Good Ol' Boys #1

Falling For Temptation

Rate this book
The tattooed vixen in my first college class is everything I shouldn’t crave if I want to stay on the straight and narrow path.
My family expects me to find a sweet, innocent girl. Harley Kain’s questionable past and skin-baring clothing definitely don’t fit the bill.
I think she might be the temptress my momma prayed I would resist, but I can’t look away. All I want is to get an Agriculture degree and go back to the cornstalks and dirt. It's the only life I've ever known, and I’m perfectly content on the farm.
Until I see her.
She's guarded, but my protective instincts kick into overdrive when I find out she's been walking home alone at night. When she finally confides in me, I start to realize the dangerous life she's running from.
I want to protect her. I want to do more than that. But if I give in to my overwhelming desire for her, I'll be throwing away my future. My family will never approve.
Even if I am willing to sacrifice it all and fall for temptation, convincing Harley she's worthy of love could be impossible.

This is book one of the Good Ol' Boys series. It can be read as a complete standalone.

Mj can't seem to resist pairing a damaged heroine with a hero who manages to tear down her walls one brick at a time.

Some family drama, a troubled past, a smidge of angst and a little spice is basically her entire love story formula.

She's a mother of two from Texas and eternally indebted to her writing, which rescued her from the darkest place she had ever been. Most of her heroes are inspired by her dashing husband, Justin.

Her lifelong dream is to one day write all her books in a house by the sea, with a wine cellar that's never empty and her imaginary characters somehow becoming her real-life friends.

for nearly the entire book, i really thought this would end up being a run of the mill, 3-star, wattpad-esque story.

THEN i got to the 80% mark where it’s revealed *spoilers ahead* that our main female character is ACTUALLY a minor!!! and this is after graphic sex scenes already took place!!
no. fucking. thanks!!!!!

i feel disrespected by the author for not labeling this book correctly, by steph bohrer for recommending this, and by the cutesy pink cover that in NO way prepares the reader for the dark twists this book contains.

don’t waste your time!

In all honesty this was an insomnia fueled decision to read this book and I probably should have left it alone. I'm all for the "bad girl" heroine but I'm not in love with the good guy thing and then this book took that to the extreme in my opinion. The "golly gee I saw her ankles!" type of sheltered hero is not my thing. Especially not with the religious undertones and religious family. It felt like our hero was some Amish, naive idiot at times and I really wasn't in love with that.

And that's fully a me problem and not a book problem. But then more than that the story felt so forced like it had to keep shoving it down my throat that these two characters were sooo different and it didn't feel authentic. There also wasn't much of a conflict and everything surrounding Harley's past felt very superficial because it wasn't fleshed out enough. Even the characters didn't felt very one dimension with no development. And Adam's family who thought Harley was nothing more than a "harlot" we're supposed to believe just randomly started to accept her, with no significant scene where that's shows? It felt lazy to not show anything about that until the epilogue and that's actually a scene I was looking forward to. Anything to show that they regretted how they acted or Adam standing up for Harley. Literally anything other than a throw away line where they invited Adam and Harley home.

Overall, I should have realized this book wasn't for me but I let my slight interest get the best of me. I even ignored my hesitation when I went on Amazon and saw the cover wasn't the same as on GR. Not that that makes a difference but I'm so tired of covers switching to those more cutesy, no people, covers and more often than not those end up being ones I don't love.

I liked the idea for this book, but it was very insta-love and there wasn’t any development.

The characters are described in one way, but they felt like actors who occasionally came out of character during the book. Harley was supposed to be closed off and yet she had instant relationships with Kenna and Adam. Adam was supposed to not know a lot of things as he was raised in a closed religious community, but it felt like he knew some things and didn’t know others when it was convenient for the story.

This book had one of those things that make me really angry. Harley decides to do something really stupid and as soon as she starts to do it, she regrets it and questions herself. If she spent a few minutes actually thinking about it, before she decided to do it, that whole situation wouldn’t have needed to happen. I really hate when books show the main characters deciding to do something really stupid and as soon as they start doing it, they say how they didn’t think that it would be like that and change their mind – and usually it’s too late to do that.

Another thing that bothered me about this book was how there wasn’t any relationship development. When Harley meets Kenna, she doesn’t really talk to her during their first conversation, but all the rest of their interactions are as if they have been friends for a long time. Adam and Harley’s relationship was insta-lovey as they don’t really spend time together and it seemed like they had an instant relationship.

Adam’s family is very against Harley, which you see in the scene that his family comes to visit him, but after that it doesn’t show anything. The epilogue shows Adam getting a phone call from his parents, inviting both of them to dinner. It doesn’t actually show any interactions with Harley and Adam’s family to see if they could stand to be around each other.

While Kenna and Levi’s book seems interesting, I don’t think that I’m going to read it as the writing style in this book wasn’t for me. Kenna and Levi’s book interests me as I want to see how they would interact with each other and what their relationship development would look like, but since this book doesn’t show those things, I don’t think that their book would either.

