NEW RELEASE!! The Skinny On Jack book #2 in the humorous Jack B Smart cozy mystery series.
https://amzn.to/2Kg7S0q
Jacqueline Bouviér Smart, aka Jack B to friends and family, is an aspiring mystery writer and part time amateur sleuth who has once again sworn off men and murder.

Inheriting shares in a weight loss company over the holidays should be a good thing, not something that leads to bombs going off and your car getting blown up. Right? Jack B doesn’t think so. Nor does she trust on again, off again beau, Seattle Police Detective Stone Maddox to catch the culprits.

When she starts to investigate, she discovers more might be disappearing at the weight loss clinic than pounds. The owner has been missing for a few months. Before she can figure out what’s going on, her counselor dies. Then Stone gets involved, and his brother Duke, and three gun-totin’ grannies, and even her deceased ex-husband. Before Jack B knows what hit her, she’s up to her favorite hoop earrings in men and murder. Again.

We are first introduced to Livia when she arrives at the Pearly Gates the day before her wedding, having been shot to death before her time. An entity called the Processor allows her to relive one month to prevent her death and make sure the right guy gets killed instead. Livia agrees and wakes up one month before, prepared to make sure her wedding caterer takes the bullet that was meant for him. Except then, as you probably suspected, they fall in love.

Some highlights:

*Livia commits felony breaking and entering in broad daylight, dressed in a green workout outfit so she will blend in with the shrubbery.

*Mark gets a concussion from blunt force trauma, then says some really cringy "playing doctor" shit while Livia bandages his head, even asking for a lollipop (by which he means sex). Livia is super turned on by these clumsy come ons.

*The author attempts a nuanced approach towards food and weight issues toawrds the end, but boy did she flub it.

*Except for the prologue, each chapter begins with a "recipe", which is not for actual food but is meant to be a cute, witty hint at what's to come in the following chapter. Meant to be. I don't think she pulled it off.

I did not like this book, so I'm rating this a reluctant 3 stars because I don't think it surpasses or falls short of exactly what it claims to be: a mass market romance novel meant to adhere to certain tropes and genre conventions. It could have benefitted a lot from editing, though. I found a blatant continuity error, a noticeable spelling error, and two sentences that were absolute gibberish. Where was the quality control?

Also, the fatphobia was intense.

Steep For 7 Weeks.
Pour Down The Drain.

In all seriousness, I think this book is perfect for people who want to enjoy something comfortably familiar that spells everything out for them. Cozy mysteries (usually with a cooking theme, interestingly enough) are what I like to read for that purpose so this didn't hit that sweet spot for me. I will accept a lot of lazy, implausible nonsense from a cozy mystery, and this book was full of it, so I could see it being a nice way to mentally unwind for a romance reader.

(I realize that since this book has a mystery element it might sound silly that I couldn't jump right on board but there is a difference between a romance with a mystery plotline and mystery with a romantic plotline, and this was the former while I like the latter.)
