When five-year-old Boone Harrington witnesses his father’s murder, he is placed in social worker Lucy Taylor’s care for the holidays. But after someone chases Lucy’s car off the road in Sumter National Forest, she and Boone turn to ranger Noah Holt for protection from a gang of ruthless gun traffickers. Can Noah keep them alive…especially after discovering Boone unknowingly has something these criminals will kill for?
Kerry Johnson has been conversing with fictional characters and devouring books since her childhood in the Connecticut woods. A long-time member of ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) and RWA (Romance Writers of America), she’s a seven-time Genesis Contest finalist and two-time winner. Kerry lives in the Sunshine State with her family, a lazy boxer, a temperamental sun conure, and way too many books. She loves Jesus, long walks, all creatures great and small, and iced chai tea.
This is a compelling romantic suspense with a young boy as a central character who makes the story breath-stopping at times because of the danger he is in. Boone Harrington is placed temporarily under the foster care of social worker Lucy Taylor after his father is murdered and his mother is gravely injured. Lucy is taking him home with her when she is run off the road in the middle of the Sumter National Forest and has to run for her life as she also endeavors to keep Boone safe. Lucy is heroic and selfless but she needs help and she finds it in ranger Noah Holt, a man on vacation who is willing to take on the responsibility of Lucy and little Boone. The harrowing adventures just keep going as they face one danger after another and have to overcome the obstacles that the villains keep putting in their path. I really enjoyed the fast pace and the fact that just when I thought that they could relax for a little while, another danger comes at them from another unexpected source. There were a lot of twists and surprises in this book that was addictive as well as expertly crafted to hold my attention. With nail-biting scenes and a delightful romance brewing between Lucy and Noah, this book was completely engrossing and offered an extremely powerful story of innocence versus evil. The plot was multi-layered and crackled with tension from the beginning to the satisfying conclusion. The characters were believable and relatable as well as realistically flawed. My favorite parts were when Lucy showed how much of a trooper she was in spite of her loathing of anything that had to do with nature and camping. In fact, my favorite parts of the book were when Lucy was unselfishly protecting Boone even through her own discomfort. I enjoyed the whole story, especially how the characters worked together during a believable drama. An edge-of-your-seat read by one of my favorite romantic suspense authors!
This author has a knack for creating unique characters, interesting settings, and riveting action scenes. I enjoyed seeing characters from a previous book, 'Tunnel Creek Ambush,' in the plot for this book.
Five-year-old Boone Harrington's family has been destroyed by unknown assailants. State caseworker, Lucy Taylor, has been tasked with keeping him out of harm's way until a permanent guardian can be located. She takes her responsibilities seriously, and I appreciated the many ways she strove to keep Boone safe through many frightening events. She was a nurturing, kind caregiver to this young child whose world had been turned upside down.
Ranger Noah Holt is hiking in Sumter National Forest as part of his job when he rescues Lucy and Boone from one of the best written manmade catastrophes I've ever read in this genre. He exhibits courage, ingenuity, commitment to helping Lucy and Boone, and a strong faith in God throughout the story.
Throughout a treacherous string of events, the two adults work as a team to outsmart their assailants while they keep Boone's safety at the forefront of their actions.
Boone is a typical five-year-old, which I thought added to the drama in the story. I appreciated Noah and Lucy's kindness to the child even when he didn't always follow their directions.
Fans of this genre will appreciate the depth of this story along with this gifted author's approach to discussions about faith, painful memories of the past, and the future. This highly-recommended story is completely clean in language and content.
I received a copy of this book from the author through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.
After five year old Boone Harrington witnesses a murder, he is put in social workers, Lucy Taylor's care. While driving home through Sumter National Forest, someone runs Lucy's car off the road. Lucy turns to ranger Noah Holt for protection. Wow!! This author knows how to keep your attention throughout the whole story. I didn't want to put it down. Christmas forest ambush is intense, action packed with lots of excitement and suspense. Keeps you on your toes guessing who the bad guys are. I love the wonderful characters. Boone is my favorite. I absolutely recommend this story. I was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Thank you in advance to the author, Kerry Johnson, for providing a complimentary review copy through JustRead Publicity Tours. A positive review was not required, and all words are my own.
