Michael has travelled widely - to Africa, Japan, the Arctic Circle, China and Malaysia, the Himalayas, Siberia and New Zealand - to research his books. "I do a lot of research when I'm travelling - I find it thrilling to discover the particular 'art' of different landscapes and work them into a book. But I find I have to travel by myself, otherwise I'm constantly getting involved in other people's impressions of a place... I try to be invisible when I'm travelling, so I tend to listen in on conversations rather than participate in them - I just want to look and draw."

This is a poignant story about soldiers arranging a football match between the opposing trenches. The water colour pictures are a delight. Children who are old enough to watch war movies will begin to think about the sadness of war. There are also notes for older children about the history. Both of Michael Foreman's uncles died in WW1.

War Game follows Will and his brother and friends as they join the army to fight in the First World War. The story follows Will's journey to the front. There are elements of truth within the story, with side illustrations and pieces of information. The illustrations are simple but compliment the story well.
It would be good for exploring what life was like for soldiers in WW1, especially the truce on Christmas Day.

War Game By Michael Foreman
War Game chronicles the story of four friends, from the football pitch in Suffolk to the trenches of the Western front. Young and impressionable; Will, Lacey, Billy and Freddy join the army excited by the prospect of adventure in a foreign land. This is a moving story and a painful reminder of the heroism of the young soldiers who fought and died in First World War. It is also a wonderfully human piece about the sense of sympathy that grew between the two opposing forces as they suffered together on the front line.
Foreman manages to capture the mood of the time brilliantly, through photographs of contemporary propaganda posters and illustrations documenting the boys journey. Their enthusiasm to enlist is characteristic of thousands of young men in Britain in 1914, and is what makes it so powerful when they arrive in the bleak landscape of No Man's Land, so tragically unaware of the appalling conditions that awaited them. Months later, in the mud and rain of the trenches. With the continuous bombardment of shells and gunfire as well as suffering the freezing weather, the boys become all too familiar with the horrors of war.
On Christmas eve, the guns stop. Lights appear from the German trenches and the sound of carol-singing breaks through the silence. The next day the troops from both sides emerge unarmed from their trenches and join each other on the 'halfway line' of No Man's Land. Foreman then beautifully depicts the infamous story of the football match, that unexpectedly erupted on the battlefield. Boys at war, no longer enemies, unified for just one day by something as basic as a football.
This book offers the reader an excellent overview of a soldiers experiences during the Great War, from basic training, the journey to and arrival at the front lines, construction of the trenches, daily duties and living conditions, through to the full on conflict with the enemy. The illustrations depict everything in exquisite detail: the aeroplanes, the uniforms, the weaponry and bleak, unforgiving landscape of the battlefield.
Reading this book in conjunction to with WW1 lessons would be very beneficial to pupils as it would help provide a vivid context to the topic. Lessons could include; comprehension exercises such as drawing and labelling trenches, designing propaganda posters or war poetry. Bringing in additional First World War props, would further aid learning and offer a visual kinaesthetic element to the lessons.
What Michael Foreman is able to do so effectively is work the historical facts into his narrative without disrupting the pace and excitement of the plot. It simply continues on seamlessly to is poignant, heartfelt and tragic conclusion.

War Game by Michael Foreman depicts the spontaneous truce that took place on Christmas Day, 1914 on the Western front during the Great War. This beautifully illustrated book begins with 4 young boys playing soccer in Suffolk. They are craving some adventure, an opportunity to travel and so decide to join the fight with the assumption they will be home before Christmas. The author beautifully portrays the innocence of these young boys on their first London bus driving across the French countryside through the ruins of their devastated surroundings when we see them compare the flares used to illuminate the enemy to fireworks. The four boys enter the trenches and are quickly moved to the front line. Once filled with enthusiasm, the boys are now faced with gunfire, freezing winter conditions and thoughts of home. Christmas Day sees a welcome truce between the two sides and the enemy is humanised as the German front line emerge from the trenches to partake in a friendly game of soccer. As they return to their trenches Christmas wishes are swapped. This jovial atmosphere is quickly quashed when the Germans are replaced with Prussian soldiers and a heavy gunfire attack follows. During a counter attack Will, one of the boys is shot and dies in No Mans Land. Foreman accurately depicts the brutality of war and creates empathy within the reader for all sides involved. Throughout the book he includes actual war propaganda, popular at the time to encourage men to enlist. This book could of course be used cross-curricularly in History as his writing and watercolour illustrations are immensely detailed, depicting the landscape, uniforms, aircrafts, riffles and trenches. I think this book would certainly develop a child's curiosity and imagination and perhaps even lead to discussions over the issue of war and indeed be useful in creative writing. I would suggest this book for Year 6 due to difficult vocabulary pertaining to war which students may not be familiar with. It is a beautiful book and I would highly recommend it for students.

