Feel like the story's really starting to pick up again!

Hohoho, hate me but I kinda like Sho- he’s edgy. Hopefully he’s still not psycho crazy (although he probably is) but I want to see and know more about him.

Just a handful of bullet points this time, because I can't be fussed to write a real review of this one.
- We go through yet another cycle where Kyo says something that will upset Misao--this time, that she won't be able to accompany him on a long trip to the tengu (?) village--she cries, and Kyo says "just kidding!" I don't like that. It's getting repetitive, and feels cruel, like Kyo is deliberately playing with her because she's naive and/or he enjoys seeing her cry over him.
- Yawn.
- I continue to enjoy the occasional ponderings on different kinds of strength.
- I'm glad Yoh didn't end up being a creepy dad/father-in law. I spent the whole time he was around waiting for that shoe to drop, because it shows up so frequently in manga, but not this time. Good on ya, Sakurakouji.
Black Bird is fun to read, the art's pretty good, and it has a little spice and character to keep things fresh. But there isn't anything that elevates it above "decent, worth reading exactly once" status. There's nothing wrong with that! I'll definitely be reading it to the end to see how everything turns out, which is more than I can say for a lot of longer-running titles.

Kyo's father has made an unexpected reappearance in his life, after being missing for years. Misao and the others must try to approach him - despite the rumours surrounding his disappearance, and it's connection to the mysterious death of his wife Yuri, years before - in order to gain information on who is behind the mysterious attacks that have been occurring throughout the city.
3 - 3.5 stars.
I picked this up over a year ago, and JUST got around to reading it. So bad. -_-; (I have a pile of others from the same trip to the comic shop, too...) Bunny Drop must have put me off, since I picked it up in the same trip. :(
It's been so long since I read in this series, that I can't say how well this volume fits in with the tone of the preceding books. On it's own it's enjoyable enough to read. There's a on-going mystery going on, and we learn more about the Tengu and their society. We also learn more about the Daitengu's personal lives and histories, especially that of Kyo and his father, which makes for an intriguing back-story. A lot of it is back-story that allows us to learn more about what's going on behind the scenes, and character's motivations, that we didn't really know about.
(I've thought it before, and I'm still kind of thinking Kyo is a bit of an ass. But it's becoming more and more clear that he's (sadly) the best option Misao has as a love interest. There's Sho, who is kinda creepy . Or the priest-guy who is kind of a bigot, since what we see of the Tengu shows them as being, overall, fairly decent people. Other youkai species are still largely unknown at this point. Other than that... I guess there was the snake guy a few volumes back, who we know pretty much nothing about. At least overall, Kyo is pretty decent to her.)
Altogether, this is an interesting volume, and a necessary one to read with all the info we learn about (and how much the plot is pushed along). The newest char., Kyo's dad, Yoh, is likeable enough if a bit of a perv. Kyo comes by it honestly, it seems.
The back-story about he and Yuri might be a bit off-putting to some people, but it seems to have been handled well enough to balance out any creepy undertones.
The series so far is still interesting, so I plan to keep on reading. It's a good supernatural/horror-romance series.

4 stars dropped upon reread
Misao is so wishy washy in this volume. I know that is a consistent character arc for her, but I'm getting impatient with her. She is getting on my nerves and also that stuff at the end with Kyo skeeved me out. Kyo is just way too weird for me sometimes. It's a no for me. I'm still continuing on. This is the last volume I read, so I am curious about the rest of the series. There is some trepidation though.

