The Cage

The eerie thing about Paige Adolpha wasn't how she turned up right when I was reading about her in the paper. It wasn't her fame as the star witness in the local werewolf trial. What brought on the gooseflesh, first time I saw her, was she's the spitting image of her murdered identical twin.

Mini-Review:

Thanks for the rec, Kaa!

A cute short about being a single Mom to a baby werewolf and trying to figure out how to be a good parent while working hard to find justice for the death of her twin. Lots of good messages but the writing was rough and I never caught on to the slang-speech cadence used by Jude. It definitely had great baby moments and I did adore them.

This is a great story. The thing is, werewolves and modern werewolf lore loses me pretty quickly, but that's NOT what this story is about. It's lesbian romance between two human women against a backdrop of fighting anti-werewolf violence. I found it to be a well-constructed suspense story with a neat how-they-defeat-the-bad-guys twist, with the lesbian community coming together to save the day.

Basically, it took a skeleton of an idea that was already pretty creative and added even more creative touches to it. The characters were also fleshed out pretty well for such a short length.

If you're into f/f, don't miss this one.

AM Dellamonica is quickly becoming an author I need to go searching for more from...

The Cage wins many points for being set in Canadaland (in Vancouver, on the Drive! One of my favourite spots in that city), and for doing some interesting things with gender. The premise is that monsters are out in the world, and some people have decided that means it is hunting season. Others bring those terrible examples of humanity to court for killing innocent people. Jude meets Paige, a young mother whose werewolf sister was recently murdered. Turns out her little baby is a werewolf too, and Jude ends up falling in love with both of them.

The story is sweet and realistic (for a werewolf story), very local, and the writing is fantastic. I highly recommend! It's often hard to find urban fantasy that deals with some of the world shifts in a way that actually makes sense, and it was great to see a lesbian community take center stage in the narrative!

f/f contemporary werewolf au that’s neither urban fantasy nor about ~packs and mates and whatever; just a sharply smart little story about kindness and cruelty and making families and the power of community (when the community’s protective ire is rising). also, check out this cover, i’m so completely in love with it.

reviews on tor are, bafflingly, full of comments marveling that the protagonist is female; it’s kinda hilarious when you think about.

Oh, hey, here's the queer werewolf story I've been craving. And it barely even has any werewolves in it.

Awesome short story about family/community, the pursuit of justice in the face of systems that are weighted against you, and falling in love despite your baggage. Also lesbians . I would absolutely read the novel.

Read via the Worlds Seen in Passing anthology.

When you’re determined not to fall in love with a woman or her werewolf baby, you probably shouldn’t play contractor, handywoman, or babysitter. The actual plot of this story didn’t catch me for a little bit, but once the werewolf baby came on the scene, I was done for. If you enjoy adorable infant characters, you’re in for a real treat with this one.

Cute little novelette about our world, but a version where magical beings have come back. I liked the worldbuilding and setup, and I did get a little taste of Vancouver from the story. Overall a nice little story.

“The Cage,” a stand-alone short story by A.M. Dellamonica, was published a few years ago on Tor.com; I read it a while ago, re-read it recently, and am happy to report that it was just as enjoyable the second time around. Jude is a general contractor in East Vancouver; while visiting the local library she runs into Paige Adolpha, the twin sister of a recently-murdered werewolf and newly-minted caregiver of her orphaned nephew, Chase. Paige needs help sound-proofing her basement for what she calls “a recording studio,” an obvious lie; teeny-weeny lycanthrope Chase needs to be well-socialized as a pup so that a nearby werewolf pack will take him on later. Meanwhile, Richard Deenie, who murdered Paige’s sister Pamela, is on trial, and none too happy about it.... Read More: http://www.fantasyliterature.com/revi...

Chase struggled to his paws. “Arrooo?” It came out a question; then he flopped again.

3.5 stars.

Seriously baby Chase the werewolf is the most single-handedly adorable thing ever. <3333

It was worse than I thought. He was all wobbling puppy butt and baby fluff. He had big eyes, long flirty lashes. He batted them at a chew toy, looking like some kid’s cartoon dawg—bink-bink.

A quiet “Aroo!” trickled through the baby monitor.

“Awww,” I said. Believe me, a dead cynic couldn’t have kept from saying “Awww.”

This was a very interesting take on the classic Werewolf trope! The secret is out and the world knows that werewolves exist. While some people react to this news kindly, accepting these people as part of their community and as half human, other people make it their mission to hunt down these 'beasts'. Of course this begs the question that who then really is the beast when a man takes pleasure in killing something innocent.

The main character lives in a city where such a beastly man has killed an innocent Werewolf girl, leaving her human twin sister to fight for justice in the court of law so that she can get justice and save her baby nephew (who is also a werewolf).

A delightful story about both werewolves and romance (although not technically a werewolf romance).
