Niccolò Ammaniti was born in Rome in 1966. He has written three novels and a collection of short stories. He won the prestigious Italian Viareggio-Repaci Prize for Fiction with his bestselling novel I'm Not Scared, which has been translated into thirty-five languages.
WOW, this small book is absolutely amazing! It has more to say in it's sparse pages than many a novel I've read. What a rare and special find!
It's the story of a 14 year old boy named Lorenzo who doesn't fit in. He's the boy in the second row from the back, trying to be invisible, to blend with the walls. Early on he says "Why did I have to go to school, you work and you die. Who had decided this was the right way? Couldn't we live differently?...Why didn't they just leave me alone? Why did I have to be just like others? Couldn't I live by myself in a forest in Canada?" Trying desperately to fit in, he tells his his parents a little fib. He's been invited on a ski trip with others in his class. His parent's jubilant reaction drives him deeper into the lie with little chance to confess. He decides to spend the week in the cellar of his parents apartment, a chance to finally be alone. Little does he know an unexpected visitor will show up. One who allows him to see the world in a different light. One who revels many family secrets, leaving Lorenzo with new truths about himself.
I must say I was riveted to my seat, unable to do anything but read until I finished. This book explored so many of life's questions. Who decides what is different? What does it matter what others think? Why such a need to keep up appearances? How far do we challenge what is expected of us? It also delves into how damaging family secrets can be, the pain of addictions, and how life events can change one forever.
The more I think of it, the more it invites me to ponder my own life. How can such a slim novel do all this? Niccolo Ammaniti is truly a master of words. Loved this one!
Coming off the back of reading two grueling books about the Holocaust I thought something easy and less heavy would be in order; and I certainly got that here. Trouble is, this short novel was just too easy, and required little or no effort at all on my part. I probably could have read this after not sleeping for a week and still found it a doddle. Along with a flimsy and bland storyline and characters that I couldn't really relate to, I'd say this would be more suited for teens; especially the grumpy video game type that hardly ever read. To them it's probably a masterpiece.
The parents of the young narrator Lorenzo are told their son has a narcissistic personality disorder: or in other words is a selfish and miserable boy who somehow thinks he is superior to those his own age. Unsurprisingly he has little or no friends, and likes the idea of Solitary confinement so comes up with a plan: Operation Bunker. Instead of a lovely skiing trip, he decides to hide out in the cellar for a week, with his parents unaware two floors above. He's got his games console and no one to bother him; so feels happier than a pig in shit there, lives on tinned fish and mushroom sandwiches, and bizarrely covers himself with enough fake tan that the results are something like the complexion of an Oompa Loompa. His junkie half sister turns up looking for a place to crash, and the two start to get on; bringing Lorenzo out of his shell so to speak, after an initial period of them disliking each other.
It describes that there is some sort of secret that was kept from Lorenzo, but to my knowledge I can't think of any secret. There was a moment when the sister lets slip something, but I'd hardly call it a big secret; just some family stuff as they get to know each other. Anyway, it's all rather dull, and nothing really happens in the end. I suppose if there was an outcome it would be that Lorenzo is suddenly ready to live life. What, a couple of nights in the company of his sister and he's all cured. Really?
He thinks to himself early into the narrative how he would love to live in a Canadian forest all on his own. Well, now that would have made for more of an interesting novel — fighting off bear attacks, and trying to catch wild salmon with spears made out of twigs. Not sure where he'd plug his PlayStation into though. And he'd be screwed without that.

How the writer manages to turn a claustrophobic situation into a hot adventure story, I’ll never know, but I’m telling you, he does—with cleverness and grace. And even though the story is dark, there are poignant moments where there is light, however brief.

I liked this book so much, I reordered my To Read list and immediately started another Ammaniti book called “I’m Not Scared.” I’ve been told it’s darker, so I’m bracing myself. At this point, Ammaniti would really have to mess up for me to leave his fan club.
I’ll be recommending “Me and You” to friends galore, for sure. 5 stars, without question.

Two young people spend a week hiding in a basement of an Italian home for different reasons.
One is an autistic high school boy who has told his parents he is going on a ski vacation. But he simply want to drop out of the stress of trying to “act normal” so he can read and play video games. The autistic boy is well-portrayed. He’s bright and can act the part when he has to, but he just gets sick of trying to fit in amidst what he considers the silliness of the rest of the world.
The other person in the basement is his estranged half-sister, ten years older than he and a junkie. The odd couple forms a bond during which each breaks out of their self-centered world for one week. But that can’t hold off the disturbing ending forever.
This is a quick and intense read by an author (b. 1966) who has won several Italian literary prizes. He’s a prolific author but only 5 of his two dozen novels have been translated into English. Two of his books have been made into movies in Italy. I’ve also enjoyed and reviewed his book “I’m Not Scared.”