Black Bird volume 10 by Kanoko Sakurakouji

I’ve finished the Black Bird books that I bought… and I need more so, so bad. That ending was fricking amazing. Sakurakouji is an amazing storyteller. The world she creates is beautiful. Being a gifted artist is amazing, but also being blessed with the amazing gift of storytelling makes her a double-threat (I’m sure she’s a triple-threat, but I don’t know much about her). I love the tengus. They will forever hold a special place in my heart as one of the best paranormal entities I’ve been introduced to. This isn’t the final volume of the series, but it feels like it to me because they only had volumes 7-10 at my bookstore and I only read mangas in the summer. I can’t wait to indulge myself next summer in the rest of the Black Bird series. This series is really heating up right now. We got a lot more insight into Kyo’s mom, who has hardly been mentioned in this series and Sho. Sho, you sly devil, you’re one of my favorite villains. Misao why is it when Sho is introduced again you start thinking about him and you know it pisses Kyo off. I would be mad to if I was in his shoes. Kyo… I love you, but tone down your jerkiness. Although since you admit to being a jerk I have respect for you. Most jerks won’t admit to being jerks. I love Black Bird and if you have never read manga before I suggest this be the one you try. This series is amazing and it won’t disappoint. It's the end... at least until I get my hand on these books next summer.

So Kyo’s father didn’t kill his wife.. she committed suicide due to the conflict of Sho becoming clan leader. Now that’s more interesting than what I initially thought. Sho is alive , and managed to kill the Nue clan , which had more questions than answers. But Misao lowkey pissed me off like , stop thinking about Sho for too seconds please. But Kaede being Roh’s daughter was a good twist I must say

This volume threw a lot of new elements into the pot and I'll have to see how it all turns out to figure out how well done it was. It was interesting to meet Kyo's father Yoh, and learn more of the backstory on his side. I was a bit disappointed with the misogyny in this volume, blaming the mother for all that went wrong in this family. Also Sho is back, which can't be a good thing. We shall see what kind of messed up plan he has this time.

I liked this one better than the last one. Although I'm kind of sick of the Sho plot line. And to be honest I don't get Misao's feelings towards him. She's scared of him and yet she is concerned for his welfare too.
He tried to rape her not once, but twice in this series. And sure he saved her life, but I don't think it makes up for the abductions and near rapes especially when he put her in the dangerous position to begin with.
It's hard for me to relate to Misao or even really like her. She has moments when I think she may not be so bad and then she starts crying again. (Seriously I think there might be more scenes where she has tears in her eyes than not.)
I can't say I like Kyo all that much either. He's borderline sadistic. Some of Kyo's dialogue is something you might expect from the dominant in BDSM erotica. Their relationship is not of equals. Maybe this will change as the story progresses, but I doubt it. I mean he is a demon.
I like the 8 Daitengu best. I find myself interested more in these supporting characters' stories than the main one. Some of their story is also being told in the extras which is probably why I like the bonus stories so much. The ones in Volume 9 and the first one in Volume 7 were especially good. The bonus story in this one was actually a Kyo/ Misao, but I really liked it.

I am so happy to report that Black Bird, Volume 10 returns to the root of this series, delivering an interesting story with depth. The feel of this volume is reminiscent of the earliest volumes that had character development and suspense to keep you mesmerized with the story. This is a vast improvement upon the last several volumes.
What makes this volume so interesting is the history of the two brothers, Sho and Kyo, and their parents. When Lord Yoh pops in for a surprise visit, he initially gets Kyo's feathers all ruffled up. Their relationship is strained, but with the help of Misao, the mystery behind Kyo's mother's death and father's disappearance is uncovered.
The person behind the recent human attacks is revealed, but honestly, who didn't see that one coming? The drama intensifies when the presumed dead drop in on the village. The immense power of their adversary puts fear into Kyo and the Daitengu. I can't wait to see the face-off.
I really like Lord Yoh's jovial character. I hope to see his badass side come out in the next volume. This series has got me excited again. However, Misao's incessant crying is really getting on my nerves. The love scenes are far from sexy. They're just weird. I hope the next volume is amazing.

I'm a bit torn, because I respect the fact that the author is keeping the character of the male lead, Kyo, a bit mean even after the romantic relationship is going. However, the things that he does are cruel and borderline abusive but presented as acceptable. It's OK to give him a mean side, but that actions he takes shouldn't be treated as acceptable in a relationship, or as something she deserved.

