Cognitive therapy of the personality disorders has continued to advance since the initial publication of this landmark work. Now Aaron T. Beck and his distinguished colleagues present an extensively rewritten and updated second edition, incorporating over a decade's worth of significant theoretical, clinical, and empirical gains. In one volume, the authors offer both a comprehensive overview of scientific knowledge and a detailed guide to individualized intervention. Practitioners gain essential tools for effectively managing their most complex, challenging cases - and providing real help to patients who once might have been considered untreatable.
Timely and authoritative, this indispensable volume belongs on the desks of clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, counselors, and other mental health practitioners, as well as students and residents in these fields. It will serve as a core text in advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses and in psychiatric residency programs.
Aaron Temkin Beck was an American psychiatrist who was a professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. He is regarded as the father of cognitive therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). His pioneering methods are widely used in the treatment of clinical depression and various anxiety disorders. Beck also developed self-report measures for depression and anxiety, notably the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), which became one of the most widely used instruments for measuring the severity of depression. In 1994 he and his daughter, psychologist Judith S. Beck, founded the nonprofit Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, which provides CBT treatment and training, as well as research. Beck served as President Emeritus of the organization up until his death. Beck was noted for his writings on psychotherapy, psychopathology, suicide, and psychometrics. He published more than 600 professional journal articles, and authored or co-authored 25 books. He was named one of the "Americans in history who shaped the face of American psychiatry", and one of the "five most influential psychotherapists of all time" by The American Psychologist in July 1989. His work at the University of Pennsylvania inspired Martin E.P. Seligman to refine his own cognitive techniques and later work on learned helplessness.
p.252 Image Preservation Narcissistic individuals believe that "image is everything" because it is the armor of their self-worth. Checking and maintaining their image is a paramount concern, and they perceive themselves always on display.
Aaron Beck has spent enough time with patients to know how they think and see the world. Emotional disorders disrupt the cognition of the patient , as a therapist improves the cognition of the patient; his emotional state also will improve. This book is necessary for mental care staff and also as a self-help book for those who sometimes lose control of their emotions. It introduces anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, differences between them, and also ways to take control of these disorders.
I love textbooks on cognitive therapy, so this gets five stars by default. Great overview of the personality disorders, however, and how to use cognitive therapy to work with them.