Lastenkirjakuvittajan parhaiten tutuksi tulleen Michael Foremanin kuvakirja "War Game" (Pavilion, 2014) ilmestyi ensimmäistä kertaa jo useampi vuosikymmen sitten, mutta ensimmäisen maailmansodan satavuotismuisteloiden vuoksi siitä on otettu nyt uusi painos. Ja ihan syystä, sillä kyseessä on pienimuotoinen mestariteos, joka toimii myös pienimuotoisena matkana Euroopan historiaan: vesivärikuvitusta tukevat autenttiset lehtileikkeet, propagandajulisteet ja muu aikalaismateriaali.
Kuten kaikki historiankirjansa tarkkaan lukeneet tietävät, syntyi länsirintamalla epävirallinen aselepo ensimmäisenä sotajouluna 1914. Saksalaiset ja englantilaiset nousivat juoksuhaudoistaan, tapasivat toisiaan ei-kenenkään maalla, vaihtoivat lahjoja ja pelasivat keskenään jalkapalloa. Ja juuri tähän hetkeen kirjan tapahtumat sijoittuvat.
Surullisen ja pasifistisen tarinan päähenkilö on jalkapalloa rakastava nuorukainen nimeltä Will. Both beautiful and heartbreakingly sad, this lavishly illustrated story reminds us of how similar we all are and in doing so brings home the deep tragedy of war.

Quiet, emotional children’s book that explores the realities of (World War 1) through the eyes of young soldiers.
Knowing the story is based on the author’s own uncles makes it feel especially personal and sincere. The inclusion of the Christmas Truce is one of the most memorable moments, highlighting humanity even in the middle of war.
The illustrations are beautifully done and add emotional depth to the story, they help set the mood and make the historical setting accessible for younger readers. I also appreciated the historical notes, which give useful context.
Sadly the book is very short and quite simple, which means the characters aren’t deeply developed. While this works well for its intended audience, it left me wishing for more time to connect with the boys and their individual personalities.