I read the authors LIS debut, Snowstorm Sabotage, and was completely blown away by it. I saw it was touring with JustRead and I decided to snag a copy with an Amazon gift card. And, like most books – best use of a gift card. In short, I’d started reading it at bedtime, then took it to my Chevy dealership to read during an oil change. I was so focused in the book that I didn’t even realize I was waiting until I was told my car was ready.
I even crammed 100 pages worth of reading into two (2) hours. So, to say I was impressed with that book was an understatement.
With regard to this being a “series” – some books don’t start off that way, others are not marketed as such. This one? I’m stepping up and calling it a series.
About seven (7) months ago, I won Tunnel Creek Ambush from the Love Inspired Authors and Readers group (LIARG). But, I hadn’t had a chance to read it – all the books before it, and some were prioritized. So, seeing this one – I definitely wanted it.
As it turns out – the author takes readers RIGHT back to the events of that book, and some of the characters return –
🏕️ Noah (who is the main character in this one) 🚓 Jasper 🐕🦺 Dash (Jasper’s K-9 partner) 👦🏻 Gabe (Jasper’s son, mentioned not seen) 🚓 Chief McCoy 🔬 Kinsley (mentioned, not seen)
As the investigation in that book is continuing into this one – I STRONGLY and HIGHLY recommend readers read that book before this one.
I was able to, having the previous book by me, skim that one to get the gist of this one. And, it “sort of” works well as a standalone, but not as well if read with the other book.
That said …
For this book, readers are introduced to:
👩🏻💼 Social Worker Lucy Taylor 🎒 Boone Harrington
Like any suspense book, there are going to be darker tones and disturbing content. This doesn’t have much content that might be overwhelming that I found.
As with most books in the line, Johnson wastes no time in getting to the action. It starts with Lucy driving on a stormy, winding road [yikes 😧], trying to get Boone to her place. She has temporary custody of the boy after one of his parents was killed, and another is clinging to life.
It isn’t the weather that bothers her – it is being in the forest, something she doesn’t like. It brings back traumatic memories of a camping trip that was the catalyst for her parents’ divorce; which then led to her mother’s spiral downward. An event that left Lucy broken and unable to get into a relationship.
However, someone (or some people) doesn’t want them to get to Lucy’s home. And, they almost don’t.
Noah is in the forest, where he feels more at home. He’s looking forward to three weeks off, and is planning to spend it hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT). His goal is to hike the entire trail by his 35th birthday, which is in about six (6) more years.
In addition, Noah’s left changed when his missionary father died in Cameroon. Noah is also still reeling from the death of Willard Tuttle, a fellow forest ranger, who was killed the year before (TCA) while stumbling upon a drug trafficking ring’s hiding spot. Jasper, had almost been killed.
While reflecting on events, Noah hears something. An unnatural sound alerts him to something, and upon following it – he finds Lucy’s SUV upside down in the river. Noah radios for help, but has to help the woman and the boy out of the vehicle.
She’s reluctant to accept help from authorities and Noah wonders if she abducted the boy. Once Lucy tells Noah who the boy is – Noah connects the dots. It’s clear they’re all tangled up in the biggest murder case in the state.
Noah is wondering why someone would come after Boone if he wasn’t a witness. But, they have to get moving when they hear gunfire. While trying to get to safety, Noah learns that Lucy is a friend of Brielle – Noah and Jasper’s sister.
In their quest to escape the car, they’ve left behind Boone’s bag which has a few toys, but his asthma inhaler. Noah, knowing he has an Epi-Pen, suggests they abandon the belongings and keep going. Noah soon discovers the pen is expired. Which, he can’t believe because he is meticulous about checking it. But, Boone is having issues breathing, and the pen is better than nothing. Though, that means that Noah will have to go back for the backpack (and Lucy’s purse).
As he goes back, the bad guys soon locate Lucy and Boone.