من و تو، شروع خوبی داشت، اما پایانش خیلی بهتر بود. اوایل داستان، فکر کردم که با ادبیات نوجوان طرف هستم، ولی اینطورنبود. با اینکه قهرمان داستان یک نوجوان چهارده ساله بود، اما نویسنده در بطن کتاب سعی کرده بود که فلسفه تنهایی انسان و حس درونگرایی رو به رشته تحریر دربیاره. کتاب، یک شخصیت اصلی داره و یک شخصیت دوم که خیلی کمرنگ تره. به جز این دو شخص، بقیه کاراکترها فقط در حد چند خط و چند جمله داخل داستان میان و میرن. از لحاظ فضاسازی هم، تقریبا تمام اتفاقات کتاب در یک محل رخ میده! اما چیزی که من رو جذب خودش کرد که به این کتاب امتیاز بالایی دادم، رابطهی این دو شخصیت بود، یا شاید هم با درونگرایی کاراکتر اصلی داستان همذاتپنداری کردم، نمی دونم، هرچی که هست من از این کتاب خیلی خوشم اومد.
متاسفانه کتاب خیلی کم حجمه و نمیتونم حتی یک خط از داستانش رو هم لو بدم. اما توصیه میکنم بین دو کتاب بزرگ و برای استراحت یکی دو روزه، من و تو رو بخونید.
Me estoy aficionando a este autor Ammaniti. Cualquier cosa que nos cuenta la dota siempre un toque original, por más sencillo que sea, o por más humilde que sean sus escenarios, me recuerda un poco a nuestro querido Juanjo Millás.
Aquí entra en la mente de un adolescente un poco peculiar, no espoileo. Y lo hace muy bien, muy creíble. Una historia mínima, muy breve y entretenida.
¿Como lo hace? Sintetizando al máximo y eliminando todo aquello que no aporta a la historia: pocos personajes, descritos con cuatro pinceladas.
Aquí me puse en los zapatos, no del protagonista, sino en los de sus padres (por más que estos no tengan semejanza alguna conmigo resulta inevitable hacer causa), pero de alguna forma me ponía en la piel de una madre con un hijo con dificultades de integración.
Novela cortita y recomendable para probar suerte con Ammaniti.

برای چه باید به مدرسه می رفتم؟ برای چه دنیا این طوری است؟ به دنیا می آیی، به مدرسه می روی، کار می کنی و بعد می میری. چه کسی گفته این روش درستی است؟ نمی شد طور دیگری زندگی کرد؟ مثل انسانهای اولیه؟
#من_و_تو داستان نوجوانی به نام لورنزو است که در برقراری ارتباط و دوستی با دیگران دچار مشکله. پدر و مادرش خیلی دوست دارن که پسرشون با دیگران معاشرت داشته باشه و همین باعث میشه تا لورنزو به ظاهرسازی و دروغ برای راضی کردن پدر و مادرش روی بیاره. روزی تصمیم میگیره به دروغ بگوید که با دوستاش به اسکی میره و بعد میره و تو زیرزمین خونشون پنهان میشه تا تنها باشه، ولی خواهرشم به زیرزمین میاد و داستان روند دیگه ای پیدا میکنه.
کتاب جذاب و شیرینیه، شاید خیلی مناسب بزرگسال نباشه ولی خیلی لذت بخشه. از طرفی کم حجم بودنش باعث میشه زود تموم بشه.

پسری که نمیتونه با دیگران و اطرافیانش ارتباط بگیره سخت به مشکل خورده و خانوادهاش به خصوص مادرش به دنبال این هست که پسر سرخورده و تنهاش رو برای درمان پیش روانشناس/روانپزشک ببره و پسر تنهای داستان نمیخواد با این ترسش روبرو بشه. پسر تمام سعیش رو میکنه با بقیه ارتباط بگیره ولی خاطرات تلخی که از تمسخر دیگران داره باعث میشه روز به روز تنهاتر و منزویتر بشه. دوستهایی که خیلی باهاشون ارتباطی نداره قراره به یک سفر تفریحی کوتاه و اسکی به کوههای برفی برن و لورنزو این سفر رو بهترین فرصت برای ارتباط با دیگران میدونه ولی این خوشحالیش خیلی زود از بین میره چون که هیچکسی اون رو برای این سفر دعوت نمیکنه و قرار نیست کسی لورنزو رو به این سفر ببره. پس لورنزو برای اینکه بیشتر از این پیش خانوادهش سرخورده نشه تصمیم به یک ریسک بزرگ میگیره : دروغ دروغی که باعث میشه اجبارا چندشب رو داخل گاراژ خونشون بگذرونه : اون به دروغ به مادرش گفته که قراره به این سفر بره...
قلم نویسنده روون و ترجمه خوبی بود و فکر میکنم سانسور آنچنانیای نداشت. داستان از نظر تعلیق و جذابیت خوب بود ولی بنظر میاد میشد به این ایده جذاب پروبال داد و طولانیترش کرد. پایان خیلی خوبی داشت و پیشنهاد میکنم این کتاب کوتاه و جذاب رو حتما بخونید. امتیاز : ۳.۵