📕 ধ্বংসাত্মক যুদ্ধের আড়ালে এমন অনেক ঘটনা ঘটে যায়, যা সচরাচর আমরা জানতে পারি না৷ রাজায় রাজায় যুদ্ধ হয়, ইতিহাস রচিত হয়, অথচ উলুখাগড়ার জীবনে যে শত সহস্র গাথা তৈরি হয়, তা অনায়াসে মিলিয়ে যায় ইতিহাসের অন্ধকারে।
১৯১৪ সাল। প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধের দামামা বাজতে শুরু করেছে। ইংল্যন্ডের কান্ট্রিসাইড সাফোক-এ চারজন স্কুলপড়ুয়ার স্বপ্ন তখন বিদেশ ভ্রমণ। তবে সেই সুযোগের জন্য দরকার বিপুল অর্থ, এদিকে বয়সও বেশি নয়। ফুটবল খেলে দিন কাটে তাদের। উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি, লেসি ও তাদের বন্ধুরা মিলে চামড়ার ফুটবল নিয়ে কাদামাঠে দাপাদাপি করে বেড়ায়।
এমন সময়ে তাদের কানে আসে ব্রিটেনের রাজা নিজের দেশের প্রতি কর্তব্যপালনের জন্য তরুণদের খোঁজ করছেন। সামান্য কিছু প্রশিক্ষণের পর তাদের পাঠানো হবে ফ্রান্সে, সেখানে এক দু মাস ডিউটি পালনের পর ক্রিস্টমাসের সময় ছুটি হয়ে যাবে।
চার বন্ধু দোনামনায় পড়ে যায় এই খবর শুনে। ফ্রান্স দেশটা কেমন তাদের জানা নেই, শুধু গল্পই শুনেছে বাবা দাদুদের কাছে। এ তো আর রক্তক্ষয়ী যুদ্ধ নয়, দেশের ইউনিফর্ম পরে প্রাকযুদ্ধের কিছু নিয়ম পালন করা, আর সঙ্গে বিদেশভ্রমণ। এমন সুযোগ কত বার আর আসে!
উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি ও লেসি মিলে শহরের টাউন হলে গিয়ে নিজেদের নাম লেখায়। শহরবাসী ড্রাম ও বাঁশি বাজিয়ে তাদের সম্বর্ধনা জানায়।
কয়েক দিনের প্রশিক্ষণের পর তারা ভেসে পড়ে ফ্রান্সের উদ্দেশে। তটভূমিতে জাহাজ থেকে নেমে পায়ে হেঁটে আর ঘোড়ায় টানা গাড়িতে চেপে তারা যখন গন্তব্যে এসে পৌঁছায়, তখন তাদের সমস্ত মোহ ভেঙে যায় এক লহমায়। দলনেতাকে অনুসরণ ক'রে চারিদিকে ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে থাকা লাশ ও ধ্বংসস্তূপের মধ্যে দিয়ে মাথা নিচু করে ওদের এগিয়ে যেতে হয়। রক্তবর্ণ আকাশের বুক চিরে কালো ধোঁয়ার কুণ্ডলী দেখা যায় দূরে, সঙ্গ কানফাটানো গ্রেনেড আর গুলির শব্দ। এ তো কোনও সাধারণ ডিউটি নয়, এ তো সরাসরি শত্রুপক্ষের মোকাবিলা। সম্মুখসমরে প্রাণ হাতে নিয়ে বেঁচে ফিরতে পারবে তো ওরা?
সরু অন্ধকার ট্রেঞ্চের মধ্যে এসে দাঁড়ায় ওরা চারজন, সঙ্গে আরও অসংখ্য যুবক। ব্রিটেনের প্রত্যন্ত সব গ্রাম থেকে এক বুক স্বপ্ন নিয়ে নরকের মাঝে এসে দাঁড়িয়েছে সবাই। সামনে বিস্তৃত নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ড, তারপর জার্মান শিবিরের ট্রেঞ্চ। মুহুর্মুহু গ্রেনেড উড়ে আসছে সেখান থেকে, কিছু পড়ছে মাঝের ফাঁকা জায়গায়, বাকিগুলিতে লেখা থাকছে এক একজন সৈন্যের নাম। মুহূর্তে ছিন্নভিন্ন হয়ে যাচ্ছে তাদের দেহ, পড়ে থাকছে পুড়ে যাওয়া জামার টুকরো, মাথার হ্যাট, বা আধপোড়া ডায়রির পাতা।
যুদ্ধের পরিবেশ দিন কাটতে থাকে।হিমশীতল ডিসেম্বর এগিয়ে আসে, অথচ যুদ্ধের আঁচ থামার নাম নেয় না। বরফাবৃত ট্রেঞ্চে ভীত সন্ত্রস্ত্র মুহূর্ত কাটে
উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি আর লেসি-দের। ক্রিস্টমাসের সময় বাড়ি ফেরার আশা ছেড়ে দিয়েছে তারা।
২৫শে ডিসেম্বর, ক্রিস্টমাসের সকালে ঘটে আয় এক আশ্চর্য ঘটনা।
হঠাৎ সেই অশান্ত যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে যেন নিস্তব্ধতার চাদর বিছিয়ে দেয় কেউ। নেই কোনও গুলির শব্দ, নেই কোনও উড়ন্ত গ্রেনেডের দৃশ্য। দুই পক্ষই যেন রণে ভঙ্গ দিয়েছে। ধীরে ধীরে দেখা যায় জার্মান শিবির থেকে দু একজন নিরস্ত্রভাবে এগিয়ে আসছে বরফে ঘেরা নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ডে। এদিকেও লিউটেনেন্ট জেনারেল খবর দেন যে ক্রিস্টমাসের যুদ্ধবিরতি ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে, দুই পক্ষই সম্মতি জানিয়েছে, আজ কোনও হিংসা বিদ্বেষ নয়।
দুরুদুরু বুকে সতীর্থদের সঙ্গে উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি আর লেসিরা ট্রেঞ্চ থেকে বেরিয়ে এগিয়ে যেতে থাকে নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ডের দিকে৷ জার্মান শত্রুদের মুখে হাসি, তারাও হাত বাড়িয়ে ডাকতে থাকে সবাইকে। একদিনের জন্য যেন সব ব্যবধান ঘুচে গেছে। শত্রুরা বন্ধুতে পরিণত হয়েছে। আসলে বন্ধুত্বই তো সহজ ও স্বাভাবিক। শত্রুত্বের বিভাজন যারা টেনে দেয়, দেশের তরুণদের যারা ঠেলে দেয় মুরগীর লড়াইয়ে, তারা নিজেরা তো সর্বদা বসে থাকে গ্যালারির দর্শকাসনে। আগুনের কোনও আঁচ লাগে না তাদের শরীরে৷
কোথা থেকে একটা চামড়ার ছেঁড়াখোড়া ফুটবল যোগাড় করেছে ওরা। ফ্রেডি এগিয়ে যায় সেই বল দেখে। কতদিন পা ছোঁয়াতে পারেনি ফুটবলে৷
"মেরি ক্রিস্টমাস" - এই শব্দবন্ধ উচ্চারিত হতে থাকে বিভিন্ন কোণ থেকে। নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ডের বরফাচ্ছাদিত মাঠে ফুটবলে লাথি মারতে থাকে সবাই। ব্রিটিশ যুবক বিলি-র বাড়ানো লম্বা পাস ধ'রে ফেলে জার্মান যুবক, দ্রুতপায়ে ছুটে যায় কাঁটাতারের বেড়ার কাল্পনিক গোলপোস্টের দিকে। বরফে আছড়ে পড়ার আগে সজোরে লাথ মারে বলে।