This will sort of be a catch-up review because I have forgotten to review all the other volumes as I've devoured this series pretty quickly. This volume is four stars for me.
I really do enjoy this series. Volumes 1 and 2 are a bit samey but once it gets a bit more "serious" the story improves a lot. However, I must warn new readers about potential triggers for sexual assault in the first few volumes. It's rather rife in the early volumes, both from the love interest Kyo (but, as it's a shoujo from 2008, it's portrayed as an OK thing? Which? No?) and a few of the antagonists, especially when . It's somewhat the nature of her power--demons want her blood for its healing abilities, but if they have sex with her they get super strong and powerful... After that, however, as Kyo and Misao become "official" it doesn't happen as frequently, if at all towards volume 10. Antagonists still want her blood, but are less interested in kidnapping her and are more concerned with trying to take down Kyo . Towards volume 10 the manga is more focused on Kyo and Misao, and it leans towards more action. As I said previously, the story gets better as it goes further along, and the questionable and uncomfortable scenes lessen considerably.
In volume 10, Kyo no longer comes across as a creep (as he's not just harassing Misao, thank God) and actually seems to care for Misao. He did seem rather cool, not cold, towards her in the first few volumes. But in volume 10 you can really see that he cares and loves her. We love character growth. Also, even though this happened a few volumes ago (but I can't remember which one it happens it now, oops), I really love I'm here for the action. I'm in love with the art style. It's sort of similar to Matsuri Hino who wrote and drew Vampire Knight, Vol. 1, my all-time favourite manga.
Volume 10 is perhaps one of the best volumes in this series. It feels like something legitimately serious is going on.
I'm glad I like this manga. I bought the first 9 volumes years ago but never bothered to read past volume 2 (teenage me disliked Kyo a lot, understandably). I've bought volumes 10 to 14 from a charity website, and have now ordered the last few from eBay. I hope the rest do not disappoint.

This story follows Misao, a high schooler who can see the magical creatures and spirits that are invisible to everyone else. This gift is merely an annoyance until her sixteenth birthday, when she gets attacked by a demon and discovers that she is the Senka Maiden, or bride of prophecy – a human whose blood gives unlimited power to the demon who claims her. Her childhood friend Kyo appears in time to save her, though it turns out he is a demon as well! Kyo is the leader of the Tengu (crow demon) clan, thus the name of the story. His intentions to protect her, however, seem to be pure – and Misao allows him to lick her wounds long enough to fall in love with him herself. Together they must face the challenges that come from courting the Senka Maiden, as well as the curse that befalls her once she bears the child of a demon.
This was a fantastic story! The characters were well done with bold personality traits: we can clearly see Kyo’s determination, his brother Soh’s treachery and underhandedness, the Daitengu’s loyalty, even Misao’s simultaneous naivety and bravery. And I absolutely loved the plot. Unlike Demon Spell (another manga featuring demons of Japanese culture), the story was very complete, with no detail left unexplained or unaccounted for.
*SPOILER ALERT* But my favorite part of all has to be the ending. Misao’s pregnancy is meant to lead to her death, but just when all seems to be lost, hope appears. Even if their ending isn’t perfect, it is happy, and you find yourself happy and grateful for the imperfection because it shows you how much worse things could have been.

The prodigal father returns.
With the sudden re-emergence of Kyo's father and attacks using human puppets still ongoing, chateau Tengu is one busy place. What clan is behind the attacks? What information does Kyo's father hold? Not only about the current situation, but about the mysterious circumstances surrounding his wife's death, and why he was blamed for it. And will an old enemy rear his head...
With the age gap of Kyo and Misao, along with Kyo's teasing meanness, I can understand how this might not be everyone's cup of tea. But I feel like everything is handled as delicately as possible and it's volumes like this that keep the urge to keep reading alive. There's twist and turns, and exciting antics on every page!
It was great getting to learn more about Kyo's family history, seeing Misao growth of emotional strength and maturity, and witnessing a softer side of Kyo, (which is flipping adorable!) While there was less action in this volume, the political element between clans and within the Tengu clan itself was interesting to say the least.
The art was also stunning! I can't wait to see where the story goes and watch the character's lives unfold. Only 8 more volumes to go.

