Christian Heroes: Then & Now #25

Sundar Singh: Pegadas Nas Montanhas

Rate this book
Enquanto Sundar pregava o evangelho à multidão, a guarda do mosteiro avançou e o prendeu. As a young man from India, he hiked over the Himalayas to Tibet to spread Christianity to the Buddhists with limited success. He also travelled the Christian world and wrote many books. He mysteriously disappeared in the Himalayas in 1929. One of the less interesting books in this series.

Sundar and another man were walking in the snow traveling to a town for warmth and food.
They came across a man lying in the snow. The temperatures were dropping rapidly.
Sundar said, "I think he is alive. Let's help this man."
The other man, bone weary tired about to freeze to death couldn't think about anything except getting to town before the temperatures froze them all to death.
He kept walking. Don't stop. He is dead. Leave him. Or we are all dead.
What would you do in this situation?
Sundar is a Christian in India 🇮🇳 and his life is transformed by Jesus. He has no thoughts about himself any longer. All he can think about is helping to save this man. Either they both live. Or they both die. He picks up the stranger in the snow ❄️ and carries the dead man. Now Sundar is walking slow. The temperatures are dropping and Sundar is about to freeze to death. Walking step by step slowly, he comes across another body. He looks and the man is frozen to death. It was the other man who walked ahead. A stones throw away from the village and warmth.
Sundar was in shock. Even though he was more slow he made it to the village alive. And the dead man he carried became alive. Their body warmth saved their lives. Meanwhile the other man perished.
Sometimes, following God and helping others slows us down. But in the end it may be that selflessness that saves us.

Wow!! What God accomplished with Sundar's life is truly amazing. This is one of my favorite Christian Heroes Then & Now books.
One thing I especially enjoyed is that he did not become a westernized American Christian. He became a Christian, and remained Indian. If only more people in foreign country's could see: Christianity isn't just a western religion: it's a global religion for everyone and anyone.

This is a cool guy that I’ve always admired but didn’t know much of his story. I love his passion for reaching Indians through their own culture & understanding of religion. A few crazy impossible miracles that had God’s signature all over - like when he escapes from the well in Tibet. CRAZY. I laughed during the stories of him hiking through the Himalayas barefoot and simply cannot imagine how tough his feet must have been.

He said to other Indians that they should not discourage westerners from becoming missionaries to the East, not because the East needs them, but because the western church needs those missionaries to keep it alive since there is little persecution and suffering in the west. I’m going to keep pondering this idea.

I think that Sundar Singh is an amazing example and that he followed his calling, but not everyone is called to such drastic aestheticism as he was. He said over and over that he felt called to be like his Lord in not having a place to lay his head and to be like the disciples in the first missionary send off, without a purse or extra shirt. And I don’t think every Believer is called to this, but I know that years ago I would’ve been tempted to become legalistic that everyone needs to be like this. Interesting to think of how I might have read this a long time ago and how it would’ve effected me and now I can just enjoy it and praise Jesus for this man’s ministry. PTL

Also I wonder if he knew E Stanley Jones and/ or Gandhi?! Will search E Stanley books for this answer

This book started out great, but, I have to say, this was not my favorite book in this series. I'm not sure if it was the way it was written, or if the story just didn't interest me, but I am giving this book 3.25/5 stars. At the beginning, it was very captivating, but, as the story went on, I got very bored with it. Definitely not the best book in this series.

he literally never wore shoes - ever

I found this one a little less compelling because it didn’t really speak to any of his struggles emotionally or with sin, and so he felt almost not human in that way. but he lived a most admirable life! well spent.

Very inspiring book of an Indian missionary who was willing to physically suffer for to share the Gospel all over the world. My favorite quote from the book on page 131 is: At another meeting someone in the audience asked him, "How can my poor prayers help anyone when I am so sinful?" Sundar replied, "The sun draws salt water from the sea, yet when it falls again to the earth, the water is clear and pure and drinkable. The sun has cleaned it. So it is with God and our prayers." After reading this book, I was inspired to look up some of Sundar's books on the internet. I found a free version of his book Reality and Religion on the web. I like his simple way of explaining God's truths.

