This is the 2nd book I have read in the series though this is the third & it wasn't as good as Stay since there were lot of unsaid words between these two and a lot of mis-communication.

Maggie was the housekeeper at Daniel's family's ranch and Daniel had feelings for her despite the fact that Maggie was married & when her husband abandoned Maggie & her infant daughter they shared a kiss but Daniel left knowing that Maggie had things to sort through & thought she was still in love with her husband, that wasn't the case but Maggie left as well.

The book opens three years later & Maggie has been working in the city, living with her daughter and knows that her husband died and was a bigamist, she goes back to the ranch & goes to tell her husband's sister the truth & runs into Daniel who is back after three years & a changed man.

Daniel loved her & when he sees she is still wearing her wedding ring, thinks that she still loves her sainted husband, who was a cheater, a thief & abandoned her, Maggie does nothing to correct his assumption. She knew the reality of her husband but she did not want to be like her mother abandoning her responsibilities.

She gets pregnant & they try to work things through, while dealing with Daniel's ghosts & the three years he spent doing secret spy type work and Maggie's insecurities.

This is a book is part of a series that I began to read last year: The Men of the Double C Ranch. Here we find the story of Daniel Clay and Maggie Greene.

We begin several years earlier when we see Daniel leaving the ranch while Maggie stays behind. Unfortunately, a relationship for both of them is not in the cards this time because Maggie is married to someone else and has a child and Daniel, well he is not happy because he can't have her.

Now three years have gone by and Maggie and her daughter J.D. are heading back to the ranch to deliver some bad news. Her philandering ex is dead and she has to tell his sister who is married to Daniel's brother. The worst part about this situation is that her ex is not only dead, but she has to face the family that he stole money from and this is not something she is going to enjoy.

While she is there, she has a romantic interlude with Daniel which causes something unforeseen and ultimately brings Maggie back to the ranch to stay and begin a life with the guy who can't seem to find it in his heart to love. For both Daniel and Maggie, this is going to be a long, tough road before either of them realizes that being together and loving each other is exactly where both of them needs to be. Each has their own set of baggage that will need to be dealt with before their hearts truly open up and lets each other inside.

I must admit there were moments in the story when I wanted to knock some sense into both the characters. Sometimes ones hardheadedness can be just a bit exasperating. If it were me, I probably would have told Daniel "what for" early on but since this was Maggie's story, I just had to sit back and read where she was going to go with this.

4 stars. Another story of the Clay men this time it's Daniels turn. Maggie is the housekeeper for the Double-C. Daniel has always had feelings for her but stayed away as she was married. When her husband abandons her with a newborn child they share a kiss but know it can go no further as she is still married so Daniel makes the decision to leave his home. Three years later and everything has changed on Daniel's return, Maggie is also at the ranch visiting Jamie with news of her brother and Maggie's husband Joe. After one night spent together they go their separate ways but that night changes their lives forever. Another good read in this series with plenty of will they won't they get together I love the characters in these books and their interconnecting lives. Recommended read.

I liked this book mostly because I liked Maggie's character and JD a lot. There were some things that I thought were a bit confusing and just not explained yet, like what exactly Daniel had done for his job in the 3 years he had been gone and also that Angeline was showing up at the end of the book. But overall I really like this series and just really feel like it would be a fun family to be a part of.
