him from being able to live normally. Then, for 90% of the book he goes about life just fine, with no ill effects from the pyromancy at all. In fact, it's not even mentioned for the vast majority of the book.

This pattern of telling the reader that a character is unable or unwilling to do something and then having them blithely turn around and do it is repeated several times in the book. In fact, it was so prevalent that the whole book felt compromised by it. In a very real sense the plot is based on the stated fact that Christian can't have close ties to anyone and then he falls for the first person he sees, develops deep feelings for them and nothing bad happens. And we're not led to believe this was a mistaken belief on Christians part, but a departure from past events. I have to ask why.

To complicate this compromised feeling, the world isn't at all defined. The reader is never told how or why Christian can control fire, or if anyone else can.

Lastly, and completely a personal pet peeve, but the author uses 'his lover' to describe the characters during emotional scenes and I thought that distanced them to the point I couldn't wholly connect. And, even worse, Tanner is referred to as 'the kid' for a lot of the book, especially during sex scenes. Sorry, I get a little wigged out by that. I know 'the kid' in question is 20 to Christian's 32, but it still makes me a little twitchy.

All in all, it was an ok read, but not more.

Second time I've read Pyromancer - and second time I've enjoyed the read.

When trying to think of a suitable review I find I've got few words. Christian is a pyromancer - who hardly shows any sign of even having it until the last 20 pages or so - and Tanner is a smart-mouthed, prideful kid. Fate and circumstance bring them together, Christian's caring heart - and yes, a little desperation for company - keeps them together.

The primary conflict ended up being pride, and then tacked on at the end was a twisted form of revenge from Tanner's past that just made little sense. Both Tanner AND Christian had found an add for the "Male Companions" thing in the newspaper ... and yet Nigel was willing to revert to murder to keep the cops from finding out about his services? Um ... what? That's like putting up a huge blinking billboard and getting angry if anyone reads it.

Personally I believe for how insecure and at times awkward he was, Christian's character should have been younger. If not older by just a year or two instead of twelve, he probably would have worked better if Tanner was older than him. In a lot of ways Tanner was more - stronger, more secure, prideful, steady. I just felt most of the time like Christian was faltering in the wind ... until the sex scenes, and then he seemed to find his groove [no pun intended - lol!:].

Sadly this book didn't live up to my expectations :/
At first I thought I'm gonna love it! I liked the MCs: Christian seemed like a 'strong and silent' type and Tanner's a troubled soul who'd let Christian take care of him eventually.

Christian's self-esteem issues got on my nerves BIG TIME! I mean, he's rich and gorgeous and he can summon fire by his will - okay, maybe the last one's not so good, but still I just couldn't get why he's so insecure and needy all the time!

And Tanner's been surrounded by shitty people, so why couldn't he just shut up, say thank you and ACCEPT the gift some good guy (Christian) wanted to give him. I really seriously don't get why it's so hard!

The whole thing with Nigel was kinda ridiculous to me, I mean he just owned an escort service, he's not a mafia boss, so this storyline didn't work for me at all, especially when I remembered Nigel's 'feminized' voice that first time on the phone with Christian. I couldn't imagine him being that hardcore vengeful criminal, sorry.

All in all, great potential, but unfortunately didn't work for me.

Great story of two disconnected, lonely men who come together and have to get past fear and pride to be together. I agree with some of the other reviewers who say that the relationship is really the story and not the paranormal elements. There was sensational chemistry between the characters and the sex scenes were quite enjoyable. The declarations of love come come awfully soon but that's often the way in books like this. I especially liked Christian and his protective and tender attitude toward Tanner. Tanner, on the other hand, is scrappy and proud. I thought that Tanner was awfully accepting and unafraid of Christians abilities, especially given two of the incidences in the book. The villain of the story is relentless so be prepared for lots of action and suspense. I would have loved more; the ending right after the crisis resolution works but I would have loved an epilogue or more of them down the road. I will definitely be looking for more of this author's works.

This was a good book for what it was, I was kind of expecting more on the 'curse' side of things, maybe more of an explanation as to how he had this power. Or even maybe a bit more of a look at the control he actually had, but saying that not exploring it gave room for the author to spend more time on the relationship.

Nice quick read, nothing too heavy which was good. There was the odd typo here and there, but nothing that really through me out of the book.

The one thing that did keep pulling me from the book, was the words cock and prick, use one of them throughout the entire book, not both of them. It was a little jarring to read both words, near enough in the same paragraph at one point.

Otherwise a nice quick read and will be looking to see what else this author has written in the future.

Christian Ryder, pyromancer, is afraid to get too attached to anyone since his powers manifest badly when he gets overly emotional. This is his story of meeting and wanting Tanner O'Bannon but hesitating for Tanner's own good. I enjoyed the story but found too many typos (well actually missing words) which made the reading tedious as I kept having to stop and backup to see what I missed only it wasn't me that was missing something.

I figure ebooks are the wave of the future but how do they expect the public to get behind this fad when the editing is so poor? If I'm spending my hard earned money on a book in any format, I expect to have an fully edited version. Is that really too much to expect?

Nice, sweet, angsty, and uncomplicated story with pnr elements.

However, I started losing interest after getting about a quarter of the way through the book because:
1) the plot was very predictable
2) the matter of Tanner's prostitution was glossed over
3) the characters were rather one-dimensional and also predictable
4) the author's style of writing was irritating in places because of a tendency to over-dramatize, especially in the end.

I did finish the book, but will keep in mind that Miss Young's books are to be reserved for when I am in the mood for fluffy and easy.

I thought the narration was really good. I love the story about Christian, a man with an ability that isn't exactly a gift but is part of him. The debts that Tanner has to cover after the passing of his father died made his story interesting. It provided a reason for his profession. After Tanner is attacked, Christian takes him in and a relationship begins for them. What I thought I knew about the attack was completely off base when the author surprised me about who was behind it. I didn't expect it at all and I enjoy being taken by surprise.

I really like the characters in this book. Tanner and Christian have some really great interactions and how they relate to each other feels very... honest. Of course, I'm always a fan of paranormal, so Christian's "gift" is a nice treat for me, but it's not a real in-depth part of the story. Surprisingly, since this is one of the few things that can squick me, their age difference, though noted, is not very obvious at all. Instead, their relative naivety about relationships is kinda cute. :)

This was a sweet novella and I listened to the audio version, which is very good. However, I'm not sure why the author choose to give one of the MC's firestarter powers, especially since we are left with no idea how or why he has them. It really didn't add anything to the story; it would have been just fine without it. Christian and Tanner are a lovely couple, but not a lot of backstory about them. I enjoyed their story.

I started out really liking this book but ended up not being crazy about it. It was ok. I just don't buy the -Hi nice to meet you, I think I'm in love with you. This story really just didn't appeal to me all that much. There was no explanation for the reason he had this power, nor whether this was intended to be this universe or a slightly parallel one. The power itself was only vaguely described. The character interactions felt rushed. I felt like this story had a whole lot of potential that just wasn't realized.
