When Constable Jenny Williams arrived in Coober Pedy, the heat assaulted her when she left the airport's air conditioning. January probably wasn't the best month to arrive in the Australian outback. She'd requested the posting because she was searching for her aunt and cousin, who'd been missing for almost a decade. But she was keeping that quiet for the time being. Being the only female cop in a station of males would be challenging, she knew that. But when an old miner fell down one of the old shafts, his rescue brought news of bones lying at the bottom of the shaft.
Jenny and her colleagues followed the small amount of evidence, getting the forensics from Adelaide to sift through the soil. Penny was thorough, and Jenny knew she'd found a friend in her. When results from Adelaide came through as a likely murder, the commanding officer of the station, McKenzie, had been sure it would be classed as death by misadventure. Jenny was determined to discover how the person died, and if it was murder, who the culprit was. But could she do it? Secrets had a way of coming out, but someone didn't want them known...
Her Buried Bones is the first in the Opal Fields series by Aussie author Fiona Tarr and I enjoyed it very much. The cruel and debilitating heat of the outback is well on show in this book, and Jenny is a tough, determined and clever cop. I'm looking forward to the 2nd in the series, in the not too distant future. Recommended.
This was my first Fiona Tarr book but it won’t be the last I am looking forward to many more and luckily I have some to catch up one, Constable Jenny Williams has requested a transfer to Cooper Pedy she wants answers to a family mystery, her missing aunt and cousin and the last place they were known to be is Cooper Pedy, will she get her answers?
The heat is the first thing that rocks Jenny when she arrives and the red dust, her first impressions when arriving at the police station is that she is going to find it tough to break through the ways of the station run by men, she decides to keep her reasons for being here to herself for a while and when the remains of a body are found in the bottom of a mine shaft soon Jenny throws herself into the investigation, it appears to be a murder and Jenny is arguing already with her new boss.
They all soon learn that Jenny will not give up on what she believes and with the help of the forensic scientist Penny they are building a case and when the cop she replaced arrives in town Jenny will do whatever it takes to revel the killer.
I thoroughly enjoyed this crime mystery, I loved Jenny and her determination to get the answers and the way she stood up to her boss, will she get more answers about her aunt and cousin I look forward to more in this series to get the answer. There are some fabulous characters in this one and MS Tarr has describes Cooper Pedy so well I almost felt the heat. I do highly recommend this one to any reader who loves a good mystery.
Her Buried Bones by Aussie author Fiona Tarr is the book in the Opal Fields series and I can already tell this is going to be a great series. The descriptions throughout this novel were so good you felt like you were right there with the characters experiencing the Cooper Pedy heat. The plot had a good amount of mystery which had me intrigued and I was eager to find out how it would end. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m so pleased that I’ve found a new author I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Recommended.
Omg, what a slog. No suspense, rather uninteresting characters, and the ending was really not worth it. Plus the “villain” behaved completely unbelievably. 🙄
The only reason I give an extra ⭐️ is the location of the story. The small mining town in the extremely harsh Australian outback was actually fascinating. Too bad there was not more description of the locale (or more character development, or a more believable, suspenseful plot 🥱).
Her Buried Bones is book one in the Opal Fields series by Fiona Tarr. Nine years ago, Jenny Williams's Aunt and cousin disappeared while holidaying around Coober Pedy. Now a Constable in the South Australian Police Force, when the opportunity arises for her to work in Coober Pedy, she jumps at it. However, on her first day, she became involved in the murder case of a woman found at the bottom of a mine shaft. Will this be the case that will end her career in the South Australian Police, or will it stamp her place in Coober Pedy? The readers of Her Buried Bones will continue to follow Jenny Williams to discover what happens.
Her Buried Bones is the first book I read by Fiona Tarr, and I found it fantastic. I will read other books in this series. I engaged with the story and characters from the first page. I love Fiona Tarr's portrayal of her characters and how they interact throughout this book. Her Buried Bones is well-written and researched. I like Fiona Tarr's description of the settings of Her Buried Bones, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
The readers of Her Buried Bones will learn about living in Coober Pedy. Also, the readers of Her Buried Bones will learn about law enforcement corruption.
