Deborah Raney penned such a beautiful story in Insight. The storyline was somewhat predictable, with the hints of mystery easy to figure out, but I still found the story sweet and enjoyable.
Olivia Cline was a character you could see in yourself. The up and down emotions during tragedy, the confusion, the insecurities and anger. She was so relatable and it made her very likeable.
Reed Vincent was also a very relatable character and Deborah Raney described his work as an artist beautifully. I could picture the pieces and the artist terms she used made me feel like I knew exactly what was going on.
Insight was a great story and I’m sure I’ll be reading more of Deborah’s books in the future.

Deborah Raney stands above most Christian authors if this book is any indication of her talent. The characters are multi-layered and likable. The Christianity is natural, not forced, and does not offer too-easy answers to life's questions. And the writing is very good. (Clarity and ease of expression are surprisingly rare in Christian fiction.)
The book blurb makes it sound melodramatic, but it's actually a pretty solid story. I could have done without the silly epilogue, but up till that point it was a satisfying read.

Too predictable, and too many errors. I realize this is an updated edition of an older version, but I can't believe editors don't catch the inconsistencies that obviously weren't updated. The doctor is a female at the beginning, a male part-way through, and then a female again a few sentences later.
Her friends are Michael and Claire Meredith at the beginning, become Michael and Claire Anderson half-way through, then are back to being the Merediths again at the end.
But it was a sweet story that I read in a few hours. So 3 stars for that.

I love this author! She has a great way of taking something we would consider a tragedy, something that tears your heart up, and shows how God might work all the little details of their life and the life's of others, and bring something wonderful out of it all. It's amazing each time she does it. When you think you know what's next, you always wind up surprised. Our great God is at the center of her novels, and must be at the center of her life as well. Because of that, you can't go wrong with her books. This one was another winner, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Honestly, I couldn't put it down!

Mooi boek, maar met een te abrupt open eind. Uiteraard maak je als lezer het verhaal zelf af met een geweldige invulling. Toch had ik graag gezien dat de auteur het zelf zou afronden.

Olivia never seen it coming. She leaves all that she's familiar with in Illinois to move to a new town in Missouri. Her husband Derek has found a promising position there and leaves Olivia behind in Chicago to finish up things there before joining him in their new home. Olivia is not eager for this move but looks forward to sharing a new life with her husband.

This was quite an interesting and satisfying read. Christian romantic fiction like this can often be cheesy and unrealistic, but at times I find it strangely comforting and get inexplicable cravings for it. I wish I lived in the world they describe, a world where everyone in the entire town loves God, bakes cookies, goes to church and lives in a two-storey house on a beautiful tree-lined street.
But yeah, I like the way Deborah Raney writes - she's one of the better Christian romance authors I've come across. Her characters are quite three-dimensional and believable, although she does tend to write about the same subjects over and over again. Awesome and disappointment all together.
This was a wonderful story line and good writing. Loved the characters in the book but the ending should have been so much better. It ruined all the good things for me. Just a few more pages would have made it so much better. Not enough closure.

I always love Deborah Raney's books. This one is very special as she deals with so many life lessons. There is financial strain, unwanted pregnancy, forgiveness for wrongs, trust, love and letting go of the past. I highly recommend this book because I believe you will love it as much as I do.

Good read
I enjoyed this book. The only thing I didn’t like was how Olivia reacted when she found out Reed had gotten her dead husbands corneas. It was silly. She should have been happy. Oh well I don’t make the characters so what they do OT was still a good book

The characters were likable and the storyline interesting and unique. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a story of love, loss, redemption, and forgiveness.

My comments:
Although this story was predictable and it was obvious early on how it would turn out it did not spoil my enjoyment of it. Olivia and Reed were relatable characters and it was lovely how god was brought into the story, I liked the way the Christian element of the story was done not in a forceful manner so non-christians can still get a lot from it and see the wonders god can do without having religion pushed on them.
The story itself although sad in a lot of ways was full of hope as well and it was lovely how the author handled the subject matter. This is my first book by this author and it certainly will not be my last. I already have a bunch of others the canfield trillogy and another trillogy plus a couple of novels so i'm really looking forward to future reading of this authors work. I love christian fiction and this author writes it really well. I also loved the fact the romance was not the centre of the book and focused on both Oliviea and Reeds story concentrating on them getting to know each other through there love of art and Olivia's situation. I loved Reeds kindness and willigness to do whatever was needed to help. Looking forward to more in the future of this authors work fully deserves the 5 star rating.

