It's Valentine's Day and Sweet Valley is being treated to the dance of the decade, courtesy of Young Love, the hottest dating game show on TV. But although the music is cool and the decorations are great, the couples at the dance are totally bizarre.
Jessica Wakefield and her identical twin, Elizabeth, switched identities for the dating game. Now Jessica's trapped in a date with her sister's sort-of-boyfriend, Todd Wilkins, who doesn't even suspect that he's with the wrong girl! Janet Howell is stuck with super geek Donald Zwerling, thanks to Young Love. Maria Slater is actually psyched to be with Patrick Morris, but he only has eyes for Sophia Rizzo. Everyone's with the wrong partner! Can they find true romance before this night to remember becomes a night to forget?
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
The second in a two-part series... and for the second time in the Sweet Valley Twins run, the second book is completely different to the first book. Seriously, admin dudes, could you not have handed a single ghostwriter both books?
One of the main characters has completely changed how he behaves. Others are desperately clinging to the idiot ball because otherwise the paper-thin plot falls apart.
Save your time and read The Great Boyfriend Switch or The Middle School Gets Married instead. This was not good. It wasn't terrible either. It just kind of... was.
Seriously, Liz and Sophia ruin a perfectly good trip to Dizzy Planet, the new theme park, over a really lame ass reason. Back in the last book, on the Young Love dating show, Liz and Sophia tried to rig the game but found out it was against the rules. Liz had Jess take over for her so she wouldn't be embarrassed on television (except everyone still thinks it's her, so whatever), and Sophia tried to get Patrick to memorize a clue she picked out, but he ended up selecting Mandy as his date instead. Now, as you may recall, Patrick and Mandy, Todd and Jessica (as Liz), Amy and Aaron, and Donald and Janet are off to Dizzy Planet. Wow, that rhymed!!
But of course we have to work Liz and Sophia into the plot somehow. So while decorating the gym for the upcoming VDay dance thrown by the Young Love crew, they overhear some men talking about cheaters and both freak out. Liz gets into the park by pretending to be Jess pretending to be Liz (you follow?), and Sophia hitches up alongside some little kids with babysitters. Hysteria ensues as Sophia tries to avoid being seen by Patrick and Mandy after warning Patrick they are being watched, and Liz tries to avoid her double after warning Jessica. Sophia is particularly stupid in this book, because she honestly thinks she'll get arrested for sneaking into the park (well, maybe), and for trying to cheat at the game. She has no fun at all. Liz and Jess end up on the same ride, because of course. Then something occurs that surely wouldn't happen in the real world. Todd gets mad at Liz and jumps off IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RIDE in the water to an emergency exit. Um?? Then Maria gets pissed at Patrick and does the same thing. THEN Jess, who is riding with the host of Young Love, Byron, accidentally-on-purpose falls into the water to distract Byron from seeing Liz. Safety hazards much?!
Another weird thing is that Maria is back to talking about being a new kid in town when she came into the story back in, like, book 40 or something. She still seems unsure of herself, and this is book 114. Strange.
Of course Byron gives zero fucks about the kids cheating. And - surprises of surprises - Amy and Aaron and Janet and Donald end up having fun together! Curiouser and curiouser. Amy convinces Mandy to quit moping about stuff that happened like three Christmases ago in Sweet Valley time, and the kids end up having their Valentine's dance.
Sadly, I don't think they will ever go back to Dizzy Planet. Which is a shame, all things considered.