When an author can’t even be bothered to get the name of the highway that runs right past Coober Pedy correct two stars are all I can give. It’s the STUART HIGHWAY not the Sturt Highway.
There were loads of punctuation and weird capitalisation mistakes.

Having lived in Alice Springs and other places in outback NT/SA for 20+ years, I have more than a passing connection to Coober Pedy - worked there in various capacities for the NT Aboriginal Interpreter Service as part of the Tri-State Justice program between NT-SA-WA. I know a few cops from there, a bit about the justice system, and of course, the town itself.
I was looking for a new mystery series and I found an absolute gem!! Fiona Tarr is definitely a new to me author with a lot of potential. Her Outback, based Aussie police mystery was just awesome, fast-paced, gripping and engaging. I’m excited to head straight to book 2.
Fantastic read. Set in the Australian outback, this is the story of a young police woman sent out to Coober Pedy mining town. She's there not only because she was transferred, but because she's looking to solve her own family mystery.
Once again I am surprised to see such a book rated so highly. Not sure why since the plot was weak, the ending was disappointing and nothing much really happened all throughout the book.
Great characters and setting for a fast paced crime thriller that is hard to put down once you start reading.
Considering not a lot happens on the crime front in this former thriving opal mining town, Jenny Williams finds herself knee deep in a mysterious death in her first week on the job. There are reservations amongst the existing police force about why this bright young constable wanted to be stationed in this remote area of the outback but Jenny works hard to gain their trust and acceptance.
There are hidden depths to this dusty and sleepy town and not all are down disused opal mines. Families in the area also have experienced unsolved tragedies over the years and as Jenny gets to know the key local players she begins to wonder how her own family mystery might be connected.
As the clues and action intensifies, it becomes clear that someone does not want Jenny digging into this current case and will do anything to stop any further investigation by any means possible.
I certainly was engaged from beginning to end and I am looking forward to the next two in the series and a fourth due out in July. Highly recommended.
IT'S NEVER BEEN EASY BEING A WOMAN AND TODAY ITS EVEN HARDER JENNY IS HARD WORKING AND SMART. I DID FIGURE OUT WHO-DONE-IT BEFORE THE REVEAL AT ALMOST THE VERY ENDING OF THE BOOK. ;D
Her Buried Bones: An Australian Outback Crime Thriller (Opal Fields Book 1), my second read from author Fiona Tarr. Very different from my first read from her, Destiny of Kings, based on the Books of Samuel from The Bible and the characters of Saul & David, the book was an enjoyable fictionalized account of the same. Although a bit stilted the mystery storyline carried me through the book. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Wow. This was my first Fiona Tarr novel and I was hooked from the start. Our heroine Jenny is awesome. She is natural and realistic. The plot was strong and it kept you guessing. I loved the descriptive writing as it gave a fantastic visual of the hot, unforgiving terrain in which the novel is set. A superb ending to a great novel. I can’t wait for the next one in the series.
Setting: Coober Pedy, South Australia; modern day. Into the searing heat of South Australian opal mining town Coober Pedy comes Constable Jenny Williams - a transfer she has requested in order to investigate the disappearance of her aunt and cousin nine years earlier, having last sent her a postcard from that very town. Now, Jenny plans to operate somewhat under the radar in order to investigate their disappearance. But before she can really start her enquiries, on her first call to a mine where a man has fallen down the shaft, the recovery team also discover the skeleton of a woman - a woman who had supposedly left town some time before. Forensic investigator Penny, with whom Jenny soon strikes up a good friendship, reports later that the woman appears to have been strangled. But Jenny's boss, Sergeant Mackenzie, seems determined to have the case deemed death by misadventure..... This was an excellent first book in a series and from an author who is new to me. You could really feel the heat and the isolated location where the book was set - a great tonic when reading it with frost on the ground and snow in the air! The characters were excellent and the ending was not really a complete conclusion but just a ' more to come' introduction to the second book, where no doubt some of the unresolved mysteries of this book will continue to be investigated by Jenny and her colleagues. So, looking forward to reading the next in the series - and must remember to take my Akubra hat next time to keep the sun off! - 8.5/10.
