Robert K. Ressler es pionero y una autoridad en psicología forense, especialista en homicidio sexual y en asesinos en serie -término que él acuñó- y experto en la elaboración de perfiles de criminales, una técnica que contribuyó a desarrollar y perfeccionar a lo largo de sus dieciséis años en la Unidad de Ciencias de la Conducta del FBI. Desde su retiro en 1990 de este organismo, ha prestado asesoramiento a la policía de diversos países en la investigación de asesinatos en serie, y ha sido convocado a menudo como testigo experto en causas penales e incluso civiles.

Dentro del monstruo reconstruye su participación en algunos de estos casos, que le han llevado del Reino Unido al Japón, pasando por Sudáfrica, e incluye además extensas y penetrantes entrevistas con dos de los más conocidos asesinos en serie de Estados Unidos, John Wayne Gacy y Jeffrey Dahmer, «el carnicero de Milwaukee». No es un portento de literatura y tampoco trata los casos de manera interesante. No obstante, no se centra todo en casos de EEUU y viaja a Japón, Australia y Reino Unido. Nos enseña la colaboración o las envidias y reticencias entre Agencias Gubernamentales.
No se centra tanto en la elaboración de perfiles como en el análisis de la personalidad de los asesinos y la resolución del caso.

It is not a wonder of literature and does not treat cases in an interesting way. However, everything is not focused on US cases and travels to Japan, Australia and the United Kingdom. It teaches us the collaboration or envy and reluctance among Government Agencies.
It does not focus so much on the elaboration of profiles as on the analysis of the personality of the murderers and the resolution of the case.

También acusa el fácil acceso a las armas, aunque no sean estas usadas normalmente por este tipo de asesinos, pero el autor cree que esa sensación de poder acceder a armas de alto calibre implanta una creencia en parte de la población de que la violencia está normalizada. Aquí también narra casos de otras naciones en los que participó como detective consultado por las agencias de policía de países como Inglaterra, Sudáfrica y Japón. En este último, específicamente, cuenta el caso de los ataques con gas sarín por parte de una secta religiosa en los años noventa y el por qué las personas de una clase media de un país desarrollado participarían en actos de este tipo. Bastante curioso el análisis que hace del perfil de gente perteneciente a una secta, y en este caso, además terrorista. Es una lectura interesante para quien le interese el tema.

Este libro es un must-read si te interesan los asesinos en serie. Sirve para explicar muchas conductas que veo en este tiempo de tanta violencia hacia los más vulnerables (niños, mujeres, animales) y es tan interesante que se lee de un tirón.
Había leído que tenía imágenes de crímenes, pero sólo vi el lugar donde Gacy tenía el sótano, así que pienso que la versión que leí en español está acotada o quizá sea diferente a la original.

libro absolutamente brutal. Nos adentramos en la mentalidad de asesinos en serie, y disecciona sus antecedentes familiares, sus sexualidad, los abusos que ha podido sufrir durante su infancia, trazando las causas que pueden llevar a cometer esos crímenes atroces.
al final llegas a la conclusión de que se siguen una serie de patrones.

Hubo páginas bastante aburridas pero es una lectura amena y atrapante en ciertos momentos... Mientras avanzaba tuve en placer de encontrarme con una mención a Hannibal Lecter, motivo por el cual me atrae tanto leer sobre asesinos en serie.
Por otra parte, Ressler es un poco egocéntrico y aburre cuando exalta sus cualidades y aptitudes en casi todo.

I'm guessing Bob isn't much fun at parties. The author photo on the cover says it all--this is a bitter, angry man.

Ressler worked with Roy Hazelwood and John Douglas back in the early days of the FBI's profiling unit (once known as the BSU). I've read books by all three men, but Ressler's is the only one that attempts to take sole credit for things like coming up with the term serial killer and interviewing men convicted of these multiple murders. His sniping, protesting, and bragging throughout the book is a huge turnoff. Each man apparently inspired Thomas Harris while Harris was writing Silence of the Lambs, but Ressler is the only one to include a photo of himself with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector in his book. In fact, most of the photos are pre-selfie selfies of him with people or monuments/landmarks that I guess are meant to be impressive.

"...police authorities received a communication from my old group at the FBI, the Behaviorial Sciences Unit: they would be willing to offer expert assistance in the case. The offer was politely declined, since Mr. Ressler was on the scene already."

So Mr. Ressler writes in this thrilling book. Puke.

