Cain Casey is close to getting everything she wants. Her partner Emma is pregnant with their third child, her children are safe and happy, and her business is still thriving despite the FBI’s vendetta. Life is perfect on the surface, but it’s the underbelly that worries her. Her long-time enemy Juan Luis and his new partner, rogue agent Anthony Curtis have disappeared; her cousin Muriel has gotten serious about Shelby Philips, the FBI agent in charge of the Casey surveillance team; and her business partner, Remi Jatibon, is facing trouble from her new love Dallas’s secret past.
While Cain struggles to defeat a new enemy—a woman who just may be her equal when it comes to destroying those who stand against her family—an unimaginable betrayal may bring Cain’s charmed life to an end.
Ali Vali is the author of the long-running Cain Casey "Devil" series and the Genesis Clan "Forces" series, as well as numerous standalone romances including two Lambda Literary Award finalists, Calling the Dead and Love Match, and her 2017 release, Beauty and the Boss. Ali also has a novella in the collection Girls with Guns. Originally from Cuba, Ali has retained much of her family's traditions and language and uses them frequently in her stories. Having her father read her stories and poetry before bed every night as a child infused her with a love of reading, which she carries till today. Ali currently lives outside New Orleans, Louisiana, and she has discovered that living in Louisiana provides plenty of material to draw from in creating her novels and short stories.
This series gets even more intense with all that surprises that Cain, Emma and family have to face. I'd feel sorry for law enforcement if there's someone out there like Cain Casey and her clan 'cause they have no hope of ever bringing her down.
With a new book in the series coming out soon I decided to catch up on the earlier books I haven’t read. It’s been over a year since the last book so it took me a while to sort out the main characters and all the cousins and friends and employees. You need a playbook and family tree to keep everyone straight.
I liked this installment ok. Cain’s wife Emma is my favorite character. She’s smart and tough. The bad guys in these books are pure evil and do terrible things. It makes you root for Cain to take them out.
I know I am late to the party on this series however I am so deeply engrossed that I have not taken the time to review any of these first four novels in the series. Anything Mobsters, FBI, or gangland violence is one of my favourite genres. This series revolves around Cain Casey and her family in the modern bootleg business. The action is none stop as threats are made towards Cain, her family and their business. This is a roller coaster ride and I am anxious to see where Ms Vali takes me next. She is a natural story teller who weaves the story through many different family members. Her characters are memorable, strong women who control their world and will do anything to protect it. 5⭐️
Another fantastic book in the series. Each book draws you in from the very first page and makes you forget everything else but the brilliance on the page. There is so much heartbreak in this one. In this book we say goodbye to Uncle Jarvis. Poor Muriel she becomes so lost. My heart bleeds for her. She deserves the love and happiness that Cain and Emma have together, but Shelby is not it. As if loosing her father isn’t enough then you add Shelby’s betrayal on top of that, but Cain is there to be her shelter in the storm. The Casey bond is an amazing gift. As much as I dislike Shelby for her betrayal, in no way did she deserve what Anthony does to her parents. I wanted to punch Brent for the way he treated Cain. The FBI seems to breed some assholes. We also learn more of Dallas’s childhood and the pain she has endured at the hands of her father. I can’t get enough of these amazing woman and the families they love and create.

There’s more characters being introduced, and old storylines being added onto, but sometimes I feel like there may be too much going on. It can be a little hard to follow at times. I still really like the side characters a lot and Cain and Emma are continuing to work on their relationship.
It continues to amaze me how much I am enjoying this series. The likable mobsters and unlikable law enforcement. I believe what has me intrigued is women in nontraditional roles. The women are cool, sexy, devoted, suave, yet relentless and ruthless in the work they do. This fourth book in the series is about Remi and Dallas, Muriel and Shelby, rogue FBI agent Curtis and Juan Luis. The story is not as interesting as the last one but the read held my attention enough for me to finish and look forward to reading the next. Because there are so many characters to keep track of, I know that I need to read the next one sooner rather than later.
Yet again. This series just gets better with the more I read. It has everything. A bit of adventure, a bit of humour and a lot of family, friendship and love. The author has a very fluid writing style. She involves you from the first word to the last. Many would say this book was good verses evil. But it sure makes you question which is which. Excellent book, excellent storyline and excellent characters. Enjoy. I'm off to read number five.