Exciting and authentic outback thriller - great read Add a photo or video Shoppers find images and videos more helpful than text alone.

Add a written review Her Buried Bones by Fiona Tarr
I loved this crime thriller set in the Australian outback. I finished reading in a day. This is fast moving with a body discovered on Jenny's first day as the new Constable in town. Genuine rounded characters. nice twists and the current murder tied up. Tightly plotted, cleanly written and no padding. The cold case of Jenny's missing aunt and cousin still unsolved. So on to the next book.
Fiona Tarr has captured the atmosphere of Coober Pedy perfectly. I have lived and worked in the outback, visiting both Coober Pedy and William Creek. I can vouch for the heat, the dust and the authenticity of life in a small mining town.
Jenny is a new cop in an isolated out of the was small town in Australia. Her mission is to find answers about her missing Aunt and Cousin, who were last seen 9 years ago. Her first day in, bones of another local young woman are found buried on an abandoned opal mine. Its a fast read with nothing but entertaining suspense and funny encounters. I was hooked from the first page. There is no time to be bored in this book....its a must read.
I received a free copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Excellent new series starter from Fiona Tarr. The premise is good, the action very realistic, overall a good mystery. The storyline moves quickly. The heroine is the main protoginst, with a strong sense of justice. She takes an assignment to a remote outback town for finding out what happened to her aunt and cousin, basically attempt to resolve a dead case. Only issue was the end comes quickly leaving us wondering about what will happen next in the quest to find out what happened...
Penny is on a mission to find out what had happened to her missing aunt and cousin. She had moved to the opal fields, the last place they were seen, as a police constable. The thrills began on her first day on duty. The scenery is described in a way that brings it to life, both the beauty, and the challenges. Great characters, with good interactions.
An excellent crime thriller with a good storyline and an outstanding female main character. A remote outback Australian location for this enjoyable fast paced story. Contains plenty of suspense and several twists. Highly recommended start to a new series.
This is a fast paced action packed thrill ride through the outback. Jenny is on a mission to find out what happened to her aunt and cousin. Missing for nine years. Her first day there a girl is found murdered? Who and why was she killed. There are twists and turns that make a great story.
Absolutely perfect for what it is! A shorter mystery/crime book with a good amount of plot twists I found this such a fun enjoyable and ready read! The first books sets up so well for the rest of the series which I am looking forward to reading!
Loved this thriller, a new cop in the outback with a mission to find the truth about her Aunt and Cousin also her best friend. But unfortunately, for Jenny on her 1st day the body of another girl (young lady) had been found and week it looks suspicious.
This is a fast read full paced with something all the way through no filling ins just the story and you get to meet the characters and get a feel for each one you need to.
So short review all you need to know if this is great well worth the read and am glad I found it.
It took a little bit to get used to this one in the accents in the narration. The premise seems over the top. Jenny is a cop who takes a transfer from the city to the outback because her aunt and cousin went missing 9 years ago and she wants to find them.
It seems odd to me that she would think after all these years she could find them. Well, perhaps find them dead. Also Jenny is downright sassy with her boss. She may be right about the bones found but she needs to continue finding evidence not mouth off. The small station where she works doesn't seem to have much of a schedule or regular work. I was able to guess the killer quickly, which is unusual for me.
If Jenny digs into some cold cases like her aunt/cousin being missing perhaps the station will be busier. This first book was short and I own the second in ebook so it will be interesting to see if they let her do a bit more on various cold cases. I did enjoy this one.
A very slow beginning turned into a really good book. The first few chapters were pretty slow while all the characters were being introduced. You get to know the characters that live in Cooper Pedi and the real reason the main character accepted a job there. When the body is found the story grabs your attention and as the investigation progresses you meet more characters and sense a future love interest for the main character. I’m looking forward to the next books and getting to know the characters better and finding out what happened in the other cases.
