Hilary McPhee describes the works she chose for this anthology as international, political and engaged. I'm really not sure about engaged, but most of them are engaging. A number have exotic locations which I guess is the international bit. Sometimes it enriches the story and sometimes not. I liked Drusilla Modjeska's 'The Bliss of Arrival'.
I'm getting a good feel for contemporary Australian writing and respect McPhee's judgement.Gerald Murmane's Angel Song was so boring I didn't finish, so maybe I missed something. Cate Kennedy's Tender was my favourite. It spoke to me of my own generation and the character of women I have known.