Vali has an immense talent at weaving little plots amongst the big picture without tripping us up or getting us lost in the tangled web of the life of Cain Casey. She also writes without apology. There's no unnecessary dialogue or extra words in her sentences, making them clean, precise, and almost cut-throat. I see her writing style mirroring the characters in the story.
Cain is a formidable, relentless boss who always gets her man without any egotistical mindset hindering her actions. She's a thinker who acts, not reacts with knee-jerk responses, and that's why she's smooth at her job. And that's another reason why she's not dead. That iron power of hers can easily shift to a softness she only holds for her wife, Emma, and their beautiful children. Seeing Cain melt within Emma's small but strong arms lets us see the humane side of Cain Casey. Vali always reminds us, though, just how lethal and unforgiving Casey can be when thugs and such try to screw her over or harm her family in any way shape or form. And that is more of a turn-on than seeing her with her wife in their bed making love. Cain is devoted and committed to her family, her entire family, right down to her Irish soul that I fear it may be her undoing at some point. Whenever a threat arises toward someone she loves, I see her mind unraveling a touch and her losing some of that control. Fortunately, Cain surrounds herself with like-minded individuals who can reel her back in and keep her feet on the ground, including her cousin Remi. I love Remi, she's like Cain in a lot of ways, but a tad wilder and maybe a bit more passionate toward her love, Dallas. And just like Cain, she's smooth and unforgiving to those who've wronged her or anyone she cares for. It's a thrill to see these two badass women take of care of business just how men have been doing it for decades. I cannot get enough of Cain Casey and this whole series.
I look forward to jumping into book 5. Gotta catch up before book 7 is released next month ;)
This series is the kind the bad guys become the heroes and you do not feel guilty about it. So far, this continues to be captivating and entertaining read. I however, felt this fourth book did not fully cross all its T's and I's as some aspects of the story feels somewhat disconnected/unsatisfactory. All the same, the cliffhanger makes me hunger to get my hands on the next book in series.
I really love this book but also hate it not in a bad way but because of everything that happens. Muriel is hurt in is the process of some detective work from Shelby even after losing someone she loved. The fact that Juan Luis was so close in hurting the women Cain loves the most, Emma but in the process he also hurt Merrick with a bullet to the head. Or the fact that Cain ended up in the hospital again after encountering another FBI agent on his high horse. Or even that Dallas's past comes knocking at her door to take her back to the place witch holds her worst nightmares or the fact that nothing that happens in the past three books comperes to what happens in this one book. Its amazingly written but its just one of those books that cant help but fuel your hate toward the people who do the hurting you cant help but feel happy when there caught and showed not to mess with the Casey or Jatibon family heads or there wife's. But theirs also good in this book the fact that Emma is pregnant with Cain's third child, Merrick surviving the bullet wound and finding a women who will love her and be there for her even during her recovery, the fact that Dallas and Remi can finally start a life without a past holding them back from loving fiercely. This book shows so much love and caring that you cant help but feel it yourself. An amazing book.!! And on with the fifth one.
Bravely onto part four of this mob saga which is frankly getting a little tedious – but what can we say? – we are somewhat OCD about finishing series’.
In this 4th book of the series, there are a number of subplots, each darker than the next. First, there's the relationship of Cain's cousin Muriel with FBI agent Shelby and how that impacts Muriel's work for Cain. Then there's the renegade duo of Juan and Anthony who escaped after their attempt to kidnap Cain's partner, Emma. There's the drug dealer families, the horrible abusive, molesting father of Remi's gf Dallas, and the relentless pursuit by the FBI. This is not a romance.
As always, the book is well plotted and as I said dark. There are still scenes of love, affection and sex between Cain and Emma as well as between Dallas and Remi, but those are just reprieves from the mounting danger and suspense.
One thing to point out is the continued arc of Emma's character. In a previous book, you saw her coming into her own as a strategist. In this book, that trait is really well developed and makes us wonder how much more of that we will see of her. It's good to see her partnership with Cain becoming more equal.
Loose ends aren't tied up when the book ends, which of course, makes you want to get to the next one.
Yeah no, there are no words. While I feel sorry for Shelby, I absolutely dislike (if not hate) her for what she’s done to Muriel. I love Muriel and she deserves to be happy. I can’t wait to see her happy! I’m really glad Remi took care of Dallas and showed her that she loves her. And yes for having Kristen around! My poor bb Merrick, I’m so glad she’s finally doing better and better over time. I’ve grown to love her quite a lot. And I don’t have to say anything about Cain and Emma, I guess. They’re everything and I love them with all my heart.

