Charts Made Simple: understanding knitting charts visually

Rate this book
Charts Made Simple teaches knitters how to read charts – and, better yet, how to make the most of to see that a chart is a picture of knitted fabric; to make sense of the symbols in a chart without being tied to its key; to use charts as guides for minimizing and recovering from mistakes; and to handle chart quirks – “no stitch” symbols, repeated stitches, changes in stitch count, and more – with ease.

JC Briar learned to knit to fill her free time, while living as an exchange student in Chile. On her return to the US, she had to re-learn knitting terminology in English! This language gap didn't slow her down, though, as she dabbled in all types of knitting, and developed a special fondness for textured knitting and novel construction techniques. If it involves lace, cables, or seamless construction, it's sure to catch her eye.

JC's designs have appeared in numerous publications, including Creative Knitting, INKnitters magazine, Janet Szabo's Twists and Turns newsletter, and books published by House of White Birches. Most recently, Blue Moon Fiber Arts has chosen to publish some of her sock designs. Many of her designs begin with "what if?" questions: What if you wanted stripes that zigged one way and stitch patterning that zagged the other way? What if you mixed cables with intarsia, or with lace? What if you wanted to make an entirely reversible sweater?

It's this sort of out-of-the-box thinking that JC likes to encourage in her classes. Regardless of the topic, she aims to build confidence by expressing concepts clearly and concisely, and by presenting skills and ideas in a digestible progression.

When not teaching at Needlecraft University or fiber festivals, JC brings clarity to knitting patterns as a freelance technical editor. She is also a member of the Association of Knitwear Designers.

JC Briar lives in Corvallis, OR.

Here is an absolutely essential guide to truly understand the language of charting knitwear. Granted, it's a bit tedious if you're already experienced in reading charts, but if you really need to get your head around writing them, Briar didn't overlook a thing! (Not that I've found, anyway.) I also appreciate the brief summary at the end of each chapter, as well as the quizes that test how well the concept sticks. It's well worth picking up a spare ball of yarn to practice as you work through this one.

This slim book (104 pages) was one of the more difficult knitting books that I've ever read - and I'm an experienced knitter! Lots of information explaining in tedious (and necessary) detail on how to read knitting charts and how to "read" your knitting. I learned some new things! If you knit projects that include charting, you need to read this book. A good investment!

Pretty basic for me, but a good resource to overcome the inevitable senior moment or brain cramp and an awesome guide for anyone new to charted knitting.

It is absolutely wonderful. So clear. Taught me a lot about using charts, I'm much happier with them in a pattern than I was. I quite enjoy working from them now!