There are also several snarky remarks about how his former colleagues have started rumours that he seeks out these opportunities, but of course everyone seeks HIM out because he's awesome. Seriously? Yes, this book reads like the rebuttal of an angry teenager to something said off-screen.

Even the title is a misnomer. "I have lived in the monster?" I get that profilers need to understand the killer mind, but that's hardly living in them. Not to mention Ressler gives no insight into any of the killers he mentions in this book, but sticks pretty much to the surface-level stuff--organized/disorganized offender, bad childhood, etc. Out of all the things he feels justified to brag about, hopefully being the best writer of the three isn't one of them.

Este libro no sólo habla de asesinos en serie sino también de otros que asesinaron una sola vez y como la lógica del autor analizando perfiles criminales junto con la policía llevó a descubrir al más hábil de ellos.

También se hacen presentes en el libro entrevistas que se hicieron en la cárcel a asesinos en serie como Jeffrey Dahmer y John Wayne Gacy que en su día fue menos famoso por la época en la que cometió los asesinatos ya que entonces no se les daba tanta importancia mediática aunque asesinó a un número mayor de personas.

Supongo que habría disfrutado mucho más leyendo cualquier otro libro, pero sentía curiosidad con este cuando le vi en la biblioteca y a pesar de lo cruel de algunos casos no me arrepiento de haberlo leído.

Robert Ressler è stato uno dei primi criminal profiler americani, e ha lavorato con John Douglas (Mindhunter). Nella sua carriera si è trovato a dover capire la mente criminale di Jeffrey Dahmer "il cannibale di Milwaukee", Ed Kemper, Charles Manson, Richard Chase "Il vampiro di Sacramento", Ted Bundy ecc.
Questo libro è un viaggio nei vent'anni di lavoro di Ressler partendo da alcune domande iniziali: assassini si nasce o si diventa? Ci sono fattori che influiscono nel diventare un assassino?
Ressler sostiene la persona non diventi un assassino da un momento all'altro ma che ci siano "comportamenti che preludio o all'esplosione della violenza omicida esistono fin dall'infanzia e si sviluppano in un arco di tempo piuttosto lungo."

La scrittura semplice è in netto contrasto con le atrocità delle violenze raccontate. Scritto in prima persona, Ressler vuole raccontare al lettore come sia stato il suo lavoro, quali siano i meccanismi dietro una mente criminale e quanto sia fondamentale conoscere questi schemi.

Veramente una lettura "gradevole": lo consiglio a tutti gli amanti del genere!

Ha sido una lectura interesante pero creo que podría haberlo sido mucho más. El área de especialización del autor es el hacer perfiles psicológicos de los asesinos en serie y aunque dedica parte a ello, es una parte muy pequeña.
Entonces, me parece que le podía haber sacado mucho más jugo a cada uno de los asesinos que presenta.
Si ha sido muy interesante la parte de las entrevistas con los asesinos y poder ver como piensan o mienten.

Siempre es interesante leer a Ressler, aunque obviamente, se va quedando desfasado. Es instructivo y accesible, y eso es de agradecer. Por otro lado, tanto autobpmbo y tanta flor... sí, lo merece y sí, ha hecho mucho, pero da la impresión de ser una recopilación de casos y que la editorial pasó de todo, agrupó y pa' lante... Algunos casos no me han dicho gran cosa. Repito, instructivo y accesible.

I think this will be my last Ressler book, and I’ll just stick to John Douglas from now on, and maybe try Roy Hazelwood.

In my review of Whoever Fights Monsters, I note the fact that Ressler praises the arrests and convictions of the Central Park Five and uses that case in an example when solving the Roscetti case. Ressler is sure that justice prevailed in both cases whereas in reality the groups of young black men would eventually be exonerated in each case.

So I approached this book with caution. And cringed when he said race does not influence the police’s interest in a case. I was also bothered by his reasoning that Ted Bundy was successful as a serial killer because it was a time when women were becoming comfortable with going on dates with strangers (none of the women we know he killed were ever on dates with him).

So where does that leave us? Some cases were new to me, and that’s always interesting, but the insight was not as informative as I thought it could be. His interviews with Gacy and Dahmer were interesting, and I’d rather read them than look at their smug faces. But this book felt a little thrown together. Whoever Fights Monsters was more insightful. I would have really liked it if it hadn’t been for the Roscetti case. But, like I said, I seem to prefer John Douglas’s books.