Kyo’s father pays them a visit! He describes his predatory nature of wanting to marry a seven-year-old as she aged in front of him as he was older than her and dear lord. Anyway. At a young age everyone could see that Sho was definitely a serial killer. The wife of the father didn’t want either boy to have an upper hand and ruins the father’s plans of having Kyo become leader easily. The dad very nearly kills her in his anger and for revealing his plans to stop they’re clearly unhinged son. She kills her self instead out of shame. Sho is alive and uses the Nue clan to attack humans to instigate the Tengu clan to share Misao.

Toda la historia del padre me parece muy triste, todo lo que tuvo que sufrir para escoger a uno de sus hijos y las consecuencias que pasaron, vaya, solo espero que pueda conocer a sus nietos como dicen, me cayó muy bien, es realmente lo que podría ser el chico cuando sea más grande, aunque la verdad no lo veo con la barba, no se si le quedará.

I will tell you I wasn’t very sure of Kyo’s father. I didn’t truth him at first until I got the full story. Once I got the full story I could help but feel sad for Kyo and really sympathize for him.
I also understood why Sho was the way he was. Sho has no one. He was always left alone to fend for himself, and when his brother challenged him and won, he truly was alone.
Misao did the right thing by telling Kyo, but I wish Kyo’s father told Kyo himself because it would have brought them closer together I think.
I’m glad more characters are coming out, but I do miss some of the old ones. I hope Sakurakouji brings them back very soon.

By this point in the story I'm getting a little bored - We learn about the death of Kyo's mother and his broken relationship with his father . Oh and Sho makes a reappearance, but otherwise I found this one a little dull and overly drawn out. Misao is unbelievably passive in this one, Kyo's not at his best and there's not too much demon activity or cute relief with Taro and his brothers. Another solid instalment, but not my favourite.

I feel so bad for Kyo's mom... and in a similar vein, feel icked out about how the mangaka keeps mistaking grooming for romance.
Now that we're back in the Tengu village I'm starting to feel a sense of deja vu, like we've gone nowhere at all since the last time we were here x_x The story is starting to feel repetitive and slow and I'm losing patience a bit. I need something exciting to happen, and fast!

This volume... I'm not sure how I feel about it honestly. It just felt like it was lacking... I don't even know what.
Kyo is showing more of his demon side in this one, which is interesting...

Kyo's dad comes back into the picture and you learn a little more backstory. I liked that part. It's honestly why I rated this 3 stars.

Kyo doesn't want Misao to talk to his dad as it's still uncertain whether he killed his wife and Kyo's mother Lady Yuri. Yoh tells Misao the truth about how he lost his position for allowing Kyo to pursue the position of leader and how it lead Yuri to commit suicide. Sho is resurrected and the Nue clan is nearly destroyed.

While this wasn't as good as last volume, it was sstill pretty damn good. We got to find out about Kyou's parents and what happened the day his mother was found dead.
We also find out Shou (his brother) is still alive and that he had a change of heart (or did he?????).

First off, I am tired of how Misao is treated. It is so weird and sometimes mentally abusive. Secondly, I love angst but Misao is so infuriating with her flip floppy way of dealing with things. Lastly, Sho again...really? Ugh.

I was enjoying this volume up until Kyo pretty much forced himself onto Misao claiming that she’s his and that he can be kind or mean depending on how she makes him feel. Manipulation and a forceful sex scene makes me so uncomfortable…

November 2, 2022For a series it's not bad. I enjoyed most parts of the story, some things were just not needed. I love all the characters. The love story is crazy but it's a book so do not take it seriously! Also, not a book for young readers.

A lot was revealed in this. Everything that happened with Kyo and Sho's mother and father. The spy. The fact of what really happened with Sho. The clan thats attacking the humans. There is just a lot going on here. I love seeing Kyo and Misao grow together as a couple.