From there – Noah, the bad guys, Lucy, and Boone are trapped in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Noah is wondering who he can trust, especially when his boss can’t be reached on the radio. He isn’t sure about another ranger either. And, he’s also wondering when they get out of the forest – will it be safe to turn Lucy and Boone over to the authorities. One man he knows he can trust – his brother, Jasper. But, his brother is still on his honeymoon.
Despite Lucy being the opposite of everything he loves, he’s drawn to her. And, he wants nothing more to protect her and Boone.
Even though she doesn’t want marriage or kids, Lucy feels safe with Noah, and even starts to feel more than just safe. But, given her past – she can’t quite be what Noah wants. Though, they first have to get through the dangers of not just the forest, but an unknown bad guy who wants to silence Lucy and Boone.
With some predictable moments and bad guys; but unpredictable reveals, twists, and turns. This was definitely a “nervous” read down to the last few pages. If I had my natural nails exposed – I would’ve bitten them down to the quick. So thankful for super-duper sturdy press-on acrylic nails 💅🏻🤣 (as of note, they lasted about 10 days, and definitely gave up after I read this book).
Since this is one of my favorite genres and lines, I knew it was going to be a great read. I’m rarely disappointed by the line whether it is an established author, or a new one.
I was drawn right in, and really couldn’t stop reading it. I did stop for dinner, but was able to finish this inside of a 7-hour period. Then again, when a story is intense, action-packed, and the equivalent of a thrill ride with no safety bar or belts – it is hard to walk away from. There was certainly no emergency brake on this ride. And, books of this size are usually a “day-read” anyway.
The story didn’t linger in any one area at all, and with the descriptive writing, I almost felt like I was right there. It also had the feel of an action movie. I could easily see this on Lifetime.
Even though this is a romantic-suspense story, it is centered more on the suspense than the romance. In fact, it is about 90/10. With some close proximity, slow-burn romances that happens. Though, to me, that wasn’t a big deal.
There was a moment when Lucy had been given a heart-shaped rock, and I was WONDERING why the author sent one with this book. Without spoiling it, it is a reminder that sometimes, things happen for a reason – forgotten keys, forgotten wallet, or anything. That one small moment might have saved our life, or kept us from harm.
Since this is from the Love Inspired Suspense line, there are going to be references to God and faith, even prayers. These are subtle and not overwhelming.
As another Holt sibling was mentioned in this – Jasper and Noah’s sister, Brielle; I am hoping that Johnson returns to Tunnel Creek and gives us her story. Especially, since she and Lucy were friends. So, I am eagerly awaiting the next book.
Those who enjoy Elizabeth Goddard, Lynette Eason, Darlene L. Turner, and/or Virginia Vaughan are sure to enjoy this one.
NOTE ➡️ on the expired EpiPen, there is conflicting information as to whether it should be used or not. According to a 2017 article found on the Mt.Sinai website, some pens 90% of the stated amount of the medication up to 29 months after their expiration date. Though, an immunologist stated his bottom line is that I have to tell my patients to honor the expiration date; though, in an emergency, “even if it is not full potency, it is better than nothing”. (https://www.mountsinai.org/about/news...)
So, Noah using it on Boone was the best alternative at that moment.
Just finished Christmas Forest Ambush! WOW!! I couldn't put it down! The book kept me in suspense from the very start! If you haven't read it yet get it and you will be drawn right into it! Love Lucy's protective care of Boone and how Noah looked after them. I love the twist and turns in suspense the story took! Just when you think you have it figured out...boom! Another surprise! Kerry Johnson really took this storyline to another level!
This was my first book by Kerry Johnson and I really enjoyed it. It was action packed from the very beginning and it just didn't stop. The characters are thrown together immediately and you sit at the edge of your sit trying to figure it out if they will make it out alive from the forest they are trapped in.
Lucy is a social worker who has temporary custody of Boone, the little boy whose dad was murdered and mom is in the hospital. Noah is a forest ranger who loves the outdoors and immediately helps out when he sees both of them in trouble.
The characters are believable and relatable. They both have some baggage that they deal with throughout the story. I will say that I kept looking at the back of the book to see if this was part of a series. It read like there was a previous book giving back story on Noah's siblings but I could not find any information that there was.