Bueno en general. Personalmente considero que la parte final dedicada a los incidentes relacionados a la secta japonesa fue la mejor construida y explicada, al igual que la del estrangulador de niños. La información que tiene para dar a conocer no es mala, el problema es la forma de narrar lo acontecido. El autor se desvía constantemente del tema principal y hace que pierdas un poco el interés en lo que está contando para repetir una y otra vez su larga trayectoria, lo importante que fueron sus aportaciones y, en pocas palabras, que el caso no se habría resulto de no ser por su humilde ayuda.
Es de reconocer que fue una persona que dio grandes aportaciones a la criminología y que muchas de sus investigaciones son enseñanzas básicas en las universidades afines, pero creo que sigue sin ser justificación. De igual forma no descarto leer el resto de sus libros, siguen siendo clásicos en materia criminológica.

Los casos están interesantes, pero todo el pinchi libro el autor se la pasa elogiándose y echándose flores. Literal supuestamente gracias“Don Tolongas” (ósea el investigador), los casos se resolvieron. En cada párrafo era un criticar a la policía y calificar de incompetentes a sus otros colegas.

While there was some interesting information, I wasn't really sure where it was trying to go and it felt more like an excuse for the author to stroke his ego and lash out at critics or others who misunderstood or misrepresented him, which is okay, but I didn't find it fun to read. A lot I was familiar with already. Obviously the guy is well known and an expert in his field, and this may have been just a quicky shot at making some money, but it isn't the best book on the subject I have tried.

I have read almost of all of John Douglas' books, so I figured I would like this one too, since Robert Ressler was in the same unit, at the same time, with Douglas. Ressler's tales are interesting, but his constant whining and ego-stroking, make this read incredibily frustrating. I found myself wishing that he would stop talking about himself and explaint he processes in which he develops a profile and catches the criminal. I don't think I'll be reading any more books by him.

Sexual Homicide is an incredible book, useful to everyone who has an interest in the psychology of crime. I Have Lived in the Monster is Ressler picking fights with imaginary enemies and preening for the camera. I didn't think anyone could actually have a bigger ego than Douglas, yet there he stands.

Lo único que no disfruté fue el egocentrismo del autor y el último capítulo, el resto fue genial. súper recomendado si te gusta informarte sobre varios de los casos más famosos de asesinatos y otros no tanto, hace una investigación psicológica de cada asesino y al final incluye fotos

I rated I Have Lived In The Monster by Robert K Ressler and Tom Shachtman five stars because it exceeded my expectations, and I couldn’t put it down. This book is a now retired FBI agent walking through some of the crime scenes and serial killer cases he worked in. I found this book on Amazon. What I really liked about it was how the author wrote these cases, and how thorough his recollections of famous cases are. When he would describe a case, of which he described 9, he included his personal memories of the crime scene, and other things that are not the most public knowledge. As well as that, he also included pages and pages of interviews with direct quotes of the interrogations and interviews. And because of this way of writing, it exceeded my expectations, and I couldn’t put it down. This book teaches the reader about the ins and outs of monumental serial killer cases internationally. I would read another book by this author because of his way of writing, and how thorough his recollections are. Who else might enjoy reading this book? If you watched Conversations With a Killer on Netflix, and liked it, then you would really enjoy this book.

Este libro lo tiene todo: asesinos, casos reales, psicología, una narración ágil y dinámica, en resumen diría que efectivamente al leerlo estamos "dentro del monstruo". Ressler nos cuenta en profundidad cosas no muy conocidas de los peores asesinos seriales de la historia como Jeffrey Dahmer y John Wayne Gacy. Lo súper recomiendo para quienes estén interesados en la temática.

Voy a admitir que solo lo leí por las entrevistas que tiene con Gacy y Dahmer que esta última es súper interesante de leer y el como la analiza.

Por el resto, tienen razón cuando dicen que Ressler es un poco egocéntrico acerca de su trabajo pero eso no le quita mérito ni lo hace menos importante; otros casos también fueron interesantes, como el del médico japonés y su familia o el de Ireland.

Interessant dat hij hele uitgebreide profileringen gedaan heeft van moordenaars die voor bijna 100% bleken te kloppen, maar dan niet uitlegt hoe hij tot die karaktereigenschappen gekomen is..

Quizás lo más interesante las conversaciones con Gacy y Damher.
Como dato curioso, hay un caso que que se cerró satisfactoriamente hace poco más de un año.
