Remember Me?

Rate this book
For Chad and Jeff, summer camp had been a time of discovering each other and making promises. One of those promises was to stay in touch and keep seeing each other. But Chad never called, and Jeff remained behind to finish high school. Chad broke Jeff’s heart, but both men suffered. Chad couldn’t forgive himself for being a coward and not standing up to his parents, and Jeff wouldn’t let anyone into his heart again to hurt him.

A year after Katrina and ten years after that fateful summer, Chad and Jeff meet again, only this time it’s in the ER of a local hospital. Chad is the attending doctor and Jeff is an assault victim, on the brink of death. Chad is once again swept into the past by the only man he’s ever loved, and like before, Chad makes promises to Jeff—promises he will keep, or else.

When Jeff awakes from a coma, he finds the man who broke his heart sitting in his hospital room. Angry, confused and scared, Jeff has no defense against this man. And he also has no one else to care for him, only Chad.

After all these years, Jeff’s dream has finally come true, Chad is back in his life. But for how long? And is Jeff willing to open his heart to the man who broke it?

(1)gay romance

I’m from New Orleans, that’s N’awlins for those of you who speak the language. I grew up in the Riverbend, or Carrollton, for the old timers, but was a Quarter rat from the age of 11, taking 3 buses to go to art class on Burgundy Street at the Cabrini Doll Museum and NORD center. I attended University of New Orleans and have a BA in Fine Art. My mother worked at Tulane University, six blocks from our house and when we were kids my brother and I parked cars in our driveway for the Saints games at Tulane Stadium. We could get six cars down the drive, two on the front lawn, and two on the street and we only charged $2 a car. We made enough to buy a coupla roast beef po’boys at Comeaux’s on Hickory St. and a snowball over at Williams Snow Ball Stand. We lived 1/2 a block from a cemetery, but doesn’t everyone in N’awlins? We used to watch jazz funerals from our front porch.

Now, my family lives in Katy, Texas. I have a “real” job, a truly supportive and understanding husband, two incredible kids, and a slightly neurotic dog. We used to have a guinea pig, but the dog killed it. Did I say slightly?

My son is 15 and has Asperger’s Syndrome (high functioning Autism) and Crohn’s Disease, and is a constant lesson in patience, acceptance and managing expectations. He’s super smart, loves video games, fencing, movies, building with legos, and hanging around the house. Like me, he believes that it’s all about him. Sometimes, I wonder if I don’t have Asperger’s, too. Oh, and he’s very handsome.

My daughter, 13, is so creative it’s scary- she loves to paint, draw manga and anima, build dioramas with any box she can get her hands on, create worlds with legos and then make movies with them, sculpt people, animals and objects with those little twist ties from the grocery store, does pottery, and wants to be a lifeguard. And she’s smart, too. And
beautiful, inside and out.

I write for a few hours in the evenings and on weekends as much as I can, without neglecting my family. (That laughter you hear is my husband) I attend a critique group, and do whatever the kids are into at the time.

Emotional involvement, be it for a personal decision or a professional one, can be very risky. Chad found out about the personal consequences - loneliness - when he decided not to call Jeff, the boy he first kissed at summer camp. When Jeff turns up in Chad’s ER years later, Chad faces a professional dilemma that, were it not for his past with Jeff, would be nonexistent. Given Chad’s reaction to seeing Jeff again, a man he never forgot and clearly still has feelings for, I can see why he does what looks like total insanity. The fact that Chad’s action is shortsighted, has all kinds of consequences, and hurts Jeff yet again is the basis for renewed contact between two men who should have been together in the first place – except Chad wasn’t ready to face the truth back then.

This was a nice, short story that worked well enough. It's more of a 3.5 star read rounded up. I liked the story, and some of the scenes were very sweet, especially towards the end. I could have given it more but it would have needed another 50 or so pages or to give a bit more on their past.

It's a sort of typical thing with two lovers reconnecting after years apart. But, it didn't show us much of their past, so I can't say if they were sweet or anything back then. Of course there was a big of anger, but I never felt like it was there. That part felt a bit flat. I like emotion in books like this.