The Love Inspired books always move super quick so they are pretty quick reads which is good and bad because sometimes you just want the story to keep going, but they are perfect if you want to escape for just a little bit!
Overall I thought it was a great story and I can't wait to read more from this aurhor.
I received a copy of the book for review. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
What an exciting action-on-every-page suspense book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Surrounded by danger from unknown criminals, social worker Lucy Taylor tries to protect the young boy in her care from harm after their car is forced off a deserted roadway…into a perilous situation. The area ranger, Noah Holt, rescues them and works to keep them safe as they escape through the wilderness of Sumter National Forest.
I enjoyed the nonstop action, the developing romance and the depiction of the challenging environment. Very realistic! This opposites attract story offers examples of perseverance, forgiveness and learning to trust.
I highly recommend author Kerry Johnson’s inspirational book, Christmas Forest Ambush, to romantic suspense readers who like twists and surprises along the trail to a happily-ever-after ending.
Favorite quote: He knew his work was part of God’s purpose for him. Help others while maintaining God’s creation.

Christmas Forest Ambush is another great book by Kerry Johnson. The book opens with a car chase, and the action doesn't stop. I loved Noah and Lucy's story. How they work through their fears while running from gunmen. And with a darling little boy named Boone to protect as well. Plus, a surprise twist ending. This book was great from beginning to end.
I was provided an advanced review copy of this book by the author/publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
If you are looking for a wild ride of a romantic suspense read, have I got the story for you. Christmas Forest Ambush starts off with a wild car chase and Kerry Johnson seriously runs her characters through the wringer from there on out in this Love Inspired Suspense novel.
Christmas Forest Ambush really kept me flipping those pages wanting to find out just why the bad guys are after a little boy and who those bad guys might be. I seriously had my suspicions about certain characters, but, gee, some of them were even more villainous than I had anticipated.
Kerry Johnson gives her readers a good Love Inspired Suspense treat with this book. It's edge of your seat exciting and I love how it is interconnected with her previous one but can totally be read on its own too. In the end, there's nothing better than a cold afternoon with a warm blanket, a warm drink, and an icy who-done-it to solve...
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
This is such a fabulous story. I love Lucy, Boone and Noah. I have to say Boone holds a place in my heart. Boone was present when his father who was the district attorney was killed and his mother was left in a coma. Lucy, a social worker, had Boone in temporary custody as they await the judges final placement. No one knew that Boone was a witness. Lucy and Boone were targeted. Could Lucy keep Boone safe. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is a must read.
CHRISTMAS FOREST AMBUSH by Kerry Johnson is the wonderful, edge of your seat, suspenseful story of Lucy Taylor, case worker for state of South Carolina, and Ranger Noah Holt. Strangers, that met under very unusually and almost disastrous circumstance in the Sumter National Forest, with absolutely nothing in common, but both willing to put their life on the line to save little five-year-old Boone Harrington.
The young Boone came into Kerry’s custody after his dad, District Attorney Ryan Harrington, was murdered and his mom was left for dead and now in a coma in the hospital. Kerry’s supervisor, Melissa, would normally have taken him, but other out of town holiday plans had Kerry taking custody of Boone until arrangements were finalized for him to go to relatives. Traveling at night and through the Sumter National Forest on the way to her apartment had Kerry replaying her worst nightmare from her youth. But it was the huge vehicle coming closer and picking up speed that quickly drew her attention. Why were they trying to ram her car over the edge of the road? She can’t out run them. Speed on this curvy road is very dangerous, but she sped up to almost twice the speed limit. OH NO! Her car got hit and it slid off the road heading towards Broken Branch River, which is roaring with fast currents and with full banks.
Noah is doing the last part of this work duties before checking out for his long-awaited three-week vacation to hike part of Appalachian Trail. His love of the forest and exploring it came from his dad. Hearing some horrible noises, he headed towards them to find a car in the water sinking fast with what appeared to be a woman and a young child inside. Working fast, but safely, he works to extract them from the car before it was to sink further. Thinking they were now safe up on solid ground disappeared when they were shot at from above. Can this man that she’d just met save them once again?
