Amazon.com Review Christopher R. Howard's Darkstar boasts as much "terrible beauty" as a William Butler Yeats poem, but this is no classic Irish love story. Rather, our suicidal antihero, Sailor, struggles to reunite with his lady-love, Liz, an exotic dancer who is one of the few people in his hardscrabble life to show him any kindness. However, the clock is ticking, for the Irish Sun has warned of a catastrophic "burp from a distant star" that will likely destroy the Earth in two year's time. Soon they're devising a dangerous scheme to ensure that their brief time together is bought and paid for. Not surprisingly, Howard doesn't tie a bow at the end of this tragic tale, but his lyrical writing makes the journey more satisfying than the destination. --Erin Kodicek