সবাই চেঁচিয়ে ওঠে আনন্দের সঙ্গে। ক্রিস্টমাস অবশেষে এক করে দিয়েছে ওদের। আজই কি যবনিকা পতন হতে পারে না অনাকাঙ্ক্ষিত এই সংগ্রামের? আজই কি ছুটি নিয়ে তারা ফিরে যেতে পারে না তাদের গ্রামে, যেখানে বাবা মায়েরা অধীর অপেক্ষায় বসে আছে একটা খবরের জন্য। দূরদেশে কেমন আছে তাদের সন্তান, আদৌ বেঁচে আছে কিনা তারা, সাধ্য নেই জানার।
ক্রিস্টমাস ভুলিয়ে দেয় সব হিংসা, সব ব্যবধান।
কিন্তু, ঠিক পরেরদিন আবার ডিউটি শুরু হয়ে যায়। গুলি ও গ্রেনেডের শব্দে ফিরে আসে সেই অভিশপ্ত সময়। ওপরমহল থেকে অর্ডার আসে উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি, লেসিদের জন্য। এবারে ছুটে আসা গুলির মধ্যে দিয়েই সন্তর্পণে নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ড অতিক্রম করে সরাসরি শত্রুপক্ষের ট্রেঞ্চে ঢুকে হামলা করতে হবে। বেয়নেটের আঘাতে ক্ষতবিক্ষত করতে হবে জার্মানদের। জীবনের ঝুঁকি নিয়ে এই হামলায় অন্তত চার পাঁচজন জার্মানকে উচিৎ শিক্ষা না দিয়ে যেন তারা প্রাণ বলিদান না দেয়।
প্রস্তুত হয় চার বন্ধু। গতকাল যাদের সঙ্গে ফুটবল ম্যাচ খেলা হয়েছে, আজ তাদের রক্তেই নিজের হাত রাঙাতে হবে। একমুখী এই অভিযানে ফিরে আসার সম্ভাবনা শূন্য। মন শক্ত করে নেয় উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি আর লেসি। ট্রেঞ্চের দেওয়াল বেয়ে উঠে পড়ে তারা। কাঁটাতারের বেড়া পেরিয়ে হাতে বন্দুক নিয়ে হামাগুড়ি দিয়ে এগোতে থাকে নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ড বরাবর...