Libricino dal peso apparentemente leggero, poche pagine, caratteri grandi, grandi spazi, ma che ti fa affondare giù come un sasso in un lago dentro il buio e la luce di una cantina, sempre più in fondo, non solo mentre lo leggi ma anche dopo averlo letto, così come i cerchi di onde dopo che il sasso ha colpito l'acqua.
Descrizione di un'adolescenza romanzata, che risveglia in noi domande mai sopite. Una storia toccante sulle promesse non mantenute. A volte le storie sono corte, ma non per questo possono impedirci di far suonare corde così nel profondo di ognuno di noi.
Olivia e Lorenzo personaggi di un'era senza spazio né tempo. Circondati d'amore. Succede così, all'improvviso, di smettere di avere paura.
Il finale è decisamente un vagone ad alta velocità che ti colpisce.

داستان از جایی شروع میشه که پسر 24 ساله خاطره چند روز از 14 سالگیشو تعریف میکنه صفحه اول و اخر کتاب از زبان شخصیت 24 ساله داستانه که بعد از اتمام کتاب میشه دید تفاوت رفتاری و مَنشی و پُختگی تدریجی جوونی که مرز بلوغ رو میگذرونه و تقابل زیبا و تفاوت تفکری بین خواهری بزرگتر که بعد چند سال مخفیانه به خونه برگشته و سیلی که اخر کتاب با جمله ( قول بده) توصورت خواننده میخوره :)

Le immagini sono molto forti, i luoghi rimangono nella memoria, le relazioni descritte con minuziosa attenzione soprattutto per l'aspetto emotivo e comunicativo. I due personaggi principali vivono la realtà dell'evasione e della perdità di sé.

Ammaniti deyince akan sular duruyor benim için, sanırım Türkçeye çevrilmiş kitaplarından okumadığım iki tane kaldı, onların da basımı yok. Dört yıldızlık bir kitap mı, değil ama sanırım kanaat notu kullandım. Ammaniti'nin romanlarının çoğu çocuklar ekseninde dönüyor, ama anlatımlar (iç monologlar) öyle derinlikli ve gerçek ki "büyük ağzıyla (ya da yazarın ağzıyla) konuşan, bilmiş, büyümüş de küçülmüş" yapay çocuklarla karşılaşmıyorsunuz. Ergen bir erkek çocuğunun yalnızlığı (ki Asperger Sendromlu olma ihtimali var bence), etrafındaki her şeyi belki de etrafındaki herkesten daha fazla algılayıp hissetmesine rağmen onlar gibi olmayı becerememesi, hayatta en çok sevdiği kişiyi-annesini mutlu etmek için çıktığı macera, hayatında sadece bir kez gördüğü üvey ablasının yıllar sonra karşısına çıkıp onu anlayan tek kişi olması ve bu karşılaşmanın ikinci ve son defa olması romanın yürek burkan detaylarından. می خواستم بخوابم،فقط بیست وچند صفحهمونده بود،میدونستم نمیتونم،این داستان عجیبی بود،داستان خواهر و برادری که مجبورند چند روز در کنار همدر زیرزمین پنهان بشن......داستانیباشخصیت پردازی قوی،پایان بندی محکم ،شخصیت درمانده خواهر که تاخرخره غرق مواده،برادر که نوجوانی اسیب پذیره،که در ارتباطبا دیگران بهشدت مشکل داره و ارتباط انسانی این دو.....بسیار قوی بود این داستان کوتاه درخشانی یه.نکته ازاردهنده بنظرم این بوده که داستان قابلیت این رو داشت که بیشتر بهشپرداخت بشه،مشکل اینه که حس میکنم،نویسنده عجله کرده....و یه ایده جالب رو زود لست.تمام کرداین وجه داستان،نقطه ضعفش هست،متاسغانه ایده خوب و درخشان در پرداخت عجولانه نویسنده سوخت.....اما برای یک عصر جمعه اثری ایده ال هست،اثری که میتونه خواننده رو سرگرم کنه،متاثر یا شاد...میشه با اطمینان توصیه اش کرد.
Short, dark and a little weird. This is a story about a dysfunctional boy who hides in his own parents house whilst pretending he's off skiing with the family of a school 'friend'; it kept me interested to the very end... I really didn't know how this was going to be resolved. Great read.

