Joseph Smith once said we have more claim on our Heavenly Father for information on what happens to us when we die than any other subject. Still, it's hard to figure out exactly what happens during the process. Prophetic Teachings on Death, Angels, and Heavenly Manifestations provides a succinct yet powerful summary of our latter-day understanding. Learn from the prophets and increase your testimony of your own eternal destiny as you read this must-have book.
Bite size learning in each chapter for what is to come when our spirit leaves our mortal body and where we go. Mainly scriptures with quotes and stories from past church leaders, with little commentary from the Author, who specifically wrote it this way. Lots of peace and understanding gained through reading this book. If you have a loved one who has passed away and you wonder where they are now or you wonder where you will go, I highly suggest reading this book.
12 chapters of learning:
1- our first estate 2- our second estate 3- spirits look like mortals 4- defining death 5- The separation of spirit and body 6- deaths of infants and children 7- stillborn children 8- Paradise and spirit prison 9- The world of separated spirits 10- grades or classes of Angels 11- progression in the spirit world 12- heavenly manifestations
Gives clear, in-depth information using scriptures and quotes from prophets and past general authorities. It gave me a greater understanding of the plan of salvation as a whole, and helped strengthen my testimony. The only thing I didn't like is that the book often repeats the same paragraph in a chapter word-for-word to drive the point home. A few times would be okay, but it happens more often than every other chapter.
It's a quick read, and the chapter headings give you a clear understanding of what's inside, so you can answer a specific question if needed.
This is a fantastic read. Bruce brings many insightful doctrines together in a very readable format. This book has many quotes from past prophets that one does not find easily. The doctrines of the after life and specifics about what that will be like are particularly interesting. I have read all of Bruce Dana's books and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Thanks Bruce!
The title is a great description of what is in the book. I love that everything said on each subject is quoted by or backed up by quotes of the prophet's and apostles. I learned quite a bit from this book.
Good survey of LDS authorities' sources on these interesting topics. NOT sensationalized, so there's nothing particularly gripping, but very comforting about an area about which we have little information.