লেখক ও শিল্পী মাইকেল ফোরম্যান অসাধারণ শৈলীতে বানিয়েছেন এই বইটি। যেমন সুন্দর লেখা, তেমনই অপূর্ব সব অলঙ্করণ। চরিত্ররা কাল্পনিক হলেও সম্পূর্ণ সত্য ঘটনার ওপর ভিত্তি করে সাজানো এই বইটি প্রকাশিত হয় ১৯৯৩ সালে। লেখকের চার কাকা প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধে শহীদ হয়েছিলেন। তাঁদের নামেই চরিত্রদের নামকরণ করেছেন লেখক। বইটি একাধিক পুরস্কার পায় পরবর্তীকালে। একটি শর্টফিল্মও তৈরি হয়েছিল বইয়ের কাহিনীর ওপর ভিত্তি করে, কমেন্টে লিঙ্ক রাখলাম।
যুদ্ধের ভয়াবহতার আড়ালে ঘটে যাওয়া অজানা ঘটনা নিয়ে একটি সিরিজ শুরু করেছিলাম চার পাঁচ বছর আগে। নাম দিয়েছিলাম 'রাজায় রাজায় যুদ্ধ'। সেই সিরিজকে বইয়ে রূপ দেওয়ার কাজে সামিল হয়েছি। সময় লাগবে একটু। সেই রিসার্চের সময় লন্ডনের লাইব্রেরিতে এই বইটি হঠাৎ চোখে পড়ল শিশুসাহিত্যের বিভাগে। লোভ সামলাতে পারলাম না পড়ার। বইপোকাদের জন্য লিখে ফেললাম পাঠানুভব।