This story was very intense and on some levels very sad. Muriel had to deal with betrayal and her loyalties to her family. Remi and Dallas’s story continues to evolve and of course, Cain and Emma. The sexy mobster who is devoted to her family and her beautiful wife who is fiercely protective of Cain and her children. Every book in this series is an excellent stepping stone for the next one. Can’t wait!
“The devil is tempting not because he’s hideous, but because he’s beautiful. It’s when you’re in his grasp and you’ve gladly sold your soul that he finally shows his true face. Only then it’s too late.” + • + • + • +
I swear, this series got better every book— especially considering how high the bar was set with the first one!! But, it more than delivered… & can't wait to see what happens next.
I have been reading Ali Vali Caine Casey series and loving them. I think this one might be my favorite book yet. It is so action packed and you are meeting lots of new characters. I a, very excited about the new one coming out 1/16/2018 Heart of the Devil which is Caine and Emma's back story. I just love it when Emmy calls Caine mobster....Keep em coming Ali.
The family woman and mobster's life continues to deal with problems from the drug cartels, the FBI, her extended family, and some new characters in the series. Her love for Emma and their kids is always blossoming while they await their next child to be born.
This one was only ok to me. I was pretty disappointed. I've loved the series up until this book. I'm considering not continuing the series because of my feelings about this one. However, curiosity will likely get the better of me.
This series just keeps getting better. I keep revisiting this series again and again, the character's are well developed and the story lines make me want to carry on reading.
Ms Valli has done an excellent job with her story line. I just finished this book after reading the previous ones in this series straight through without stopping. I haven't had this much fun reading in along time. thank you such for great read and look forward to completing this series
I like how Vali interweaves the title with Cain's philosophies about the devil. The scene in Talbot's office proves that Emma is a devoted partner and enhances Cain. Even though this book is a solid continuation of the series, it fizzled out compared to the previous ones. The most entertaining parts of this story were Brent's heavy-handed actions towards Cain and Emma's protection of Cain while she was in the hospital. I was tempted to skip the plot involving Dallas and Remi because it felt as if their story took away from the Casey Clan. However, I stayed with it to see what Remi would give Johnny Moores as a Father of the Year award along with the Pritchard brothers. Instead of Dallas and Remi, it would have been nice to read more about Muriel either with Shelby or with someone else. Muriel had a lot of character in The Devil Inside, but she too seemed to loose that sharp wit she possessed at the warehouse in the first book. I haven't mentioned in my previous reviews that the sex scenes feel incomplete. The scenes have great build ups and climaxes, but they end abruptly. No fade to black, just...its over and let's talk about something other than the mind blowing sex we just had. Hopefully, this book is the calm before the storm that's to be released in The Devil's Orchard.
I've been putting off reading this book and today, after finding out my book was due, I quickly read through it in a hurry starting from five and ending at eight.
... Honestly, Ali Vali never fails to amaze me.
Usually, I would skim through the parts with Juan and carry on with the adorable Emma/Cain moments. But today was not the case rather I focused more on Muriel than anyone else. She's really starting to grow on me and I feel like I can really sympathize with her. She just has her head everywhere, but she quickly redeems herself. I find myself hating Shelby after every book. And what they did to Cain made me completely sick to my stomach! Go on Emma, beat them with a bat!
This might sound ludicrous, but I really liked that Carlos character. Rick's sister seems to be another eye-candy of mine. I hope I'll see them in the future Casey series.
Now if only I could get my hands on novel five somehow..
This the fourth book in the Casey Family Saga series and a good read. For some reason, I have skipped the third book which I will have to go track down, and I am eagerly looking forward to the fifth. Cain Casey is a woman you don't want for an enemy but her loyalty and her love of family is admirable.
Not my usual genre so I had a bit of difficulty wading through the context and setting. I did however appreciate that I remained interested in the characters and the human element. The importance of love, family and friends.
Cain Casey and her family face more conflict with the FBI and with other mob leaders. The drug lords want to use Casey to get better established in New Orleans. While all that goes on there is trouble brewing for Remi and Dallas. Wonder what twists will be coming in book 5?