In the darkness of night and the skills of Noah and his forest knowledge, they were able to get away. Why are they after this woman and child? When Noah finds out the identity of the child, some light beings to shine on the situation. Boone doesn’t seem to know anything. Who are these people and what do they want? After more attempts on their lives, it seems that they are will to kill for it. Can being in the forest with Noah have her seeing the forest in a different light than the horrible memories of her one and only family camp out in a forest when she was a child? Can Noah keep them all safe? When he’s starts questioning some of his fellow rangers, who can he trust? Will his faith and respect be shattered for those he thought he could trust? The one person he knows he can trust, his brother, is out of town on his honeymoon. Will Noah’s recent past history with a woman have him fearful of commitment? Will Kerry’s built in distrust of people and unwillingness to open up to any possibility of marriage be shattered when she has to learning to trust Noah completely. Is it true that opposite can attract? Can a small child be the catalyst like a magnet pulling to opposite towards each other? Will fear turn them away from love or is love worth fighting for, changing one’s vision, turning around and running towards it?
CHRISTMAS FOREST AMBUSH is an amazing story expertly written. The character’s background and their present condition will grab your attention while one sweet little boy tugs at your heart. The suspense and danger will keep you turning pages in order to see how they keep getting out of dangers way safely and to find out what the criminals are so desperate to get their hands on. Along the way, views of one another as well as some fears start to change proving that feelings aren’t constructed in stone and emotions can differ if handled with gentle care and willingness. Kerry Johnson writes a fabulous story of danger, suspense, family, and romance wrapping it all with a ribbon of faith in the most delightful way.
Loved the quote inside the cover, which also is referred to in the story. It’s the perfect quote for this story. “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee when my hear is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter to me, and a stronger tower from the enemy.” Psalm 61:2-3
CHRISTMAS FOREST AMBUSH without a doubt is definitely a FIVE STAR book! I highly recommend it to everyone.
I receive a copy of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.
I enjoyed the 5 year old Boone character in this one. I knew for which object the villains were searching.
The story could be categorized as a romance. I am concerned that this couple only knows how to relate to each other during crisis, rather than what the other is like under more normal circumstances. They don't really know each other all that well. As another reviewer said, they are still in the infatuation stage.
I do allow more sentimentality for a Christmas read than I usually like, but there wasn't much about Christmas in this one. They just took a brief break in all the chasing to enjoy a home with a Christmas tree, but beyond that, there weren't any Christmas themes.
As a hiker, I enjoyed the emphasis on hiking and the forests in this book.
At first I enjoyed the thrilling adventure of this one, with the car accident and being trapped in the car in water, and in the trek across the wilderness. But as improbable scenario after improbable scenario passed by, I lost my interest in the adrenalin rush without much thought.
I think I worried about their wet clothes and hypothermia more than they did. (It was never fully explained how they avoided hypothermia.) And Noah crawled over broken glass without thinking to pad it with his jacket. If he'd had at least multiple concussions, if not outright brain damage, why was he the one who was cheerfully waking early and cooking everyone breakfast? I did not find that realistic at all. Too many unrealistic jump-scares, but I realize that most people are not looking for realism in their reading.
I did not guess all the whodunits. We were not really given enough clues, beyond Noah's unsubstantiated guess early on, and it's clearly a suspense novel and not a mystery because *** SPOILER *** the first person he thought of was guilty, without any plot twists in the mystery department.
But there was at least some thought by the characters involved in this story.
The main characters learn to trust God through various disasters, something that we should all hope to learn. If the characters are anything like me, it's something we need to learn over and over again.
Perhaps it's a dark thought, but it seemed like they were always scrambling for life, rather than learning to face death with a sense of inner peace. And what happens when they inevitably lose their health or some other difficulty steals life from them? Do they lose their faith then, having only placed it in God for this world and not the next? We want a faith that can go the distance with us, throughout all our lives, and even into our deaths.
"If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied." -1 Corinthians 15:19
Paul was speaking of persecution, but it can appy here also.
I'm not saying these characters should've given up trying to live and seeing God's provision in that. Instead, I'm saying that they shouldn't have their faith rest on being able to live, or having their loved ones live.
