Now in it's fifth printing, Fuck You Heroes is photographer Glen E. Friedman's uncompromising look at the radicals of youth culture in the extreme worlds of skateboarding, punk and rap. From day one behind his camera, Friedman has had an unerring ability to be in the right place ahead of everybody else. He was a teenaged photographer for 'Thrasher' and 'Skateboarder' magazines, he created the seminal one-hit punk fanzine 'My Rules', worked with Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies in their early days, wrote for Maximum Rock & Roll, did street promotion for Def Jam's west coast office and shot sleeve photos for everyone from Minor Threat to Public Enemy. This book presents the photographic distillation of Glen's it's about the perfect shots of the people who live by the touchstones of intensity and integrity.
Glen E. Friedman, (Born 1962) considered one of the most important photographers of his generation, became well known for working with such rebellious artists as Fugazi, Black Flag, Ice-T, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Misfits, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Run-D.M.C, KRS-1, and Public Enemy, as well as old school skateboarders like: Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Alan "Ollie" Gelfand, Duane Peters, and Stacy Peralta, among others. Many of his photographs are recognized as the subjects' definitive portraits. His graphic documents of the movement in culture reveal the science of defiance upon which all are based. Friedman's photos reflect the spirit of progression and angst that defined an era. Not only was he in the right places at an extraordinary number of appropriate times, Friedman has helped define the moment and movements he was caught up in. His process was much more incendiary than it was documentary. According to Henry Rollins "The bottom line is that he was there at the beginning of so much cool stuff in so many different areas it's not funny."
"Inspiring people, with integrity and rebelliousness."
For the past quarter century, Friedman has been doing just that.
- Los Angeles Times
"One of the greats of his generation."
- Washington Post
"The most prolific photographer of his generation."
- American Institute of Graphic Arts
"The esoteric political and aesthetic conscience of his generation..."
- Juxtapoz magazine
Glen E. Friedman's captivating images demonstrate his remarkable eye for raw reality, talent and aesthetic beauty. He is, without doubt, one of this generation's most discerning and important photographers, Friedman has documented like no one else.
There was punk. There was skating. There was rap. And there was Glen Friedman, photographing all of it. When I first looked at this book, I was astounded by all the photographs I remembered seeing in Thrasher magazine of his when I was 11. I then realized all the punk album covers he shot. The Circle Jerk's album with the cymbals in the urinal. Check You Head, by the Beastie Boys. He's a master of the fisheye lense, and his black and white is raw, and gritty. Dispite the fact the title my turn off some guests in your home. This is a great coffee table read, and a must-have for any skater, punk music listener, or early rap music listener.
Back before everyone had a 50 mega pixel digital camera running around taking macro shots and long before Photoshop there was Glen Friedman, and long after people have 100 mega pixel eye balls running around taking pictures of some new planet they found there will still be Glen Friedman’s work captured in this wonderful classic book that truly captures some very special musical moments in time.
Five stars...just because every childhood dream boy is in it! Take a peek just to see how scrawny Ice T used to be. Oh..and..well the photography is pretty amazing too.