This booked packed heat. It wasn’t super out there but the tension and desire was undeniable. I think it stood out more because we have a “good/innocent boy” in the midst.

Seriously. I don’t know how to put into words the sweet but raw desire Adam had for Harley. It really was something else.

I love the idea of the bad girl good boy and this book started out with potential but unfortunately wasn’t one of my favorites.

My biggest problem was the whiplash I got from Harley going back and forth on her feelings with very little explanation to the reader or to Adam. I got frustrated and it made me dislike Harley when I really wanted to like her. I completely loved Adam though even if he was a little too forgiving with how Harley treated him.

There was also a lot of fluff in the beginning that could have really been condensed, it felt choppy at times especially in the second half. I really wanted to like this one because you don’t see many of this trope but just wasn’t for me.

Bad girl/Innocent good guy romance is hard to come by but one of my favorites, so I was excited to read Falling for Temptation, which turned out to be an amazing debut from this author!

In a way, Harley and Adam’s story reminded me of a modern day Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, because Adam helps Harley find redemption and forgiveness for her self for things that happened in the past. Adam is an innocent farm boy from a very religious family who has been shielded from “worldly” things his entire life, but is allowed to go off to college where he meets the tough, tattooed Harley. I loved seeing Adam’s views change and how Harley helped him become his own man. Harley’s push and pull with Adam was enough to give me whiplash but I could also see where she was coming from.

This book is a perfect mix of sweet with heat and a little bit of heartbreak and although Adam’s family is really frustrating, there are a lot of fun secondary characters and I can’t wait to see what happens with them next!

this girl is a minor throughout this entire story and he’s presumably 21 and they get engaged at the end when she’s still 17 and they’ve been “dating” for like 5 months also the only thing they like about each other is that they’re hot and nice also the way this was published in 2021 with THAT kind of writing I am astonished it’s giving 2011 wattpad and not the good kind also what is with the “I’m not like other girls hating women is cool” persona that they give the main character to make her seem edgy it’s not cute also why is the entire story just if you have tattoos you’re going to hell and you don’t deserve love omg also the fact that his mom wanted to set him up with a 16 year old ??? Man’s is 21 is he not it was stated several times that he was of age to drink and the others were not why do authors think age gap tropes are cute they are just icky and I am grossed out

I was sooo giddy to read about one of the most underrated tropes, Inexperienced Male (is that the name??) Trope but unfortunately the execution was not it💀. The cringe I felt was damn near painful... Like I gave Harley a pass on the lack of communication and the "running away from her problems" cuz she was young (then come to find out she's even younger than we all thought-😐) but siiiiissss you annoyed me to no end.

Adam was pretty chill and what you would expect, actually a lot better, than someone who was that sheltered and nurtured in such a tbvh, cultish community. But some shit he said rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. Ngl I'm reallllyyy curious about Levi and Kenna, if it weren't for them I'd be done with this series.

The pacing of the book as well as the writing was madd weird too like, why tf did the epilogue just finish like that? So abruptly and not satisfying at all, might as well not have had one. It also gave very insta-lust/love. They had seen each other like 2 times, within 2 weeks and acted like they'd die when they were apart or even together 🤣.

Was gonna give it 2 stars until the fmc revealed she was a minor at the end the entire time. Was that supposed to be a plot twist??? Like what???

Also for such heavy topics the book did not go into the level of depth I hoped it would

And the entire time all I felt like I was reading was “oh no my family won’t like the vixen tattoo covered hottie bc they’re religious and I’m religious too and omg so much skin and tattoos oh ma gawd 😩😓😵‍💫🤤”

i didnt fully hate this book and i actually really enjoyed the premise of it as the guy being the inexperienced naive one. i find its way too overdone if its a girl and lowkey borders on pedophilic which makes me cringe every time, but it was refreshing to see the guy being the innocent one. but i would be lying if i said i liked anything else besides that!

as for all of the details about the fmc background it just felt really dramatized and corny and i couldnt connect with it, but i did actually like her for the most part… that was until we find out she’s 17 right after an explicit sex scene! which i hateeee. the book never made it seem like she was a minor otherwise i wouldnt have read it at all because fucking ew! i dont want to read about a minor having sex!

i also hated the mmc family and sometimes he was just a little too naive and sheltered like come on crank it down a notch pls.

and lastly there was OF COURSE MY FAVORITE ✨fatphobiaaa✨ because GOD FORBID we ever have a college book that DOESN’T MENTION THE FRESHMAN 15.

