This is not my genre(s). My boss saved it from the donation bin for me as a joke based on the title. I gave it a try, really. But if I'm screaming 'no!' when the main character declares their love for the person they end up with, you haven't sold the romance to me.
Also, if you're trying to milk a heifer, you're going to be disappointed.

I discovered author Mary Ellis' work this past Fall and realized that she writes a very interesting fictional account of life in the Old Order Amish community. I reviewed the first to books I read of Ms. Ellis'on http://ChatWithVera.blogspot.com and they are also here on Goodreads.com. I just completed a third read of her's, A Marriage for Meghan.

Meghan is a petite 19 year old Amish young lady that aspires to become a teacher in the district's one-room Amish school house. But Meghan has to overcome her past reputation as a prankster and flighty child and teen before she can be entrusted with this responsibility by the sober Bishop (her father) and other leaders of the community.

Factor into the story a young suitor that Meghan has known all her life and who really doesn't want to wait around while she achieves her dream. We learn that the Englischer world is not alone in heartbreak.

However, evil enters into this calm, serene world of mild-mannered families serving God in the form of hate crimes, vandalism, and arson bringing perplexity and anxiety to the heart and mind of those affected by it. Undesired by the Bishop, local law enforcement arrives and a FBI Special Agent is sent to solve the problem.

I recommend this as an excellent read that doesn't tarnish the mind and spirit of the reader.

Publisher: Harvest House Publishers, 2011

I received Marriage for Meghan directly from the author as a donation for our school's library. I reviewed it as a courtesy for her donation and was not required to write a positive review.

Meghan Yost!

Honestly, I didn’t know whether to hug her… or smack her!

One minute she’s complaining that no one treats her like an adult… and the next minute she’s whining and fussing – acting just like a child. It’s a wonder that Jacob Schultz loves her as much as he does, but what does she do but go and do her best to drive him away!

Oh my stars!

Then, just as she begins teaching at the school, strange things happen in the community; things that can’t be ignored. At first it looks like mischief caused by a few rowdy boys; but soon it gets out of control… the sheriff is called, but after the FBI gets involved, an agent is sent to check it out.

Thomas Mast, the FBI agent, finds an unlikely friendship – and more than a little help, in none other than Meghan Yost. And that’s just one more thing her dat has to worry about, in addition to the possible hate crimes happening in his community.

… Mary Ellis writes an amazing story, with bigger-than-life characters!

You won’t want to miss this exciting sequel to Abigail’s New Hope. I highly recommend this series – matter of fact, I highly recommend all the books I’ve read so far by this talented, delightful author.

A Marriage for Meghan-book#2(series Wayne County) by Mary Ellis

I got this book from library and was happy to read about Meghan wanting to be a teacher so bad that she tells the boy she has known all her life and everyone expected her to marry to back off...yes she needed time to pursue this career that she has dreamed of for very long time. Do you think he will understand and be supportive or does she take a chance of losing the love they have always shared.
Meghan's dad is the Bishop and where his girls are concerned he sometimes gets in hot water with the elders.
Meghan is a little scatterbrained type and her dad wonders if she is up to being a teacher so he suggest older daughter come and be teacher with meghan as assistant so she can learn. Sisters teaching together -do you think this is good idea?
there is a mystery involved as many of the amish have vandalism acts around their places and the local sheriff and even an FBI agent is called in when they think it could be hate crime.
Mary wrote a great story with the characters and we watched Meghan grow up in this book.

This second and last book of the Wayne County series was a well written and interesting Amish novel. It had both a romance and a mystery involving hate-crimes against the Wayne County Amish district. I really enjoyed the character development in this novel and am glad that I finally got around to reading it. I do wish though that the author had written more books set in this district because even with the Yost daughters all matched up, they had brothers and even friends who were interesting characters also but c'est la vie.

Megan is the youngest in her family and has always been seen as the accident prone child, full of ideas but little planning skills. She wants to be a teacher and while everyone is concerned she gets her sister to help her learn to teach.

Title: A MARRIAGE FOR MEGHAN
Author: Mary Ellis
Publisher: Harvest House
October 2011
ISBN: 978-0-7369-3010-9
Genre: Inspirational/Amish/Women’s fiction

Meghan Yost has dreamed of becoming a school teacher all her life. When the current teacher must resign because she is expecting a baby, Meghan begs for the job. But her father, the bishop, is hesitant to hire her because Meghan is young and flighty, spending more time playing with children than engaging in more womanly activities.

Her father finally agrees to let Meghan have the job of assistant teacher if her sister takes the main teaching position. Meghan is thrilled. But then a string of hate crimes against the Amish occur. Her brothers are beaten, the school is vandalized, fences cut, and crops destroyed. Since the local police believe that the Amish are targeted, they call in the FBI to investigate.

Thomas Mast is sent to do the work in Amish country. As the low man in the FBI totem pole he gets the jobs no one else wants. But the Amish refuse to press charges, and with little to nothing to go on, Thomas doesn’t know how he can solve this mystery. Meanwhile, the hate crimes continue, getting more vicious and hateful each time. Will Thomas find the guilty party? Will Meghan prove her worth as a teacher?