Also, there's a difference in an epiphany involving a sudden understanding of some aspect of God (for example, His trustworthiness) and being a Christian. Being a Christian is more than just having an epiphany. Being a Christian involves both understanding Jesus' sacrifice for our sins, and following Him with our actions. Apart from the consideration of God's trustworthiness, we don't know what, if anything, these characters actually believe.
Favorite quote: "He knew his work was part of God’s purpose for him. Help others while maintaining God’s creation."
I have been consuming a lot of Love Inspired Suspense novels lately due to the fact that they are quick and satisfying reads with strong characters and clean content. Christmas Forest Ambush is no exception, and is one of my favorites in this series so far.
The action is swift and immediate, instantly plunging Lucy and Boone into a run for their lives from an unknown pursuer. Lucy is a social worker who has temporary custody of Boone, a young boy whose parents were attacked, with one dead and the other in a coma. Lucy does not like the forest (a girl after my own heart) but she is willing to fight her fears to protect young Boone from danger as they are attacked while driving through Sumter National Forest. Noah, a forest ranger who loves the woods, comes upon the pair and is thankfully able and willing to help them run from the danger.
The characters are truly what sets this novel apart from the rest of the Love Inspired Suspense novels. I cannot even begin to imagine the emotions that are coursing through poor Boone. To have your father murdered in cold blood, and your mother in a coma fighting for her life, all while being chased by someone that wants to harm or kill you…that is heavy! Then factor in his young age and it is almost too unbelievable to fathom. What I loved the most about this novel was that the three main players are not related in any form, yet they all have this automatic protectiveness for one another. With the selfishness that abounds in our culture I found this fact immensely satisfying.
Though you feel like you’re catching this story in the middle of the narrative I never once felt lost. My mind whirled with the question, “Why?” a lot, wondering who would do something like this to innocent people, especially with one of them being such a young child. These questions spurred me on, to the point that I had a hard time putting this novel down.
I truly enjoyed this novel so much and love how the author was able to paint such a vivid narrative that instantly drew me in and kept me riveted until the end. The thread of faith throughout is uplifting and the ending is satisfying. It is the perfect ending to this clean suspenseful read.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
Christmas Forest Ambush is a fast-paced suspense novel that you’re going to love getting lost in! It’s an amazing read! I’m a huge fan of Love Inspired Suspense novels and this one is an amazing one. They’re all great suspense novels that keep you on the edge of your seat until you read the last chapter.
If you’re a fan of suspense novels with some romance you’re going to love this novel!
THIS BOOK IS PART OF A SERIES. You, however, do not have to read the other books to enjoy this one. If you do read the rest of the series before his you’ll have more backstory on our main character Noah and his family. But, if you don’t read them you can still thoroughly enjoy this novel.
Other characters in the novel are the adorable and sweet Boone. He’s just a little boy but his family was targeted while he was home. His mom is fighting for her life in a hospital and his dad is dead. He also requires some meds for a condition he has(not gonna tell you what). Oh, but he’s a fighter and adorable!
And then our main female character is Lucy. She’s in charge of Boone until they can locate either a suitable family or his own family to come take care of him until his mom is out of the hospital. But on their way to her house from court, they’re targeted and run off the road. Once she’s in the river she’s not sure what to do or how they’ll survive. Until Noah comes to the rescue.
From there the suspense just keeps piling on and you’ll find yourself trying to figure out who is after them and why. Plus trying to help them outrun the bad guys. Just keep rooting for the good guys and giving them advice along the way. Amazingly well written with wonderful characters that become your best friends. I can’t wait for more to come in the series!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from JustRead Publicity Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. A friend (MH) sent me this book in a box of books. I will likely pass it on to another friend (AC) whose mom enjoys reading too.
The main characters are interesting and I didn't suspect all the "villains" who were involved (revealed at the end). The basic plot is that the "bad guys" are after Boone (a child) because he has something they want. I have to guess that the "bad guys" had no idea what form it took because one of them had access to the item at a point just before the start of the story and from the sounds of it could have easily swiped it at that time.
There's a lot of suspenseful events within the plot.