এমন সময়ে তাদের কানে আসে ব্রিটেনের রাজা নিজের দেশের প্রতি কর্তব্যপালনের জন্য তরুণদের খোঁজ করছেন। সামান্য কিছু প্রশিক্ষণের পর তাদের পাঠানো হবে ফ্রান্সে, সেখানে এক দু মাস ডিউটি পালনের পর ক্রিস্টমাসের সময় ছুটি হয়ে যাবে।
চার বন্ধু দোনামনায় পড়ে যায় এই খবর শুনে। ফ্রান্স দেশটা কেমন তাদের জানা নেই, শুধু গল্পই শুনেছে বাবা দাদুদের কাছে। এ তো আর রক্তক্ষয়ী যুদ্ধ নয়, দেশের ইউনিফর্ম পরে প্রাকযুদ্ধের কিছু নিয়ম পালন করা, আর সঙ্গে বিদেশভ্রমণ। এমন সুযোগ কত বার আর আসে!
উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি ও লেসি মিলে শহরের টাউন হলে গিয়ে নিজেদের নাম লেখায়। শহরবাসী ড্রাম ও বাঁশি বাজিয়ে তাদের সম্বর্ধনা জানায়।
কয়েক দিনের প্রশিক্ষণের পর তারা ভেসে পড়ে ফ্রান্সের উদ্দেশে। তটভূমিতে জাহাজ থেকে নেমে পায়ে হেঁটে আর ঘোড়ায় টানা গাড়িতে চেপে তারা যখন গন্তব্যে এসে পৌঁছায়, তখন তাদের সমস্ত মোহ ভেঙে যায় এক লহমায়। দলনেতাকে অনুসরণ ক'রে চারিদিকে ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে থাকা লাশ ও ধ্বংসস্তূপের মধ্যে দিয়ে মাথা নিচু করে ওদের এগিয়ে যেতে হয়। রক্তবর্ণ আকাশের বুক চিরে কালো ধোঁয়ার কুণ্ডলী দেখা যায় দূরে, সঙ্গ কানফাটানো গ্রেনেড আর গুলির শব্দ। এ তো কোনও সাধারণ ডিউটি নয়, এ তো সরাসরি শত্রুপক্ষের মোকাবিলা। সম্মুখসমরে প্রাণ হাতে নিয়ে বেঁচে ফিরতে পারবে তো ওরা?
সরু অন্ধকার ট্রেঞ্চের মধ্যে এসে দাঁড়ায় ওরা চারজন, সঙ্গে আরও অসংখ্য যুবক। ব্রিটেনের প্রত্যন্ত সব গ্রাম থেকে এক বুক স্বপ্ন নিয়ে নরকের মাঝে এসে দাঁড়িয়েছে সবাই। সামনে বিস্তৃত নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ড, তারপর জার্মান শিবিরের ট্রেঞ্চ। মুহুর্মুহু গ্রেনেড উড়ে আসছে সেখান থেকে, কিছু পড়ছে মাঝের ফাঁকা জায়গায়, বাকিগুলিতে লেখা থাকছে এক একজন সৈন্যের নাম। মুহূর্তে ছিন্নভিন্ন হয়ে যাচ্ছে তাদের দেহ, পড়ে থাকছে পুড়ে যাওয়া জামার টুকরো, মাথার হ্যাট, বা আধপোড়া ডায়রির পাতা।
যুদ্ধের পরিবেশ দিন কাটতে থাকে।হিমশীতল ডিসেম্বর এগিয়ে আসে, অথচ যুদ্ধের আঁচ থামার নাম নেয় না। বরফাবৃত ট্রেঞ্চে ভীত সন্ত্রস্ত্র মুহূর্ত কাটে
উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি আর লেসি-দের। ক্রিস্টমাসের সময় বাড়ি ফেরার আশা ছেড়ে দিয়েছে তারা।
২৫শে ডিসেম্বর, ক্রিস্টমাসের সকালে ঘটে আয় এক আশ্চর্য ঘটনা।
হঠাৎ সেই অশান্ত যুদ্ধক্ষেত্রে যেন নিস্তব্ধতার চাদর বিছিয়ে দেয় কেউ। নেই কোনও গুলির শব্দ, নেই কোনও উড়ন্ত গ্রেনেডের দৃশ্য। দুই পক্ষই যেন রণে ভঙ্গ দিয়েছে। ধীরে ধীরে দেখা যায় জার্মান শিবির থেকে দু একজন নিরস্ত্রভাবে এগিয়ে আসছে বরফে ঘেরা নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ডে। এদিকেও লিউটেনেন্ট জেনারেল খবর দেন যে ক্রিস্টমাসের যুদ্ধবিরতি ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে, দুই পক্ষই সম্মতি জানিয়েছে, আজ কোনও হিংসা বিদ্বেষ নয়।
দুরুদুরু বুকে সতীর্থদের সঙ্গে উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি আর লেসিরা ট্রেঞ্চ থেকে বেরিয়ে এগিয়ে যেতে থাকে নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ডের দিকে৷ জার্মান শত্রুদের মুখে হাসি, তারাও হাত বাড়িয়ে ডাকতে থাকে সবাইকে। একদিনের জন্য যেন সব ব্যবধান ঘুচে গেছে। শত্রুরা বন্ধুতে পরিণত হয়েছে। আসলে বন্ধুত্বই তো সহজ ও স্বাভাবিক। শত্রুত্বের বিভাজন যারা টেনে দেয়, দেশের তরুণদের যারা ঠেলে দেয় মুরগীর লড়াইয়ে, তারা নিজেরা তো সর্বদা বসে থাকে গ্যালারির দর্শকাসনে। আগুনের কোনও আঁচ লাগে না তাদের শরীরে৷
কোথা থেকে একটা চামড়ার ছেঁড়াখোড়া ফুটবল যোগাড় করেছে ওরা। ফ্রেডি এগিয়ে যায় সেই বল দেখে। কতদিন পা ছোঁয়াতে পারেনি ফুটবলে৷
"মেরি ক্রিস্টমাস" - এই শব্দবন্ধ উচ্চারিত হতে থাকে বিভিন্ন কোণ থেকে। নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ডের বরফাচ্ছাদিত মাঠে ফুটবলে লাথি মারতে থাকে সবাই। ব্রিটিশ যুবক বিলি-র বাড়ানো লম্বা পাস ধ'রে ফেলে জার্মান যুবক, দ্রুতপায়ে ছুটে যায় কাঁটাতারের বেড়ার কাল্পনিক গোলপোস্টের দিকে। বরফে আছড়ে পড়ার আগে সজোরে লাথ মারে বলে।