At my local writers’ conference this July, I was blessed to meet author Deborah Raney and her artist husband Ken Raney. Her book Insight intrigued me because the storyline featured an artist. Since I’m an artist, I decided to choose this book as my first taste of her large collection of Christian fiction titles.
I enjoy fiction, but I don’t read it very often because I put my life on hold to finish the book (if it’s good enough). Insight drew me in and I read it all the way through on one Sunday afternoon and evening, enjoying every minute. I felt sad when it ended, not because the book had a sad ending, but because I felt so connected to her characters and I wanted the story to continue! To me, that’s a sign of quality fiction.
This story involves Olivia, a recently widowed woman, who goes to work for Reed, an artist in need of assistance for the first time in his life due to a health issue. Their stories begin to intertwine in unexpected ways as their romance blossoms. Life gets more complicated when she discovers she is pregnant by her dead husband. I enjoyed the details and nuances in each character’s story along with their stories of faith. I also liked the setting in a small Missouri town that’s similar to my own. I wasn’t quite sure how the story would end, so the book held my interest up until the last chapter.

I found Olivia to be the most selfish "main character" I've ever read. I mean, in the beginning even her husband's unimaginable death was all about her. Never even recalled that she got a call from him probably as he was about to die. No concern the stray cat was annoying the neighbor, calls on a friend when SHE needs someone, treats Reed's kindness with what it means to her not him, and generally goes through life collecting what Olivia wants. Very good example of our Christian belief that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." The timing was confusing in that I couldn't tell if it was the next day or several weeks later and I'm not convinced the author knew either. I prefer romantic suspense but in the beginning I cried over the dramatic situation. By the end I was over it. I don't read to get sad so that could influence me. I had to read to the end so I could know how Reed's life turned out.

Beautiful story about a woman's love for her husband, for her art, for her child, and for her employer... not in that order. It's an organ donor story - her husband dies, his corneas go to an artist who is losing his sight, and she ends up working for the man. Falling in love with the man.
The story is written so breathtakingly, with description, characterization, and dialogue that makes you feel immersed in the entire tale. The reader is drawn in to experience her pain, loss, uncertainty, fear, shock, and later regret.
There's only one thing I hated about this book: The Ending. My gosh, could you have robbed me any worse? After all the yearning, build-up, regret, hope... and you cut the story off without a shred of passion between them? SERIOUSLY?
I had to take a star. Because that was just crappy to do to us. After a delicious story like that, to snap it off short of resolution really peeved me. Just sayin'.

This story had tragedy in it. Derek getting killed before Olivia even movies to join him in Hanover Falls starts the book off with a bang. Reading about how Olivia deals with the death and a new town, finding out she is pregnant with Derek's child endeared me to the book. I wondered what I would have done in her situation. Reed is perfect - well except for his eyesight. But he loves Olivia and it is so sweet how he takes care of her when she has to go on bedrest. Then comes the dramatic event of Olivia and Reed discovering Reed got Derek's corneas for his eye transplant. This news is too much for Olivia to handle and she takes off back to Chicago. Interesting ending of how they end up back together again and it's a happily ever after ending. Loved the epilogue. Just a tiny hint into what life would be like for Reed and Olivia once they were married.

I am such a fan of Raney and her works and this one did not disappoint. The situations she brings to life in her books are so unique and yet not implausible at all! Her characters are well developed and real. My one warning is do not read her books if you don't want to "feel" anything while you read. Her books touch so many emotions for me.
I also love how she weaves faith into her storylines but her characters are not perfect Christians. They struggle with their faith... with questioning why God allows certain things to happen... with knowing His will for their life. All the things most of us struggle with at some point in our faith journey. ]
The one negative for me is I always hate to see the story end.. I miss the characters and have to imagine for myself where they are and how they are doing.

