London 1910

Fifteen year-old Belle has lived in a brothel in Seven Dials all her life, with no understanding of what happens in the rooms upstairs. But her innocence is shattered when she witnesses the murder of one of the girls and, subsequently snatched from the streets by the killer, she is sold into prostitution in Paris.

No longer mistress of her own fate, Belle is blown across the globe to sensuous New Orleans where she comes of age and learns to enjoy life as a courtesan. Yet thoughts of home - and the knowledge her status as golden girl cannot last - compel her to break out of her gilded cage.

But Belle finds escaping tougher than she imagined, for her life is threatened by desperate men who crave her beauty and attention. Armed only with resourcefulness and spirit, she has a long and dangerous journey ahead of her.

Will courage be enough to sustain her? Can she make it back to her family and friends and find her chance at true happiness?

Lesley Pearse is one of the UK's best-loved novelists with fans across the globe and sales of over 2 million copies of her books to date. A true storyteller and a master of gripping storylines that keep the reader hooked from beginning to end, Pearse introduces you to characters that it is impossible not to care about or forget. There is no formula to her books or easily defined genre. Whether crime as in 'Till We Meet Again', historical adventure like 'Never Look Back', or the passionately emotive 'Trust Me', based on the true-life scandal of British child migrants sent to Australia in the post war period, she engages the reader completely.
Truth is often stranger than fiction and Lesley's life has been as packed with drama as her books. She was three when her mother died under tragic circumstances. Her father was away at sea and it was only when a neighbour saw Lesley and her brother playing outside without coats on that suspicion was aroused - their mother had been dead for some time. With her father in the Royal Marines, Lesley and her older brother spent three years in grim orphanages before her father remarried - a veritable dragon of an ex army nurse - and Lesley and her older brother were brought home again, to be joined by two other children who were later adopted by her father and stepmother, and a continuing stream of foster children. The impact of constant change and uncertainty in Lesley's early years is reflected in one of the recurring themes in her books: what happens to those who are emotionally damaged as children. It was an extraordinary childhood and in all her books, Lesley has skilfully married the pain and unhappiness of her early experiences with a unique gift for storytelling.

I couldn't put this book down, wanted to stay home every day and read it!

This book is set in London in 1912 which was really interesting and it even mentioned the sinking of the Titanic!

Fantastic book and looking forward to reading the next two books in this trilogy.

"Belle"starts l set in 1910 London, focusing on the life of a fifteen-year-old girl named Belle. Growing up in a brothel in the East End of London ,naive and unaware of the grim realities of her surroundings. She witnesses the brutal murder of her fiend Millie , who works at the brothel , by a violent and warped client.
Soon after Belle is kidnapped and sold into prostitution by the same man, raped brutally by five different men and brought first to Paris and then New Orleans, where she is treated with abominable cruelty and raped many times before carving out her own bold path as a courtesan seeking freedom and and life in a harsh unyielding world

The book also covers the life experiences of her friends from London , such as the housekeeper Mog and her friend Jim,y.

Belle is a wonderful character who I fell in love with, I love the way the book humanizes the experience of prostitutes and reminds us how many of these women have had very hard lives often from when little. Some were forced into prostitution by violent coercion and threats, And how prostitutes often have very big hearts. And the terrible violence and hardships many prostitutes are subjected to. We must learn to have compassion for people on the margins of society and reject harsh judgements and replace them with understanding and compassion.
It makes no sense to me that people hate or harshly judge prostitutes,

One of my favourite novels ever.

Vale a pena!

I have spent the past couple of days immersed in the story of Belle, and have travelled from the slums of Seven Dials in London to New Orleans via Paris with each and every character and place described beautifully and jumping out from the pages.

Lesley Pearse has long been one of my very favourite authors, she is a true storyteller and this is her at her very very best. Belle begins the novel a a somewhat innocent young girl of fifteen, shielded from the murkiness of the world she lives in by her Mother and her housekeeper Mog. This all changes when she finds herself the only witness to a brutal murder, she is snatched from the street and her 'education' into the dark, violent underworld of prostitution and crime begins.

The story follows Belle's journey, across the Channel to Paris and then onto New Orleans. Lesley Pearse is the master of strong heroines struggling through difficult circumstances and Belle really is one of the strongest and passionate characters of any of her novels. The horror and violence surrounding the abduction of young girls to satisfy the urges of older, wealthy men is described fully - there are shocking scenes involving not only villainous men but women who think nothing of selling a young girl in order to make more money for themselves. It would be easy to dismiss this as 'just fiction' but it is evident that a lot of research has been done and shocking to think that today, a hundred years later, there are still young girls being sold into the sex trade all over the world.