It was alright. It felt like reading the same thing over and over every chapter with slight changes until the end. I didn’t really care for the ending if I’m honest. I don’t know what it was about it, but I just wasn’t for it. I liked the premise of the story, but it wasn’t what I was really expecting. I think I wanted more than I got and I think that’s why I didn’t like the ending. But of course I love me a farming man or any blue collar man 🥵

I had fun reading this but it's problematic, cliche and predictable. Honestly, the only reason I enjoyed it was because it was a lot like wattpad books and I just needed something to binge for a few hours, which this one provided. I'll probably read the next one for the same reason lol

I'm sorry but I absolutely cannot force myself to read this. The premise was very promising - inexperienced hero meets the bad, tatted girl - but the delivery missed the mark. And the writing was bad. Like, idk how to describe it but the story wasn't flowing and the words on the page felt stilted. Short sentences that seem very forced and don't flow naturally. I wasn't feeling the book nor the characters hence why I'm stopping here. It's too boring to continue lol. Also, there's no smut. I was expecting at least one spicy scene where she "teaches" him/corrupts him but no. Just a heads up for anyone that likes spicy times in their books.

Full review IN PORTUGUESE will be posted on my blog soon.

*this book was kindly sent to me by the author (M. J. Hendrix) in exchange for an honest review*

I already talked a little bit about this book on my Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ9cpOIL6k1/) but I couldn’t wait to post a full review and let you know what my thoughts were.

Harley and Adam couldn’t be more different: she’s a tattooed vixen with a mysterious past and he grew up on a farm him and his brothers will most likely own one day, shielded from the “worldly” things in life. But there’s so much more to them than that! If “opposites attract” is your kind of romance, then you should definitely read “Falling for Temptation”.

I couldn’t put this book down and I really loved the fact that this wasn’t your typical “bad boy / good girl” romance but the complete opposite of that: a “bad girl” who thought she wasn’t worthy of love and a “good guy” who wants her to know that she’s worthy of that and so much more.

I’m not gonna lie, this book made me laugh so much but it also made me cry like a baby while drinking my wine & it also made me want to read more and more Romance (which I love, but I was stuck in a Thriller reading mood).

M. J. Hendrix is so talented and she did such a good job not only with the main characters, but also with every character of this book. I can’t wait to read more about them!

A huuuge thank you to the author who sent me a digital arc of her debut novel! I absolutely loved it.

There’s just something about nice guys in romance… (because I’m convinced they only exist in books) but they’re just unbeatable. This was absolutely adorable and it was all thanks to Adam. And to think there’s a whole series being released about GOOD GUYS?? Apparently Mj Hendrix can write them… because I loved this. The innocence that all the guys had didn’t seem cheesy or overdone to me, I thought they were so sweet. Seriously can’t wait for book 2.

Even though Adam really sold this book for me, Harley was likable as well. I typically don’t like “bad” girls in romance but Harleys character was done very well to me. I never disliked her or felt like her character was being overdone. A lot of the time “bad” girls in books just seem way too over the top and annoying to me. But I really love the good boy/bad girl trope when it’s done tastefully!!!

Honestly I had no idea this was Mj Hendrix’s debut novel… she writes so well already, so I can’t wait to see what else she puts out! It’s seriously the best feeling finding a new author that you mesh with. More people should read this book, it’s a lot of fun!

this is the only good boy x bad girl romance i have actually loved. adam was just too sweet and precious for me not to love him and he was a COUNTRY BOY (i adore country boys). harley was really just a misunderstood hurt girl but underneath her hard shell she was such a softie. i think they were perfect for each other :)

Minor. Teen wedding. And weird undertones of CP. What a great read.... /s.

I don't understand Adam here. He keeps saying he doesn't care about her past and she's perfect to him and blah blah blah. Like, oh, so you don't hold the tramatic things she experienced- against her will- against her? Well, I'd sure hope so!

Also, audibly and verbally got upset when he made her meet his parents the first time. He knew what he was setting her up for, then LEFT HER ALONE. Literal jail time wouldn't be enough punishment for him.

Alright book, storyline was good! Writing was okay, not the best, and many plot points were a bit questionable. Like when she willingly went back to the guy who assaulted her??? And then decided to pull a gun on him??? Idk just really random and odd parts, but storyline was okay and end was good as well. The premise of the sweet farm boy and bad girl was good. Also wish that there was more explanation on what happened with his family?? Solid 2.75 stars.

✨"My world was shattered when I met you. You made me... weak. From that first moment, I was gone for you. Your smile makes me feel like...like existing without you would be worse than death.”✨

Ok listen, I didn’t hate this but I was just bored the whole book. I felt like it was extremely insta lovey and I didn’t really like that aspect of it. I also felt like nothing really happened. I don’t know, I honestly think i forgot half the book already.

I really thought I’d like this and I’m sad to say that I didn’t. While I was reading it, I just kept getting bored and willing it to be over. I also felt Harley was kinda annoying towards the end of the book but I won’t even go there. There were some parts that were definitely cute but overall this wasn’t a favorite at all.

I have hopes for the next book in the series though so I think I’ll eventually read it. Here’s hoping it’s better than this one 🤞🏻
