Chris Bradford is the bestselling author of the Young Samurai, Bodyguard and Soul Series.
Chris is renowned for his inspiring author events and ‘method writing’ style. For his award-winning Young Samurai series, he trained in samurai swordmanship, karate, ninjutsu and earned his black belt in Zen Kyu Shin Taijutsu.
For his BODYGUARD series, Chris embarked on an intensive close protection course to become a qualified professional bodyguard.
And for the Soul Prophecy trilogy, Chris travelled extensively to experience first-hand the cultures featured in the story – from living with the Shona people in Zimbabwe, to trekking the Inca trail, to meditating in a Buddhist temple amid the mountains of Japan.
His books have been published in more than 25 languages and been nominated for 30+ book awards, winning among others the Northern Ireland Book Award 2011, the Hampshire Book Award 2014 and the Brilliant Book Award 2014. Young Samurai: The Way of the Warrior was deemed one of Puffin’s 70 Best Ever Books, alongside Treasure Island and Robin Hood.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is about Taka who is desperate to be a black belt and what he is prepared to do in order to achieve this. He has failed before but heads out on a mission with a friend. The book builds up suspense and keeps you wanting to turn the page to find out what a happens next . If you enjoy reading adventure books you would enjoy this book but really good for dyslexics as the chapters are not too long and grammar not overly complicated.
--I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.--
I found this to be a quick fun read. The book definitely is geared towards the younger reader, say about a 3rd/4th grade reading level. So this book is a fairly short one, but the message sent through this book packs a pretty good punch. Taka as a young Ninja wanna be is desperate to advance to become a Ninja. Though due the fact that he failed the first time, and thanks to some bullies he is afraid he is not cut out to be a Ninja. But circumstances arise and Taka along with his friend Cho rise to the occasion, and prove that to do the right thing you don't have to be a Ninja. The message of not giving up and pursuing your goals no matter if you have a set back I think is a great message to send to kids, even if they can not see the message from the book that they are reading. This book is on my list to pass along to my 3rd grade daughter who I thing will also enjoy the story.
Ninja- First Mission by Chris Bradford, illustrated by Sonia Leong – 2nd grade and up – Adventure – Interesting beginning to a series, written in text easy for children with dyslexia but honestly for any child who wants to read an adventure with a boy who is the underdog and must learn to believe in himself.