“Insight” is the story about a couple who has just weathered through a difficult time in their marriage. Looking for a fresh start, they decide to quit their jobs, move, and begin afresh in a new town hoping to leave the bad memories behind and get a second chance on their marriage. But it’s never that simple and sometimes life takes a different turn.
Readers who like reading novels that touch on real life matters - marital issues or other thought provoking subjects; who are encouraged when characters persevere through difficult times and come out stronger on the other side, will probably really enjoy Deborah Raney’s “Insight.” This is a Clean novel - without any sexual intimacy or profanity. Heat level is very mild, 1 in 0-5.

It grabbed me from the start. The characters were likable and believable. The story concerned a young woman who was struggling to overcome her husbands infidelity and sudden death. The book had good and bad.
Good:
1. Likeable characters
2. Real life issues dealing with infidelity and God's will.
3. Well written
4. I love a book that hooks me on the first page.
Bad
1. a bit of "fluffy" Christian ideas.
2. Things wrap up a bit to quickly and neatly.
3. Quite a bit has to be assumed instead of being supplied with the reasoning and emotions in the end.
I will likely try one more of her books.

This is the first book I've read by this author and not my usual genre of choice. I found the story predictable from the beginning, but still, I was driven to finish. It reminded me of the movie Return to Me. Ms. Raney's writing style is comforting and flows well. I couldn't quite connect with the characters, but I loved the artsy setting. With both main characters being painters, it piqued my interest. As the plot progressed, I would have liked to have known more backstory on Olive's (MC) deceased husband and their relationship. The hints at that were well done...leaving me wanting more. The ending was very satisfying, and overall, it was a sweet read.

"Insight" is a Christian romance, and I should have liked it better. It had realistic, complex characters who grew through the events they endured. I guess I just felt like the pivotal event at the beginning was never fully explained. Why was Derek at his new job when no one else was there and he was expecting his wife to arrive that day? Why did the explosion happen, and, as Olivia wondered, how did it kill him while leaving all of his organs undamaged? Add to that how Reed just happened to get a transplant from Derek and then hire Olivia just seemed forced. Most people won't be bothered by this and can just enjoy the new romance. There was no sex or bad language.

July 21, 2023Although this was a pretty good book I was surprised by a few things that just didn't follow through to make any sense in a few areas of this story. I can't remember the ones early on that didn't follow the timeline etc. I only remember the one at towards the end when the main character didn't know anyone to call to help her when she was in labor. It went from that to she'd had the baby. No explanation how she got to the hospital. This was minor in comparison to a couple other things that didn't make any sense.

I like reading a book that reminds me that there are kind, open, loving strangers in this world. This book stands in sharp contrast to all the apocalypse Sci-Fy novels I've read lately. The story took a strange bend near the end, but the light of God put all in perspective. I've finished this book in a refreshed, hopeful, thankful, happier mind set. You will, too.

Excellent subject. The amount of traumas suffered by these characters, and their continued faith in God is the kind of encouragement we need right now.
Remembering, as they did, to trust Him to lead you in your decisions. Sometimes you have to step back before you see the perfect place for you.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance with a happy ending!

This heart-breaking, yet heart-warming novel all in one maintained my attention throughout. Much character development revolving around the grieving process, although magnified triple-fold with extenuating circumstances. Sweet and clean novel with some Christian inferences, but not overwhelming the story. Perfect title to the book which encompasses themes in totality. Highly recommended, but keep the tissues nearby.

I loved it!
Oh my gosh!! I so loved this book. The story line of transplant hit close to home and a new marriage after widowhood. The confusing feelings of loss & betrayal; the mix of loss and love for someone gone and someone new. If this was a paper bound book, I’d call it a page turner. Do we now say “fast swiper”? Well I couldn’t stop reading it. Thank you, Deborah for filling my hours with such fine literature.

Creative premise. It was the type you don't want to put down. Although predictable it was still really good. It didn't seem plausible that she never mentioned all the mundane things of getting prepared for a baby. Things like buying a crib getting the necessary gear for the baby. Who would really pack up like that and move with only a month or so left to deliver and no one to help? I suppose its possible but it wasn't really mentioned.
