A Cord of Three Strands, A Story of God's Woven Grace -- the true story of three women struggling, searching, and finding God's redemption and grace despite obstacles and heart-wrenching choices.
First Peggy, a middle aged woman, devoted to God and to her husband, Mitch. Peggy has lived with the heavy burden of longing for 18 long years. Her longing? To be a mother. Infertility time after time has interrupted her hopes and dreams, and at times caused her to question her faith in her loving God.
Second Tricia, a young, rebellious teenager who has lost her first love, Jesus. She has stepped away temporarily from her deep faith in Christ, and finds that even temporary disobedience has great consequences.
Third Hilarie, the baby girl who brings both love and light to all. Through Hilarie, God is writing His redemptive story for the world to see. And the effects of this story, and Hilarie's love, will change lives, heal wounds, and bind together the three strands in perfect unity.
Wow, what a beautiful story of God’s detailed and gracious work in our everyday lives.
This book is considered a “creative nonfiction,” book that tells a true story with creative liberties in specific scenes.
I read through this in just a few hours because the story was full of hope, love, forgiveness, and just the a beautiful glimpse of our amazing God.
It made it even better that the author is from Mississippi and her daughter is the same age that I am.
I highly recommend this beautiful book to anyone who sometimes struggles with shame and regret. It will fill you with hope and remind you of the great love our God has for each of us.
Nice read on a weekend. This is a story of rebellion, hurt, shame, disappointment, patience, and much love based on the co-authors life. Tricia, a musically gifted teenager decides to take a year off between high school and college to rebel against her family and her values. An unexpected pregnancy and the love of so many around Tricia helps her face her challenges and to give her daughter up for adoption. Once Tricia realizes that her faith in God is what is important, she dedicates her life to supporting other teenagers who are faced with equally difficult circumstances.
Peggy the adoptive mother is filled with joy to have this opportunity to have a daughter after being disappointed so many times in the adoption process. She tries to provide Tricia with her daughter's development and accomplishments until Tricia finally askes to stop.
Hilarie the daughter learns about her biological mother and finally meets her. The love of mothers, daughter, and God is the main strand of this book. There is hope for those mothers who are experiencing rebellious teenagers.
I really liked this book! One of my friends won this book from Goodreads and after they read it they gave it to me. I put it off for awhile because typically I am not a huge fan of non-fiction. However, it was driving me nuts sitting on my shelf. I'm glad I finally read it, as it was a fast easy read. Read it in one afternoon/evening after church. I would recommend this book to anyone :)
I received this book for free as part of the FirstReads Giveaway program. This book was a little too religious for me but other than that I enjoyed it. I thought it had a good message. It was a very touching story. I am glad that I won this book!
I can't say enough about how well Sara takes true stories about what God has done in people's life and puts it into writing! I have read every one of her books! God is truly using her to share what He has done in different people's lives. Knowing Sara personally, I know she puts everything into making sure she properly shares these stories to glorify God!
I won this book in a Goodreads contest, and when I opened the package I was immediately impressed with both the outside book jacket and the interior design. This book probably has one of the prettiest and most "appropriate" book covers I've ever seen. It has the hand of God emerging from the heavens, holding together a rope (a cord) of three strands. This book is about just that—how God's hand binds together the lives of Tricia, Peggy and Hilarie, who each represent one strand of a cord, in order to show an example of God's love and grace.
A CORD OF THREE STRANDS by Sara Berry and Tricia Robbins is based on the true story of a "good Christian girl" named Tricia who goes through a period of rebelliousness after she graduates high school. Soon after she starts college, Tricia discovers she's pregnant, and is overcome with emotions. She had just begun getting reacquainted with God through encouragement from friends at school, such as Jessica and Shane. In the end, Tricia "comes back to God," she gives her baby girl (Hilarie) up for adoption, and she also finds her calling by giving talks to audiences of teens about her experience.
Another main character of the book is Peggy. She and her husband Mitch had tried for several years to conceive a child, but several surgeries and lost dollars later, they still were childless. They finally decided to try to adopt a baby, but that too always had one sad ending after another. After 18 years, this couple still had no children and Peggy, a devout Christian, began to strongly question God's plans for her in this situation. His plan is finally revealed when the adoption for baby Hilarie does goes through, and then as the years pass Hilarie grows up to be a sweet Christian girl … and winds up contacting her birth mother, Tricia.
The three females begin to have get-togethers, and all of them come to the realization that God has His own plans for everyone, and they all feel fortunate that His plan included the binding of these "strands" to make one strong cord.
I really wanted to give this book more stars, especially since I received it for free and wanted to help show my gratitude, but I just can't give it more as I thought it was "OK" and not one star more of "I liked it." (I didn't DISlike it, but again, thought it was just "OK.")
I like that it's based on a true story, and I like the "overall lesson" the book is trying to teach, but unfortunately I had a lot more dislikes than likes when reading this book.
One of things I didn't care for was this book was a tad too "religious-e" for my taste in several places by the sometimes seemingly "over the top" words and/or phrases the authors used. I'm a Christian who prefers religious messages to be delivered in a different manner.
I found several grammatical errors in this book, which is something that will always make me lower the rating of a book. I also disliked toward the end of the book, how years passed from one chapter to the next in a "blunt" fashion, without really saying too much about what happened in the years in between. An example of the years flying by is in one chapter Hilarie is six years old, then the next chapter she's 10, and then the next chapter she's at least 16 because she can drive a car.
I want to end on a positive note, as I have great respect for other writers and the amount of work and passion that goes into writing and "creating" a book. I want to say that I do think people who are not put-off by the kind of items that I stated above that bothered me, and who have read a lot of inspirational/Christian books—will probably enjoy A CORD OF THREE STRANDS. I also am willing sometime down the line to read another book written by either of these authors.
I am a GoodReads winner and I have to admit that at first I was not too excited about receiving this book. But after a friend reminded me that things do happen for a reason, I dove right in. It was a really easy read and I ended up reading it in two days! At the beginning I was a little put off by how cliche the story was, but then I realized it was based on a true story and that completely changed. It was a very powerful prodigal son story that showed extraordinary faith during the darkest (and I mean darkest!) of times.
I plan to pass this book along, despite the fact that I would like to keep it because the author signed it personally. There are a lot of people in my life that I know could really be lifted up by this story. Thank you so much Sarah Berry!
I got this book from goodreads but between changing jobs I packed it away and forgot about it. I am so glad I found this book! This is a wonderful story of three women struggling to deal with the obstacles they are faced with. This is the kind of book to read on a rainy afternoon when you are feeling down. I think I cried my way through a whole box of tissues but it was completely worth every minute.
A story about three women struggling, searching and finding Good's redemption and grace despite obstacles and heart wrenching choices. This book was a good read it shows all no matter where we are in our christian walk how we can get so much farther and so much more out of this life we have been given by trusting and relying on God each step of the way. And all the while not forgetting our rock, our Father.
Favorite book! The is a story of redemption plain and simple. It can minister to people no matter what they've been through. It made me laugh and cry!! It was convicting and encouraging all at the same time.
I am a goodreads winner and recieved this book quite promptly. Some parts about family and community are very beautiful in this book. But other parts I was distraught by. If you are not a full out 'my whole life is about my religion' person then don't buy this book.