Sundar Singh's story is very different yet inspiring. His life story draws many parallels with that of Paul. As a Malaysian, it's nice to know he's been to Penang before ^^

So, I’ll begin by saying that this particular series of books is very informative, but only relatively well-written. The narrative of this book was, although fascinating, lacking in character. I always find these books a little forced-feeling—not to say that they are, I just always feel they are a little too stiff.
There were a couple pretty gory scenes that, although they weren't described in any sort of vibrant detail, kinda made me wanna puke.
The characters were rather shallow and you never got to know any side-character very well. Sundar had a little more detail put into his character, but wasn’t as bursting with personality as I believe he probably was.
So, if you’re looking for a brief, informative read on the life of a great missionary, then this is certainly that.

Good grief! These people. So this guy is an Indian who walked around in cold and even in London in bare feet wearing a robe. About 100 years ago, Sundar Singh became a believe through a Presbyterian missionary in N. India. He was a mystic-evangelist, in the category of John the Baptist. He died young probably because of how he had battered his body. The book read like how Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians--thrown in a well to die, stoned, beaten, hiking in snow in bare feet to Tibet. He had a real burden for Tibet. He would go there via hiking through the Himalayas. I had the thought last night, "He led a number of Tibetans to the Lord, but like what happened in Korea-not much lasting fruit and rather oppression by the Chinese in Tibet and destruction of the church in N. Korea."

I love this series, and I would give this volume 3.5 stars. I feel like the biographies of those lesser-documented faith heroes in the series where the author(s) have to take more creative license are a bit weaker in details and dialogue than the other accounts covered in the series.

Still, overall, a very encouraging account of a Christian mystic and preacher I was less familiar with. I love this series as it makes me aware of these faithful brothers and sisters that I can then study more about if desired.

This novel is an account of the life of Sadhu Sundar Singh, a Christian missionary known the world over. It describes many memorable and thrilling experiences in the Sadhu's life from his acceptance of Jesus as his personal saviour to his disappearance in the Tibetan region on his last missionary journey there.

The Sadhu's love for Christ and people, and commitment to his personal calling is made evident throughout the book and is an inspiring example to Christians everywhere.

The book's writing style is simple and accessible which makes the book quick and easy to read.

What a life! Spending the 40 years God gave him to spread the gospel in India, Tibet, Nepal, and to the extremities of the earth, Sundar Singh was truly an inspirational character. I really enjoyed this biography and the voice actor reading the book. May God raise up many more men and women with a heart like Sundar’s, trusting God, loving their neighbour, sharing the good news and remaining focused till the end, no matter the cost.

Really interesting... I just wish there were more quotes from him about his faith--his spoke about how the Christianity English missionaries were bringing to India was too English, but I don't feel that his views on the Indian church were explained as much as I would like. (I don't know if that makes sense lol). His commitment to Jesus and willingness to give up everything for the sake of the gospel was beautiful, though, and some of the stories were really amazing!

I wasn't sure what to expect with this biography, but I was very impressed! Sundar's devotion to God and wisdom far surpassed that of most Christians. He was inspiring how he never gave up, no matter the circumstances he faced -- A lesson in stepping out in faith and seeking God at every turn that we all should learn. 4.5 stars.

This might be the first book I have read about a missionary to India and Tibet. It is an encouraging account and an example for all missionaries. We are all missionaries and should spread the gospel to our neighbors, friends, family, and to the utter most parts of the World. Sundar did this. He is an example of surrendering his life to God in the midst of verbal and physical persecution.

I’ve read quite a number of the Benge biographies. This is one of the best. Sundar Singhs story is quite powerful. From avid Christian persecutor to even more avid Christian, his transformation led to the spread of the gospel in Tibet and other remote areas in the early 1900s. This against massive persecution, even being poisoned by his own family. So many amazing stories here.

While written for a youth audience, these quick read books contain great lessons and wisdom on "Christian Heroes: Then and Now". I encourage those of us not quite the "youthful audience" these are intended for, to not miss reading them and gleaning the truths and encouragment within their pages.

This book was superb!

My kids kept saying ‘ I can’t believe we haven’t heard of this guy.’ Sundar’s story will captivate your hearts, and have you contemplating what it really means to give up your life for Christ. I’m so glad I read this book with my family.

My new role model. I love him so much and want to be just like him (I'm definitely not lol). Bonus, we share a birthday! How cool is that?? I can't wait to read books actually written by him, not just about him. He is so cool.

Interesting Christian biography. As with all the series, it's pretty well written. Loved the different perspective of a native missionary. My kids enjoyed it as well.
