Orcs: First Blood #3

Warriors of the Tempest

Rate this book
The third volume in Nicholls's critically acclaimed fantasy finds Maras Dantia drowning in war. Stryke, head of the renegade orcs, and his warband have found the long-lost relic they need--but still do not know how to use it. And, while they try to figure it out, enemies hunt them from every corner. Worse yet, the three sisters are close to forming an alliance that will overturn history. Time is running out to save the world. Nicholls's masterworks are the first to tell the story from the other side--from the point of view of the orcs, the villains of Lord of the Rings.

I barely finished this one and probably won't read another Nicholls's Orc serie, already give too much time to it.

Even if I finally pass over the fact that it don't really live the expectation to see the world with orc eyes (when you make a wolrd just for them, they become a generic fighter race), I couldn't care for the rest of the story.

Again, everytime the Orcs got in trouble, they just fight and win. Worst part is near the end, the Orcs are trapped in a city without issue facing a siege against one of the main villain. Actually the siege was very good and when the evil sorceress Jannesta appears with his army to change the dynamic, I thought the final confrontation will happen.

No, the Orcs just stole the magic item needed and flee in the night.. just like that.
After that they got trapped by some city guard but Stryke assembled miracously all the magic items and the band was teleported at the North Pole. They beat the blizzard to find a castle. Inside, morphing telepath demon make then surrender. But the mysterious Serapheim, not an angel but an ancient powerful sorcerer, appears and help them so the Orcs beats the demon easyly. When escaping, Jannesta and it's army out of nowhere came to save/help them a second time. And they eliminated her in the end...

So maybe some people would find Orcs action packed, but it's all the same pattern, cut and paste. The book has some good moment but clearly didn't like the Nicholls way to tell the story, no deepth at all. This book is equivalent of D&D session I was doing around 12 years old when going fight after fight was fun forgetting about the roleplaying.

I bought an omnibus of all six Orcs books, and now that I've finished the third one (essentially the first of two trilogies) I don't think I'll continue any more. Like the first two, this book isn't bad, but isn't good enough to make me want to invest the time it will take to read another trilogy.
Aside from the main cast of orcs all being practically invincible, Stan Nicholls tried to humanise them at the cost of consistency. In the first book two orcs are killed and the others say some words of respect before burning the bodies and moving on. Nicholls makes a point of establishing the orcs as being as pragmatic as possible and without sentiment. However, in this book the death of an orc is treated as a monumental tragedy, with one orc weeping even though it was clearly stated that orcs were incapable of doing so.
Now that the plot of the trilogy has been wrapped up and resolved, I see no need to start the second trilogy. It may not be a bad book, but after reading incredible fantasy series like A Song of Ice and Fire, The Malazan Book of the Fallen, and Worm, I can't really enjoy any series where the main characters have invincible plot armour.

I really enjoyed the first two books, and this was ok, but for me just drifted off track in about the last third, after the siege.
Some of it just annoyed me, such as the sudden re appearance of one of the bounty hunters, and somehow the castle in the wasteland and everything that occurred in it did not quite sit right.
It was ok, enjoyable enough, but just a little unsatisfying at the end.

Come i precedenti, lettura tutto sommato piacevole e veloce.

A very satisfactory conclusion to a pretty strong trilogy. Not overly long, nor unnecessarily drawn-out, this is full of action and follows a likable bunch of characters. The action is well-described and also not overly elaborate.
There are a few plot points that are just left behind and the ending did feel a little rushed, but this was an enjoyable adventure with a fun twist.

Fast paced and action packed, Warriors of the Tempest was a fantastic final book in the trilogy. Exciting, unpredictable and unputdownable. 4.5 / 5

Really a 3.5. Fast-paced, but we seemed to take two steps backwards for every half step forwards. Really could use more down time between crises for us to really like the characters and for relationships to form rather than just stabby stabby kill, and now we are allies.

The final book of the trilogy. I Can imagine this being well suited to a late 80's early 90's scword and sorcery type movie, but as a book, the plot is thin. Really only read this to complete the trilogy.

Come mandare all'aria una saga abbastanza buona.

Bloodthirsty, as were the first two books in the trilogy, but good fun and the books finishes with a decent ending.

A great fantasy read! Lots of action, a real page turner.
Very cool ending, although I'd have liked an epilogue!

I thought that this was an okay read. The action followed straight on from book 2. More chases. fights, and magic. A conclusion to the quest is achieved, but it felt a bit anti-climactic.

The last book of the triology is packed with action and big battles. It took a couple of chapters before i got into the story again and the action starts. The beginning of this book is necessary to understand the last chapters of the book. After page 100 (?) the story goes "on" real quick and a lot is happening. You have no time to become bored or distracted and sometimes you need time to recover from all things happening in the book. The first half of the book is rougly worth 3 stars and the last half of the book is worth 5 stars. So an average of 4 stars. I still believe that making one book out of these 3 books would be better.

To be honest this book is hovering between a 3 and a 4. It was never nail bitingly engaging but there was enough going on to keep me interested to the end.

That being said Nicholls writes combat decently. He ties up all the major threads but there was just a spark missing, an intensity. I gave the first book in the series a 4 star rating with the knowledge that it too was skirting the line between 3 & 4. So I can't really justify doing it again.

Overall the series is worth a read if you have the time, a simple adventure, some decent characters and good action sequences. Just don't expect too much.