It was a nice story though, so I would suggest giving it a quick read. It's not long.

This is a story about the one who got away. Actually, the correct phrasing would be the one who ran away.

Jeff and Chad meet at summer camp when they are both in their teens. A quick, secret relationship develops and they both fall hard as teens are prone to do. They are each other's firsts in every sense of the word. On the last day of camp, Chad makes promises to Jeff... promises that he doesn't keep. Jeff's young heart gets broken and he vows, as a teenager, never to allow someone to hurt him like that again. Chad never forgets Jeff nor does he forgive himself for walking away from the only person he could ever love. His reasons for not contacting Jeff are justified in the beginning but the justifications do not ease the guilt or the fact that he walked away without a word.

Ten years later, Chad is an ER physician. An attack victim has been rushed to the hospital and is not expected to survive the night. Imagine Chad's shock when he realizes that the patient he is treating is Jeff. Jeff remains in a coma for two months with Chad only leaving his side long enough to do his shift at the hospital and to rush home for a few hours of sleep each night. He vows to make amends for walking away ten years earlier. He hopes, during those long two months, that Jeff will wake up and not only forgive him for the pain he caused when they were teens but to love him back the way that Chad has never stopped loving him. First, Jeff has to survive.

When Jeff finally awakes, he's still bitter toward Chad. He doesn't want him around or to be part of his life. Slowly Jeff realizes that Chad not only helped him survive but he has been taking care of him in other ways as well. It's a slow process but Jeff opens his heart again and allows Chad back inside.

This is a nice story about righting old wrongs and reconnecting with an old love. The journey to forgiveness is not an easy one but it's worth it in the end.

A nice, quick read. Roughly about 100 pages or so. My only complaint is that I wish it would have been a bit longer and that certain aspects would have been fleshed out more. Otherwise, a very nice story.

This is part of Where The Heart is, a series of shorts by various authors.

Ten years ago Chad broke Jeff's heart by leaving and never gave Jeff a call he promised; even after they spent such lovely nights together. Then, fate plays its part where Jeff is brought to the E.R. where Chad works, his life hanging on a thread. Chad realizes he still has feeling for Jeff ... so he makes a promise this time to stay with Jeff and makes things right. But when Jeff wakes up from a coma, will he able to forgive Chad and embraces their future?

I love story about "reunion", "reconciliation", or "the one who got away" theme. This just carries that theme perfectly. When Chad realizes who is being brought to his ER, a man whom he loved ten years ago, who never really left his mind (and heart) ... and how he stays with Jeff afterwards, waiting patiently until Jeff wakes up, it's so touching.

I also like the fact that Jeff doesn't welcome Chad easily. Oh, no, that man broke his heart and he has all the right to be angry. Often in this kind of story, the other man will forgive easily. I'm glad that it's not the case here *grin*. Because when they finally get together again, it's just so sweet.

A beautiful sweet story that I just re-read it after I finished it the first time. I'm sucker for 'first love never die'-type story and this novella is just that. What I particularly like from this story is that Jeff doesn't accept Chad right away. They didn't hit the sack the minute they were reunited. Instead, they talked about what happened, and Chad gave Jeff time to think whether to accept his apology or not.

Not great but not bad either. Jeff isn't even awake for a large portion of the book so we get to know Chad pretty well. Formerly of the a-hole club but now making amends. Both of their existences are fairly bleak and super lonely so I did enjoy the "found my lost love" aspect of the book. Sweet read.

Another medical drama that I completely enjoyed. This is also a Second Chance romance. There are ethical issues raised and issues of the heart. A lost love suddenly found in the worse condition possible. The cold distant Doctor all of a sudden has his heart pierced by ghost of Cupid's arrow.

He lies, misleads, confiscates, kidnaps the belongings inanimate & living of his former flame. It comes from a place of care but isn't it still wrong? Will his sleeping beauty be awakened with a kiss that he returns or a slap of outrage. Initially this is told from one point of view. The story gets even better when the other PIC comes into play.