I always think it is hard to do justice to both a suspense story and a romance in the page length of Love Inspired Suspense and this book is no exception. Lucy and Noah meet (or at least haven't spent much time together prior to meeting in this book) when Noah sees Lucy's car end up in the water. The rest of the book seems to take place in a 1-2 week period during which they are often running for their lives (high adrenaline) and during which they have to get to know each other. In fiction, where you can make characters do what you want them to do and be who you want them to be--of course, happily ever after is possible. In real life, I'm not so sure that same formula works. Can you become close to someone in a short time? Yes. Do stressful events often reveal a true character in a person? Yes. But is 1-2 weeks really enough time to fall in "forever" love or is it still the infatuation stage?
The book has them engaged 11 months or so later--which is more realistic than some plots in this series that have people married after 6 months.
I did appreciate that the author didn't have me thinking "if they would only talk truthfully with each other, they'd be so much better off." There was only a brief period of that before they cleared the air with each other.
CHRISTMAS FOREST AMBUSH is an inspirational romantic suspense set a few weeks before Christmas. A little boy, his foster parent, and a park ranger find themselves at the end of a gun as a criminal ring tries to silence evidence. Their journey takes them through the forest, mountains, and an old mining area as they try to escape the danger. Recommended to those who are fans of the Love Inspired Suspense line and light inspirational romantic suspense.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of this book as well as the characters. They're facing quite a lot and they don't know who their enemies are, but they stick together and keep each other safe as they struggle to stay alive. I loved the ruggedness of the landscape as the mountains are one of my happy places as is hiking. It's an overall quick read with inspirational elements throughout and a romance that slowly builds as the characters spend more time together.
My major complaint would be that I had to suspend belief a lot. There were several things that didn't make sense or work for me in the plausibility of some characters' actions and the continuous cat and mouse chase.
In the end, was it what I wished for? Overall, a quick, enjoyable read from this line of books.

If you want non-stop action and lots of surprises, you won’t want to miss Kerry Johnson’s new release, Christmas Forest Ambush. The suspense begins right away and doesn’t let up until the very end.
Kerry paints such a wonderful description of the forest that you will feel like you are running through the trees and dodging bullets. You will quickly develop a kinship with the main characters. Social worker Lucy Taylor is strong, independent, and dedicated to her young charge, Boone. Ranger Noah Holt rescues them after a car crash and is determined to protect them even if it costs him his life.
As every hope of escaping danger and the evil men pursuing them is dashed, Lucy and Noah must devise new plans for reaching safety on the spur of the moment. I loved their resourcefulness, their trust in each other, and their commitment to Boone. And the clever little boy shows a lot of spunk of his own!
Ms. Johnson does a fine job of combining the elements of suspense, romance, and faith. Her characters are likable and believable, and the fast-paced plot will leave you breathless but turning pages for more. I highly recommend Christmas Forest Ambush to anyone who loves a good story. Kudos, Kerry Johnson!!
Christmas Forest Ambush is written by Kerry Johnson. This book starts out with action and didn’t let up. Lucy Taylor is a social worker who has been assigned five-year-old Boone Harrington. Boone’s been through a lot in the last few days. His father was murdered, his mother is in a coma. Everyone involved with his case felt it was necessary to protect him.
Lucy and Boone are traveling through Sumter National Forest back to Lucy’s home. Suddenly someone runs Lucy's car off the road. Lucy finds herself turning to Ranger Noah Holt for protection. It becomes clear that those that are responsible will not stop until Boone is eliminated.
Lucy and Noah try to outsmart the gun traffickers. They work well together. Their kindness, compassion and patience with a 5 year old whose whole life has changed was so heartwarming. Boone was adorable and caused some drama by just being a 5 year old boy. The author wrote such great detail into all the action scenes where I felt that I was watching everything unfold in front of me.
Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Christmas Forest Ambush by Kerry Johnson is a suspenseful story. I enjoyed getting to know Lucy Taylor, Noah Holt, and young Boone Harrington. I felt bad for the little boy whose father was murdered and mother is in a coma. Now someone seems determined to eliminate Boone and his social worker, Lucy. Lucy and Noah need to work together to keep Boone safe from the killers. The pair are kind to the five-year-old even when his actions (from not following directions) put him in danger. I liked the author’s engaging writing style. I was quickly drawn into the story and all the action kept things lively. It was an intriguing mystery, and I had a good time solving it. The author captured the setting of Sumter National Forest. I could envision the beauty of the forest as well as the feel the frigid temperatures. Faith is nicely incorporated into the story. God had a reason for bringing Lucy and Noah together. Both Lucy and Noah have issues they need to work through. It may be that they can help each other. Lucy and Boone will need Noah if they are to survive their time in the forest. I like that the romance was the slow burn type (especially since there was a child present). My favorite quote is from the author, “The Bible reminds us God is trustworthy and faithful. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Christmas Forest Ambush is a story that will keep you up until the wee hours.
This book started off tense, suspenseful, and dangerous and it never stopped. With a sweet, scared little boy and a social worker we find ourselves in a fight for their lives. From dark, forest roads, to a bridge and river, to the forest and beyond. A kindly ranger joins them and we see hints of an ongoing mystery saga that most likely took place in previous books in a series. The medical aspect was a great suspenseful addition to this child in danger book. The romance was a slow burn with a heroine who had to undergo some change. But, wow, were they put through the wringer! Just when I was starting to breathe a sigh of relief, another wave hit, and then another!! Constant action and troubles. It was a great read that kept me on my toes.
I received an ARC of this book via #JustReadTours and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Five-year-old Boone's District Attorney father has been murdered and his mother lies in a medically induced coma in ICU. Boone also has, unknowingly, something the killers want. He's now in the care of Social Worker Lucy.
Lucy hates driving through Sumter National Forest at night, but it's the only way to get Boone home to her apartment. While driving through the forest, someone rams her vehicle from behind, pushing them off the road. They are stopped on the edge of a cliff then the car plunges into the river below.
Noah is a park ranger and he hears the sound of the car falling into the river and races to rescue whoever was in the vehicle. Now they are on the run through the forest and uncertain who they can trust.

I love reading Love Inspired Suspense books because they have interesting suspense plots with engaging characters that are free of bad language and graphic violence. This story pulled me in from the very first chapter with lots of intense action and intrigue. The main characters Lucy and Noah were great, relatable characters who end up working together to protect Boone who may be the key to finding his parent's killer. I enjoyed reading this amazing book from start to finish. Once you start reading you wont want to stop! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions and views expressed are my own.
Social worker Lucy Taylor agrees to take care of 5-year-old Boone Harrington after his father is murdered and his mother sustains injuries in the attack. But while they are driving to her apartment, she is run off the road and ends up in a river. Ranger Noah Holt has been out in the woods working when he finds the two and rescues them. But now they are in a race for their life as they try to outrun gun runners who want no witnesses to their crimes. Will Noah be able to protect Ludy and Boone and find out who is behind these deadly attacks? This is a fast-paced suspense novel that will leave you on the edge of your seat!
Christmas Forest Ambush is non-stop action. Social worker, Lucy Taylor, does her best to keep 5 year old Boone Harrington safe after his father is murdered and his mother ends up in the hospital. Luckily, ranger Noah Holt is in Sumter National Forest and he helps them escape. This story is full of danger, twists and turns, and the hint of a romance. It is Love Inspired Suspense at its best. I enjoyed reading it.
Excellent suspense novel. I was hooked from the beginning through the end. Stayed up until 2am, to finish it. Well written. Solid characters. Lovely Christian background. The main characters prayed for the Lord’s guidance and protection throughout the book. No swearing, sex, or even kissing. A nice change to what is commonly termed ‘romance’. I’ll be looking for more from this author.
Oh, my goodness. Non-stop action. I had to finish it so I could breath. My first book by this author, and she knows how to write suspense. It should come with a warning label--be prepared to read and do nothing else. If you like snow, mountains, and deadly peril, run to get this one!
Christmas Forest Ambush by Kerry Johnson! Another great story with wonderful characters! Will keep you reading and turning the pages with suspense you won't want to put it down until the end! I highly recommend this book! I was given a compilatory copy and this is my own honest opinion!