সবাই চেঁচিয়ে ওঠে আনন্দের সঙ্গে। ক্রিস্টমাস অবশেষে এক করে দিয়েছে ওদের। আজই কি যবনিকা পতন হতে পারে না অনাকাঙ্ক্ষিত এই সংগ্রামের? আজই কি ছুটি নিয়ে তারা ফিরে যেতে পারে না তাদের গ্রামে, যেখানে বাবা মায়েরা অধীর অপেক্ষায় বসে আছে একটা খবরের জন্য। দূরদেশে কেমন আছে তাদের সন্তান, আদৌ বেঁচে আছে কিনা তারা, সাধ্য নেই জানার।
ক্রিস্টমাস ভুলিয়ে দেয় সব হিংসা, সব ব্যবধান।
কিন্তু, ঠিক পরেরদিন আবার ডিউটি শুরু হয়ে যায়। গুলি ও গ্রেনেডের শব্দে ফিরে আসে সেই অভিশপ্ত সময়। ওপরমহল থেকে অর্ডার আসে উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি, লেসিদের জন্য। এবারে ছুটে আসা গুলির মধ্যে দিয়েই সন্তর্পণে নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ড অতিক্রম করে সরাসরি শত্রুপক্ষের ট্রেঞ্চে ঢুকে হামলা করতে হবে। বেয়নেটের আঘাতে ক্ষতবিক্ষত করতে হবে জার্মানদের। জীবনের ঝুঁকি নিয়ে এই হামলায় অন্তত চার পাঁচজন জার্মানকে উচিৎ শিক্ষা না দিয়ে যেন তারা প্রাণ বলিদান না দেয়।
প্রস্তুত হয় চার বন্ধু। গতকাল যাদের সঙ্গে ফুটবল ম্যাচ খেলা হয়েছে, আজ তাদের রক্তেই নিজের হাত রাঙাতে হবে। একমুখী এই অভিযানে ফিরে আসার সম্ভাবনা শূন্য। মন শক্ত করে নেয় উইল, ফ্রেডি, বিলি আর লেসি। ট্রেঞ্চের দেওয়াল বেয়ে উঠে পড়ে তারা। কাঁটাতারের বেড়া পেরিয়ে হাতে বন্দুক নিয়ে হামাগুড়ি দিয়ে এগোতে থাকে নো-ম্যান্স-ল্যান্ড বরাবর...

লেখক ও শিল্পী মাইকেল ফোরম্যান অসাধারণ শৈলীতে বানিয়েছেন এই বইটি। যেমন সুন্দর লেখা, তেমনই অপূর্ব সব অলঙ্করণ। চরিত্ররা কাল্পনিক হলেও সম্পূর্ণ সত্য ঘটনার ওপর ভিত্তি করে সাজানো এই বইটি প্রকাশিত হয় ১৯৯৩ সালে। লেখকের চার কাকা প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধে শহীদ হয়েছিলেন। তাঁদের নামেই চরিত্রদের নামকরণ করেছেন লেখক। বইটি একাধিক পুরস্কার পায় পরবর্তীকালে। একটি শর্টফিল্মও তৈরি হয়েছিল বইয়ের কাহিনীর ওপর ভিত্তি করে, কমেন্টে লিঙ্ক রাখলাম।
যুদ্ধের ভয়াবহতার আড়ালে ঘটে যাওয়া অজানা ঘটনা নিয়ে একটি সিরিজ শুরু করেছিলাম চার পাঁচ বছর আগে। নাম দিয়েছিলাম 'রাজায় রাজায় যুদ্ধ'। সেই সিরিজকে বইয়ে রূপ দেওয়ার কাজে সামিল হয়েছি। সময় লাগবে একটু। সেই রিসার্চের সময় লন্ডনের লাইব্রেরিতে এই বইটি হঠাৎ চোখে পড়ল শিশুসাহিত্যের বিভাগে। লোভ সামলাতে পারলাম না পড়ার। বইপোকাদের জন্য লিখে ফেললাম পাঠানুভব।

A group of Suffolk lads enlist for World War One service, Foreman’s book displays some of the societal propaganda they would have faced to do so. They have much in common with their European brothers fighting on behalf of Germany. The two forces are singing the same hymns on Christmas Day and join together in their love for the beautiful game, playing football together. It’s hard to imagine anyone wanting to go and die in miserable trenches for King and Country these days.
Sadly there are a couple of distracting typos but it’s an interesting time capsule (Foreman’s uncles died in WWI) and beautifully drawn.