Despite the fact that Belle is almost 600 pages long it really does engage the reader, I found it difficult to put it down as the story is so quickly paced, full of fabulous characters and I was willing Belle along at a every step.

Alongside books, shoes are my passion and picking up and reading Belle is like slipping your feet into the most comfortable pair of shoes you've ever found but with the added thrill of those red sparkly high heels.

This is romance and history yet contemporary at the same time - a wonderful story. I have enjoyed every one of Lesley's books but really think that this is up there with my favourites - alongside 'Never Look Back'.

Ugh.

Two stars for a good storyline.
Less than one star for everything else.

My "issues" (because we know I have them)
- Set in 1910/ London/ Paris/ New Orleanse. Pearse fell flat by not leveraging the colorful era/ locales instead you really couldn't tell when or where it was until a character told you. (Except Belle did see a cow in the countryside once ...)
- Belle. Was. Annoying. It didn't make sense reading about her supposed uber naivity, then her being super introspective (as though she'd been through years of counseling), then her claims of being able to figure people because how observant she was, and then continually dumbly trusting people who most of the time turned out to be awful. What a ding dong.
- Too many plot twists. By the end it felt like old seasons of 90210 where you wondered what's the next horrible thing they can make to the same character.
- Everything came together too nicely at the end. "Look! everyone found love and is happily ever after!"
- Also way too sexually graphic for my liking. Pearse really could've achieved the same awful book without it.

2.5 stars.

Belle had the potential to be so much more. I've read stories before of women going into prostitution and books like Memoirs of a Geisha and Tears of Tess have captured it so much better.

The story itself wasn't bad. If you're looking for an easy read, a story where you can root for the main character and a lighter version of a prostitution story then Belle is your book.

It starts with in the early 1900s in Seven Dials, London. Belle (who was raised in a whorehouse), finally discovers the manner of the work the girls do upstairs by witnessing the murder of one of those girls. In order to keep her silent on the matter, the murderer sells her secretly into prostitution abroad when all she ever wanted to do was run a hat shop. People who care about her including Jimmy, a friend she'd known for literally five minutes are desperate to find her and bring her home.

The novel is a tad overlong and filled with almost too many twists and turns. In that regard it reminds me a little of a soap opera. But my biggest source of disbelief with this book (aside from being oblivious from the fact that she lived in a whorehouse) was Belle's unwavering innocence and determination. Despite her harrowing experiences she barely changed throughout. Everyone who knew her for five minutes loved her. She never became bitter or jaded. In fact her first thought at being a prostitute was that if she was going to do it, she would be the best. Not a natural reaction. She was a definite Mary-Sue.

This is actually the first book in a trilogy. Whether I continue remains to be seen.

Finally a 5 star book, it is the only 2nd one in 2022. I loved that the story moved from England, to France to the US in the early 1900’s. The subject matter of Human Trafficking had me concerned as I would normally not choose to read that type of book. The author styled it into more of a murder mystery that kept me on the edge of my chair as we follow the life of Belle who is not yet 20 years old making unwise decisions in her young life. So well written. I believe there are 2 more on the series, The Promise and Survivor. Belle was my 1st book by this author but will not be my last.

'Belle' has the potential to be much more, but the lacklustre writing, endless plot twists and thoroughly unlikable main character made it a tedious read.

Subject matter is interesting and uncommon, but Belle as the main character ruins it for me. Her annoying naivety and eagerness to divulge her story to anyone she meets seems out of character for someone who has gone through so much at a young age. Also, her many failed attempts at escape get annoying after a while.

Belle's mother, Annie, mentioned that young girls forced into prostitution rarely, if ever get over the mental and emotional trauma. However, Belle doesn't seem to have changed one whit. She's pretty flat and static as a character.

Another thing I found annoying was that every time Lisette is mentioned, Pearse has to work in the fact that the lives of Lisette and her son will be in danger..etc. it gets tedious after the 2nd or 3rd repetition.

Pearse's writing style here is not cutting it for me (though I could be wrong, because I haven't read any of her other novels yet). Though I am not a big fan of purple prose, this lacks spice and subtlety. It is rather bland prose for such an exciting subject matter.

Frankly, I think that the setting of New Orleans was the best among the other places in the novel, and perhaps if the story were centred there with focus on the more fleshed out characters like Etienne, Lisette and Noah, it would have made for a more engaging read.

I thought that the idea for the storyline was intriguing, however, the execution was quite poor. I found that there was a lot of repetition in the book, which made it a lot longer than it needed to be.

I also found that the main character, Belle, was badly written. I just felt that for such a young girl, who experienced such terrible things, she bounced back awfully quickly, which I found a bit unrealistic.

