Forty-something psychic medium Marna Langley, a paranormal investigator and rising television personality, faces off against a world-renowned debunker.
With only 48-hours to investigate the infamous cemetery caretaker’s house, Marna, along with her ghost-shifting cat, and her team set out to capture evidence of numerous reported hauntings.
But while she deals with unpredictable spirit channeling sessions and a glitchy crystal ball, the debunker goes missing and Marna’s co-host is blamed.
As she and her crew film a Midnight Calls episode, they discover the debunker’s body. Proving the co-host innocent may be impossible because he, along with the locals—both living and dead—believe he’s guilty of this most recent murder in Death’s Door, Tennessee.
Southerner Kat McGee writes paranormal cozy mysteries set in the magical South, including visits to the mystical shores of Maine and the haunting streets of New Orleans, with a bit of mayhem thrown in. Fast-heading toward crazy-cat-lady status, she enjoys chocolate nonpareils, and her favorite mystery book and movie is Where the Crawdads Sing.
This is a funny story about a real life medium Marna who also happens to be a ghost hunter with a successful tv show. She and her crew have just moved their home base to the town of Death’s Door one of the most haunted places around. The crew is on a site filming when a rival/ debunker shows up unannounced and unwanted. When Elliot the most unpleasant debunker turns up dead suspicions fall on Marna and her crew. Now she must use all her abilities to get to the bottom of the mysteries: the murder and the haunted house where it happened. That’s just the beginning. There’s so much more revealed when the investigation gets going. Lies, betrayals, some really wacky takes on police procedures and some spooky supernatural happenings. Magic, mystery, ghosts, murder there’s a bit of something for everyone. The characters are fun and endearing. They have the makings of a new Scooby gang. The town has a Twin Peaks kinda feel to it. Everyone is hiding something and it makes the story rich and engaging. Definitely want a return visit with these characters!

Couldn't finish this monstrosity, literally the only book in my life I've had to put down in frustration and the first review I've wasted my time to write. Zero depth of language meant the same cliches and sometimes the same exact words ("He waved a crumpled piece of paper around like it was a winning lottery ticket" and "he clutched that crumpled paper like it was his golden ticket" then "the faint scent of lavender from the sachet I had tucked under his pillow" twice in the same scene) used over and over; "like" in every other sentence somehow, trying to hard to be a millennial/gen z maybe; continuity errors ("Bridget bolted from the room" then in the next chapter "Bridget gaped with a mix of fear and fascination" but no return; "Gareth muttered 'I'll go check on her' yet he returns twice "Gareth had returned and now stood beside Bridget" and "A loud huff signaled Gareth's stormy return"); timeline errors ("Just after sunrise" then "Outside, the October morning" yet "Back at the cemetery, the night chill"); editing/grammar errors too numerous to count; ridiculous woke phrases ("Was this the man he had become before he was unalived?"); the Sheriff not questioning anyone when the men were attacked and offering that the team should come back to the crime scene and he would help them investigate. The cat was the best character yet she wasn't immune to the train-wreck of this writing. I was so frustrated I had to just stop at chapter 13 and just writing this review I had to stop myself from getting worked up over it again.
This is the first novel of Kat Mayer's Midnight Calls series. There is a prequel that might help your enjoyment of this book. It would have benefited from a more careful proofreader. Marna and Cooper are the driving force behind the paranormal hunter show Midnight Calls. She is a medium that sees and talks to various spirits. He is more responsible for the business side of things. Bridget, who is Marna's niece, and the tech guy Nicholas round out their crew. While filming on location in Death's Door, Tennessee, their production is interrupted by Elliot and Violet from a paranormal debunker show. Soon, death follows as the town lives up to its name. The identity of the killer is kept in doubt until the last chapter by good use of misdirection and a couple of people who had good reason to be suspects. If you like some paranormal to go along with your mysteries, this could be be a good choice for you.
Everyone seems to have an interest in ghost stories; as far back as childhood days sitting by a campfire telling scary stories to each other, the thrill never stops. So this one will positively pull the reader in for an exciting confrontation of a popular psychic and a cantankerous debunker.