This was an unexpected wonderful find that I recommend highly. I've read paperbacks by this author and enjoyed them as well.

Almost everyone remembers their last summer camp, a time for making special friends and discovering things about yourself. Dr. Chad Wright and Jeff Stone met at summer camp and fell instantly in love. They made promises to each other. Everyone makes promises to keep in touch and not forget. Jeff believed the promises Chad made when they were teens. Unfortunately, the next time they see each other, it’s ten years later and Jeff is unconscious on a gurney in an emergency room with Chad looking down upon him. Remember Me is the story of their second chance.

Remember Me takes place in post Katrina New Orleans and much of the story evolves at Jeff’s bedside while Chad prays for his recovery. Jeff is in the hospital because of an attack that is so severe it could cost him his life. Lorenz weaves the story of their last summer together through Chad’s memories. The relationship the two young boys had is a sweet one, like most summer loves, but when camp ends so does their contact.

Remember Me is a brief glimpse into Chad and Jeff’s struggle to come to terms with their past relationship and find a way to trust each other and build a future. The characters are engaging and the images of post Katrina New Orleans add atmosphere. Still, I would have enjoyed more detail in the story. For example, why was Jeff attacked? Did Chad ever talk to his parents about Jeff? Do they even know that Chad is gay? These are a few of the questions that Lorenz leaves unanswered in Remember Me.

Chad is a Dr. in emergency in New Orleans a year after Katrina. A young man comes in badly beaten when Chad realizes it's his first love from summer camp. He had promised Jeff he'd keep in touch but fear of coming out and his family's pressures meant he never did. Jeff nearly dies and Chad feels responsible for him and all the old feelings come back. He steps in and clears out Jeff's apartment, takes custody of his cat and tells hospital staff they are partners so he can get medical information. When Jeff wakes up a few months later he's pissed that Chad would take over his life and he's still upset about him never calling. However he soon starts to realize that Chad did a good thing and his cat would have been sent to the pound and he would have flunked out of school rather than being withdrawn. I really liked how Chad worked through things as he spent time with Jeff during his coma for those two months, realizing that his behaviour with guys was because he'd never gotten over Jeff. I also liked that when Jeff woke up he was at first upset but then realized that Chad had done a good thing helping him and decided he wasn't going to let another chance at happiness slip through this fingers. It was a fairly quick read but I enjoyed the two guys and you hoped they'd get a second chance at happiness. It would have been nice to see them further down the road, but it's a nice hopeful HEA ending.

This story was a little sad in the beginning when it appeared that Jeff would not survive his brutal assault. Chad hadn't seen Jeff for over 10 years, but he didn't want the only man he'd ever loved to die with no one by his side. While waiting to see if and when Jeff would regain consciousness, Chad was filled with regret for breaking Jeff's heart but was also determined to make it up to him any way he could. The little things Chad did like taking care of Jeff's cat and sitting by his hospital bed reading to him while Jeff was unconscious were very touching. Flashbacks showed us how much they had cared for each other as teenagers and how deeply it hurt Jeff when Chad walked away. But fate had a way of bringing them back together and giving them a new beginning, so it ended on a sweet note.

After Chad and Jeff fall in love at summer camp they don't see each other for ten years.

Jeff is badly beaten and almost dies. Chad is the ER doctor and remembered Jeff instantly.

They have a sweet HEA which includes Murray, Jeff's cat!

Really enjoyable story, just slightly put of by Jeff's endearment in the final paragraph... It came from nowhere?

I like it. First half of the book was fantastic. But from the moment Jeff awakened from coma, I felt like the book lost a little of it's potencial. And it was a bit rushed. I couldn't quite believe Jeff forgive Chad so easy.

Nice story about 2 guys being reunited after many years. Did have a few moments where I had to push the "I believe" button (being able to take care of medical and personal things with no proof he was allowed to) but I liked the pace and story.

Very sweet (occasionally a bit too) m/m romance about a doctor who recognizes a nearly dead man in the ER as his first love from ten years ago.

Doctors will throw up their hands over the ethics presented in this book. When you can suspend belief over that, it turns out to be a really heart warming story.