A MARRIAGE FOR MEGHAN is the second book in Mary Ellis’ The Wayne County Series set in Ohio. Meghan is a teenager, active, and impulsive, and anxious to find her own way, even hurting those who get in her way. There are other points of view included in this story – Thomas Mast, who has a secret of his own; The bishop’s, who is making some controversial decisions; Meghan’s sister, Catherine, who is the new head teacher and had to leave her beau to do so…

A MARRIAGE FOR MEGHAN is a great read. It does start out a little slow but it quickly picks up. I couldn’t put this book down. The ending isn’t all neatly tied up, so I think Meghan’s story will probably be continued as a secondary character in the third book of this series. Fans of Amish fiction won’t want to miss A MARRIAGE FOR MEGHAN. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $13.99. 290 pages.

Meghan Yost has a dream, she wanted to be a school teacher and lead kinner into learning. However, her own father didn't seem to believe in her dream. And neither did Jacob, her "sort of boyfriend." In fact it seemed that no one but Meghan believed in her dream. However a chance presented itself and with great powers of persuasion and some help from her mother, she was allowed to follow her dream. Sort of, she was allowed to co-teach with her sister Catherine, being trained by Catherine to be able to teach alone.

It seems that someone in the community has something against her family. Or pehaps someone has something against all Amish, since the horrible things that are happening in the community are not just against the Yosts, but other families as well. Her father, Gideon calls the law, even though that is not normal for the Amish. Will his congregation turn against him, for bringing in outsiders?

This book seemed a bit slow to me. I don't know if it was because there were so many side stories going on, or what it was, but it took me all day to read the book, and that is not normal. I did enjoy Meghan's story, it just felt like too many of the side stories distracted from Meghan's story. The book does not conclude with a wedding, so perhaps we will see Meghan in another story. 304 pages, $US 13.99 3 stars.

Mary Ellis is one of my favorite Amish fiction authors. A lot of her Amish stories are set in the Midwest and the characters are well developed and fewer in number. When I start a book by her, I want to keep reading until the end and I am sad when it is getting ready to end.

Megan Yost is in size, the youngest in a family, her character reminded my mother who was also the smallest and often called the runt in the family. Her ambition was to become a school teacher and be the best that she could be. Her curiosity sometime got her into trouble and her goal of being of a teacher disappointed her best friend and suitor. He wanted to marry and have children soon.

A rash of hate crimes against the Amish came to the attention of Megan' s father who was also a bishop and unlike the custom of Amish working out the problem in the community, he contacted the local sheriff and then felt very uncomfortable with his decision. The sheriff in turn contacted the FBI. Then we are introduced Agent Thomas Mast who has an interesting background and feels more at home in the country and with nature and a lot of city folks.

I highly recommend this book! My family experienced hate crimes on a smaller scale than the Amish in this story and I liked the way that sheriff handled in this book much better than what we experienced in real life.

A MARRIAGE FOR MEGHAN by Mary Ellis is an interesting inspirational Amish suspense/romance set in Shreve,Ohio. ”A Marriage For Meghan” is the second in the “The Wayne County” series, but can be read as a stand alone. See “Abigail’s New Hope”.It is the story of Meghan Yost,a teenager who wants to be a teacher,Thomas Mast, an FBI agent sent to Shreve,Ohio to investigate the rush of crimes in the area and Jacob Shultz. This is a heartwarming story of love, forgiveness,Amish culture, the Amish community, faith, crimes, secrets, redemptation, and finding God’s plan for one self. A faith paced story not is not only heartwarming but also has strong characters who have their problems, and issues with both family and community. A must read for anyone who enjoys Amish culture, mystery, romance, and inspirational reads. Received for my honest opinion from the publisher. As with the first book in this series, this book was not the typical Amish boy-meets-girl story. Instead, the storyline focused on Meghan's desire to prove to herself and her family that she has grown out of the 'silly little goose' phase of her life. She aspires to become a school teacher for their church district. At first, she is unsure and intimidated; but, with her elder sister Catherine's help, she's able to find her confidence and become a good teacher.
As if that storyline wasn't intriguing enough, there are several instances of violence/vandalism against the Amish district, which lead to Agent Thomas Mast of the FBI coming to investigate the possible hate crimes. As Thomas and Meghan strike up an unlikely friendship, her Dat (the Bishop of the district) worries that Meghan's head will be turned by the Englisher and his 'fancy' lifestyle.
A really enjoyable read!

Meghan wants to be appointed by her father bishop to teach in the local school, but he and the community are concerned that she is not old enough to handle it. So her sister, Catherine, comes home to help while her intended, Isreal, is attending school for the deaf. Her decision to be a teacher puts her friend, Jacob, a little out of sorts because Meghan wants teaching more than courting. Meanwhile vandalism is happening in the community and a special agent with an Amish past, Thomas, comes into the scene. Read the book to find the answers to the mysteries, how Meghan's love life turns out and how Gideon (Meghan's father) patiently waits for his answers for balance between reporting to the police and forgiving guilty persons.

Meghan the youngest daughter of the Yost, an Amish family. She wants to be a school teacher before she becomes a wife and mother. She needs to show everyone that she can do it so she is given a trial run so to speak. She has a chance when the current teacher needs to leave because of her pregnancy. This story has many different twist and turns in it because of crime against the Amish community, the FBI agent brought in to investigate and the young man who is in love with Meghan. It is a good story.