This book is an illustrated book for children. The story happened in 1914 during the first world war. It deals with a group of four young boys who dreamt of becoming professional football players and to join the national soccer team but they were enlisted and had to fight in France..
This book is very interesting because it shows how humans can be nice despite the horror of the WAR!

This is an wonderful and moving story of a group of young men who go to fight in the First World War, written in the memory of the author's uncles, who themselves went to war. It is beautifully illustrated and really captures the horror and fear that people would have faced at the time. However, the language is accessible and the story is not too graphic. This would be an excellent book for a World War One Topic and suitable for ages 7+.

I have been searching for this book for many years and finally located a copy that I could afford. It is one that I consider a "Christmas read" as it does cover, in detail, the night of the Christmas Eve truce during WWI. However, it is a somber read and while it is a "children's" book, I would take great care before sharing it with a child. It is dense and does not have a happy ending. That being said, it is well-written, well-researched, and informative and I do recommend it highly.

Semi-fictionalized account of the events of the months of the First World War. As soon as war is declared, four friends (loosely based on the author's uncles) join up, in what is known as a "Pal's Battalion." Everyone expects the war to end my Christmas. But it doesn't. Something else happens then, though — a cessation of hostilities and camaraderie between enemies, leading to football (soccer, for Americans) matches in No Man's Land. Excellent introduction for children.

A fantastic story... just a shame it had to be so true. Combined with elements of non-fiction this book would make a fantastic resource in a classroom of learners studying the World Wars. Displaying the highs and lows of the life of a soldier, you are really able to connect with their story. A great recommendation Mat, was a pleasure to read!

This historical fiction book follows the journey of four young friends who join the British Army during World War I. Throughout the book, it provides real images of propaganda during this time, trench life, No Man's Land, war traditions, and the effects of the war on civilians. This book would be a wonderful addition to a text set that focuses on the perspectives of World War I!

An incredibly thought provoking book. My class have been absolutely gripped covering this as part of their reading lessons. It’s heartbreaking seeing their optimism and naivety completely oblivious to what they’re going to face! I’ve never seen my class so gripped to a text - you can hear a pin drop as they almost hold their breath in anticipation of Billy, Will, Freddie and Lacey’s fate!

Very touching. After the lightheartedness and even joy of the Christmas Day truce and soccer game, this book is not afraid to face—and therefore cause children to face—the reality and sadness of war. The words are great, but it was the illustrations that really got me at the end.

96-page novella by one of the foremost children's illustrators from the UK. Dedicated to his four uncles, ages 18-24, killed in WWI, or the Great War, as the Brits call it. Using his uncles names for the main characters, Foreman follows four best friends from the time they enlist among all the patriotic jingoism to the realities of trench warfare, the famous Christmas truce, and their deaths in No Man's Land, the area between the German and the Allied trenches. Reprodcutions of wartime enlistment posters and adverts are included along with the author's illustrations on every page. Reading level, grade 4-6. Short enough to be used as a read-aloud. Excellent example of a historical novel. Could be paired with Jim Murphy's nonfiction book Truce, also about Christmas 1914 when the German and Allied troops refused to fight each other and played football and shared food instead.

This book is the author's tribute to his four lost uncles, two from his father's side and two from his mother's side. The four were friends in a small English village who loved football (soccer), enlisted together, played the famous Christmas football friendly with the Germans in no man's land, and later died in the fighting.
Bright watercolor illustrations seem incongruous in the beginning of the story, but fitting in the end. The enriching narrative provides a high level view of the politics and battles of the war through the very personal perspective of the four friends in the trenches. It's an engaging presentation.
The final two sections that deal with factual information about the war and about football (soccer) detract from the ambiance established by the story. I'm a little perplexed as the timing of them at the end of the book.

War Game is a fiction text that follows three young Britain youth as they embark on the adventure of war. Told through the eyes of one of these young men, War Game provides an historical fiction account of life in the trenches during World War I. The grueling monotony of trench life is broken for a brief period as both sides celebrate Christmas day with a friendly game of football (soccer). Unfortunately the realities of war take the men back to their respective trenches and the fighting ensues.
