The Bible tells the unique story of the history of God's redemption, focusing on the central character-Jesus. It was difficult for the ancient people of Israel to put their faith and hope in a Messiah who would not make his appearance for more than a thousand years, so God gave them a series of feasts that provided a hint of the One who was coming. Today, we too must know something about the feasts that celebrate Jesus to truly comprehend that he is the Messiah. Join author John Sittema, and meet Jesus at the feasts!
I stumbled upon this on my bookshelf, started reading it (particularly because I was preaching on the Passover/Lord's Supper), and then couldn't stop. This is chock-full of information about each of the Jewish festivals and does an excellent job of showing how Christ fulfilled each and every one. A beautiful Biblical Theology. I'm sure I will be re-visiting this resource often.
Really enjoyed this book!! First time I have studied/read about the feasts in depth, and not surprisingly, I walked away with a greater understanding of and wonder at God’s covenantal plan through all of history.
Wow. Mind blown. I just finished reading through the entire Bible chronologically for the second time and every time a feast was mentioned in the OT, I was tired of having no mental category for what that really looked like historically. The names of the feasts were lost on me. Now they have come to life in a beautiful way. The terms “trumpet” and “jubilee” carry rich meaning for our present context much like when I realized “Israel” means the church a couple of years ago. Scripture comes alive!! However, I felt like the author’s writing style was not a page-turner - I am not really sure why - he gave great and interesting examples throughout, but I just wanted a bit of a crisper clip to the message of each chapter as I had to focus to stay engaged throughout. This may have been because the content was so foreign to me initially…that always slows down my reading with unfamiliar terms and such. But all in - super thankful for this book and it’s accessibility if you can put in the effort of reading for treasure.
While I was blessed to sit at the feet of Dr. John Sittema and have my spiritual eyes opened to both the original Jewish origins of Israel's festivals and the fulfillment of many of them in the person of Jesus, the Messiah (and the promise of the few still to come), it is wonderful to have them now in print; especially since my original cassette tapes died of exhaustion!
Meeting Jesus at the Feast: Israel's Festivals and the Gospel by John R. Sittema is both unforgettable and always fresh and new at each read. I highly recommend that every Christian celebrate each of the Jewish Festivals each year. To that end, I also suggest keeping this jewel of a volume handy, but near your Bible, not stored away with holiday things; you're going to want it for reference throughout the year.