E' un libro uscito per far cassa? Probabilmente sì. E' un romanzo troppo breve? Può darsi. Costa troppo per essere un racconto? Beh, se sei Briatore no, però 10€ per un libricino del genere sono forse esagerati.
Meno male che posso strafottermene. E' un sollievo. Eh sì, perchè il libro l'ho preso in biblioteca (quindi io i soldi all'Einaudi non glieli ho dati), perchè avevo giusto quelle due ore da riempire in serata (e che palle con 'sti libri lunghi, se uno legge solo 100 pagine non casca mica il mondo) e perchè non è sostanzialmente affar mio se Ammaniti coi soldi ricavati da questo libro vorrà ripiastrellare la cucina o cambiare il parquet in camera da letto.
Ecco, dopo essermi scrollata di dosso il 90% delle critiche piombate su questo libro, posso finalmente dire la mia (yay! evvai!). A me è piaciuto. Ma anche tanto. Io penso che Ammaniti sia proprio un talento quando si tratta di raccontare il mondo dei giovani, specialmente se si considerano i suoi "rivali" (Moccia su tutti, facepalm). In Lorenzo c'è molta me stessa, e non lo dico con orgoglio o con immodestia, non c'è niente di particolarmente esaltante in questo, però Lorenzo in svariati aspetti della sua persona è identico a me, preciso. Ovviamente ciò che conta non è la trama in sé, l'intreccio è pressoché inesistente, è la caratterizzazione del personaggio che colpisce, il suo tentativo di aprirsi al mondo, il suo non sapere come farne parte, se farne parte. Una breve ricerca della propria identità, ricerca che passa anche per una settimana trascorsa in cantina a leggere, ascoltare musica, riflettere sul passato, presente e futuro, conoscere qualcuno così diverso da noi che, proprio per questo, ci cambierà un po' la vita.
La recensione è più lunga del libro. Immagino il giubilo unanime. Devo segnarmela questa regola, i libri sono come i peni: si dice che le dimensioni non contano ma più lunghi sono e meglio è.
Una storia tenerissima, anche se un po' inverosimile, che si legge molto velocemente sia per la prosa asciutta e fluida sia per l'esiguo numero di pagine. E niente, mi sono emozionata: ho pianto come una fontana.

The story is set mainly in Rome in the year 2000, and though I’d love to read about the beauty of Rome, most of the scenery mentioned is that of the forgotten cellar that Lorenzo retreats to for one week. The cellar is dank and musty and yet to Lorenzo, nothing could be better. This is where the reader finds out much of Lorenzo’s life. He is an outcast in school and when he hears of the popular kids going skiing for a week he desperately wants to go as well (he tricks his mother into thinking he went skiing with said popular kids). Not only does Lorenzo really like to ski, he’s good at it and he wants to show everyone else that he is too. Readers young and old can relate to this part of the story easily. There is a point in adolecense and even adulthood where one is stuck trying to find oneself and Niccolò Ammaniti emulates that feeling very well through Lorenzo. Seeing things as Lorenzo sees them is quite gripping especially when Olivia, reluctantly, comes to stay in the cellar with him. The story is not only about adolecense and finding a place where one belongs, it is also about family, addiction, and broken promises.
Lorenzo and Olivia’s characters seem completely different at a first glance. Lorenzo is just a fourteen-year-old boy hanging out in a cellar for a peaceful week of video game playing, while Olivia is frantically searching for money in all of her old boxes to fulfill her addiction to drugs. Although both characters went to the cellar to find two completely different things, they both left the cellar with an infinite understanding of one another. Lorenzo’s character is so strong for a fourteen-year-old, dealing with the lack of friends, a sister whom he hardly knows and desperately needs to help, and yet, it is very believable because he is still vulnerable.
Lastly, the quality of writing that Ammaniti puts on display is superb. It is simplistic and real and there certainly is not anything I question while reading except, maybe, “Why can’t I write like that?”
Overall: Add this one to your queue of books to read. This is a well-written novel and definitely deserves a read. Like I said before, readers young and old will like this book not only because of the quality but also because of how relatable the story really is.