There is so much more going on here, but the excitement of the investigation will keep the reader eagerly anticipating their next step. Grab your copy and enjoy the mystery!

The essence of this story is excellent, and the bones are solid, but the hokey deep south parody of their sayings is way over the top and detracts from the story instead of adding a comic flavor as I am certain the author intended. Otherwise the characters are very interesting, the plot is easily followed, and the premise is finding out what happened to all the souls missing from the cemetery. The answers tended to be confusing at least for me. Others might understand better than I did. All in all, I still recommend this book for the paranormal aspect.
Midnight Calls, a paranormal TV show sets up in the Caretaker's house to try to prove there really are spirit residing in the house. What they weren't prepared for was the competition of a debunked and his assistant to try to stop them. There are so many things going on that I read this book all day as I had to see what happens. I can't wait for the next book as I am sure it will be just as interesting as this one was.
This book was just too incoherently chaotic for my taste. It wasn't clear what was going on a lot of the time - not in the 'It's a mystery, so we don't know stuff" sense, but in the "does the author even know what they're trying to do here?" sense. I wavered about finishing this one at several points, but in the end the urge to find out who dunnit won out - but only just. No more of this series for me, thanks.
This book was really fun and interesting read. It moves at such a great pace and has such interesting characters. You will find a character that you will love in this series. The twist and turns in this book was really grab you and you don't know what will happen next. I am really looking forward to more of Marna and the other characters.
Murder Psyched is the first book in the Midnight Calls Mysteries series and is a fantastic start to this new series. I loved this book. The characters are quirky and interesting. The story is engaging and has humour, murder, mystery, and magic.

DNF. Made it to chapter 5. I like the main character, as well as the supporting characters, but the only one that felt real what is the MC. The rest of them came across as rather transparent. I gave up, though, because the story lacked cohesion, and I felt confused, even though I knew what was going on.
While I think this might be billed as a cosy mystery, I believe it us on the darker side. At least this first one. I really liked all the characters. Our leading lady was very strong and not a youngster either. I loved Lilly the cat. The mystery was excellent and very well written. Will be reading more.
This cozy mystery is fun, fast-paced and full of action and magic. The storyline is very entertaining. The twists and turns will keep you guessing as Marna and a cast of interesting characters try to solve the murder mystery.

I loved the investigation group! My hubbie’s a medium, so this was really interesting for me to read. We used to do investigations too! Luckily, my husband does channel the spirits, but he can sometimes get reading from touching something. Anyway, super fun book and I can’t to read more in this series.
Really enjoyed this story. Twists and turns until the very end. As time permits I'll read other books by this author. My TBR list is long, but I'll come back for more. Also liked that there was no romance. Sometimes romance can detract and slow the story down. No cliffhanger ending.
I really enjoyed the storyline of the book. This was such a nail biter of a page turner. A great read. I loved the book. The plot was very well written and I cannot wait for another book.

This is not a bad book. It just seems like a scripted book from any ghost hunting series on tv. It seemed to also have some gaps. With those filled in it would have flowed a little better.
The book frequently refers to a previous event with the main character and a poltergeist, which is never explained. Since this is the first book in the series, I found it disconcerting and left me wondering what had happened.
A film created at Death's Door! Murder and Spirits happen at Death's Door!
Are the two filming groups going to win!? One shows spirits are there after death! The others are out to prove Spirits do not exist! Hey! The cat is a spirit! Like cats and spirits! On to book 2
Thought this was a great start to a new series. The book grabbed my attention at the beginning and kept it throughout the story. It was well written, and the characters were both funny and dramatic. I recommend reading it.
What a fun book! I enjoyed this lighter read and the delightful characters. While much was far-fetched, the author made it believable. It was a nice break from some of the “heavier” reads I’ve recently read.
I liked the concept and the humor was really bad and was unfortunately something that interrupted the story every other type someone was speaking. And that just made it annoying and made the chaotic writing even harder to follow. Lots of typos.
