Getting the idea from a great inventor who has settled in his town, a young mechanical wizard invents a device that enables him to fly his bicycle on a rescue mission which makes him a great hero.
If my memory serves me (and it usually doesn't but - oh well) I believe this was a "Scholastic" book. You're giving away your age if you remember what that is. It must have been a pretty good book if I still remember it today (see above re: memory).
This book is a great book. My favorite part is when Melvin hands Mr. Mickimecki the pellet that he made. What does it do? How does it work? If you like inventing things, read this book.
I found "The Furious Flycycle" at a thrift store and recognized the author, thought the illustrations looked fun and, because it was so short, it seemed like it would be a good read-aloud for my 3 boys.
My youngest two (aged 5, 8) got bored and wandered off before it got exciting so they missed the heroic rescue at the end, but my oldest (aged 10) gave it 5-stars.
I remember reading this book on an airplane ride to go visit my grandmother, it is a really fun book and I recall thinking how cool it would be to be able to invent my own flying bicycle.
My daughter thought this was a really fun book. While she read anything and everything she particularly enjoyed books filled with imagination and invention.