For example, it felt like 5 minutes after being sold into prostitution, she just goes, "I want to be the best and highest paid girl here!". That doesn't seem like an ordinary reaction to me. The character should have been a lot more damaged for me to sympathize with her, and take her a bit more seriously.

I won't be buying the sequel.

this is my first book by this author and it will definitely not be my last - i'm hooked. her research is brilliant.

it was a hard book to read as it is about prostitution. it is quite graphic at times, so it was difficult to read. that being said, this happened and is still happening and who are we to judge. a lot of times women are forced into these situations.

i love belle - what a woman. i'm so glad there are two sequels to this book.

Well this was an experience and I have a lot of emotions which I will put into bullet points

-The story was really interesting, it did make me want to keep reading
-Can someone tell Lesley Pearse about "show don't tell" and to kick out unnecessary sidechracters?
-My boy Etienne deserved better. God did he deserve better. I am so mad.
-How can Belle be "intelligent and grown-up" halfway through the book and still make the most stupid decisions, causing her to need to be saved TIME AND TIME AGAIN? Especially near the end, I couldn't wrap my head about it. She was just being insanely stupid and it annoyed the heck out of me.

Orjinal Adı: Belle
Edisyon Adı: Bir Nefes Uzakta
Yazar : Lesley Pearse

Over the last few days, I have fallen in love with Belle and this entire book. The lush, vivid descriptions of Lesley Pearse's writing sweeps you back to the slums of London. You can smell the stench, see the intense poverty, the depths of disappear, and understand why people were willing to do anything to survive. The characters are deeply layered and complex. Which makes for amazing reading. You will become completely invested and never want to put the book down until the last word. It is rich, shocking, and will deliver you to the underbelly of society. While keeping a very human connection. You are introduced to Belle, an innocent, naïve young girl of 15. Who is living in the basement of her mother's brothel. She has no idea what the ladies do to entertain the gentleman callers. Her mother has kept her completely in the dark for her own good.

This carefully crafted false facade crumbles when Belle witnesses the murder of Millie, one of the girls from upstairs. Her entire life shatters from that night on as she is abducted and sold into prostitution. Quickly whisked away to a house of nightmares in Paris, to another brothel in New Orleans. Where Belle learns the trade and is determined to become the best courtesan. The raw, emotional horrors that Belle experiences will shake you to your core. Her ability to bounce back from anything she encounters, or experiences is awe inspiring. You watch her blossom into a strong, charismatic young woman, who is a force to be reckoned. Nothing will stop her determination to get back home to England and the ones she loves.

This book will make you look at all sides of prostitution and the women who are forced to live a life servicing men. To survive and provide for themselves and their families. The characters made the book. Some were amazingly horrific, vile people, who you would never want to come into contact with. Others make you believe that anything is possible, no matter where you begin. Thank you to Lesley Pearse, Agora Books, and bookstagrammers for sending me this emotionally telling read. I cannot wait to read the second book of this trilogy!

Belle is Lesley Pearse’s latest book set in 1910 in the East end of London. Right from the very beginning you are introduced to the main character Belle, who is a 15-year-old girl full of innocence despite living in the ground floors of her Mothers Brothel. Belle has no concept of what happens upstairs until one day she see something that changes her life for ever.

Belle’s whole world changes because of this one night. Snatched from the streets near her house and transported against her will into a very sinister world where she has no control of her own fate. Only things she knows is that she must try to get back home and what ever cost. Along the way she meets many people, some good, some very surprising and some so nasty that you never see it coming.

This book blew me away. I read it cover to cover, nearly 600 pages in one weekend. Lesley has an amazing ability to write about a subject that is so shocking that really you should put the book down yet you are so desperate to see Belle survive and have faith that something good will happen next (which isn’t always the case!). A rollercoaster of emotions.

I was delighted to hear that this is not the end of the Belle saga. Belle’s War will be a follow-up (I believe next year). I have my own hopes for Belle but I know for certain what ever happens to her next I won’t be expecting it.

Fantastic book Lesley – Thank you!

This was a re-read for me, though it has been many years since I first read it. Reading it this time my rating increased from a 4 to a 5 star. I think this is largely due to the benefits of seeing the story through more mature, informed and experienced eyes.

I felt really invested in Belle's story and it is brilliantly told with sensitivity and care but at the same time unafraid to depict the cruel, brutal reality of the world she finds herself in after being sold into prostitution. While this made the book hard to read at times, it gave the story the gravity and openness it needed and was owed.

It is a long book and covers many years and events in Belle's life so it really takes you on a journey. The character development in Belle is fantastically portrayed and I appreciated this so much more this time. The way her experiences alter Belle's perception of the world and her connections to the people around felt well observed and authentic.

I didn't continue with the series the first time I read this book but I will now be excitedly picking up The Promise to see what comes next in Belle's story.
